Abstract

The sheath includes a stop or catch (7), which can be moved into one of two positions as required by the action of a control mechanism. In the first position the catch cooperates with a portion of the knife body to lock it in position within the sheath and prevent its withdrawal, and in the second position it releases the knife body for movement. The sheath may include a removable cassette (25) including sharpening components which engage the knife blade (6). The cassette may also include the stop catch and its release mechanism. The rear edge of the knife blade includes a small relief or projecting portion (8) which is engaged by a tongue portion (15) at the end of the stop catch.

Description

The present invention relates to a sharpening sheath adapted to receive a sharpening or storing knife.

It also relates to the combination of a sharpening sheath and a knife intended to be sharpened or stored in this sheath.

There are known devices for sharpening and storing kitchen knives. These devices can consist of an elongated rigid sheath having an opening in which the knife can be engaged.

Sharpening means are arranged inside the sheath behind the opening so that the knife undergoes a sharpening operation each time it is inserted into or removed from the sheath. These means are for example carried by a removable cassette which can be engaged on one end of the sheath in order to constitute the opening of the latter. The cassette can be changed when the sharpening means are worn out.

The sheath is also used to store the knife outside of periods of use. This protects the knife and in particular the edge of its blade from external shocks. Accidents are also avoided by isolating the knife from people working nearby. French patent FR-2 576 537 describes a device of this type.

Néanmoins, les dispositifs actuels ne permettent généralement pas d'éviter à coup sûr la sortie accidentelle du couteau remisé par exemple au cours du déplacement du fourreau ou d'un choc contre celui-ci.However, current devices do not generally prevent the accidental exit of the stored knife for example during the movement of the sheath or an impact against it.

In addition, some sharpening systems include parts held against the blade by elastic return means such as springs, for optimum sharpening of the blade. In this case, a imperfect positioning of the knife in the sheath or a slight deformation of the parts due to their wear and tear can sometimes lead to inadvertent ejection of the knife over a more or less long stroke and cause accidents.

Finally, most of the existing devices do not offer sufficient security with regard to young children who can without much difficulty remove the knife from the sheath.

This is why the present invention aims to overcome these drawbacks by proposing a sheath having improved handling safety and preventing the involuntary exit of the stored knife.

The present invention therefore provides a sharpening sheath adapted to receive a sharpening or storing knife, this sheath being characterized in that it comprises stop means and control means acting on the stop means and adapted to be actuated for place the means forming a stopper at will in two configurations, a first configuration where these means cooperate with complementary means carried by the knife to form a stopper in the exit path of the knife stored in the sheath so as to prevent the exit of the knife, and a second configuration where these means leave said trajectory free.

Thus, when the control means are not actuated to allow the knife to exit, the stop means constitute an obstacle in the knife exit path. It cannot therefore accidentally come out of the sleeve due to an impact or a positioning defect. Knife isolation is also guaranteed when young children handle the scabbard or approach the scabbard.

According to an advantageous version of the invention in which the complementary means of the knife include a relief, the stop comprises a tongue substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the sheath, the tongue being movable so that in the first configuration an element of the tongue is located in the exit path of said relief and in the second configuration the element is moved away from this trajectory.

According to a preferred version, the sheath comprises elastic return means of the tongue in said first configuration.

Consequently, in the absence of a contrary order from the user, the abutment means are automatically placed in the first configuration preventing the knife from coming out. Thus to store the knife, the user engages the knife in the sheath. Once the knife is fully inserted, the tongue is returned to the first configuration and the knife cannot be removed without acting on the control means.

According to another preferred version, the tongue is articulated in rotation on the sheath by an edge of the tongue situated towards the outside of the sheath along an axis orthogonal to the blade of the stored knife, the sheath comprising means for immobilizing the tongue in the second configuration.

When the tongue is inside the sheath and is substantially parallel to the upper wall of the sheath, the means for immobilizing the tongue can comprise a part that can move between a first position where this part is interposed between the wall of the sheath and the surface of the tongue and a second position where this part is released from the tongue, this part being maneuverable from outside the sheath.

The present invention also provides a combination of a sharpening sheath and a knife. intended to be sharpened or stored in this sheath, characterized in that the sheath conforms to the invention set out above and in that the knife has means complementary to the means forming a stop for the sheath.

  • la figure 1 est une vue en perspective d'un fourreau selon un premier mode de réalisation de l'invention;

The present invention relates to a sharpening sheath adapted to receive a knife to sharpen and store.

Un premier mode de réalisation du fourreau selon l'invention est représenté sur la figure 1.A first embodiment of the sheath according to the invention is shown in FIG. 1.

The sheath 1 has an elongated shape tapering from a wide end 2a which has the access opening 3 for the knife to a narrow end 2b opposite the end 2a.

La figure 2 présente un couteau de cuisine 5 destiné à être aiguisé et remisé dans le fourreau 1 en engageant la lame 6 du couteau dans l'ouverture 3.FIG. 2 shows a kitchen knife 5 intended to be sharpened and stored in the sheath 1 by engaging the blade 6 of the knife in the opening 3.

The general constitution of the sheath 1 and its use are of a conventional type and are detailed for example in FR-2,576,537.

According to the invention, the sleeve 1 comprises stop means and control means acting on the stop means and adapted to be actuated to place the stop means at will in two configurations, a first configuration where these means cooperate with complementary means carried by the knife 5 to form a stop in the exit path of the knife 5 stored in the sheath 1 so as to prohibit the exit of the knife, and a second configuration where these means leave said path free.

