Description

The present invention relates to tooling for sharpening the blades of sharp or sharp tools, and in particular the blades of knives.

Sharp cutting blades require regular maintenance to maintain cutting power.
This maintenance consists of regular grinding operations during which the cutting is reformed by means of a wheel or a suitable machine; between two sharpening operations, the wear of the cutting edge is delayed by sharpening operations by means of a tool called a "rifle", by means of a diabolo sharpener, or by means of a module of sharpening with crossed pins (fixed or articulated).

The type of sharpening rifle used is a function of the degree of wear of the blade. Often the operator uses a "rough" shotgun to rough out the work, before using a "smooth" finishing gun to burn the blade wire.
But the implementation of these sharpening rifles requires significant technical expertise and an experienced hand; as a result they can not be used effectively by anyone.

Diabolo-type and fixed-pin type edgers are relatively inefficient and do not provide an interesting sharpening quality.

The sharpening machines of the articulated cross-pin type are generally used to brown the tool blades and have the advantage of being able to be used satisfactorily even by people who do not have a great deal of experience or a high degree of technicality. in the field of sharpening.
An apparatus of this type, described in US-A-5 478 272, consists of a planar base in which is arranged a vertical slot for the passage of the blade to sharpen, and provided with two sharpening pins which intersect opposite the said slot. The two sharpening spindles, made of steel wire, have a generally curved shape and they are articulated at their upper end on the flat base, by means of rotary knobs associated with return springs. These pins form between them Vee sharpening which is mobile under the pressure of the blade of the tool that one wishes to sharpen; the corresponding Vee mobile ensures a regular or relatively regular treatment pressure on the tool blade.
Lower and upper stops limit the pivoting of said pins between a high position and a low position.

The structure of this type of device is however relatively complex, in particular because of the presence of the return springs integrated in the rotary knobs. In addition, these springs tire fairly quickly and it is necessary to replace them regularly, which is not always very easy to achieve, and resulting in significant costs of parts and labor.

The present invention provides a sharpening apparatus of the type just described, that is to say the articulated cross pin type, but simplified structure, so easier maintenance and cost less expensive.

Another object of the present invention is to improve the guidance of the tool blade to perfect the sharpening quality.

Encore un autre but de l'invention est de proposer, en complément des deux broches d'affilage articulées servant de brunissoir, un dispositif complémentaire apte à assurer des opérations plus poussées de redressage du fil de la lame d'outil (opérations plus poussées qui s'apparentent à celles remplies par les fusils « rugueux » classiques).Yet another object of the invention is to propose, in addition to the two articulated sharpening pins serving as a burnisher, a complementary device capable of providing more advanced straightening operations for the wire of the tool blade (more advanced operations which are similar to those filled by conventional "rough" rifles).

The apparatus according to the present invention, for sharpening the blades of cutting tools, is thus of the type comprising a plate provided with an opening allowing the passage of the tool blade, opposite which opening are arranged two structures of elongated pinning machine which intersect, which sharpening pins are articulated at one of their ends on said plate, each on one side of said opening, and comprise elastic return means, so as to to obtain a vee of mobile sharpening under the pressure of the blade to be sharpened.
According to the present invention, each sharpening spindle consists of a U-shaped rod comprising two parallel or substantially parallel arms. parallel connected at one of their ends and whose two free ends comprise returns to the square, forming hinge pins which are housed free of rotation in offset mounting holes, arranged on said plate or on a suitable support integral with said plate, so as to obtain an elastic return of said sharpening pins by a torsion effect.

Still according to the invention, the two sharpening pins have a generally curved shape constantly making an angle of about 40 ° between them.

Still according to the invention, the plate of the apparatus is provided with a vertical opening, the two sharpening pins being articulated in the upper part of the support plate, on axes perpendicular to the plane of the latter.

According to a preferred embodiment, the two sharpening spindles each comprise angled returns oriented in the opposite direction. At rest, these returns are advantageously off-axis.

The returns to the angle of the sharpening pins, which form the hinge pins, can be easily extracted from their receiving holes, so as to make said removable pins in particular to facilitate their replacement or cleaning.

