Definitions

  • the invention is in the field of further processing of printed products and relates to a method and a device according to the preambles of claims 1 and 14, with which various printed products are inserted into a folded main product while it is being transported continuously.
  • a ready-to-ship unit for example, preliminary products or inserts (insert products) are inserted into a folded newspaper (main product).
  • the folded main product is opened and the insert products are inserted between the folded parts of the main product, advantageously while the main product is being conveyed continuously.
  • a plug-in drum for example, is used for such a continuously working plug-in. This has a number of cells in which the main products are transported and to which insert products are fed one after the other.
  • Insert drums are described for example in CH-A-584153. These are cell drums into which the main product, for example as a scale flow, is always one product per cell. During the first rotation, the main product is opened and moved in the axial direction of the drum in the cell. During a conductive revolution, a first individual insert product or a first group of insert products is inserted and the main product with the insert products is moved again in the axial direction of the drum, for example for a further insertion process. Several insert products or groups of insert products can also be inserted in the same way. To keep production speed high, the cells must be as narrow as possible. At the same production speed, wider cells require larger drum diameters or higher revolutions, both requirements that require higher mass accelerations, which is not desirable.
  • the volume of the insertable products is therefore limited, less by the shape and size of the main product than by the shape and size of the cells of the insertion drum. Furthermore, the products in the cells have to be displaced, which creates mechanical friction that has to be overcome.
  • the object of the invention is now to demonstrate an improved method and to provide a correspondingly improved device with the aid of which plug-in products can be inserted into a continuous stream of folded main products.
  • the volume of the insertable printed products should be significantly more independent of the device than is the case with known such devices. Large volumes of insert products should also be able to be inserted even at very high production speeds.
  • the device should be easy to implement and be able to be integrated into known transport systems for printed products without special interfaces.
  • the method according to the invention is based on using the folded main products as collecting bags, so to speak. For this purpose, they are conveyed with the fold counter to the bottom and transversely to the transport direction, for example by a number of grippers on a pulling element, such that each gripper holds the rear folding part of a main product and the front folding part of the subsequent product from above.
  • a number of insertion points are used to insert products or or groups of insert products supplied.
  • the volume of products that can be inserted as a whole is primarily determined by the distance between the grippers.
  • the volume of products that can be inserted in a single insertion process is determined by the accessible space between the grippers. Since the distance between the grippers and thus also the space accessible between them can be made variable at least over limited transport routes using known methods, the possible volume of the insert products is essentially independent of the device and only dependent on the size and shape of the main product.
  • the main products are held and transported at the top in this method according to the invention, while also being inserted from above.
  • the method according to the invention places on the main product is that it is folded or foldable. This can be, for example, a single or double fold, a single folded sheet or a plurality of folded sheets lying one inside the other.
  • FIG. 1 shows a diagram of an exemplary variant of the method according to the invention for inserting printed products into a folded main product.
  • the main products H are continuously fed to the insertion section 1 with the fold towards the bottom in the open state.
  • This is implemented, for example, with a plug-in drum 2, as is known, for example, from CH-A-584153 or EP-A-0241634, which is assumed to be known here are.
  • the main products are introduced into this insertion drum 2 as a shingled stream, always one main product per cell (not shown in the figure).
  • the main products are opened while they are being handled in the drum and moved in the direction of the drum axis by at least their width transversely to the transport direction and parallel to the drum axis.
  • the main products are taken over from the insertion drum (take-over point U) by a number of grippers 4 which are moved essentially tangentially to the insertion drum 2 by a pulling element 3 (shown schematically as a dash-dot line).
  • Each gripper 4 grips the one in the conveying direction F rear folding part of a main product and the front folding part of the subsequent product.
  • These two folding parts protrude immediately adjacent to one another from adjacent cells of the insertion drum and can easily be gripped by a gripper which synchronizes with the insertion drum and onto the cell partition is aligned.
  • the main products H and the grippers 4 are conveyed to the takeover point offset, that is to say at essentially the same intervals but out of phase by half a distance (in relation to the center of the main products).
  • the pulling element 3 conveys the grippers 4 and the main products H, which together form a continuous folding band, on the insertion section 1 below any number of insertion stations 5 in such a way that individual insertion products E or groups of insertion products pass between them from above can be plugged into the main products.
  • the insertion of the insert products from above is realized, for example, by a feed conveyor 5.1 with controllable clamps 5.2, the clamps 5.2 transporting the insert products E freely suspended and the feed conveyor 5.1 having essentially the same conveying direction as the insert path 1 and this at an acute angle from above is approaching.
  • the end products HE that is to say main products H, in which all the insert products E are inserted, are transferred, for example, to a further transport system 6 in a delivery point A.
  • This can be a further conveyor 6.1 with controllable clamps 6.2, the clamps 6.2 capturing the end products HE from below, that is to say at the fold of the main product.
  • the onward transport system 6 is synchronized with the insertion section 1 in such a way that the time intervals between brackets are the same and that the brackets of the onward transport system 6 securely guide the end products HE before the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 open and let go of the main products.
  • the main advantage of the insertion method according to the invention is that the main products H are held on the same side by the grippers 4 on which they are also inserted and not on the fold side as in the known systems.
  • Each main product H hangs freely with the fold down between two grippers 4. Since the fold area is not held in place mechanically, its shape depends primarily on the inserted products that have already been inserted.
  • the insertion products E are moved as deeply as possible into the fold by the force of gravity and by the slight movement of the main product H produced by the conveying.
  • plug-in products E which are already in the main product H, assume a defined position relative to this when further plug-in products E are inserted , it is advantageous not to convey the main product hanging in a precisely vertical direction, but to shift the fold of each main product in the direction of conveyance in the conveying direction with respect to the perpendicular to the middle between the two grippers that hold the product.
  • the folding part H h of the main product in the conveying direction thus forms a storage surface for the insert products. This can be achieved in various ways, in particular by a corresponding position of the grippers at the insertion points, which will be described in detail in connection with FIGS. 3, 4, 5 and 6.
  • Process variants of the process shown in FIG. 1 consist in that the feed of the main product H into the insertion section 1 is not realized by an insertion drum 2, but by another means of transport.
  • This means of transport places the requirement that the main products H with the folded edge transversely to the conveying direction (upwards or downwards), in the open state, are guided to the takeover point (U) in such a way that both folding parts (H v , H h ) each Main product can be detected individually on the edge opposite the folded edge.

