- ALLGEMEINER STAND DER TECHNIK
- Diese Erfindung betrifft drahtlose Datenkommunikationsnetzwerke und insbesondere Anordnungen zur Kommunikation zwischen mobilen Datenverarbeitungseinheiten und einem Zentralcomputer unter Verwendung derartiger Netzwerke.
- Die Anmelderin der vorliegenden Erfindung liefert ein drahtloses Datenkommunikationssystem, welches als Spektrum 24® System bekannt ist und welches das Kommunikationsprotokoll der IEEE-Norm 802.11 befolgt. Bei dem implementierten System stehen Mobileinheiten durch Zugangspunkte in Datenkommunikation mit einem Zentralcomputer. Die Zugangspunkte kommunizieren mit dem Computer über ein drahtgebundenes Ethernet-Netzwerk. Jede der Mobileinheiten ordnet sich selbst einem der Zugangspunkte zu. Um Ordnung zu halten und die Funkkommunikation zu reduzieren, muss jeder Zugangspunkt bestimmen, welche der Kommunikationen, welche über die Ethernet-Verbindung von dem Zentralcomputer empfangen wurden, für eine Mobileinheit bestimmt ist, welche diesem bestimmten Zugangspunkt zugeordnet ist. Diese Anforderung steigert die Rechenbelastung des Zugangspunkts deutlich, wobei seine Kosten erhöht werden.
- Zusätzlich werden bei Anwendungen, welche ein hohes Datenkommunikationsvolumen von mehreren Benutzern unterstützen müssen, wie beispielsweise Systeme, welche ein Selbstbedienungseinkaufssystem unterstützen, Krankenhaussysteme, Systeme, welche Funkruf- oder Sprachdaten-Verbindungen zu vielen Benutzern aufweisen, oder Systeme, welche eine Kommunikation mit elektronischen Regaletiketten unterstützen, zusätzliche Zugangspunkte erforderlich, um den Datenkommunikationsverkehr zu unterstützen, wobei die Gesamtsystemkosten erhöht werden.
- Die Kosten eines betriebsbereiten Zugangspunkts sind nicht nur von seiner Komplexität und der Anforderung einer Hochgeschwindigkeitsverarbeitung von Datenpaketen zur Auswahl derjenigen, die für Mobileinheiten bestimmt sind, welche einem Zugangspunkt zugeordnet sind, sondern auch von den zusätzlichen Kosten der Installation der elektrischen Energieversorgung an den Ort des Zugangspunkts und den Kosten einer Stromversorgung abhängig, um elektrischen Wechselstrom in Gleichstrom für die Schaltkreise des Zugangspunkts umzuwandeln. Weitere Kosten können bei der physischen Befestigung der Zugangspunkt-Hardware und der Antenne entstehen.

US 5,461,627 A wurde als eine Basis für den Oberbegriff des Anspruchs 1 verwendet und offenbart ein Zugangsprotokoll und -verfahren für ein drahtloses Vollduplexnetzwerk, welches die Funktionen behandelt, welche bei großangelegten drahtlosen lokalen oder Gebäudenetzwerken benötigt werden, bei welchen die Benutzerstationen, feste oder bewegliche batteriebetriebene, tragbare Computer und Telefone, sind oder aufweisen können. Die bereitgestellte Funktion ist eine Einrichtung und eine schnelle Übermittlung von Datenpaketen oder von virtuellen Verbindungen durch eine Übertragung segmentierter Pakete. Es wird angenommen, dass Funkfrequenzen im Mikrowellenbereich der primäre Übertragungsmodus ist, eine optische Ausbreitung ist jedoch auch ein nutzbares Medium. - Weiterhin wird auf RYPINSKI C A: „Motivation for centralized wireless LAN functions" PERSONAL, INDOOR AND MOBILE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS, 1992, PROCEEDINGS, PIMRC '92., THIRD IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON BOSTON, MA, USA 19. bis 21. US 5,504,746 A hingewiesen. - Es ist deshalb eine Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung, ein verbessertes drahtloses Datenkommunikationsnetzwerk mit preiswerten Zugangspunkten bereitzustellen, um die wirtschaftliche Bereitstellung einer zuverlässigen drahtlosen Datenkommunikation mit erhöhter Kapazität und in komplexen Installationen zu angemessenen Kosten zu ermöglichen.