According to another interesting feature, the two sharpening pins are nested one inside the other.

According to yet another particularity, the sharpening apparatus according to the present invention comprises a guide structure of the tool blade, in the form of two independent flat blades arranged vis-à-vis, fixed at their end. upper on the plate or on a support integral with said plate. These two blades are spaced from each other at the top and they come into contact with each other at their lower end to define a self-locking guide vee, arranged just behind the two sharpening pins .
These two guide blades are preferably dihedron to form a first flared Vee in the upper part of the opening of the plate, and a second Vé constricted in its lower part.

According to yet another characteristic, the guide blades are provided at the bottom with means for straightening the wire of the tool blades. These means are advantageously in the form of two monobloc tabs each taken from one of the guide blades and folded in opposite directions from one another to form a straightening Vee.

According to another feature, the plate of the sharpening apparatus comprises a monobloc tab for its removable embedding in a suitable support.

The support 3 is illustrated in isolation in FIGS. 6 to 8, and the support 4 in FIGS. 9 to 11; these supports 3 and 4 both have the same general structure, but the support 3 is slightly shorter, so as to allow the nesting of the two sharpening pins 10, 12, as will be seen later.
Each support 3, 4 is generally U-shaped comprising a base 14, a rear wing 16 and a front wing 18. They extend perpendicularly to the plane of the plate 1, projecting forwards, fixed by welding their rear wing 16 on said plate 1 along the edges of the opening 2.
In FIGS. 7 and 10, the presence of a notch 20 formed in the rear wing 16, which facilitates the correct positioning of the supports 3 and 4 on a complementary recess form cut in the plate 1, before the joining is noted. by welding.
The base 14 of the supports 3 and 4 comprises a threaded orifice 22 which allows the removable attachment of the flat blades 6 and 8 by means of a screw 24, 26 (Figure 4).

The two flat blades 6 and 8 are made for example of stainless steel chrome spring; they are arranged facing each other and extend perpendicularly to the plane of the plate 1. These blades 6, 8 each comprise an L-shaped end return 28 which allows their fixing to the supports 3 and 4 by means of the screw 24, 26; from this return to L 28, the two blades 6 and 8 each take the form of a dihedron to form together a first flared Vee 30 in the upper part of the opening 2, followed by a second constricted 32, in the lower part of said opening.
The lower edges 34 and 36 of the two blades 6 and 8 come into contact with each other to form a self-locking guide system.

Just above their bottom edge 34 and 36, the two blades 6 and 8 have offset internal cutouts 38 and 40 (Figure 2) which form monobloc tabs folded in opposite directions to each other to form a Vee 42 for straightening the wire of the tool blade, in a perfect alignment.
The angle that form between them the two tabs 38 and 40 is of the order of 40 °.
Each monobloc tongue 38, 40 is associated with a lateral opening for embedding the homologous tongue.

The two sharpening pins 10 and 12 are made of wire, for example chromed stainless steel spring wire. They consist of a U-shaped rod, comprising two parallel arms 48, 50 integral with one of their ends 52 and whose free ends comprise one-piece square returns 54, 56, shown in dashed lines on FIG. 5, which come to slip into appropriate orifices 58, 60 arranged in the front wing 18 of the supports 3 and 4.
This embedding of the returns 54 and 56 in the orifices 58 and 60 allows the articulation of the pins 10 and 12 on their respective support 3, 4, about axes perpendicular to the support plate 1.

Les orifices 58 et 60 s'étendent perpendiculairement au plan de la platine 1 et ils traversent de part en part l'aile avant 18 des supports 3 et 4.The orifices 58 and 60 extend perpendicular to the plane of the plate 1 and they pass right through the front wing 18 of the supports 3 and 4.

The two orifices 58 and 60 are offset to obtain an elastic return system of the pins 10 and 12 by a twisting effect of the two parallel arms 48 and 50. The positioning of the returns 54, 56, and that of the two orifices 58 , 60 is adapted to obtain the desired elastic return characteristics.
At rest, the two arms 48 and 50 of the pins 10 and 12 are parallel, and one of these arms has a slightly longer length than the other to offset the two returns 54 and 56 to allow their embedding in the orifices 58, 60.
These returns 54, 56 are oriented in the opposite direction to each other so that the two parallel arms 48, 50 of the pins 10, 12 are positioned on either side of the front wings 18 of the supports 3 and 4, which positioning being possible due to the elasticity of the end link 52 of said pins. The returns 54 and 56 are simply fitted into the orifices 58 and 60, free from rotation and removable.