  • a further variant consists in that the end products HE are not transferred to a conveyor 6.1 with brackets 6.2, but to another conveyor system.
  • This transport system must be designed in such a way that it can receive the end products HE in a substantially vertical position with the folded edge of the main product H facing downwards and that it can support and guide the end products from the fold side before the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 open and let go of the main products.
  • the insertion section is not a conveyor section with constant gripper distances, but a conveyor section on which the gripper distances vary.
  • Devices for such conveyor lines are described for example in EP-A-309702, which is assumed to be known here.
  • Such a conveyor line can, for example, be designed and controlled in such a way that the gripper spacing at the insertion point is increased and the pockets formed by the main products for the insertion of voluminous insertion products are further open.
  • a further variant consists in that each folding part of each main product is gripped by a separate gripper and conveyed over the insertion section, whereby the distances between grippers that grip the folding parts of a main product can be greater than the distance between grippers that fold the folding parts of neighboring main products to grab.
  • a further variant of the method consists in creating the asymmetrical hanging position of this main product relative to the perpendicular to the perpendicular between the two grippers that hold the two folding parts of the main product, in that the edges of the two folding parts that face away from the fold are not caught equally far from the fold.

Abstract

Folded main products (H) are brought from an inserting drum (2) with a fold directed at right angles to the conveying direction and in the open state to an acceptance station (U), where they are gripped at edges facing the fold by grippers in such a way that a gripper always grips the rear folding part (Hh) of a main product in the conveying direction together with the front folding part (Hv) of the following main product. As an almost continuous folding belt the main products are conveyed through an insertion section (1), whilst from above and between the grippers the insert products (E) are inserted in the main products.

Description

The invention is in the field of further processing of printed products and relates to a method and a device according to the preambles of claims 1 and 14, with which various printed products are inserted into a folded main product while it is being transported continuously.

To produce a ready-to-ship unit (end product), for example, preliminary products or inserts (insert products) are inserted into a folded newspaper (main product). For this purpose, the folded main product is opened and the insert products are inserted between the folded parts of the main product, advantageously while the main product is being conveyed continuously. A plug-in drum, for example, is used for such a continuously working plug-in. This has a number of cells in which the main products are transported and to which insert products are fed one after the other.