- KURZFASSUNG DER ERFINDUNG
- Gemäß der Erfindung wird ein drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem gemäß Anspruch 1 bereitgestellt. Bevorzugte Ausführungsformen der vorliegenden Erfindung mögen aus den abhängigen Ansprüchen abgeleitet werden.

- Unter Bezugnahme auf
1 wird ein drahtloses Datenkommunikationssystem gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung zum Bereitstellen von Datenkommunikation zwischen einem Zentralcomputer10 und mehreren Mobileinheiten12 dargestellt. Das System verwendet Zugangspunkte14 , um eine Funkdatenpaketkommunikation mit den Mobileinheiten12 unter Verwendung des Frequenzsprung-SS-Modulations-Kommunikationsprotokolls (frequency hop spread spectrum communications protocol) der IEEE-Norm 802.11 bereitzustellen, wobei die Funkmodule in den Mobileinheiten12 Abfragesignale von den Zugangspunkten14 überwachen und sich einem Zugangspunkt zum Zwecke der Datenkommunikation zuordnen. Die Funkmodule der Mobileinheiten und Zugangspunkte mögen beispielsweise mit denjenigen identisch sein, welche bei dem Spektrum 24® System verwendet werden. - Bei Systemen nach dem Stand der Technik ist jeder Zugangspunkt eines drahtgebundenen Ethernet-Netzwerkes mit dem Zentralcomputer verbunden. Die Zugangspunkte sind erforderlich, um die Identität der Mobileinheiten zu bestimmen, welche sich ihnen zugeordnet haben, und um aus den Datenpaketen auf dem Netzwerk diejenigen Pakete zu extrahieren, welche an eine Mobileinheit adressiert sind, die dem Zugangspunkt zugeordnet ist. Diese Anforderung führte zu einer deutlichen Verarbeitungslast für die Zugangspunkte und zu erhöhten Kosten für die Zugangspunkte.
- Bei dem System der
1 kommuniziert der Zentralcomputer10 über ein drahtgestütztes Ethernet-Netzwerk18 mit intelligenten Vermittlungs-Hubs16 . Alternativ kann ein Token-Ring-Netzwerk verwendet werden. Die Vermittlungs-Hubs16 bestimmen das Ziel jedes Pakets und leiten Pakete zu Zugangspunkten14 , falls das Ziel des Pakets eine Mobileinheit12 ist, welche dem Zugangspunkt14 zugeordnet ist. Um diese Funktion zu erzielen, ist der Hub ein intelligenter Hub, welcher eine Routingliste der Mobileinheiten12 und des mit ihnen verbundenen Zugangspunkts14 gemäß dem Port jedes Hubs unterhält. Diese Listen werden unter Verwendung des Paketverarbeitungsprozesses der2 erzeugt, wobei der Prozessor des Hubs bei Schritt30 die Paketquelladressdaten und Paketzieladressdaten jedes Pakets liest, welches auf einem seiner Ports empfangen wird. Die Quelladressdaten werden bei Schritt32 verwendet, um eine Routingliste34 zu aktualisieren, welche einen Port des Hubs mit einer Datenquelladresse identifiziert. Die Zielad ressdaten des Pakets werden bei Schritt36 verwendet, um zu bestimmen, zu welchem Port das Paket geleitet werden muss, gemäß dem Port welcher dieser Adresse in Leitwegliste34 zugeordnet ist. Bei Schritt38 wird das Paket zu dem passenden Port geleitet. - In der Praxis muss der Hub nur eine Quellliste
34 für diejenigen Zugangspunkte14 , welche mit dem Hub16 verbunden sind, und für Mobileinheiten unterhalten, welche den Zugangspunkten14 zugeordnet sind, welche mit dem Hub16 verbunden sind. Falls folglich an einem Hub ein Paket über das Ethernet18 mit einer Zieladresse empfangen wird, welche nicht diesem Hub zugeordnet ist, muss die Quelladresse nicht auf der Liste34 unterhalten werden. Der Hub leitet das Paket nur zu einem Zugangspunkt, falls die Zieladresse des Pakets auf der Liste34 identifiziert wird, andernfalls wird das Paket ignoriert. Wenn ein Paket auf einem Port des Hubs empfangen wird, welcher einer Kommunikationsleitung20 zugeordnet ist, welche mit einem Zugangspunkt verbunden ist, wird die Quelladresse in der Liste34 dem Port des Hubs zugeordnet. Das Paket wird entweder an die Ethernet-Verbindung18 oder an einen anderen Port gemäß der Zieladresse geleitet. - Vorteilhafterweise, um die Liste zu aktualisieren, welche von Hub
