Definitions
- HCM HCM
- the inner rotor body (Fig.4 Part 1.1), which also serves as the drive axis, is based on two roller or slide bearings that are located in the housing.
- the outer rotor is fixed in its axis of rotation by a plain bearing (Fig.4 part 8) or several wheels fixed in the housing, or by roller bearings.
- a plain bearing (Fig.4 part 8) or several wheels fixed in the housing, or by roller bearings.
- the working chamber moves from position 1 (Fig. 1) to position 2.
- the volume of the chamber increases and allows the fluid to enter the chamber through the control disc on the side.
- a work is done by the pressure of the fluid.
- the machine works as a motor. If the fluid is sucked in, we have a pump. In positions 4 and 5 the chamber reaches the largest volume. In this area, no fluid flows through the control disc into the machine. The fluid is brought into the other half of the machine with decreasing chamber volume, where it then flows back into the motor or pump circuit.
- CARICMOTOR also C-MOTOR
- the outer and inner rotors move synchronously, e.g. clockwise.
- the working chamber moves from position 1 (Fig. 1) to position 2.
- the air in the chamber is compressed and positions 2 and 3 reduce the chamber volume.
- the compression increases until the highest compression is reached in position 4.
- positions 1, 2 or 3 smaller amounts of fuel can be injected according to the principle of the so-called lean-burn engine.
- the fuel is atomized, mixed with the air and prepared for complete combustion during the expansion phase.
- position 5 where the chamber walls of the two rotors touch, but do not rub against one another, since they have the same angular velocity, the chamber gas is conducted compressed into the vortex grooves.
- the vortex groove is formed in position 5 by the side grooves coming together in the IR and AR chamber walls (Fig. 4, parts 1.6, 2.6), or it is located entirely in the chamber wall of the outer rotor.
- fuel is injected into the swirl groove in a timely and quantitative manner.
- An air / fuel mixture is created, which leads to optimal combustion with high gas pressure through self-ignition or spark ignition.
- the blade plates in positions 6, 7 and 8 are pushed further in the circumferential direction, as a result of which the engine work is performed.
- the outlet opening is reached.
- the gas which is under high pressure, flows explosively out of the engine (Fig. 2).
- all gas molecules receive momentum in the outlet direction and leave the working chamber.
- the time required for purging and air supply charge is given, since the much more mobile gas does not have to follow the inertia of the piston.
- the C-MOTOR has many working chambers, in our example 8, and with one engine revolution in all working chambers all operations are carried out (sucking in, compressing, expanding, discharging), it has a quieter run, which is a 4-stroke piston engine with 16 cylinders corresponds.
- the vibration of the Wankel engine corresponds to a 4-stroke reciprocating engine with two cylinders. Nevertheless, a Wankel engine runs much more quietly than a reciprocating piston engine because no unbalance-generating mechanisms are required that convert the linear movement of the piston into rotation. This advantage is even more pronounced with the C-MOTOR.
- the C-MOTOR Since the C-MOTOR has no reciprocating pistons that are accelerated and decelerated to high speeds several thousand times a minute, the components can be subjected to higher loads. Since there are neither valves nor massively oscillating forces, very high speeds can also be achieved. A further increase in speed is possible by charging.
- the strength of the blade plates favors the following circumstance: there are stepped pressure drops between the working chambers, so that the blade plates are only loaded with the pressure difference. This enables a high working pressure.
- the reciprocating engine is not as thermally and mechanically resilient as the C-MOTOR and the resilience of the Wankel engine is even lower.
- a decisive advantage of the normal piston engine compared to the Wankel engine is that wall parts of the work space, which are exposed to the high temperatures of the combustion, come into contact with the low temperatures at the point of gas exchange in rapid, periodic alternation.
- This advantage also applies to the C-MOTOR. This is because the blade plates, the partial cylinders and the chamber walls alternately come into contact with combustion gases and fresh gases.
- the chamber area of the non-rotating side seal is small and lubricated with oil. The heat losses are therefore low.
- the chamber walls of the C-MOTOR segments are made of simple cross-sections and are only stressed by the pressure during work, they can be made from light, heat-insulating (ceramic) materials.
- Wankel and reciprocating engine lead to higher expenditure in the manufacture of the engine. At this point, the poorer engine starting with the Wankel engine must be mentioned, caused by poor sealing at low speeds.
