Definitions
- the invention relates to a machine for milling and polishing an edge of a piece of hard material, in particular a granite or marble stele, the outline of which can be relatively complex; the invention aims more particularly to reduce the machining time, in particular by facilitating tool changes between the different passes necessary to obtain the desired surface condition.
- the object of the invention is to propose an apparatus for surfacing these edges, which is of simple design (and in particular very easily adaptable to any contour of stele), while being sufficiently developed to allow to reduce as much as possible the adaptations and handling between the different surfacing passes.
- the invention therefore relates to a machine for milling and polishing an edge of a piece of hard material with predetermined outline, such as for example a granite or marble stele, characterized in that it comprises a support of said part provided with means for blocking the latter and a grinding unit subject to move as a whole along first guide means arranged in the vicinity of said support and in that said grinding unit comprises a pivoting turret provided with several grinding tools of different roughness, to present the different tools in a predetermined order of decreasing roughness in contact with the edge of said part.
- the polishing machine shown comprises a support 11 for a stele 12 and a grinding unit î3 subject to move as a whole along the first guide means 14a, 14b, here in the form of two rectilinear rails extending in the vicinity of the support 11.
- the grinding unit comprises a base 15 mounted on rollers 16a, 16b rolling respectively on the rails 14a, 14b.
- This base driven by an electric motor (not shown) carries the whole of the grinding unit and performs back-and-forth movements opposite the support 11.
- the base carries a main carriage 18 mounted movable along second guide means 19 integral with the base 15 and arranged substantially transversely to the first guide means 14a, 14b.
- the grinding unit further comprises a secondary carriage 25 carrying grinding tools and an electric drive motor 27 of one of these tools in the position of use.
- the secondary carriage is mounted mobile along third guide means 28, integral with the main carriage 18 and arranged parallel to the second guide means 19.
- Means for moving the secondary carriage preferably jacks, are provided to compensate for wear of the grinding tool in use.
- These displacement means are active over a relatively short stroke and cooperate with a limit switch 22, the role of which will be explained below. They are integrated into a conventional servo chain urging the secondary carriage 25 towards the edge 30 of the stele 12. This servo chain can be of the type acting on the means of movement of the carriage 25 to maintain the grinding force in predetermined limits.
- the grinding unit and more particularly the carriage 25, carries a pivoting turret 32 provided with several grinding tools 33, 34, 35 ... of different roughness, to present the different tools in a predetermined order of decreasing roughness, in contact with the edge 30 of the stele 12 during successive passes.
- the turret 32 is cantilevered at one end of the carriage 25. it is actuated by a motor 38 integral with the carriage 25.
- the shaft of this motor carries a pinion 39, which is engaged with a toothed crown 40 secured to the turret.
- the latter which thus pivots about a horizontal axis, is lockable in a number of predetermined angular positions, corresponding to the working positions of the various tools. Changes of tool in the machine, between the different finishing passes, thus require a minimum of time.
- the support 11 comprises a receiving plate 41 for supporting the part 12.
- This receiving plate consists of a cylindrical external part 42, hollow, housing a ball plate 43, vertically movable under the action of a jack 44 supporting said ball plate.
- This conventional arrangement allows easy positioning of the part to be polished on edge, when the ball plate is in the high position, slightly above the upper edge of the cylindrical part 42. Then, the ball plate is lowered and the part ( here, the stele 12) rests on said cylindrical part 42.
- a jack 45 secured to an upper support 46 is provided with a support pad 47, which comes into contact with the upper surface of the part 12 to confirm the fixing of this part on the support 11.
- the lower part of the cylindrical part 42 is arranged in double ball bearing 50, so that it can rotate relative to a vertical axis, inside a fixed frame 51.
- An electric motor 52 provided at the end of the shaft with a pinion 53 in engagement with a ring gear 54 linked to said cylindrical part 42, allows the orientation of the receiving plate 41 relative to the grinding unit.
- a template 55 mounted on a shoulder of the receiving plate 41 extends parallel to the stele 12 to be polished.
- the perimeter of this template reproduces the desired outline of the stele and the probe 21 is in contact with said perimeter ( Figure 1).
- Said probe protrudes relative to the carriage 18; an electric motor 20 is mechanically coupled to the roller support arm of this probe to vary the position of said roller relative to the carriage 18.
- the means for moving the carriage 18 are controlled to keep the probe 21 in contact with the template 55 with a predetermined force during movement of the grinding unit along the first guide means 14a, 14b above.
- the servo system is classic. It may simply be a system for regulating the pressure in the actuating cylinder of the carriage 18.
- the force developed on the template 55 is greater than the force urging the secondary carriage 25 in the direction of the edge 30.
- the limit switch 22 associated with the means for moving the secondary carriage 25 is connected to control the actuation of the motor 20.
- the latter controls the withdrawal of the probe 21 from a predetermined distance each time it is operated.
- the motor 20 can for example be a stepping motor.
- the grinding unit 13 and more particularly the main carriage 18, carries two sensors 56a, 56b (for example miniature contactors) placed on either side of the location of the grinding wheel in use (grinding wheel 35, in the drawings) to cooperate with the edge 30 of the stele and to be actuated by it as a function of the curvature of said edge and of the progression of the grinding unit 13 along the first guide means 14a, 14b.
- the sensors 56 are, in this case, mounted on a retractable support (not shown) so as not to impede the rotation of the turret 32 when replacing one grinding tool with another.
- each sensor 56a. 56b controls the rotation of the motor 52 in one direction or the other, respectively, when it is actuated.
- the more pronounced curvature C of the edge 30 to be polished will cause actuation of the sensor 56b, since the grinding tool is kept in permanent contact with the edge 30.
- the arrangement of sensors 56a, 56b can also be mounted at the template 55 on either side of the axis of the grinding tool in use, that is to say structurally , on either side of the probe 21 to cooperate with the edge of the template and fulfill the same control function of the motor 52.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a machine for milling and polishing an edge of a piece of hard material, in particular a granite or marble stele, the outline of which can be relatively complex; the invention aims more particularly to reduce the machining time, in particular by facilitating tool changes between the different passes necessary to obtain the desired surface condition.
In the development of hard stone stelae, the surfacing of the edges poses a particular problem because said stelae differ essentially in their contours, which can be relatively complex. The object of the invention is to propose an apparatus for surfacing these edges, which is of simple design (and in particular very easily adaptable to any contour of stele), while being sufficiently developed to allow to reduce as much as possible the adaptations and handling between the different surfacing passes.
In this spirit, the invention therefore relates to a machine for milling and polishing an edge of a piece of hard material with predetermined outline, such as for example a granite or marble stele, characterized in that it comprises a support of said part provided with means for blocking the latter and a grinding unit subject to move as a whole along first guide means arranged in the vicinity of said support and in that said grinding unit comprises a pivoting turret provided with several grinding tools of different roughness, to present the different tools in a predetermined order of decreasing roughness in contact with the edge of said part.

- - Figure 2 is a top view of the same machine, partially broken away at the pivoting turret of the grinding unit; and
- - Figure 3 is a detail view in section and in elevation showing the structure of the workpiece support.
Referring to the drawings, it can be seen that the polishing machine shown comprises a
According to an important characteristic of the invention, the grinding unit, and more particularly the
L'effort développé sur le gabarit 55 est supérieur à l'effort sollicitant le chariot secondaire 25 en direction du chant 30.Referring more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 3, it can be seen that the
Indeed, the
According to another feature of the invention, the
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment of the machine which has just been described, but includes all the technical equivalents of the means involved, if these are in the context of the claims which follow .