16 unterhalten wird, stellt bei einer ersten Zuordnung einer Mobileinheit zu einem Zugangspunkt entweder die Mobileinheit oder der neu zugeordnete Zugangspunkt ein Nachrichtenpaket bereit, wie beispielsweise eine Broadcast Message an den Hub16 , wobei die Quelladresse der Nachricht der Mobileinheit entspricht. Beim Empfang dieser Nachricht aktualisiert der Hub seine Liste, um die Zuordnung der Mobileinheit zu dem Port aufzunehmen, mit welchem der Zugangspunkt verbunden ist. - Durch Bestimmen der Zieladresse in Hub
16 und durch Unterhalten der Zuordnung einer Mobileinheit12 zu einem Zu gangspunkt14 , welcher mit einem Port des Hubs16 verbunden ist, in der Routingliste34 des Hubs16 , wird die erforderliche Funktionalität der Zugangspunkte stark reduziert. Der Zugangspunkt fungiert bloß als ein Kanal, welcher HF-Übertragungen von Paketen sendet, welche auf Kommunikationsleitung20 empfangen wurden, und eine Übertragung von zugeordneten Mobileinheiten12 empfängt und dem Hub16 Ethernet-Pakete bereitstellt. Zusätzlich muss der Zugangspunkt14 Zuordnungsfunktionen für Mobileinheiten bereitstellen, wie sie bei dem Spektrum 24® System bereitgestellt werden, und kann auch Proxy-Abfrageerwiderungen für zugeordnete Mobileinheiten12 bereitstellen, welche sich im Energiesparmodus befinden. - Während der Zugangspunkt
14 routinemäßig als ein Kommunikationskanal an seine zugeordneten Mobileinheiten fungiert, ist eine begrenzte Auswahl von Datenpaketen möglich. Insbesondere kann der Zugangspunkt14 beispielsweise so eingerichtet werden, dass er bestimmte Typen von Broadcast Messages nicht weiterleitet, wie beispielsweise Router-Broadcast Messages, welche nicht von den Mobileinheiten empfangen werden müssen. Bei einer anderen Anordnung können mehrere Zugangspunkte parallel mit einem einzelnen Hub verbunden werden, in welchem Fall die Zugangspunkte so eingerichtet werden können, dass sie keine Nachrichten weiterleiten, welche an Mobileinheiten gerichtet sind, welche anderen Zugangspunkten zugeordnet sind. -
8 ist ein Blockdiagramm eines Funkmoduls50 zur Verwendung in dem Spektrum 24® System. Das Modul weist Komponenten auf, welche einen Mikroprozessor und ein Programm zum Ausführen von Frequenzsprung-SS-modulations-Kommunikation (frequency hop, spread spectrum communications) unter Einsatz der IEEE-Norm 802.11 in dem 2,4-GHz-Frequenzband umfassen. Das Funkmodul50 weist einen 80C188-Prozessor60 auf, welcher unter der Galaxy-Firmware von Symbol Technologies und zusammen mit dem Schnittstellenpro tokoll des Spektrum 24® Systems arbeitet. Die Firmware wird im Flash-Speicher62 gespeichert, und der SRAM64 stellt Arbeitsspeicher- und Datenpufferfunktionen bereit. Die Schnittstelle58 kann ein S24-DRVP-low-level-polled-Schnittstellenmodul sein. - In
3 wird eine vereinfachte Zugangspunktkonfiguration unter Einsatz des Funkmoduls50 als eine Einheit gezeigt. Das Funkmodul50 ist über eine PCMCIA-Schnittstelle58 mit Datenbus71 verbunden, welcher auch mit Prozessor72 , SRAM70 und mit dem Ethernet-Schnittstellenmodul74 verbunden ist, welches einen CS8900-Ethernet-Controller umfasst, welcher von Cirrus erhältlich ist. Die Firmware für Prozessor72 mag auf Speicher62 bereitgestellt werden, welcher an Bus56 angeschlossen ist, oder alternativ mag sie vom Flash-Speicher62 nach SRAM70 gestartet werden. Der Prozessor72 arbeitet mit Ethernet-Controller74 als Teil seines Speicherplatzes, welcher durch DMA zugänglich ist, um Nachrichten zwischen dem Ethernet-Controller74 und dem Funkmodul50 über den Puffer70 zu übermitteln. - In