Insert drums are described for example in CH-A-584153. With the known insertion drums, the volume of the insertable products is therefore limited, less by the shape and size of the main product than by the shape and size of the cells of the insertion drum. Furthermore, the products in the cells have to be displaced, which creates mechanical friction that has to be overcome.

On the other hand, continuous methods are known for collecting printed products, for which purpose, for example, a transport device with collecting pockets is used, which is continuously guided past various feed points by a pulling element and is loaded with products there. Such a method and a corresponding device are described, for example, in CH-A-668245. With this collection too, the volume of the collectible products mainly depends on the shape and size of the bags. The same applies here that wider bags for higher volumes of products at the same high production speeds have higher transport speeds condition. Different bags are advantageously used for very different collection volumes, which means converting the device.

The object of the invention is now to demonstrate an improved method and to provide a correspondingly improved device with the aid of which plug-in products can be inserted into a continuous stream of folded main products. The volume of the insertable printed products should be significantly more independent of the device than is the case with known such devices. Large volumes of insert products should also be able to be inserted even at very high production speeds. The device should be easy to implement and be able to be integrated into known transport systems for printed products without special interfaces.

This object is achieved by the method and the device according to the corresponding patent claims 1 and 14.

The method according to the invention is based on using the folded main products as collecting bags, so to speak. For this purpose, they are conveyed with the fold counter to the bottom and transversely to the transport direction, for example by a number of grippers on a pulling element, such that each gripper holds the rear folding part of a main product and the front folding part of the subsequent product from above. In other words, this means that the two folding parts of a main product are each held at the top by a gripper and that the main product forms an insert pocket that is open towards the top and is hanging between the two grippers. Between the grippers, a number of insertion points are used to insert products or or groups of insert products supplied. In this case, the volume of products that can be inserted as a whole is primarily determined by the distance between the grippers. The volume of products that can be inserted in a single insertion process is determined by the accessible space between the grippers. Since the distance between the grippers and thus also the space accessible between them can be made variable at least over limited transport routes using known methods, the possible volume of the insert products is essentially independent of the device and only dependent on the size and shape of the main product.

The main products are held and transported at the top in this method according to the invention, while also being inserted from above. This means that the pulling element of the plug-in section is not arranged above the transported products, but to the side thereof.

The only requirement that the method according to the invention places on the main product is that it is folded or foldable. This can be, for example, a single or double fold, a single folded sheet or a plurality of folded sheets lying one inside the other.

FIG. 1 shows a diagram of an exemplary variant of the method according to the invention for inserting printed products into a folded main product. The main products H are continuously fed to the insertion section 1 with the fold towards the bottom in the open state. This is implemented, for example, with a plug-in drum 2, as is known, for example, from CH-A-584153 or EP-A-0241634, which is assumed to be known here are. The main products are introduced into this insertion drum 2 as a shingled stream, always one main product per cell (not shown in the figure). The main products are opened while they are being handled in the drum and moved in the direction of the drum axis by at least their width transversely to the transport direction and parallel to the drum axis. After this one handling in the insertion drum, the main products are taken over from the insertion drum (take-over point U) by a number of grippers 4 which are moved essentially tangentially to the insertion drum 2 by a pulling element 3 (shown schematically as a dash-dot line). Each gripper 4 grips the one in the conveying direction F rear folding part of a main product and the front folding part of the subsequent product. These two folding parts, with their edges facing away from the fold, protrude immediately adjacent to one another from adjacent cells of the insertion drum and can easily be gripped by a gripper which synchronizes with the insertion drum and onto the cell partition is aligned. The main products H and the grippers 4 are conveyed to the takeover point offset, that is to say at essentially the same intervals but out of phase by half a distance (in relation to the center of the main products).

The pulling element 3 conveys the grippers 4 and the main products H, which together form a continuous folding band, on the insertion section 1 below any number of insertion stations 5 in such a way that individual insertion products E or groups of insertion products pass between them from above can be plugged into the main products. The insertion of the insert products from above is realized, for example, by a feed conveyor 5.1 with controllable clamps 5.2, the clamps 5.2 transporting the insert products E freely suspended and the feed conveyor 5.1 having essentially the same conveying direction as the insert path 1 and this at an acute angle from above is approaching.