In FIGS. 1, 3 and 4, the means forming an abutment comprise a tongue 7 arranged outside the sheath 1 near the access opening 3.

The tongue 7 is substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the sheath 1. In Figures 1, 3 and 4, the tongue 7 has a flattened shape in a plane orthogonal to the vertical median plane III-III of the sheath.

This shoulder 8 is located on the part of the blade 6 which is adjacent to the handle 9, on the edge of the blade directed towards the sole 4 of the sheath, that is to say here the edge carrying the cutting edge 10.

The tongue 7 is movable so that in a first configuration 11 an element of the tongue 7 is located in the exit trajectory of the relief, here from the shoulder 8, and in a second configuration 12 the element is moved away from this trajectory . The first 11 and second 12 configurations are respectively represented in FIGS. 3 and 4.

For this, the tongue 7 is articulated in rotation on the sleeve 1 by an edge 13 of the tongue located towards the outside of the sleeve. The edge 13 is connected to the axis of rotation by means of the lateral extensions 36a and 36b. The axis of rotation 14 is substantially orthogonal to the plane of the blade 6 of the knife stored in the sheath which is parallel to the plane of the sheet in FIGS. 3 and 4.

In the present embodiment, said element of the tongue is constituted by the end 15 of the tongue 7 opposite the edge 13. Depending on the configuration of the tongue 7, the end 15 may or may not be in the path of the shoulder 8 when the knife comes out.

In the present embodiment, the control means comprise an actuating member acting on the tongue 7 and extending substantially above the upper face 16 of the sleeve 1, this member being arranged to control the passage of the tongue 7 in the second configuration 12.

This member here comprises a bracket 17 in the form of an inverted U extending along the side walls 18a and 18b of the sheath and rigidly connected to the tongue 7, the opening between the branches 19a and 19b of the U serving for the introduction of the knife 5. The stirrup 17 is here formed in one piece with the tongue 7 as shown in FIG. 1.

The sheath comprises means for immobilizing the tongue 7 in the first configuration 11.

In the present embodiment, these means comprise elastic return means of the tongue 7 in the first configuration 11. These means can comprise a spring 20 connected on the one hand to the tongue 7 and on the other hand to the sheath 1. This spring 20 is here conventionally constituted by a folded metal blade.

The part of the tongue 7 close to the knife when the latter is inserted or extracted from the sheath, here the end 15, has on its face directed towards the knife a not shown notch placed in the extension of the edge of the blade of the knife during of the passage of it. This notch of small dimensions and oriented parallel to the blade of the knife is very narrow. Its angle profile is sharper than that of the cutting edge of the blade so that when the blade passes the sides of the blade are in contact with the edges of the notch without the edge of the cutting edge rubbing against the tongue and wears out prematurely.

In the present embodiment, this cassette 25 includes the stop means and the control means. Thus, the tongue 7 which also carries the stirrup 17 is limited in rotation about its axis 14 by its edge 13 which is supported on the cassette 25.

The tongue 7 and the bracket 17 can in particular be made of plastic. The spring 20 can be made of metal.

In the second embodiment shown in Figure 5, the sleeve 1 is very close to that of the previous mode and the identical elements have the same references.

Les moyens de rappel élastiques comprennent une extrémité 26 de la languette 27 rigidement fixée au fourreau 1, c'est-à-dire ici à la cassette 25, par l'intermédiaire des prolongements latéraux 36a et 36b.The tongue 27, shown in Figure 5 in the first configuration 11, is here made of an elastic material, for example a suitable elastic plastic. The elastic return means comprise one end 26 of the tongue 27 rigidly fixed to the sheath 1, that is to say here to the cassette 25, by means of the lateral extensions 36a and 36b.

Of course, the end 26 of the tongue will have a reduced thickness to have sufficient elasticity allowing the bending of the tongue 27 while the end 15 will have a greater thickness in order to have the rigidity necessary to constitute a stop against the shoulder 8.

The tongue 27 has a protrusion 39 extending laterally in the extension of the end 15, that is to say on the side of the face 18a of the sheath. This protuberance visible in dotted lines in FIG. 5 is therefore not in the path of the blade.

The use of this embodiment is analogous to that of the first mode except that the user does not press on the stirrup but directly on the protuberance 39 when he wants to allow the knife to exit the sheath. However, a stirrup such as the stirrup 17 can also be arranged to control the tongue 27.

The combination according to the invention comprises a sharpening sheath according to the invention and a knife intended to be sharpened or stored in this knife and having means complementary to the means forming a stop for the sheath. The scabbard and the knife are for example formed according to one of the two embodiments which have just been exposed.

As shown by these two embodiments, the user must perform a precise voluntary maneuver to extract the knife from the sheath. In the first and second modes, the knife is automatically blocked after its introduction into the sheath and it suffices to press a member of the sheath to release the knife.

The invention makes it possible to improve the safety relating to the sheaths for a knife by preventing the involuntary exit of the knife for any reason whatsoever.

Bien entendu, on pourra apporter à l'invention de nombreuses modifications et améliorations sans sortir du cadre de celle-ci.Of course, we can bring to the invention many modifications and improvements without departing from the framework thereof.

It is possible in particular to apply the invention to a sheath adapted to receive several knives, the sheath being able to comprise stop-forming means and control means for each knife.