5 wird eine alternative Anordnung gezeigt. In dem Zugangspunkt14' der5 sind die Komponenten des Funkmoduls50 modifiziert, um eine unmittelbare Schnittstelle über ASIC84 an Ethernet-Controller74 über einen DMA-Kanal in Schnittstelle84 bereitzustellen. Das Funkmodul und der Schnittstellentransfer werden von CPU78 abgewickelt, welche mit kombinierter Firmware auf Flash-Speicher82 und unter Verwendung eines vergrößerten SRAM80 bereitgestellt wird. - In
9 wird eine weitere alternative Anordnung als Zugangspunkt14'' gezeigt. In Zugangspunkt14'' werden die CPU-, ASIC- und Ethernet-Controller-Funktionen von CPU90 bereitgestellt, so dass nur ein einzelner Prozessor erforderlich ist. - Gemäß einem weiteren Merkmal der vorliegenden Erfindung werden die vereinfachten Zugangspunkte
14 ,14' und14'' über die Ethernet-Verkabelung mit Strom versorgt. Insbesondere wird die Ethernet-Datenkommunikation mit den Zugangspunkten auf zwei der vier Drahtpaare auf dem Ethernet-Kabel20 ausgeführt. Die verbleibenden zwei Paare des Kabels20 werden verwendet, um die Zugangspunkte mit Gleichstrom zu versorgen, Unter Bezugnahme auf7 weist der Hub16 einen intelligenten Standard-Vermittlungs-Hub40 mit einem Ethernet-Port an Kabel18 und beispielsweise sieben zusätzlichen Ethernet-Ports an Kabel20 zum Anschluss an Zugangspunkte14 auf. Das Gleichstrommodul42 ist zwischen den Zugangspunkt-Ports des Hubs40 und den Kabeln20 angeschlossen, um den zusätzlichen Drahtpaaren der Kabel20 Gleichstrom, z.B. 12 bis 50 V Gleichstrom, bereitzustellen. Das Gleichstrommodul kann intern in den Hub einbezogen werden. - Jeder Zugangspunkt weist eine Gleichstrom-Gleichstrom-Stromversorgung
76 zum Umwandeln der Gleichstromspannung aus Kabel20 auf einen geeigneten Pegel, z.B. 5 Volt, auf, um die Logik- und Funkschaltkreise des Zugangspunkts zu betreiben. - Eine andere Anordnung zur Stromversorgung des Zugangspunkts wird in
10 gezeigt. Drosselschaltungen42 werden in Kabel20 aus dem Vermittlungs-Hub40 an Zugangspunkt14 zwischengeschaltet. Gleichstrom von einer Stromversorgung41 , welche auch der Hub40 versorgen kann, ist unter Verwendung von beispielsweise der Drosselschaltung42 , welche in13 gezeigt wird und welche von Pulse in San Diego, Kalifornien, Modell P0421, erhältlich ist, an Kabel20 angeschlossen. Unter Verwendung dieser Schaltung wird auf allen Leitungen des Kabels20 Gleichstrom geführt. Kondensatoren in Schaltung42 isolieren die Gleichstromquelle von den Daten-Ports bei Hub40 und Zugangspunkt14 , während die induktiven Schaltkreise verhindern, dass die Stromversorgung hochfrequente Datensignale aufnimmt. - Unter Verwendung der Merkmale der vorliegenden Erfindung werden die Kosten, die Komplexität und die Größe des Zugangspunkts deutlich reduziert. Der Zugangspunkt erfordert keinen Anschluss an Primärenergie und ist nur durch das Ethernet-Kabel
20 mit dem Hub16 verbunden. Zusätzlich kann eine einfache Antenne102 innerhalb oder unmittelbar auf dem Modul befestigt werden, wie in11 gezeigt, um eine einfache Einheit von ungefähr der Größe eines tragbaren Tonbandspielers bereitzustellen, welches leicht an einer Wand oder Decke, möglicherweise unter Verwendung einer Velcro- oder Klebebefestigung, befestigt werden mag. Der Zugangspunkt mag ein Paar Kabelsteckbuchsen104 ,106 aufweisen, um ein Kabel an den Hub16 und möglicherweise ein Erweiterungskabel aufzunehmen, um einen zusätzlichen Zugangspunkt oder eine andere Vorrichtung aufzunehmen, welche mit dem gleichen Port des Hubs16 verbunden ist. Die Steckbuchsen104 und106 sind parallel verdrahtet. - Bei einer anderen Anordnung kann der Zugangspunkt