- the importance of the invention by F. Wankel is the proof that a rotary piston engine is preferred for many hundreds of thousands of drivers and can work well (Mazda RX7) even with extremely unfavorable sealing conditions and other unfavorable parameters compared to the sophisticated reciprocating engine.
- the surface / volume ratio at the top dead center of a combustion chamber is much cheaper with the C-MOTOR than with a Wankel engine.
- the surface / volume ratio at bottom dead center can be improved by larger dimensions in engine construction (the engine is still much smaller than a corresponding reciprocating piston engine). It should be mentioned here that during combustion, the gases and the chamber walls of the C-MOTOR have the same speed of rotation, i.e. rest relative to each other, as is the case with the reciprocating piston engine. In contrast, the flame of the Wankel engine must spread over the trochoid surface spread at high peripheral speed. This is inconvenient for complete fuel burning.
- the round and flat surfaces of the motor elements, many of which have the same shape, are easier to manufacture. Therefore, the manufacturing costs for the C-MOTOR should be lower than for other engines. (see description of the machine for the hydraulics and p. 9).
- the C-MOTOR is suitable for all types of fuel, depending on the modified version as a diesel, gasoline, steam, H2- etc. engine. Fuel injection and candle ignition on the side of the engine cover are easy. This is another benefit. Since the injection and ignition take place before position 5 (Fig. 1) and not in the phase of the highest chamber temperature (positions 5, 6 or 7), the injection nozzle and spark plug are not as heavily loaded as with a reciprocating or Wankel engine.
- the injected fuel (in the diesel process) is not directed into the relatively stationary piston recess at the TDC point, but in an arc length of 45 o into the flanking lateral chamber wall recesses, called the swirl groove.
- the gas is guided axially into a trough channel, which can be designed differently depending on the operating mode.
- the C-MOTOR Fig. 4
- the oil is let in by a pump through a channel in the middle of the inner rotor axis. Due to the strong centrifugal force, the oil passes from this channel through the distribution channels, which run radially from the center to the outside, into the synchronous spaces of the inner rotor.
- the oil flows through the blade plates into the empty spaces of the outer rotor. There, the oil continues to flow out of the outer rotor from the engine through the channels and holes provided on the jacket side.
- the parts in the inner and outer rotor are cooled by the strong oil flow.
- the cooling and lubrication of the blade plate takes place as follows.
- the blade plate in position 8 (Fig.1), the surfaces of which are heated up strongly in the previous work step, is first cooled with fresh gas.
- the blade plate gradually dips into the spherical bearings of the inner and outer rotor and their oil spaces. Further cooling takes place through contact with the partial cylinders and the oil.
- the surface is wetted by the oil again.
- the oil is metered and sealed, cooling and lubricating to the relevant points by the pendulum movements of the blade plates and the cylinder segments.
- the blade plate is still cooled from the inside by the strong oil flow in its channels.
- the blade plate also serves as a conveyor bridge for AR cooling.
- the number of screws and springs in the outer rotor should be significantly smaller than in the inner rotor. These springs and screws in the outer rotor are hardly loaded by the effect of centrifugal forces.
- the screws can also be arranged offset (Fig. 7).
- To fix the inner rotor walls screws with holes and nuts are necessary (Fig.7).
- the number of retaining screws required is considerably greater than with the outer rotor due to the centrifugal forces acting differently here.
- chamber walls, the support segments of the plain bearing and the partial cylinders can have different cavities and oil cooling channels.

The coupling elements consist of:
- a) Cylinder segments that form a circular segment in the inner and outer rotor (Fig. 1). They form a kind of spherical plain bearing with small oscillating movements.
- b) Blade plates (Fig.4) which perform linear pendulum movements in the spherical bearing of the inner and outer rotor (Fig.4 parts 1.1, 3.1 3.2, 2.2 and 2.3).
- c) Synchronous surfaces in the inner rotor (Fig. 4, Part 1.5), which can be replaced by a cylindrical surface in the functional part. (The synchronous surfaces are also possible in the outer rotor). In the polygonal version, the chamber walls themselves also enable efficient synchronization (Fig.5). Since the entire length of the blade plates in the synchronous area act as coupling levers for power transmission and have sufficient strength and elasticity (supported by the resilient properties of the working medium), the synchronous support edges are on the inside of the outer rotor as well as on the jacket of the inner rotor ( Fig.4, parts 1.11 and 2.11) suitable to prevent asynchronous rotation of the rotors to each other. As the built model shows, this type of coupling is suitable for use on continuously adjustable machines.
