Abstract

In order to improve handling of printing ink in printers, the ink is supplied to the duct roller (1) of the inking system through a space (10) limited on all sides that acts as an ink reservoir. Known ink dosing elements, for example ink measurement devices (4), are arranged at the outlet of said space (10). The limiting element (5) that determines the size of the space (10) forms with its front edge an adjustable gap (8) with the surface of the duct roller and ink is supplied under pressure to the space (10). Ink supply to the duct roller (1) is thus not only left to the ink own dynamic behaviour and hydrostatic pressure, as well as to the position of the ink measurement devices (4), but may also be influenced by a controllable print feeding pressure. The ink is directly pressed into the space (10), upstream of the ink measurement devices (4), by an appropriate pumping or dispensing system and under the most favourable pressure according to the operation conditions.

Description

The present invention relates to the feeding of the printing ink into the inking unit of a printing press, in particular to the application of the ink layer to the duct roller at the beginning of the inking unit.

Conventionally, an ink fountain is provided for this purpose, which is filled with a supply quantity of printing ink when preparing the machine for printing. Since the exact amount consumed is not known, a larger amount of paint is usually filled in than required.

During printing, the level of the printing ink and thus the static pressure on the front edge of the ink fountain base decreases, where a plurality of ink metering elements, for example sliding sliders or adjustable ink knives, are provided, which determine the ink feed gap and thus the layer thickness of the ink taken from the ductor surface to the squeegee roller . In order to introduce the ink quantity required at the respective position into the inking unit, in addition to the ink metering elements, the ductor speed and the use of the siphon roller that removes the ink from the ductor are also controlled accordingly. However, it is not taken into account that the static printing of the ink at the location of the ink metering elements also has an influence on the ink transfer, so that only a medium fill level of the ink can be optimal and the printing result in the case of overfilling or underfilling is always of lower quality. In view of the ever faster printing machines and thus the faster ink consumption, this fact has a negative impact on the Print quality and the ease of use of the press.

A further disadvantage is the fact that after the completion of a print job, usually larger amounts of ink remain in the usual ink fountains, the further storage or disposal of which is difficult.

A certain improvement arises with a technique of ink application known from DE-GM 1 944 832 to the inking roller of an inking unit, in which above the usual ink fountain with ink meter acting as a metering element, a transversely movable ink pump is provided, which transfers the ink through a nozzle gives down to the Duktor. With this design, the ink supply can be kept low and the ink delivery along the ductor can be controlled according to the desired distribution. However, difficulties can arise here in that the tough printing ink does not flow as desired. A disruptive skin can also form on the open surface of the ink supply.

A limiting element for the ink supply is known from US Pat. No. 3,457,858, where a wedge-shaped body is pushed from behind onto the inclined floor of the ink fountain and encloses the ink supply between itself and the ductor under the effect of the weight. However, this delimitation body can only be moved manually and can be pushed away by a pressure building up in the ink supply, so that here too no defined application of paint and complete consumption of the ink supply is ensured.

In a device known from DE-OS 28 16 881, paint is applied to a rotating roller by means of a metering bar, with a distribution in the longitudinal direction the roller takes place in that the ink is conveyed by a plurality of longitudinally successive and individually controllable pumps into a nip space which is formed by an ink rail bent according to the radius of the roller between the roller and the roller surface. This training is quite complicated, difficult to clean and yet does not ensure a reliably even color distribution.

The object of the present invention is to provide a device for supplying printing ink into the inking unit of a printing press, which allows uniformly optimal conditions for the ink delivery to the ductor surface to be achieved in front of the ink metering elements, with a minimal amount of remaining ink supply at the end of a print job .

The problem is solved by the features specified in the claims. The design according to the invention makes it possible to create a small, yet uniformly filled and pressurized ink supply space, so that the most favorable conditions for ink transfer to the duct surface in front of the ink metering elements can be set. As a result, these also meet constant operating conditions and the desired color distribution along the duct can be achieved more reliably. The controllability of the print in the ink supply opens up another possibility for the optimal design of the color transfer.

Due to the design according to the invention and the possibility of pressure control of the ink delivery created with it, this can also be set much higher than would be achievable with conventional ink fountains. This opens up the possibility of using shorter inking units that manage with fewer distribution and intermediate rollers. The ability to do all of this with minimal The effect of ink storage space leads to small amounts of ink residue after a print job has been completed and opens up the possibility of also washing the elements forming the ink storage space when washing the inking unit.

Because of the small and spatially closed color storage area, skin formation on free color surfaces cannot occur. The pressure in the ink supply and the forced conveyance caused thereby counteracts the risk of dirt accumulating which could interfere with the ink dosage. The emulsified paint returned from the surface of the duct to the paint supply, the consistency and properties of which are changed by the water absorption, also has a less disruptive effect. The risk of "stopping" of color has also been eliminated, as can occur in conventional ink fountains, in particular when the ink consumption is low, in that swirling movements occur in the ink supply and hinder or completely prevent its transfer.

