Abstract

For psychotherapeutic purposes and for research into unconscious emotional processes it is important and necessary to remember dreams. The best method of remembering a dream is to be woken immediately after a dream and to record its contents immediately. The invention is based on the object of permitting automatic waking after a dream. For this, the rapid eye movement phase (REM phase) which occurs during dreaming is recorded by electronic means. The drawing shows that the waking process is achieved in that at least two electrodes (1) are fastened in the eye region of the sleeping individual and are attached via supply lines (2) to a handy, electronic control device (3) in which the voltages caused by the eye movements are intensified and analysed in such a way that they lead to triggering of a waking signal when a value exceeds a threshold value and then falls below this, and when a further voltage increase is missing during a predetermined time interval.

Field of application: The invention relates to a device for automatic Awakening a sleeping person following a dream.

Purpose: For psychotherapeutic purposes and as an aid to self-awareness and to research unconscious mental processes is the memory of dreams important and necessary. Everyone dreams three to six times a night, however, the ability to remember trawn contents is subject to great fluctuations. The best way to remember a dream is to do it immediately To be awakened following a dream and to record its content immediately.

Je kürzer dieser Abstand ist, desto größer ist die Erinnerung an den vorangegangenen ?raun (U. J.state of the art: In 1952 it was discovered that the eyes of a sleeping person while dreaming. This phase of the fast Eye movements (Rapid Eye Movement = REM) is known as the hEM phase (Zeitschrift "Science", 1953 year, volume 118, pages 273 to 274; Journal of Experimental Psychology ", Volume 195, Volume 53, Pages 339 to 346). The eyes However, they do not move evenly throughout a room, rather they alternate Salvos of eye movements lasting a few seconds with periods of eye standstill from (N. Birbaumer, Physiological Psychology, Berlin Heidelberg New York 1975, pp 91 to 115). This gave rise to eye activities in sleep laboratories to register sleeping person with the help of the electrooculogram (EOG) and their closer To explore the connection with dream and sleep processes. This was ds memory of a dream depending on the time interval between waking up from the end of the dream phase examined. The shorter this distance, the greater the memory of the previous? raun (U. Kritik: Dabei sind aufwendige Schlaflaboratorien nötig, in denen die Augenbewegungen meist mit Hilfe von Polygraphen auf Papier registriert werden, die ein wachender Versuchsleiter ständig beobachten muß, um nach Abschluß der REM-Phase die schlafende Person zu wecken.Criticism: Elaborate sleep laboratories are necessary in which the Eye movements are usually recorded on paper with the help of polygraphs a watchful experimenter has to keep an eye on after the REM phase has been completed to wake the sleeping person.

Task: The invention is based on the task of the automatic Awakening a sleeping person after a dream by simple means to enable.

Solution: This object is achieved according to the invention in that at least two electrodes are attached in the eye area of the sleeping persion and via leads nn an electronic control unit, within which the voltages that caused by eye movements during the REM phase and are evaluated in such a way that they are after a threshold value has been exceeded and subsequent dropping below a specified value as well as failing to occur a further increase in voltage during a specified time interval for triggering a wake-up signal.

Achievable advantages: The advantages achieved with the invention exist especially in the fact that everyone interested in their premises has the opportunity is given, without much app rative effort and without a watchful helper, only with the help of a portable and handy device to remember your dreams, in order to use them especially for psychotherapeutic purposes Description of a An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and is described in more detail in the following game: At least two electrodes 1 are attached to the skin in the eye area of the person, here in the drawing as an example below the eyes. But there would also be other places, e.g. B. next to or above the Eyes possible. The electrodes conduct potential differences from the skin surface caused by eye movements, and) eit them via leads 2 to an electronic control unit 3. In this are the derived voltages amplified and evaluated. When the voltage first reaches a threshold for the Duration exceeds a specified time, then falls below a specified value falls again, possibly again exceeds the threshold value, finally a renewed increase in voltage If there is no signal during a specified time interval, an alarm signal is triggered.