- a) from the constant synchronous spaces in the inner rotor
- b) from the variable spaces resulting from the displacement of the pendulum blade plates in the partial cylinder bearings.
- the joints on the face of the partial cylinder
- the pins on the pendulum blade plates and
- the spacer between the partial cylinders,
By expanding the outer rotor, large eccentricities are possible, in contrast to the vane machine, where the eccentricity can only make up a fraction of the rotor radius.
Other advantages over the vane machine:
- 1. The pendulum blade plates do not slide at all on the track in the stator. This means lower friction losses and no radial wear on the pendulum blade plates. In the vane machine, the vanes slide at high speed and with high pressure (consisting of the medium pressure and the centrifugal force) on the stator track. This affects the efficiency and the service life of the machine.
- 2. Since the pendulum blade plates are mechanically guided into the functional position, an HCM does not need a relatively high speed in order to obtain sufficient centrifugal force by which the blades have to be pressed against the stator track. Because the seal is also constant (which will be discussed later), an HCM works well at a low speed. For the same reason (mechanical guidance), an HCM works reliably even at very high speeds. A vane machine is not suitable for a high speed, because the centrifugal force and the medium pressure cause high friction and wear losses.
- 3. The minimization of the gap on the pressurized (axial play compensation by the operating pressure) control disk is possible, since the pendulum blade plates cannot jam due to the mechanical guide, as can be the case with the wings.
- 4. The load capacity of the pendulum blade plates with an HCM is twice as high as with the blades of the vane machine. A force in the circumferential direction only acts on the blades or pendulum blade plates if the pressure in the two adjacent displacement spaces is of different magnitude, for example if one is connected to the discharge duct and the other to the intake duct. In the vane machine, this force is transmitted to the slots of the rotor in the manner of a bracket or a beam clamped on one side. With an HCM , pendulum blade plates are supported on both sides like a beam, i.e. they are loaded half as much. So you can work with twice the pressure.
In order to quickly transport the working fluid into the chamber, longitudinal bores can be drilled in the outer as well as in the inner rotor (necessary if the machine is long and at very high speeds).
The inner rotor body (Fig.4 Part 1.1), which also serves as the drive axis, is based on two roller or slide bearings that are located in the housing.
The outer rotor is fixed in its axis of rotation by a plain bearing (Fig.4 part 8) or several wheels fixed in the housing, or by roller bearings. When the drive shaft on the inner rotor moves, the outer rotor also moves, for example clockwise. The working chamber moves from position 1 (Fig. 1) to
- ri
- = Arbeitskammerradius vom Innenrotor
- ra
- = Arbeitskammerradius vom Außenrotor
- z
- = Anzahl der Zellen
- e
- = Exzentrität ( ra - ri ) ... in unserem Fall kann man e = 0.22*r annehmen.
- s
- = Stärke der Schaufelplatte ... = 0.1*r
Für einer Axialkolbenmaschine gilt:
- rk
- = Kolbenradius
- z
- = Anzahl der Kolben (z = 7 bis 9)
- r
- = Teilkreis an welchem sich die Zylinderachsen befinden
- α
- Δp
- = Pressure difference between: output and input of the pump, input and output of the motor
- V h
- = geometric stroke volume
- η mech.
- = Mechanical efficiency
- η vol.
- = Volumetric efficiency
The formula for vane machine can therefore be used for volume formation:
- b
- = Cell length ... can be assumed between b = 2 * r to b = 4 * r. In our case b = 2 * r is assumed.
- r i
- = Working chamber radius from the inner rotor
- r a
- = Working chamber radius from the outer rotor
- e.g.
- = Number of cells
- e
- = Eccentricity (r a - r i ) ... in our case one can assume e = 0.22 * r.
- s
- = Thickness of the blade plate ... = 0.1 * r
The following applies to an axial piston machine:
- r k
- = Piston radius
- e.g.
