Description

The present invention relates to electrical connectors comprising several contact elements and intended to be coupled to a complementary connector. It relates more particularly to electrical connectors of the type defined by the preamble of claim 1, which are commonly used at present.

There is also known (FR-A-2 265 193) a complex connector, having an insulating body before pierced with passages for receiving contacts and for supporting a flange of these contacts, an insulating plate being applied against the body and provided with locking fingers and means intended to keep the plate in abutment against the front insulating body.

The invention aims in particular to provide a connector whose disassembly and assembly are easy, however remaining simple in constitution.

To this end, the invention provides a connector defined above, in accordance with the characterizing part of claim 1. Secondary characters are set out in the dependent claims.

This arrangement allows all the contacts to be removed without separating the plate.

  • la figure 1 montre schématiquement, en coupe suivant un plan passant par l'axe, deux connecteurs destinés à coopérer, l'un des connecteurs étant représenté pour moitié en position accouplée, pour moitié en position désaccouplée ;
  • la figure 2 montre le double accrochage des connecteurs de la figure 1, en coupe suivant un plan passant par l'axe, différent de celui de la figure 1 ;
The invention will be better understood on reading the following description of a particular embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example. The description refers to the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • Figure 1 shows schematically, in section along a plane passing through the axis, two connectors intended to cooperate, one of the connectors being shown half in the coupled position, half in the uncoupled position;
  • Figure 2 shows the double hooking of the connectors of Figure 1, in section along a plane passing through the axis, different from that of Figure 1;
  • Figure 3 is a sectional view along line III-III of Figure 2.

The cooperating connectors shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 can be used in particular in automobile construction where a double attachment security is recommended. One constitutes a plug 10 and the other a base 10a. Each has several contact elements, which are shown as sockets 12 on the plug connector, pins 12a on the base connector.

The plug 10 comprises a front insulating body 18 pierced with parallel passages for receiving the contacts 12. Each passage has a shoulder 20 directed towards the rear, intended to serve as a stop for a corresponding flange 22 provided on the contact and therefore to fix the position of the latter. The rear part of the insulating body constitutes a tubular skirt intended to receive a contact retention plate 24. This plate has a set of flexible locking fingers 25 directed forward for each passage. In the embodiment shown, the fingers 25 have at rest a shape such that they delimit a passage of dimension smaller than the cross section of a flange 22 of the contact elements, intended to come into abutment against the shoulder 20. They must therefore move apart to allow the insertion or extraction of the contacts. This spacing is prohibited, when the plug is assembled, by the wall of a recess 48 provided in the front insulating body 18. In an advantageous embodiment, the fingers have a terminal thickening so as to slide on the barrel of the elements of contact and to undergo no deformation and no permanent bending stress.

In the embodiment shown by way of example, the means for fixing the plate 24 to the insulating body 18 comprise tabs 26 directed towards the rear, two in number for example, terminated by fork-shaped hooks , coming to engage in terminal circumferential notches of the skirt of the front insulating body. The tabs 26 keep the contacts 12, the plate 24 and the front insulating body 18 assembled, while allowing disassembly.

It is often necessary that the plate 24 can only be inserted into the insulating body 18 in one orientation. For this, indexing means can be provided. Figures 2 and 3 show means of indexing each connector which have longitudinal grooves 50 formed in the front insulating body and keys of corresponding shape 52 provided on the wafer.

To avoid total escape of the wafer when the tabs 26 are off, flanges 54 may be provided at the ends of the grooves 50. The backward movement of the wafer is then limited by the abutment of the rear edge of the keys 52 The elasticity of the parts, however, allows them to be separated if necessary.

An intermediate connector 32, which can be made of several assembled parts, is fixed on the insulating body in a removable manner and constitutes a transition with the connector. of cable. It can also supplement the retention of the wafer. It has a front part intended to slide on the rear of the front insulating body 18 and a rear part which comes to rest against the end fork of the legs 26. An O-ring 56 can be provided between the intermediate connector 32 and the insulating body 18 for sealing.

The means for fixing the intermediate connector comprise elastic hooking lugs 60 extending the connector 32 forwards, snapping into circumferential recesses of the insulating body 18, behind a flange 66. Bosses can be provided in the recesses 62 to authorize the fitting of the intermediate connector 32 in only one orientation, when necessary. The bosses then also prevent rotation of the intermediate fitting. These bosses can in particular be provided to be inserted each between two elastic tabs 60.

The connectors 10 and 10a are provided with complementary fixing means. In the case of the plug 10, these means comprise a locking ring 16 intended to be screwed onto an external thread of the front insulating body 18a of the base 10a. The locking ring 16 can be provided, at the front, with locking slots cooperating with pins provided on the insulating body 18a, in accordance with the arrangement described in document FR-A-2 632 783 to which reference may be made.

The locking ring 16 is extended at the rear, in the particular embodiment given by way of example, by elastic tabs 64 which can have several functions and in particular that of retaining the ring in translation on the intermediate connector 32 in the case shown, directly on the insulating body in other cases. These tabs 64 have a step facing back and which, when the ring is in place, is in look of a circumferential latching notch 70 provided on the intermediate connector 32. The recoil of the ring is thus avoided. Forward, the ring is in support, when it is in place, against the flange 66 which allows it to rotate.

The assembly of the connector 10 which has just been described can be carried out as follows.

The locking ring 16 is slid over the cable (not shown) which can already be provided with its terminal contacts. The intermediate connector 32 is placed on the cable. The plate is inserted into the front insulating body, but left in the maximum withdrawal position defined by the support against the flanges 54. The contacts can then be mounted through the plate 24, from the rear. They snap past the elastic fingers 25. Once the contacts in place, the plate 24 is pushed forward until the elastic locking tabs 26 come to catch in the slots at the rear of the insulating body.

Once the plate is snapped into the body, the intermediate connector 32 is engaged on the insulating body, by simple pressure. The legs 60 move apart until they reach the recesses.

The locking ring 16 can then be advanced until it comes to bear against the flange 66, in front of the recesses 62. At this time, the elastic tabs 64 have exceeded the notch 70.

Disassembly is carried out by reverse operations.

To disassemble the locking ring 16, the elastic tabs 64 are spread apart using a tool and the ring 16 is pulled back. The intermediate connection 32 must first be released from the means which hold it, which may be constituted by a threaded connection sleeve, screwed onto the threaded rear part of the intermediate connection 32. Then the intermediate connection 32 can be pulled towards the rear to release its elastic legs 60.

It then becomes possible to dismantle the contacts. Pinch the elastic tabs 26 to disengage them from the hooking slots, for example using a screwdriver, then pull the plate backwards until it comes into abutment against the flange 54. Each contact can then be removed by pulling on its cable: the elastic fingers 25 open under pressure.

The intermediate connector can be completed by an internal neck 68 bearing on a grommet (not shown) interposed between it and the plate 24. This neck can also, or only, be provided to prevent the dropout of the tabs 26.

The base 10a constituting the complementary connector can have a constitution similar to that of the plug 10. FIG. 3 shows the indexing keys of its plate 24a in the insulating body 10a which also constitutes the boot housing provided with the thread for receiving the ring 16. We see that the keys have two different widths to ensure angular polarization.

The parts other than the insulating bodies and the retaining plates can be made of any suitable material, and in particular of loaded plastic.