Cette imbrication est ici réalisée grâce à une légère différence de longueur des supports 3 et 4.The two sharpening spindles 10 and 12 are mounted nested one inside the other as illustrated in Figures 1, 3 and 5 to optimize the sharpening operations, and also to limit the size of the device . This nesting is here achieved thanks to a slight difference in length of the supports 3 and 4.

In FIGS. 1, 3 and 5, the general curved shape of the two pins 10 and 12 is noted, which makes it possible to keep between them an angle of the order of 40 °, whatever the depth of penetration of the blade of tool.

At rest, the two sharpening pins 10 and 12 are in the up position, their end being blocked by abutment structures 62 arranged on the sides of the plate 1. These stops 62 can be made in one piece, by folding the lateral parts of platinum 1; they may also consist of independent elements, reported and fixed by any appropriate means.
At the ends of the stops 62, we note the presence of a small cutout 64 (Figures 1 and 4) structured to form a control gauge allowing the operator to check the wear of the tip of his knife.

At rest, it is noted that the two sharpening spindles 10 and 12 intersect just below the transition level between the flared V 30 and the constricted V 32 of the guide blades 6 and 8.

The support plate 1 has a generally triangular shape; it may include internal openings 66 on either side of the opening opening 2, which allow to lighten its weight.
In the lower part, the plate 1 is provided with a one-piece lug 68 which allows the removable embedding of the sharpening apparatus in a suitable support, fixed on the workstation. The apparatus can thus very easily be removed from its support, in particular for cleaning or disinfection.
An internal cutout 70 arranged in the one-piece lug 68 further reduces the weight of the apparatus.

As shown in FIG. 12, once the apparatus is positioned vertically on its support (not shown), the operator places the tool blade 72 it wants to sharpen between the two blades 6 and 8 which form a self-locking guide.
If he wishes to use the straightening vee 42 formed by the two one-piece tongues 38 and 40, he exerts a vertical pressure on the tool, sufficient for his blade to reach said vee 42 by removing the two pins 10, 12; the operator can then perform the back and forth movements adapted to "work" the wire of the tool blade, in a manner similar or related to conventional work by a "rough" shotgun.
The tool blade is then guided by the self-locking Vee 32 of the guide blades 6, 8 which ensures a perfect working angle.

The two sharpening spindles 10 and 12 are then used to finish the sharpening operation, that is, to "brown" or smooth the tool blade, as can be done in a fashionable manner. classic by means of a "smooth" shotgun.
The operator then moves back and forth from the tool blade on the two sharpening spindles 10, 12, exerting a pressure just sufficient not to reach the straightening vee 42.
The two sharpening spindles 10 and 12 are similar to mobile torsion bars in the form of arches and they make it possible to keep between them, and whatever the depth of penetration of the tool blade into the constricted V-32 , the right angle of attack to optimize the work on the wire of the blade.

The downward movement of the tool blade is limited by the presence of the straightening vee 42 and therefore it is not necessary to provide low abutment structures for the two sharpening pins 10 and 12. In any condition Because of this, the two pins 10 and 12, nested one inside the other, can not deviate from each other in the lower part.

The two sharpening pins 10 and 12 intrinsically have their own elastic return means, which simplifies the structure of the apparatus. In addition, these two pins can easily be dismantled and reassembled from their support, in particular for replacement operations following a deterioration, or simply for cleaning.

The apparatus according to the present invention has a relatively simple overall structure and is very complete since it proposes two associated assemblies that make it possible to work the wire of the tool blades differently.

The embodiment which has just been described is entirely made of metal. Of course some parts, and in particular the plate 1 and the reported support structures 3 and 4 could be obtained from molded plastic; in the latter case, the fixing of the support structures 3 and 4 on the plastic plate can be obtained by means of suitable screws.
