Definitions
- the invention relates to an electroluminescent system with a substance that emits light when an electrical voltage is applied.
- Electroluminescent systems are known. Either inorganic or organic substances are used in these which can be excited by means of an electrical voltage for emitting light beams.
- single-crystalline III-V or II-IV semiconductors and powdered ZnS compounds which can be doped differently, are used as inorganic substances.
- high AC voltages must be available as the operating voltage.
- the existing battery charge can be converted accordingly as a DC voltage. This voltage conversion is, on the one hand, very complex and, in addition, requires additional electromagnetic compatibility protection for further electronic systems of the motor vehicle due to the operation with high alternating voltages.
- electroluminescent organic substances for example polymers, dyes, molecules doped with molecules and polymer blends.
- organic substances have inadequate long-term stability, in particular thermal and / or chemical stability. It is therefore not possible to use electroluminescent systems with organic substances in practical use, for example in the illumination of display instruments in motor vehicles.
- the electroluminescent system with the features mentioned in claim 1 offers the advantage that an electroluminescent system which can be produced inexpensively and is versatile can be achieved in a simple manner.
- the light-emitting substance is formed by inorganic particles which are connected to one another via organic spacers, it is advantageously possible to obtain a light-emitting substance in which the desired electrical, electronic, chemical and mechanical properties are selectively achievable.
- the inorganic particles connected to one another via the organic spacers create a binary system in which the inorganic particles take over the electron conductivity of the light-emitting substance, while the organic spacers take over the mechanical stabilization of the light-emitting substance and the generation of the light radiation .
- the probability may be influenced for a radiative recombination of electrons and holes, so that 'a high Licht ⁇ yield with the inventive light-emitting substance is achievable.
- the organic spacers are formed by an organic covering, preferably an organic ligand covering.
- the positioning of the inorganic particles within the light-emitting substance is determined by the organic ligand sheath, since the ligand shells are mutually another form a chemical compound which determines the mechanical stability of the substance and thus the position of the inorganic particles.
- the distances between the inorganic particles can be adjusted.
- a so-called tunneling of electrons through the ligand shell can be set by the choice of the distance between the inorganic particles.
- the thickness of the ligand shell is preferably chosen so that.
- the electron conduction is ensured by the light-emitting substance by means of the inorganic particles, the electrons tunneling through the ligand shell.
- the ligand shell made of organic substances has a high mobility for holes so that they can move within the ligand shell. This resulting tunnel conductivity ensures the current flow through the inorganic particles, although these are spaced apart from one another due to the organic coating surrounding them.
- the organic ligand shells around the inorganic particles are connected to one another by means of organic molecular chains. This results in crosslinking of the inorganic particles within the light-emitting substance, the distance between the inorganic particles being adjustable by a number of atoms of the respective molecule chains. This makes it very advantageous owing to the number of atoms within the molecular chains, that is to say whether the distance between two adjacent inorganic particles is larger or smaller, the tunnel conductivity between the inorganic particles can be adjusted.
- Figure 1 is a schematic sectional view through an electroluminescent system in a first embodiment
- Figure 2 is a schematic sectional view through an electroluminescent system in a second embodiment
- FIG. 10 An electroluminescent system, generally designated 10, is shown in FIG.
- the illustration schematically shows a section of a section through a system 10.
- the system 10 has a light-emitting substance 12 which between a first electrode 14 and a second electrode 16 is arranged.
- the electrodes 14 and 16 are flat, so that the light-emitting substances 12 located between the electrodes 14 and 16 are also flat between the electrodes 14 and 16.
- the electrodes 14 and 16 are connected to a voltage source 18, which can be the battery of a motor vehicle, for example.
- a first electrode 14 is connected to ground and a second electrode 16 to the positive pole.
- the layer structure consisting of the electrodes 14 and 16 and the substance 12 is arranged on a carrier 20.
- the light-emitting substance 12 consists of inorganic particles 22, each of which is surrounded by an organic ligand shell 24. It can be seen from the greatly simplified illustration that each of the inorganic particles has the ligand shell 24. This ensures that the inorganic particles 22 cannot touch one another directly.
- the ligand shells 24 thus form a spacer 26 between the inorganic particles 22. Depending on the thickness of the ligand shell 24, the distance between two adjacent inorganic particles 22 is more or less large.
- the ligand shells 24 are generally a few atomic layers of strong organic compounds.
- the inorganic particles 22 can be formed, for example, by electrically conductive clusters.