The invention is further explained below by the description of exemplary embodiments. It shows

In the first embodiment according to FIG. 1, a conventional ink fountain 2 is assigned to a duct roller 1, the inclined bottom 3 of which has slides 4 on the front edge as ink metering elements. These are in a known manner, as indicated by the double-headed arrow, controllable and are used for zone-by-zone adjustment of the layer thickness of the paint applied to the ductor surface.

A limiting element 5 is clamped on the ink fountain base 3 by means of a clamping device 6. It extends in the transverse direction over the entire dimension of the ink fountain and its front edge has a section 7 which runs approximately tangentially to the duct surface and which maintains a certain gap distance 8 from the duct surface. The gap distance 8 is determined, for example, with sensors before the limiting element 5 is tightened.

The front end face 9 of the delimiting element 5 is designed such that it forms a bounded and practically closed ink supply space 10 together with the front edge of the ink fountain base 3 and the ink metering slides 4 and the adjacent surface of the duct 1. A paint supply channel 11 opens into this, which is implemented in the limiting element 5 in the middle of its extension and to which a hose 14 for supplying paint under metered pressure is connected. The ink supply channel 11 is formed from a section 12 extending at right angles to the surface of the delimiting element 5 in the form of a bore and a recess 13 in the lower surface of the delimiting element 5, which widens towards the front and forms a widening gap nozzle together with the ink box base 3. It is understood that several such ink supply points can be provided distributed in the transverse direction if necessary.

The hose 6 is connected to a suitable ink conveying device, which allows the ink in the ink reservoir 10 to be kept at a desired optimal value, which in turn depends on a number of parameters, in particular the viscosity of the Color, the speed of the ductor, the total size of the exit gap released by the slides 4. The supply pressure of the paint through the channel 11 will be in equilibrium with the pressure building up in the gap distance 8, in which the returned emulsified paint is subject to a shear flow and takes on a value which is dependent on a large number of factors, in particular one which is dependent on the color toughness Component and a dynamic dynamic pressure component exists.

A suitable ejection device for the ink can be a push-out device for tubular containers or a plunger delivery device that can be attached to disposable cartridges or return cartridges. The packaging of the paint itself is included in the conveyor and the containers can be almost completely emptied and then disposed of without any problems. Likewise, a special pumping device of a tank or barrel conveyor system can be used to supply the ink with pressure.

The operation of the device described proceeds in such a way that the ink supply space 10 is filled while the ductor 1 is rotating, and in the ongoing printing operation the pressure in the ink supply space is then kept at the optimum value, namely in the equilibrium described above, by supplying color.

By controlling the printing of the color in the ink supply space 10, uniformly high print quality can be achieved over the entire print run from the first to the last sheet. Monitoring and manual refilling of ink fountains is no longer necessary. Cleaning the machine is much easier. For example, in the first embodiment considered according to FIG. 1, the end face 9 and possibly narrow adjacent strips of the tangential section 7 and the lower surface of the delimiting element 5 can be taped off with an adhesive strip, which can be removed after the print job has ended, so that the limiting element itself no longer requires cleaning.

While the first embodiment of the device considered above is suitable for simple retrofitting of existing inking units of printing presses, FIG. 2 shows a second embodiment which requires certain design changes.

In this embodiment too, there is an ink fountain base 3 with ink metering slides 4 on the front edge. The delimiting element 5 is here in the form of a wall and is pivotably articulated on the ink fountain base 3 by means of a joint 16 and acted upon by an adjusting device 17, which allows the gap distance 8 between the delimiting element 5 and the surface of the duct 1 to be set. The paint is supplied through the hose 14 and a paint supply opening 19 in the limiting element 5.

With this configuration, if necessary, apart from the known parameters and the pressure in the ink supply space 10, the gap distance 8 can also be regulated during the printing operation.

In the third embodiment variant according to FIG. 3, the ink supply space 10 is formed essentially in the front edge of the delimiting element 5 by a recess which runs over the entire transverse extent and is closed at the ends by side walls in which ink supply openings 19 are provided, on which tubes 14 are connected. In this way, the ink is supplied from both sides.

The fourth embodiment according to FIG. 4 basically corresponds to the first embodiment insofar as here also on an ink fountain base 3 arranged on its front edge Color metering slides 4 a limiting element 5 can be fixed by means of a clamping device 6. The element 5 delimiting the ink supply space 10 here consists of two parts, namely a lower sliding plate 21 which is seated directly on the ink fountain base 3 and an upper plate 22 seated thereon, on which the clamping device 6 engages and the front edge of which is set to the gap distance 8. The sliding plate 21 is connected to a sliding drive 24. Its front edge is designed in accordance with the direction and curvature of the duct surface.

In the retracted position of the sliding plate 21, the ink supply space 10 is formed between the front edge, the released lower surface of the top plate 22, the duct surface and the front edge of the ink fountain base 3 with the ink metering slides 4. The ink supply channel 11, which runs through the top plate 22, opens into this space. Normal printing takes place in this configuration.

At the end of the printing operation, the ink supply through the feed channel 11 is stopped and the remaining quantity still present in the ink supply space 10 is displaced by advancing the sliding plate 21. As a result, this residual amount is also consumed and at the same time the feed channel 11 is closed by the surface of the sliding plate 21.