- = Number of pistons (z = 7 to 9)
- r
- = Pitch circle on which the cylinder axes are located
- α
- = Angle between the axes of the cylinders and the perpendicular to the swashplate (usually α = 20 o )
(z / 2 takes into account the distance between the cylinders)
For z = 8 and α = 20 o
The distance between the pitch circle r and the outer edge of the housing can be assumed to be the same for both machines. (The length of the axial piston machine is much longer)
So is
- a) Pendelschaufelplatten und Teilzylinder
For the comparison of the volumetric efficiency η vol. Both machines use the formula for leakage current
- Q
- L = leakage current
- Δp
- = Pressure difference = p₁ - p₂
- d
- = Piston diameter
- s
- = Gap height
- ν
- = dynamic viscosity
- l
- = Gap length
If s - 0 , the losses in the pressure difference or the viscosity would also play no role. (with HCM , the gap length around the joint bearing is also large).
Looking at the chamber of the HCM, the working pressure of the fluid obviously leads to the closing of the gaps. This affects the column between the:
- a) Pendulum blade plates and partial cylinders
- b) part cylinder and bearing bores.
Another consequence of this seal is that this machine is insensitive to contamination.
Large tolerances in pendulum blade bearings is also the reason that this machine is insensitive to the temperature shock.
This results in reliability and a long service life.
One can say about the side losses here that they are small, since the side covers (control discs) are pressurized.
For extreme demands you can improve the seal on the control disc by:
- a) attaching the sealing strips to the side ends of the pendulum blade plates, partial cylinders and rotors
- b) readjusting the screws, the worn gap between the control disc and rotors together with the pendulum blade plates and reduce partial cylinders
- c) as b), but self-adjusting by one or more small pressure cylinders
- 1. -The viscosity coefficient does not play a special role. This fact enables the use of HFA, HFB and HFC liquids. Because of this there is no fire risk, no pollution and much smaller mechanical losses (friction) during the transmission of the energy,
- 2. -Also a high pressure difference Δp does not lead to higher leakage losses. This enables the use of higher working pressures and thus a higher working torque M,
- 3.-Even with extremely slow rotation of the machine, little leakage current will flow per work step. In other words, an HCM also works economically at low speeds, which is important when starting up, controlling and other operating modes.
- a) this machine also requires a minimum speed of 500 rpm and more,
- b) The disadvantage of all piston machines is that the medium must follow the movement of the piston. This, however, generates a speed of 0 for each revolution. The medium must be braked and accelerated again and again and there are great mechanical losses and also a limitation for the maximum speed. The HCM does not have these disadvantages.
- a) Leckage
- a) leakage
Since the hydraulic fluids have a very low viscosity, the leakage rate can reach 30 times that of mineral oils. These obstacles do not exist with the HCM , as the gaps are closed by the operating pressure, as already discussed. - b) wear
Low viscosity of the hydraulic fluids also leads to high wear on the sealing sliding surfaces. This disadvantage does not exist with the HCM for the following reasons:
The cavities of the inner as well as the outer rotor are connected to one another by channels in the pendulum blade plates, which are filled with a lubricating / sealing liquid. This lubricating / sealing fluid comes from a higher-level reserve container into the cavities by means of an annular channel on the side or through an axial bore in the inner rotor. This liquid is separated from the working medium by the closed gaps. By moving the pendulum blade plates and partial cylinders back and forth, sliding support and Lubricated sealing surfaces in a metered manner, thus preventing wear. But even if the sliding elements wear out a lot, the seal remains intact, as described above. This also applies to the sides of the rotors, which can be worn down to the millimeter without the sealing properties deteriorating. These wear reserves are unique to the HCM . It must be emphasized here that no other displacement machine has these properties.
Depending on the operating mode, the lubricant / sealant can also be brought into a cycle by the pumping action of the pendulum blade plates. This pumping action can bring the lubricant to the cooling container if necessary, generate a compensating pressure of the lubricant with respect to the working medium in order to relieve the partial cylinders at extremely high pressures. - c) Corossion
Since the sliding surface is lubricated and separated from the working medium containing water, there is no risk of corrosion. - d) cavitation
The conditions are similar to c) - 9. Low noise
The noise of an HCM should not be greater than that of a vane machine, since the partial cylinders have a noise-dampening effect. A vane machine is considered to be quiet.
All thoughts cannot be discussed here. Above all, a large selection of suitable materials is of great importance for an optimal solution to the tribological problems.
The experience and elements of other hydrostatic machines are available to build an HCM . For example, the housing of a wing line machine can be used. The stator track can serve as a bore for a hydrodynamic or hydrostatic bearing of the outer rotor. Some elements of the inner rotor are also available. This possibility would significantly reduce the manufacturing costs of such a machine.
