- the shape of the aperture is also particularly effective in resisting the rotation of a lock of complementary shape mounted in the aperture. If an attempt it made to rotate the lock, the shape of the aperture is such that the initial movement of the lock will cause the lock and aperture to engage along common edges, and the forces tending to deform the aperture will be dissipated over a relatively large area. A very large force must therefore be applied to the lock before the aperture is deformed.

- Fifth and sixth sides 15,16 of the aperture also extend along straight lines and connect the first side 11 with the third and fourth sides respectively.
- Seventh and eighth sides 17, 18 of the aperture 2 connect the second side 12 with the third and fourth sides respectively and are each composed of a curved section 17a, 18a and a straight section 17b, 18b extending along tangents from the curved sections.
- any attempt to twist the lock will first cause the lock to roll around one or other of the curved sections 17a, 18a bringing the straight edges of the lock into contact with the corresponding edges 13,14,15 and/or 16 of the aperture.
- the torque applied to the lock will therefore be transmitted to the panel 1 along these edges.
- the torque that must be applied to the lock before the aperture deforms sufficiently to allow the lock to rotate freely is very much larger than that required where the lock makes point-contact with the aperture on rotation. Nevertheless, the aperture contains no inwardly-directed corners of the kind that cause rapid wear in stamping tools.