The end products HE, that is to say main products H, in which all the insert products E are inserted, are transferred, for example, to a further transport system 6 in a delivery point A. This can be a further conveyor 6.1 with controllable clamps 6.2, the clamps 6.2 capturing the end products HE from below, that is to say at the fold of the main product. The onward transport system 6 is synchronized with the insertion section 1 in such a way that the time intervals between brackets are the same and that the brackets of the onward transport system 6 securely guide the end products HE before the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 open and let go of the main products.

The main advantage of the insertion method according to the invention is that the main products H are held on the same side by the grippers 4 on which they are also inserted and not on the fold side as in the known systems. Each main product H hangs freely with the fold down between two grippers 4. Since the fold area is not held in place mechanically, its shape depends primarily on the inserted products that have already been inserted. The insertion products E are moved as deeply as possible into the fold by the force of gravity and by the slight movement of the main product H produced by the conveying.

So that plug-in products E, which are already in the main product H, assume a defined position relative to this when further plug-in products E are inserted , it is advantageous not to convey the main product hanging in a precisely vertical direction, but to shift the fold of each main product in the direction of conveyance in the conveying direction with respect to the perpendicular to the middle between the two grippers that hold the product. The folding part H h of the main product in the conveying direction thus forms a storage surface for the insert products. This can be achieved in various ways, in particular by a corresponding position of the grippers at the insertion points, which will be described in detail in connection with FIGS. 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Even when the main products H are taken over by the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 and when the end products HE are delivered to the further transport system 6, it is advantageous to be able to control the hanging position of the main products H to a limited extent so that they can be taken over or delivered smoothly can. Thus, as shown in FIG. 1, a position with a trailing fold edge is advantageous for the transfer from an insertion drum, and a position with a leading fold edge is advantageous for dispensing.

Process variants of the process shown in FIG. 1 consist in that the feed of the main product H into the insertion section 1 is not realized by an insertion drum 2, but by another means of transport. This means of transport places the requirement that the main products H with the folded edge transversely to the conveying direction (upwards or downwards), in the open state, are guided to the takeover point (U) in such a way that both folding parts (H v , H h ) each Main product can be detected individually on the edge opposite the folded edge.

Another variant consists in that the insertion of insert products E is not realized by feed conveyors 5.1 with clamps 5.2 but with another transport system. The transport system must meet the condition that the insert products or groups of insert products are transported to the insertion point in a substantially vertical position and with a free or guided lower edge.

A further variant consists in that the end products HE are not transferred to a conveyor 6.1 with brackets 6.2, but to another conveyor system. This transport system must be designed in such a way that it can receive the end products HE in a substantially vertical position with the folded edge of the main product H facing downwards and that it can support and guide the end products from the fold side before the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 open and let go of the main products.

Another method variant is that the insertion section is not a conveyor section with constant gripper distances, but a conveyor section on which the gripper distances vary. Devices for such conveyor lines are described for example in EP-A-309702, which is assumed to be known here. Such a conveyor line can, for example, be designed and controlled in such a way that the gripper spacing at the insertion point is increased and the pockets formed by the main products for the insertion of voluminous insertion products are further open.

A further variant consists in that each folding part of each main product is gripped by a separate gripper and conveyed over the insertion section, whereby the distances between grippers that grip the folding parts of a main product can be greater than the distance between grippers that fold the folding parts of neighboring main products to grab.

A further variant of the method consists in creating the asymmetrical hanging position of this main product relative to the perpendicular to the perpendicular between the two grippers that hold the two folding parts of the main product, in that the edges of the two folding parts that face away from the fold are not caught equally far from the fold. In other words, that the front folding part H v of a main product in the conveying direction forms a shorter, the rear folding part H h in the conveying direction forms a longer hanging wall of the insert pocket formed by the main product, so that it assumes a hanging position which is favorable for insertion even without a corresponding position of the grippers. A corresponding transfer from an insertion drum is described in detail in connection with FIG. 4.

Such guidance of the tension member 3 of the insertion section is in no way mandatory. The insertion section can have gradients and / or curves without having any effect on the method according to the invention.