Based on the above, it can be stated that the overall coefficient of effectiveness of the HCM must be a few percent higher than with other hydrostatic machines. The consequences of this, such as lower manufacturing costs, lower energy consumption, smaller volume, lower weight or ecological compatibility, have been described in detail in this report.
The long-known fact that when burning fuel in an engine, a fraction of the developed thermal energy is used for work has led to great efforts to improve the thermal efficiency of these machines (currently 25-30%). Theoretical and practical knowledge has shown that high gas temperatures (2nd law of thermodynamics η th = (1-T o / T), pressures (η th = 1 - 1 / (ε χ-1 )) and the adiabatic processes for better The increased temperatures and pressures in the combustion chamber, the controlled and more complete combustion through better fuel / air mixture and the reduced friction losses through better engine designs have led to the fact that the specific fuel consumption has decreased in the past decades Breakthrough to further fuel savings, which can realistically be around 30% and more, has not yet been achieved.
However, the prerequisites for this have been created recently. New ceramic materials have been developed, such as silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), the strength of which is better at normal temperature than that of steel. This strength is maintained even at 1200 oC . Dimensional stability behaves similarly. The wear resistance is much higher, so that in many cases lubrication is no longer necessary. The specific weight and heat capacity of this ceramic are also significantly smaller. These are all necessary requirements for the construction of an adiabatic motor. However, the notched bar impact value is lower for ceramic materials than for steel. Precisely because of this property, it is not possible to successfully apply the advantageous properties of the ceramic materials to existing engine designs.
Because of the thermal stresses, the ceramic components for an internal combustion engine must not be made of too large pieces. It is not favorable to use them where there are large differences in the thermal load. They should be subjected to pressure as much as possible, sudden loads should be avoided.
This is the concept behind the C-MOTOR. However, it has been shown that this concept also has significant advantages in the case of conventional materials which are used in engine construction.
The considerations in this description apply to both the ceramic and the normal materials used in engine construction.
At this point it must be mentioned that the raw materials for the silicon nitride, So both nitrogen and sicilium are among the inexhaustible, most widespread elements on our planet. However, the use of Si₃N₄ is not yet profitable. This is also the reason to first build a C-MOTOR from conventional materials.
Well, in order to avoid the disadvantages of the common combustion machines, the complex considerations led to a rotary displacement machine, or C-MOTOR for short.
- a) Einfachere und billigere Konstruktion ( s.
So far, the invention of F. Wankel , known as the Wankel engine, has been the only one in the field of internal combustion engines to be successful, but not in such a way that the engine could seriously compete with a conventional reciprocating engine. Kinematically, the Wankel engine offers an interesting solution, but the mechanical and thermodynamic properties are worse, the manufacture (trochoids) is more expensive and the service life is shorter.
The C-MOTOR is designed so that there are no disadvantages of the Wankel principle, but it has significant advantages over the reciprocating piston engine. The advantages are in the following criteria:
- a) Simpler and cheaper construction (see p. 16 and the description of the machine for the hydraulics).
- b) Reliability and longer service life (see description of the machine for the hydraulics).
- c) Higher thermal and mechanical efficiency and therefore lower fuel consumption.
- d) Significantly smaller size and thus lower weight for comparable motor outputs. (see description of the machine for the hydraulics).
- e) Since the machine combines the advantages of reciprocating (static pressure increase) and turbo machines (higher speed, steady delivery), the engine is characterized by a very smooth running.

Beim C-MOTOR sind also nichtstationäre Strömungsvorgänge weitgehend unterdrückt.
When starting the engine, the outer and inner rotors move synchronously, e.g. clockwise. The working chamber moves from position 1 (Fig. 1) to
Thanks to both regulated stone times and adjustable opening cross-sections, the gas exchange can take place optimally, depending on the engine speed. The amount of exhaust gas in the working chamber can also be controlled. This has a favorable effect both on the fuel consumption at partial load and on the pollutant emissions.
In contrast to the reciprocating piston engine, the time required for purging and air supply charge is given, since the much more mobile gas does not have to follow the inertia of the piston.
Since the C-MOTOR has many working chambers, in our example 8, and with one engine revolution in all working chambers all operations are carried out (sucking in, compressing, expanding, discharging), it has a quieter run, which is a 4-stroke piston engine with 16 cylinders corresponds. The vibration of the Wankel engine corresponds to a 4-stroke reciprocating engine with two cylinders. Nevertheless, a Wankel engine runs much more quietly than a reciprocating piston engine because no unbalance-generating mechanisms are required that convert the linear movement of the piston into rotation. This advantage is even more pronounced with the C-MOTOR.
