    Claims (25)

    1. A differential tripping device of the kind comprising. under a cover (20) by means of which it is disposed beside the casing (12) of a main tripping device (11), a fault detector (21) for supplying a differential current in response to a fault, a responsive relay (22) operated by the fault detector (21) and a tripping mechanism (24) which, under the control of the responsive relay (22), is capable of acting on the main tripping device (11), characterised in that the responsive relay (22) and the tripping mechanism (24) are carried by the cover (20) while the fault detector (21) is carried by the casing (12) of the main tripping device (11).
    2. A differential tripping device according to claim 1 characterised in that, a test circuit (40) using a resistor (41) being provided, the resistor (41) is carried by the casing (12) of the main tripping device (11).
    3. A differential tripping device according to claim 2 characterised in that, excluding the fault detector (21) and the resistor (41), all the components are carried by the cover (20).
    4. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 1 to 3 characterised in that, the tripping mechanism (24) comprising in the form of separate parts a plurality of springs (54, 60, 75), each of said springs (54, 60, 75) belongs to a sub-assembly (68, 85), by means of which it is fitted to the cover (20).
    5. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 1 to 4 characterised in that the tripping mechanism (24) comprises a tripping lever (51) which, mounted rotatably on a spindle (52) fixed with respect to the cover (20), comprises an arm (53) on which the responsive relay (22) can act, a return spring (54) which continuously urges the tripping lever (51) in the direction of the responsive relay (22), an actuating lever (55) which, mounted rotatably on a spindle (56) fixed with respect to the cover (20) and separate from the preceding spindle. comprises an arm (58) by means of which it can act on the main tripping device (11), disengageable latching means (59) by which the tripping lever (51) is capable of retaining the actuating lever (55) in an engaged position, and an opening spring (60) which continuously urges the actuating lever (55) in the direction of a tripping position which is angularly displaced from its engaged position.

A differential tripping device according to claim 5 characterised in that the return spring (54) of the tripping lever (51) is a torsion spring which, by means of its central torsion portion (65), is engaged on a hub (66) of the tripping lever (51) having in projecting relationship a lug (67) for retaining same such that upon assembly it belongs with said tripping lever (51) to the same sub-assembly (68).
    7. A differential tripping device according to claim 5 characterised in that the opening spring (60) is a torsion spring which, by means of its central torsion portion (82), is engaged on a hub (83) of the actuating lever (55) having in projecting relationship a lug (84) for retaining same such that upon assembly it belongs with said actuating lever (55) to the same sub-assembly (85).
    8. A differential tripping device according to claim 7 characterised in that one of the limbs (86) of the opening spring (60) bearing against a projection (87) which is fixed with respect to the cover (20). said projection (87) has a chamfer (88) at its free end for automatically stressing said opening spring (60) upon assembly.
    9. A differential tripping device according to claim 8 characterised in that the other of the limbs (89) of the opening spring (60) bears against an axial shoulder (90) of the actuating lever (55) and on the side opposite thereto it at least locally extends along another axial shoulder (91) of said actuating lever (55).
    10. A differential tripping device according to claim 9 characterised in that, a test circuit (40) being provided, said other limb (89) of the opening spring (60) comprises a prolongation portion (94), in the path of movement of which is interposed an auto-interrupt tongue portion (108) belonging to said test circuit (40).
    11. A differential tripping device according to claim 5 characterised in that, on its face opposite to the responsive relay (22). the arm (53) of the tripping lever (51) on which said responsive relay (22) can act is subjected to the force of a damping spring (75) which is itself subjected to the action of the actuating lever (55).
    12. A differential tripping device according to claim 11 characterised in that the damping spring (75) is a torsion spring which, by means of its central torsion portion (76) is engaged on a hub (77) of the tripping lever (51) having in projecting relationship a lug (81) for retaining same in such a way that upon assembly said damping spring (75) with the tripping lever (51) belongs to the same sub-assembly (68) and besides the arm (53) on which the responsive relay (22) can act and against which bears one of the limbs (78) of the damping spring (75) the tripping lever (51) comprises another arm (79) which supports the other limb (80) of the damping spring (75).
    13. A differential tripping device according to claim 5 characterised in that mounted rotatably on the actuating lever (5) is a re-arming lever (100) which under the force of resilient biasing means (105, 105') is capable of bearing by means of a projection (103) against a fixed track (104), at least for the tripping configuration, and which by means of a nose (101) is then interposed in the path of movement of a lug (15) fixed with respect to the operating lever (14) of the main tripping device (11).
    14. A differential tripping device according to claim 13 characterised in that the resilient biasing means (105) of the re-arming lever (100) bear against the actuating lever (55).
    15. A differential tripping device according to claim 13 characterised in that the resilient biasing means (105') of the re-arming lever (100) extend between two fixed abutments (125, 126).
    16. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 13 to 15 characterised in that the resilient biasing means (105, 105') of the re-arming lever (100) are in one piece with same.
    17. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 13 to 16 characterised in that. the tripping mechanism (24) extending between the cover (20) and a plate (48) which is fixed with respect thereto, the fixed track (104) is formed by the edge of said plate (48).
    18. A differential tripping device according to claim 5 characterised in that the actuating lever (55) carries a blade (97) which in the tripping position is in vertical alignment with a window (98) in the cover (20).
    19. A differential tripping device according to claim 18 characterised in that in one piece with the blade (97) that is carries, the actuating lever (55) is of coloured synthetic material.
    20. A differential tripping device according to claim 5 characterised in that the actuating lever (55) carries at the end of an arm (58) a finger (95) which for its action on the main tripping device (11) is engaged in the casing (12) thereof by way of an opening (19) provided for that purpose in the casing (12).
    21. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 1 to 20 characterised in that, a test circuit (40) being provided, said test circuit (40) comprises a connecting tongue portion (109) which, being fixed with respect to the cover (20), bears freely on a connecting terminal (110) which is fixed with respect to the casing (12) of the main tripping device (11).
    22. A differential tripping device according to claims 10 and 21 in combination characterised in that the connecting tongue portion (109) and the auto-interrupt tongue portion (108) both belong to a metal plate portion (111) which is fitted to the cover (20).
    23. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 1 to 22 characterised in that engagement means (35) are at least locally operatively disposed between the cover (20) and the casing (12) of the main tripping device (11) for pre-assembly of the arrangement.
    24. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 1 to 23 characterised in that the cover (20) at least locally forms a hood (27) by means of which it covers the corresponding portion of the edge of the casing (12) of the main tripping device (11).
    25. A differential tripping device according to any one of claims 1 to 24 characterised in that on one side at least the cover (20) has an opening (29) level with the connecting terminals (13P, 13N) of the main tripping device (11).