FIG. 2 shows in more detail than FIG. 1 the method for taking over the folded main products from the insertion drum 2 by the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1. The insertion drum 2 has cells which are separated from one another by radial cell dividing walls 21.1 to 21.4. The cell dividing walls are shown in section with sectional planes that are gradually shifted from 21.1 to 21.4 in the direction of the drum axis from the area of the drum axis in which the main products are introduced (entrance area, 21.1 and 21.2) to the area of the drum in which the main products are taken over by the grippers of the insertion section (takeover area, 21.3 and 21.4). The main products H.1 to H.3 are therefore visible, also cut, in different takeover stages.

The cells of the insertion drum are divided essentially radially from one another by cell dividing walls 21.1 to 21.4 and extend in the direction of the drum axis at least twice the width of the main products to be processed. A conveyor carriage 22 is arranged on the base of each cell and conveys a printed product standing in the cell in the direction of the drum axis from the entrance area into the takeover area, while it is pressed by a pressing lever 23 against one side of the conveyor carriage and thus held. On the cell partition walls, support plates 24 are arranged in the area of the cell opening in the direction of the drum axis and extend into two adjacent cells. The pulling element 3 of the insertion section 1 (shown schematically as a dash-dotted line) is guided to the insertion drum in such a way that the grippers 4 reach the drum circumference in the uppermost region of the drum and are aligned with the cell dividing walls.

The folded main products are introduced into the cells of the insertion drum 2 and opened (not visible in the figure) in such a way that they rest with the fold in the conveyor carriage 22, held in place by the pressing lever 23. The folding parts are separated from one another when they are opened and lie essentially on the two cell dividing walls bordering the cell. They are held in this position in the region of their edges facing away from the fold by the supporting plate 24 sliding over them. Conveyor carriage 22, press lever 23 and support plate 24 now move in the direction of the drum axis (perpendicular to the paper plane of the figure) and also move the main product into the takeover area of the drum, over which the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 move. The cell partitions (21.3 and 21.4) are formed in this area as thin sheets, at least in the area of the cell opening. The main products are supported by the support plates 24 until they reach the area of the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 are promoted. There, the grippers 4 assume the support function and the support plates 24 move back into the entrance area of the drum, where they support incoming products. As soon as the main products are in the area of the grippers 4, the pressing lever 23 is released, then the gripper 4 closes and thus clamps the rear folding part (for example H.3 h ) of a main product together with the front folding part (for example H. 2 v ) of the subsequent product. The main products, which are no longer held in the conveyor carriage 22, are conveyed from the insertion drum into the insertion section in the form of an almost endless folding belt.

FIG. 3 shows the main products conveyed by the grippers 4 in the conveying direction F through a section of the insertion section. As already mentioned, the grippers 4 are controlled in such a way that the folded edges of the main products are moved between two grippers in front of the perpendicular. The section shows how a further insert product E.4 is inserted into the main products H, which already contain three insert products E.1 / 2/3. This is moved by any transport system (not shown in the figure) with the lower edge hanging freely from above into the region of the insertion section. The insertion product E.4 is guided by a guide element 31 between two grippers 4, advantageously in a position in which the lower edge of the product is ahead of its upper edge in the conveying direction. As soon as the lower edge of the insert product E.4 is sufficiently guided between the grippers 4, it can be released from the feed means and falls into the pocket formed by the main product H. If the main product is conveyed at least at the insertion point in such a way that the fold lies in the conveying direction in front of the center perpendicular between the two grippers, the products E.1 / 2/3 already inserted in the main product are in contact with the rear folding part H h and also with the leading lower edge inserted product E.4 will lay in front of the already inserted products in the conveying direction. With such a "slanted" hanging position of the main products, a defined position of the insert products and an always free insertion opening can be achieved for a further insertion process.

FIG. 4 shows a takeover U 'of main products H by a gripper 4 of an insertion section for a further method variant in the same representation as FIG. 2. It is again the takeover from an insertion drum, in which the main products are transferred in such a way that the in Direction of conveyance F leading folding part (e.g. H.4 v ) of each main product is recorded deeper, i.e. closer to the fold, than the folding part trailing in the conveying direction (e.g. H.5 h ). As already mentioned, this can be a convenient way of inserting, relative to the perpendicular Asymmetrical hanging position of the main products can be achieved between the two grippers in such a way that the fold of the main product lies in the conveying direction in front of this central perpendicular. Parts that have already been described in FIG. 2 with the same function are designated with the same reference numbers in this figure.

