Definitions
- the invention relates to a so-called «string chorus circuit for an electronic musical instrument.
- Phase modulation devices based on the principle of modulated delay time using a larger number of reactance elements with controllable amplifier stages or phase shifts, which are changed in the individual elements at low frequencies, have long been known; see. e.g. B. DE-AS 19 25 946, the type of vibrato effect implemented there is already described applied in several channels in different ways.
- the MOS Delay Line ... its mode of operation and its application for creating special effects in electronic organs
- company publication “Information 023 by ITT Freiburg, and in the article” Delay of LF Signals with MOS Bucket Chains " by J. Hollmann and R.-D.
- bucket chains can advantageously be used, in which the delay caused by These bucket chains are known to be shift registers for analog signals with charge transfer elements alternately arranged in pairs in a chain-like manner and reloadable by means of a clock oscillator, the frequency of the clock oscillators being modulated more or less periodically by low-frequency signals, which is already inherent in television technology has long been known and there for the line distortion of the B has been used.
- the aim of the latter device is to imitate the so-called “choral effect”, which occurs particularly in the case of conventional string sounds, as closely as possible in the case of electronically generated music sounds.
- the result of the device according to DE-AS 23 09 321 is still not entirely satisfactory because the rigid phase relationship between the individual components of the low-frequency modulation signal causes a more or less rigid modulation effect instead of the more aleatory one with the conventional string sounds.
- the running times of the individual channels themselves should be chosen differently by different clock frequencies, because different modulation effects then also occur.
- a circuit which has the features mentioned in the preamble of claim 1 is known from DE-A-2 337 041.
- separate phase shifters are provided for each subaudiogenerator, which on the one hand increases the effort, and on the other hand still results in a certain regularity of the modulation and thus a somewhat rigid sound pattern, in particular also because the two subaudio frequencies are in a harmonious relationship to one another there.
- the present invention is based on the object, with the aid of a circuit arrangement according to the preamble of claim 1, to further develop the “string chorus effect” or to bring it even closer to the conventional ideal, ie. H. to be improved in such a way that the periodic proportions are even more suppressed and replaced by an accumulation of irregular combinations of modulation effects - naturally and understandably without or at least without any significant additional technical outlay.
- the non-sinusoidal total subaudio signal is fed to the modulation inputs of the clock oscillators by means of the converter with different phase positions, the phase shift being effected by frequency-selective networks and thus itself being frequency-dependent, so that the individual components of the subaudio signal modulate the clock oscillators in different and temporally variable phase positions.
- the non-sinusoidal subaudio signal is stored as a sum of at least two different-frequency components in digital sound synthesis technology in a waveform memory with low-frequency counter addressing of the memory locations with amplitude values, whose read inputs are supplied with phase-shifted and / or frequency-different signal voltages of subaudio frequency.
- the oscillator 1 shows the two low-frequency oscillators 1, 2, one of which is tuned to the lower and the other to the higher of the two subaudio frequencies of the components of the subaudio signal.
- the oscillator 1 comprises a commercially available circuit «LM 566 with an external circuit through fixed resistor 3 and setting resistor 4, capacitor 5, positive and negative pole 6 and 7 of the current source, and a voltage divider tap 8 thereof.
- the solid-state circuits LM 566 are in themselves intended and suitable for the construction of oscillators, the frequency of which can be influenced or changed by DC voltage changes. However, this function is not used in the present case, but only serves to describe the oscillator 1, 2.
- the outputs 10, 11 are. Via decoupling resistors 12, 13 connected to a common load resistor 14 and the common voltage node serves as a source for the complex, i.e. H. Non-sinusoidal sub-audio frequency signal, which is located at the input of the converter module, which has three output terminals 16, 17, 18 for different derived partial signals.
- H. Non-sinusoidal sub-audio frequency signal which is located at the input of the converter module, which has three output terminals 16, 17, 18 for different derived partial signals.
- the inverting input 22 of the operational amplifier 23 is first connected to the input terminal 19 via a functionally unimportant block capacitor 20 and a decoupling resistor 21, which, in a manner known per se, for gain adjustment by means of an ohmic resistor 24 and for stabilizing against undesired self-excitation by the capacitor 25 is fed back from the output 26 to the inverting input 22.
- another operational amplifier 27 is connected in basically the same circuit, only with the difference that the signal at the output 26 with the decoupling resistor 28 to the inverting input 29 as well as via an RC high-pass element 29 ' a time constant is approximately equal to the reciprocal of the frequency of the higher frequencies of the two components of the sub audio signal on the non-inverting input;
- the circuitry of the operational amplifier 27 is implemented in the same way as for the operational amplifier 23.
- the two inputs of the operational amplifier 32 are connected to the output 31 of the operational amplifier 32 with the output 33 in a practically identical manner as the former. Certain differences are provided in the dimensioning of the RC high-pass elements 29 'and 34 (in the case of the operational amplifier 32) through the choice of the resistors R x .
- the signals on the outputs 26, 31 and 33 act on the inverting inputs 35, 36 and 37 of the operational amplifiers 38, 39 and 40, the outputs of which are the already mentioned outputs 16, 17 and 18 of the converter 15.
- the operational amplifiers 38, 39, 40 are coupled with essentially the same parallel RC elements 41, 42, 43 from a time constant which is at least approximately equal to the reciprocal of the frequency of the lower-frequency component of the sub-audio frequency signal at the input terminal 19.
- the non-inverting inputs, e.g. B. 44, 45 and the base of the resistors of the high-pass RC elements 29, 34 are connected via line 46 to an operating voltage filter circuit 47 and supplied with this with operating DC voltage.
- Both the high-pass RC elements 29, 34 and the parallel RC negative-feedback elements 41, 42, 43 with a low-pass effect bring about the effect that the lower-frequency component of the sub-audio frequency signal at the input 19 at the output terminals 16, 17 and 18 appear out of phase by 0 °, 120 ° or 240 °, while the phase angles of the higher-frequency component or components appear from 0 ° between 90 ° and 120 °, more precisely by a little more than 90 ° or between 180 ° and 240 ° (plus an integer multiple of 90 °).
- These phase shifts of the components in the signals at the outputs 16, 17 and 18, which are not the same in pairs per channel result in much more complicated modulation overlaps than in the case of a modulation with two components, the phase relationships of which are rigidly repeated periodically.
- Fig. 2 are at an output of the audio frequency generator 51 via the three lines 52, 53, 54, the delay time devices 55, 56, 57 according to the preamble of claim 1, the shift register by the clock signals the clock oscillator 58, 59, 60 can be controlled in accordance with the output signals of the voltage-dependent, ie frequency-modulated subaudio oscillators 61, 62, 63 (eg 30 kHz, 55 kHz, 80 kHz).
- the voltage-dependent, ie frequency-modulated subaudio oscillators 61, 62, 63 eg 30 kHz, 55 kHz, 80 kHz.
- the output signals of the delay time devices 55, 56, 57 are sent to the inputs 68, via mixer 64 with sound coloring means, level adjustment, etc., together with the output signal of a further similar unit 67 connected via the direct line 65 to a further output 66 of the audio frequency generator 51, 69 of a further mixer 70 and coupled by this to the input 71, a power amplifier 72, the output signal of which acts on the playback device 73.
- the sub-audio frequency oscillators 61, 62, 63 are frequency-modulated by the signals occurring on the three outputs 16, 17, 18 of the string chorus circuit provided according to the invention with the converter 15, at the input of which the output 19 of the generator 1 + 2 for a non-sinusoidal subaudio signal with at least two sinusoidal, preferably non-harmonic, components is connected.