With the C-MOTOR, non-stationary flow processes are largely suppressed. There is more of a turbine-like operation. This has a favorable effect on gas exchange. In the case of a reciprocating piston engine, the transport of the fresh gas is interrupted by the valve closure, i.e. brought to a standstill in front of the valve. When opening the valve, the gas must reach the maximum speed again in the shortest possible time. This means time and energy loss. Something similar also takes place with the Wankel engine (because there are only 3 chambers in an elliptical-like trochoid).
It follows that a C-MOTOR runs with little vibration.
The C-MOTOR is a two-stroke engine. As such, it must be suitable for high performance (eg marine engines) and have low fuel consumption.
Since the C-MOTOR has no reciprocating pistons that are accelerated and decelerated to high speeds several thousand times a minute, the components can be subjected to higher loads.
Since there are neither valves nor massively oscillating forces, very high speeds can also be achieved.
A further increase in speed is possible by charging.
The strength of the blade plates favors the following circumstance: there are stepped pressure drops between the working chambers, so that the blade plates are only loaded with the pressure difference. This enables a high working pressure.
The reciprocating engine is not as thermally and mechanically resilient as the C-MOTOR and the resilience of the Wankel engine is even lower.
A decisive advantage of the normal piston engine compared to the Wankel engine is that wall parts of the work space, which are exposed to the high temperatures of the combustion, come into contact with the low temperatures at the point of gas exchange in rapid, periodic alternation. This advantage also applies to the C-MOTOR. This is because the blade plates, the partial cylinders and the chamber walls alternately come into contact with combustion gases and fresh gases. On the other hand, the chamber area of the non-rotating side seal is small and lubricated with oil. The heat losses are therefore low.
As the chamber walls of the C-MOTOR segments are made of simple cross-sections and are only stressed by the pressure during work, they can be made from light, heat-insulating (ceramic) materials.
The rapid gas exchange and the possibility of a constant pressure process, the heat-insulating construction (heat-resistant and heat-insulating chamber walls) largely prevent heat loss. For this reason, this engine is almost adiabatic.
Since one side of the Wankel engine is always hot and the other cold, there is greater wear and deformation on the hot side, which worsens the chamber seal. The sealing strip slides over the trochoid surface at approx. 20 m / sec. Your game in the groove must be carefully coordinated. Frictional losses, wear ("chatter marks") and poor gas sealing cannot be avoided here. The C-MOTOR does not have these problems.
The side exhaust seal is also much worse with the Wankel engine than with the C-MOTOR. The sealing strips on the side surfaces of the eccentrically rotating piston perform surface sliding. The result is loss of friction, wear and leakage. However, the sealing strips on the C-MOTOR perform concentric movements.
The gas sealing problems and friction losses also exist with the reciprocating piston (piston rings). (Average piston speed for gasoline engines is 14 m / s, a blade plate for C-MOTOR moves 10 times slower).
Since the seal on the C-MOTOR remains relatively constant at both lower and higher speeds (see description of the machine for the hydraulics), the performance is also uniform. The requirements for a gearbox are therefore modest.
The compression ratio of the Wankel engine is limited (up to 0.94MPa) due to both the trochoid shape and the eccentric synchronous toothing. This results in higher fuel consumption.
Although it is possible to use higher compression in reciprocating engines, many more robustly built eccentric mechanisms (e.g. crank drive) and other linear oscillating parts lead to higher mechanical losses in the form of waste heat. This also results in higher fuel consumption.
Here the C-MOTOR is superior. The disadvantages mentioned with the Wankel and reciprocating engine lead to higher expenditure in the manufacture of the engine.
At this point, the poorer engine starting with the Wankel engine must be mentioned, caused by poor sealing at low speeds.
The importance of the invention by F. Wankel is the proof that a rotary piston engine is preferred for many hundreds of thousands of drivers and can work well (Mazda RX7) even with extremely unfavorable sealing conditions and other unfavorable parameters compared to the sophisticated reciprocating engine.