The main difference from the transfer shown in FIG. 2 is that the main products are not gripped by the grippers in the upper region of the insertion drum and pulled out of the cells of the drum, but in the sector of the drum in which the products move upwards and the cell dividing walls have an approximately horizontal position. In this area of the insertion drum, each product is still held in the cell by a press lever 23.

Four cells of the insertion drum are partially visible with main products H.4 to H.7 in FIG. They are separated from one another by cell partitions 21.5, 21.6, 21.7. The cell partitions are shown cut perpendicular to the drum axis. The main products H.4, H.5, H.6 and H.7 are also shown in section and in different takeover stages. The movement of the main products in the axial direction of the insertion drum and the opening of the main products is already completed in this area of the drum. Each main product is pressed by the pressing lever 23 in the area of its fold against the front cell partition (actually against the front part of the transport carriage 22). The front folding part in the conveying direction (for example H.4 v ) of each main product is held by a guide element, for example a guide rod 25, in such a way that it is essentially against the front cell partition. The rear folding part in the conveying direction (e.g. H.5 h ), on the other hand, depends on where it is held by the press lever 23 together with the front folding part, freely in the cell in which it is at the takeover point U 'by gravity against the other , rear cell partition is pressed. As a result, the front folding part lies essentially against the front cell dividing wall of the cell, while the rear part runs from the front to the rear cell dividing wall and therefore extends less far outwards on the cell wall. In this way, the two product edges, which are gripped by a gripper, are offset from each other, so that the gripper grips the front folding part (e.g. H.4 v ) of a main product closer to the fold than the rear folding part (e.g. H.5 h ) of the previous one Main product.

The grippers 4 have the same function as the grippers of FIG. 2. They are synchronized with the insertion drum in such a way that they move against the insertion drum in alignment with the cell dividing walls.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show an exemplary embodiment of a gripper with which the insertion method according to the invention can be carried out, as a view transversely to the conveying direction (FIG. 5) and as a view parallel to the conveying direction, from the rear (FIG. 6). The gripper is a further development of the gripper according to CH-A-644816, which is assumed to be known here. Of course, other grippers can also be used.

The gripper consists essentially of a quasi-stationary clamping tongue 41, which can be formed in one piece with a gripper housing 42, and a movable clamping tongue 43, which is formed in one piece with a spiral spring (not shown in the figures). The gripper has a shaft 44 connected to the tension member 3. The shaft 44 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 45 of the tension member and in the housing 42. The housing 42 is pivotable about the axis of the shaft 44 by means of a first control roller 46, which is rotatably arranged on a control shaft 46.1 fixedly attached to the housing 42 and can roll along the insertion path on control links 47.

A second control roller 48 is rotatably arranged on a connecting piece 49 which is fixedly connected to the shaft 44 and, when it rolls on a corresponding link 50, determines the rotational position of the shaft 44. The spiral spring formed on the movable clamping tongue 43 is fixedly connected to the shaft 44 , so that the rotational position of the shaft 44 and the pivoting position of the housing determine the position of the movable clamping tongue 43 and the tension of the coil spring.

The movable clamping tongue 43 is held in an open position (shown in broken lines) with respect to the stationary clamping tongue when the second control roller 48 runs on a corresponding link 50. If the second control roller 48 and with it the shaft 44 are rotated by a corresponding control link 50 in the direction of arrow C (with the pivot position of the housing 42 remaining the same), the movable clamping tongue 43 moves against the stationary clamping tongue 41, that is to say the gripper closes yourself. When the movable tongue touches the stationary one, the spring tightens.

The gripper has a latch that fixes the two tongues in this closed position. This consists, for example, of a locking tooth 51 fastened to the shaft 44 and a corresponding locking pawl 52 pivotably arranged on the housing. The locking pawl is pressed into its locking position by a spring (as shown) and opened by a control link 53. When the latch is engaged, the movable clamping tongue 43 is firmly connected to the stationary clamping tongue 41 and thus the pivotability of the housing 42 is blocked relative to the shaft 44.