- the clusters can both semiconductor clusters (for example such as CdTe, CdSe, ...) or metal clusters (for example gold, palladium, platinum, nickel, ... ⁇ .
- the clusters or the inorganic particles have a grain size in the nano range.
- the organic ligand shell 24 can, for example The individual ligand shells 24 around the individual inorganic particles 22 form a chemical bond with one another, for example through polymerization, due to the small grain size of the inorganic particles in the nano range, the light-emitting substance 12 a high degree of filling (packing density), so that there is a large number of chemical compounds within the substances 12 between the individual ligand shells 24. This results in great mechanical stability of the light-emitting substances 12.
- the inorganic particles 22 are thus inside the ligand shells 24 the substance 12 stabilizes t.
- the first electrode 14 is made of a material with a low electron work function.
- the electrode 14 can consist of a metal, for example aluminum, or a metal alloy whose electron work function is less than 4.5 eV.
- the second electrode 16 consists of a material with a high electron work function.
- the electrode 16 can consist of an optically transparent material with good electrical conductivity, for example indium tin oxide ITO, which has an electron work function of greater than 4.5 eV.
- the carrier 20 consists of an optically transparent substrate. The carrier 20, like the electrodes 14 and 16 and the substrate 12, is also flat and flexible.
- the system 10 shown in FIG. 1 performs the following function:
- the electrical conductivity of the light-emitting substance 12 results from the high electron conductivity of the inorganic particles 22.
- the ligand shells 24 around the individual inorganic particles 22 form a potential barrier which has a so-called tunnel conductivity.
- the tunnel conductivity is the conductivity of electrons or holes between the adjacent inorganic particles 22.
- the tunnel conductivity is essentially determined by the spacing of the inorganic particles 22 that is predetermined by the thickness of the ligand shell 24.
- the second electrode 16 acts as a hole-injecting electrode for the light-emitting substance 12, while the electrode 14 connected to ground is connected as an electron-injecting electrode. Since the organic ligand shell 24 has a high mobility for holes, the tunneling of the electrodes through the ligand shells 24 enables so that overall an electron conductivity of the light-emitting substance 12 is given.
- the organic ligand shells 24 have functional groups that are not to be considered in more detail here, which on the one hand form adhesion sites for the polymerization of the individual ligand shells 24 with one another and on the other hand form recombination centers for so-called exitions. This causes it to pass through the . light-emitting substance 12 for a radiating recombination within the recombination centers, so that the light-emitting substance 12 can emit light. This radiant recombination within the light-emitting substance 12 can be emitted to the outside through the optically transparent electrode 16 and the optically transparent carrier 20, so that the electroluminescent system 10 shown in FIG. 1 can serve as a light source.
- the composition of the light-emitting substance 12 mentioned in the exemplary embodiment is merely exemplary.
- the choice of material for the inorganic particles 12 and the organic ligand shell 24 must be coordinated with the fact that there is a high electron conductivity in the inorganic particles 22 and a high hole conductivity in the ligand shell 24.
- the organic Ligand shell 24 has a high probability of a radiative recombination of electrons and holes, so that there is a high quantum yield in the electroluminescence of the entire system 10.
- the system 10 shown in FIG. 1 is therefore extremely suitable as a light source. Due to the areal production of the system 10, in principle any light source can be formed from the system 10 by means of mechanical working methods, for example punching, cutting etc.
- the color spectrum of the light-emitting substance 12 can be adjusted by selecting the organic compounds in the ligand shells.
- FIG. 10 A further embodiment variant of an electroluminescent system 10 is shown in FIG.
- the same parts as in Figure 1 are provided with the same reference numerals and not explained again.
- molecular chains 28 are arranged here between the ligand shells 24.
- the molecular chains 28 between the individual ligand shells 24 thus form a crosslink for the inorganic particles 22 within the light-emitting substance 12.
- the molecular chains 28 can, for example, as shown in more detail in FIG. 3, aromatic diamines (top illustration) or triphenylamine di ( lower illustration).
- the molecular chains 28 can have independent functional substituents.
- a length of the molecular chains 28 can be adjusted by a number of the atoms which each of the molecular chains 28 has.
- the distance between the inorganic particles 22 from one another can thus be set via the number of atoms within the molecular chains 28.
- the tunnel conductivity between the inorganic particles 22 can be influenced by the variability of the distance between the inorganic particles 22, since the tunneling probability of the electrons can be influenced by the ligand shell 24. Overall, the light-emitting substance 12 can thus be optimized for the highest possible light yield.
