Abstract

191,266. Haywood, H. Dec. 17, 1921. V-slot sharpeners.-A sharpener for knives &c. comprises a pair of sharpening-bars 5, 6 pivoted at one end and crossed at the other end under the action of a spring 11 to form a sharpening-angle. When a knife is pressed into such angle, the bars open out and thus, moving along the knifeedge, sharpen it, the spring 11 returning the bars to normal position after each stroke. The mechanism is encased in a box 1 having a slot 2 with a metal shield 19 to engage with the shoulders of the knife 16. The bars 5, 6, which are curved, may be of hardened flat steel or other sharpening-material, or may be round, fluted, or knurled rods, and are pivotally positioned in the box at an angle preferably of 45‹. The outer ends of the, bars 5, 6 ride against a semi-circular track 9, the centre of the track being formed with a curved portion 10, against which the bars rest when closed. Straight bars may be used, and they may be mounted on separate pivots and have separate springs.