14 mit einem Steckverbinder108 bereitgestellt werden, welcher von einem Sockel110 an einer Wand oder von einer oberflächenmontierten Einheit112 aufgenommen wird, wie in12 gezeigt. -

Es können eine verbesserte Abdeckung und eine verbesserte Kapazität bereitgestellt werden. -
6 zeigt eine Anlage in einem großen Geschäft, z.B. einem Geschäft, welches ein Selbstbedienungseinkaufssystem mit Funkdatenkommunikation unter Verwendung von tragbaren Terminals oder elektronischen Regaletiketten mit drahtloser Kommunikation verwendet. Es können Zugangspunkte an vielen Orten überall in dem Geschäft bereitgestellt werden, um Totbereiche zu vermeiden, und es können zusätzliche Zugangspunkte nahe der Kassenstationen bereitgestellt werden, um die Möglichkeit eines stärkeren Verwendungsbedarfs in diesem Bereich abzuwickeln.
Claims (7)
- Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem (LAN), aufweisend eine Datenvermittlungszentrale (
16 ) mit mehreren Daten-Ports (20 ) und einen Prozessor der Zentrale und einen oder mehrere Zugangspunkte (14 ), welche mit den Daten-Ports der Datenvermittlungszentrale (16 ) funktionsfähig verbunden sind, wobei die Zugangspunkte (14 ) eingerichtet sind, um drahtlos Daten an und von entfernten Einheiten (12 ) unter Verwendung von RF-Kommunikation zu übertragen und zu empfangen, wobei die Datenvermittlungszentrale (16 ) mindestens eine Leitwegliste (34 ) aufweist, welche Quelladressdaten umfasst, welche entfernte Einheiten (12 ) mit Zugangspunkten (14 ) in Beziehung bringt, welchen die entfernten Einheiten (12 ) zugeordnet sind, wobei die Datenvermittlungszentrale (16 ) konfiguriert ist, Daten auf der Grundlage der Leitwegliste (34 ) an Zugangspunkte (14 ) zu leiten, wobei das drahtlose lokale Netzwerk dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass: jede der entfernten Einheiten (12 ) betreibbar ist, Quelladressdaten zu übertragen, jede entfernte Einheit an einen Daten-Port (20 ) der Datenvermittlungszentrale (16 ) angeschlossen ist; der Prozessor der Zentrale betreibbar ist, Quelladressdaten zu lesen, welche an dem Daten-Port (20 ) empfangen wurden, die Leitwegliste (34 ) zu aktualisieren, um eine Quelladresse entsprechend der empfangenen Quelladressdaten aufzunehmen, und um Daten nicht zu beachten, welche keine Zieladresse entsprechend einer Quelladresse aufweisen, welche in der aktualisierten Leitwegliste (34 ) aufgenommen ist. - Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem nach Anspruch 1, wobei die Datenvermittlungszentrale (
16 ) und der eine oder die mehreren Zugangspunkte (14 ) mit einem vorhandenen drahtgestützten Netzwerk verbunden sind. - Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem nach Anspruch 2, wobei das vorhandene drahtgestützte Netzwerk ein Ethernet umfasst.
- Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem nach Anspruch 1, wobei der drahtlose Kommunikationsserver mit dem einen oder den mehreren Zugangspunkten (
14 ) durch eine unmittelbare Kabelverbindung verbunden ist. - Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem nach Anspruch 1, weiterhin umfassend mindestens eine zusätzliche Datenvermittlungszentrale (
16 ). - Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem nach Anspruch 5, wobei die mindestens eine zusätzliche Datenvermittlungszentrale (
16 ) Dienste für zusätzliche Zugangspunkte (14 ) bereitstellt. - Drahtloses lokales Netzwerksystem nach Anspruch 1, wobei die Zugangspunkte (
14 ) die drahtlosen Hochfrequenzsignale unter Verwendung eines 2,4-GHz-Frequenzbands übertragen.
