Definitions
- the invention relates to a cooling device in a motor vehicle for liquid cooling of its internal combustion engine with features according to the preamble of claim 1.
- the invention is based on a prior art according to DE-A 14 26 185, in which a large-volume calming space is provided as part of the cooling device for a motor vehicle engine in the form of a container.
- This forms an additional volume and is connected via a riser pipe with a relatively large diameter to a ventilation line which is laid between the inlet-side water tank of the cooler and the expansion tank.
- Said riser pipe starts at a point near the entry point of the container.
- an overflow transverse wall is provided in the middle of the container from the bottom of the container, which rises vertically and extends approximately to the middle height, and which is intended to promote the separation of air inclusions carried in the suction line to the riser pipe.
- This type of design and volume dimensioning of the bubble separator according to the invention make it possible to achieve a noticeable reduction in the cooling water flow rate.
- the air bubbles to be separated are practically forced up on the inclined wall of the bubble separator and introduced directly into the riser pipe. This enables a very high degree of separation to be achieved; the water pump only sucks in air-free cooling water as far as possible, which means that cavitation damage with the resultant partial destruction of engine components or the total failure of the engine can be effectively avoided.
- the fact that the coolant flowing through the heating circuit is also included in this bubble separation not only ensures that the entire cooling system quickly becomes bubble-free, but also effectively prevents cooling water that is too strongly mixed with air bubbles from being used in the heating circuit could reduce the heating effect.
- a cooling water expansion tank 6 is arranged above the cooler 3.
- a line 7 with the check valve 15 connected connects the cooling water expansion tank 6 to the upper water tank of the cooler 3, while a line 8 connects the cooling water expansion tank 6 to the line 4 which extends between the lower water tank of the cooler 3 and the water pump 12.
- a line 9 branches off from the engine 1, which leads to a heat exchanger 10 and, like the latter and a line 11 extending from it, is part of a heating circuit.
- a bubble separator 13 is installed in the line 4 shortly before the water pump 12 connected to the motor 1.
- the heating circuit 9, 10, 11 opens with its line 11 in flow upstream of the bubble separator 13 into line 4.
- a riser pipe is designated, in which a check valve 15 is also installed and which is connected on the one hand to the expansion tank 6 and on the other hand to the bubble separator 13.
- the bubble separator 13 as can be seen from the drawing, is designed as a funnel-shaped extension of the riser pipe 14, arranged at its lower end and connected to the line 4 with its expanded funnel entry base 17.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a cooling device in a motor vehicle for liquid cooling of its internal combustion engine with features according to the preamble of claim 1.
The invention is based on a prior art according to DE-A 14 26 185, in which a large-volume calming space is provided as part of the cooling device for a motor vehicle engine in the form of a container. This forms an additional volume and is connected via a riser pipe with a relatively large diameter to a ventilation line which is laid between the inlet-side water tank of the cooler and the expansion tank. Said riser pipe starts at a point near the entry point of the container. In addition, an overflow transverse wall is provided in the middle of the container from the bottom of the container, which rises vertically and extends approximately to the middle height, and which is intended to promote the separation of air inclusions carried in the suction line to the riser pipe. The supply of the air bubbles to the riser pipe is therefore not achieved in this case by the design of the container as such, but by special installations in the container. Since nothing else is stated in the description of the concrete shape of this container, only the shape shown in the drawing can be assumed, that is that of a cuboid hollow body with flat walls and a flat floor and a parallel ceiling. With this known container, a calming of the coolant therefore hardly seems achievable due to the built-in transverse wall, because the coolant is swirled rather than calmed down when it flows over the transverse wall. It may well be that the coolant is calmed somewhat at the beginning of the container. In this area, however, there are no aids that could favor the separation of the trapped air towards the riser pipe. In any case, the transverse wall negates the effect, because the subsequent swirling of the coolant is more conducive to the formation of bubbles, which must be avoided precisely because of the dangers to the water pump and the pipeline.
It is therefore an object of the invention to design the cooling device of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that a sufficiently good calming of the cooling water flow with the best possible permanent elimination of air bubbles from the latter and permanent rapid removal of the separated air from the separation zone can be achieved.
This object is achieved in a cooling device with the generic features according to the invention by designing and expanding the same by the features specified in the characterizing part of claim 1.
This type of design and volume dimensioning of the bubble separator according to the invention make it possible to achieve a noticeable reduction in the cooling water flow rate. In addition, the air bubbles to be separated are practically forced up on the inclined wall of the bubble separator and introduced directly into the riser pipe. This enables a very high degree of separation to be achieved; the water pump only sucks in air-free cooling water as far as possible, which means that cavitation damage with the resultant partial destruction of engine components or the total failure of the engine can be effectively avoided. The fact that the coolant flowing through the heating circuit is also included in this bubble separation not only ensures that the entire cooling system quickly becomes bubble-free, but also effectively prevents cooling water that is too strongly mixed with air bubbles from being used in the heating circuit Could reduce the heating effect.
