Description
The present invention relates to a profiled elastomeric seal intended to be placed in a peripheral groove of a tunnel segment, with a flat bottom and inclined edges, and having a face which must be housed in the bottom of the groove provided with several grooves extending parallel in the longitudinal direction, framed by support legs, and a substantially planar opposite face.
Such seals, described in document EP-A-0222968, do not provide a perfect seal when the liquid, generally water, against which it is desired to seal, and under high pressure, such as this is the case for tunnels at great depth or under rivers or inlets.
The document EP-A-0147764 describes a seal with lateral flanks perpendicular to the planes of the surfaces between which the seal is to be provided, not resting on inclined edges of a groove, and composed of a material water-swelling between two ribbons of non-water-swelling material.
The object of the present invention is to provide a seal for a tunnel segment which has a better seal than known seals in the presence of high liquid pressure.
The seal according to the invention is characterized in that its leg located on the side where the pressure of the liquid is exerted against which it is desired to seal, or its two lateral legs, have a bearing lip on the corresponding inclined edge of the segment groove.
- It has on its face opposite to that which is to be housed in the bottom of the throat a layer of hydrogongulating elastomer.
- The thickness of the layer of hydro-swelling elastomer is 2 to 3 mm.
- It is provided with longitudinal cells in the shape of an arch above the legs of its central zone, and in the shape of a crescent moon turned towards its axis above the side legs.
- The free volume occupied by its grooves, and possibly its alveoli, is equal to the volume of elastomer located at rest above the throat, increased by approximately 10%.
It is described below, by way of examples and with reference to the figures of the appended drawing, of the joints of segments tunnel according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows in section two seals arranged opposite one another in opposite facing grooves, each provided with a sealing lip and a layer of water-swelling rubber.
Figure 2 shows two seals arranged face to face, each provided with a sealing lip and longitudinal cells in the shape of an arch and crescent moon.
In FIG. 1, each of the segments (1, 2) facing one another has a groove in which is placed a seal (3, 4). The seals each have a flat face, these square faces pressing against each other along the
To further improve the seal, the area of the two seals near their flat face is made of a water-swelling elastomer, preferably with a thickness of 2 to 3mm. It is known that such elastomers can undergo volume increases of 100% in contact with water.
When the segments are tightened one on the other as represented by the two vertical arrows, the joints are crushed and come to occupy the volume of the grooves, until the two segments come into contact with one of the other.
The seals shown in FIG. 2 allow a greater crushing stroke of the seals for an identical force exerted by the segments. Each joint is drilled above of its central legs (12, 14 or 13, 15) of longitudinal arch-
The free volume corresponding to the grooves, and optionally to the cells, is preferably chosen to be approximately 10% greater than the volume occupied by a seal at rest above the groove, so as not to subject the seal during its crushing to excessive stresses likely to degrade it.