The surface / volume ratio at the top dead center of a combustion chamber is much cheaper with the C-MOTOR than with a Wankel engine. In contrast to the Wankel engine, it is possible for the unfavorable effect of the surface / volume ratio, through higher combustion temperatures, through charging, through good fuel / air mixing in the vortex groove and through the use of materials with low thermal conductivities and low heat capacity (ceramic with cavities or porous Ceramic beneath the surface) for the chamber segments, even more than any other type of engine. The surface / volume ratio at bottom dead center can be improved by larger dimensions in engine construction (the engine is still much smaller than a corresponding reciprocating piston engine).
The round and flat surfaces of the motor elements, many of which have the same shape, are easier to manufacture. Therefore, the manufacturing costs for the C-MOTOR should be lower than for other engines. (see description of the machine for the hydraulics and p. 9). The C-MOTOR is suitable for all types of fuel, depending on the modified version as a diesel, gasoline, steam, H₂- etc. engine.
Fuel injection and candle ignition on the side of the engine cover are easy. This is another benefit. Since the injection and ignition take place before position 5 (Fig. 1) and not in the phase of the highest chamber temperature (
The injected fuel (in the diesel process) is not directed into the relatively stationary piston recess at the TDC point, but in an arc length of 45 o into the flanking lateral chamber wall recesses, called the swirl groove. This creates a good fuel / air mixture, which is necessary for complete combustion.
From the swirl groove, the gas is guided axially into a trough channel, which can be designed differently depending on the operating mode.
With the C-MOTOR (Fig. 4) the oil is let in by a pump through a channel in the middle of the inner rotor axis. Due to the strong centrifugal force, the oil passes from this channel through the distribution channels, which run radially from the center to the outside, into the synchronous spaces of the inner rotor. From here, the oil flows through the blade plates into the empty spaces of the outer rotor. There, the oil continues to flow out of the outer rotor from the engine through the channels and holes provided on the jacket side. The parts in the inner and outer rotor are cooled by the strong oil flow.
The cooling and lubrication of the blade plate takes place as follows. The blade plate in position 8 (Fig.1), the surfaces of which are heated up strongly in the previous work step, is first cooled with fresh gas. At the same time, the blade plate gradually dips into the spherical bearings of the inner and outer rotor and their oil spaces. Further cooling takes place through contact with the partial cylinders and the oil. The surface is wetted by the oil again. The oil is metered and sealed, cooling and lubricating to the relevant points by the pendulum movements of the blade plates and the cylinder segments. The blade plate is still cooled from the inside by the strong oil flow in its channels. The blade plate also serves as a conveyor bridge for AR cooling. It must be mentioned here that a high gas pressure prevents the possibility of oil entering the working chamber.
The compression in the working chamber presses the chamber walls (Fig. 4) to the partial cylinders. This results in a new type of efficient sealing system. The chamber walls press against the partial cylinders and these again against the blade plates. This ensures good gas sealing. The construction guarantees perfect function even when the chamber walls are very worn.
The chamber walls can also have sealing strips in the form of square or cylindrical wire, as well as soft packs (Fig.5).
In certain cases, such as with ceramic materials, it is possible to cool, lubricate and seal instead of with oil, with water, or water with dispersed oil. Evaporation creates steam cushions with high pressure that take over the functions of pure oil. The hot steam generated by the cooling drives a turbocharger or compressor, is expanded, liquefied by a condenser and brought into the repeating cycle. This option is particularly suitable for high-performance engines. Compressed air can also be used in special cases.
The chamber walls are always pressed against the partial cylinders by springs and screws in order to prevent the oil from entering the working chamber when it is at a standstill. The seal is also secured on the raceways on the chamber walls and partial cylinders, which are reduced due to wear after a long period of use.
The number of screws and springs in the outer rotor should be significantly smaller than in the inner rotor. These springs and screws in the outer rotor are hardly loaded by the effect of centrifugal forces. The screws can also be arranged offset (Fig. 7). To fix the inner rotor walls, screws with holes and nuts are necessary (Fig.7). Although the gas compression pushes the inner rotor walls inwards, the number of retaining screws required is considerably greater than with the outer rotor due to the centrifugal forces acting differently here.
Depending on the working conditions, chamber walls, the support segments of the plain bearing and the partial cylinders can have different cavities and oil cooling channels.
- 2. Ein 8-Kammer C-MOTOR entspricht einem 16-Zylinder 4-Takt.
A comparison shows the following facts:
- 1. The round and flat surfaces of the motor elements, many of which have the same shape, are easier to manufacture.
- 2. An 8-chamber C-ENGINE corresponds to a 16-cylinder 4-stroke.