Both in the open and in the closed state, the pivot position of the gripper can be changed by the first control roller 46 being pivoted by corresponding control links 47, both clamping tongues also being pivoted if the pivoting of the movable clamping tongue is not counteracted by corresponding links 50. FIG. 5 shows the gripper in a middle position in which a printed product is gripped essentially vertically, that is to say a folded printed product gripped symmetrically downwards by two adjacent grippers. A pivoting of the first control roller 46 and thus of the gripper in the direction of arrow B brings it into an insertion position, as shown in FIG. 3. A pivoting in the opposite direction creates a takeover position, as is advantageous in the takeover area (see FIGS. 2 and 4).

Support elements 54.1 and 54.2 can also be fixedly connected to the shaft 44 at a distance from the gripper. When the gripper closes (transfer), they move with the movable clamping tongue and guide the product edges to be gripped accordingly. On the insertion section, they are brought into an insertion position with the gripper in such a way that their lower part is moved ahead of the upper part. Support elements of this type are particularly advantageous if the main products to be conveyed are not very stiff and a support by the gripper in their central region is not sufficient for a correct insertion process.

The traction element 3 can be designed, for example, as a driven chain 54 in a channel 55. Since the space above the grippers 4 must be free for insertion, it is necessary to arrange the grippers 4 laterally from the pulling element 3. Depending on the weight of the products and the embodiment of the device, a pulling element can be arranged only on one side or a pulling element on both sides. The embodiment shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 shows a pulling element on one side and a support roller 57 rolling on a rail 56 on the other side.

FIGS. 7 and 8 show a further exemplary embodiment of a gripper (4 ') which is suitable for the method according to the invention, again as a view transverse to the conveying direction (FIG. 7) and as a view parallel to the conveying direction (FIG. 8). This is a further development of the gripper according to FIGS. 5 and 6. The gripper 4 'is arranged essentially below a corresponding pulling element 3', but the quasi-stationary clamping tongue 82 molded onto the gripper housing 81 is widened laterally in such a way that it grows extends laterally from the gripper housing 81 by at least the width of the main products H to be processed. The shaft 83 carrying the gripper also extends over the same width and two movable clamping tongues 84.1 and 84.2 are attached to it in the region of the widened, quasi-stationary clamping tongue 82. The function of the gripper 4 'is the same as that described for the gripper of FIGS. 5 and 6.

Above the shaft 83 projecting from the gripper housing 81 on one side, a plug-in template 85 is arranged in a roof-shaped manner, which moves with the gripper through the entire plug-in distance and serves as a guide for the products to be inserted.

FIG. 9 shows a further variant for the takeover of folded main products H by the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1. In this variant, not an insertion drum is used to feed and open the main products, but rather a feed transport means 90 which transports the main products hanging and gripped by the fold, an opening means 91 with which the freely hanging folding parts of the main products are separated, that is to say the Main products are opened, and an open keeping means 92, with which the main products are kept open. A staple conveyor can also be used as the feed transport means, which takes over the main products, for example at a transfer point from a stream of shed or from a collecting drum. Opening means and keeping open means are known per se, for example from EP-A-0 522 319 and EP-A-0 564 812.

If, as shown in FIG. 9, guide means 93 inserted laterally into the products opened by the opening means 91, which likewise move in the conveying direction F, are used to keep the main products open, the main products can also be opened asymmetrically. This is realized by the guide means 93 being introduced into the only slightly opened main product substantially vertically under the fold held tight by the feed transport means 90 and then moving somewhat slower than the feed transport means 90 in the conveying direction. As a result, the folding part H v leading in the conveying direction remains essentially vertically hanging, while the folding part H h rear in the conveying direction is deflected to the rear. If the rear folding part is deflected to the rear so strongly that its edge facing away from the fold approaches the front folding part of the subsequent product, the two folding parts can be gripped by a gripper of the insertion section. The insertion pockets formed by main products gripped in this way, like those according to FIG. 4, have a fold leading in the conveying direction, because the front fold part H v is gripped closer to the fold than the rear fold part H h .

Der Einsteckvorgang läuft wie bereits beschrieben ab.The main products gripped by the grippers 4 of the insertion section 1 by the feed transport means are deflected 94 into the for the Insert the required position with the fold hanging down. The insertion process proceeds as already described.
