BESCHREIBUNGDESCRIPTION
DRACHENRIGGDRAGON RIGGING
This invention enables the use and safe control of tractive forces of large kites to drive sailing vehicles, especially sailing ships. The main advantage of kite pulling forces compared to sailing forces is the drastic reduction in heeling moments, or, depending on the ship design, their complete avoidance. While speed-reducing ballast or boom floats are necessary for sailing rigs, and heeling creates additional weight-increasing force components, kite rigs can largely do without ballast and booms. In addition, weight-reducing force components are even created. This means that higher wind speeds and wind forces can be exploited and higher vehicle speeds can be achieved.
Offenlegungsschrift Nr 29 33 050.A kite sport has now developed in which a wide variety of water, land or ice vehicles are pulled by kites, which are usually held by the drivers themselves on ropes or rods. For the purpose of this task, one can essentially distinguish between kite rigs with a free-flying windbreak surface held only by ropes and those in which the windbreak surface is relatively rigid but adjustable outside the vehicle, similar to a kite. The windbreak surfaces held only by ropes are not protected against falling, e.g. publication no. 29 33 050.
The difficulty of using these towing sails, especially on ships, is that it is almost inevitable that the kites will land on the ground or in the water when taking off and landing, but also during flight, and this makes their use impractical. Examples of rigid kite rigs are, for example, publication no. 2431 710 or the ship "Aquarius" in Marchaj, "Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics of Sailing", page 726. In these cases, the surface is adjustable during travel and is secured against falling, so that use on ships is already possible. However, here either the sail surface is too small or the boom with windbreak surface is too long and heavy, so that even at rest, excessive heeling moments occur. In addition, the "Aquarius" was not seaworthy and there were frequent, dangerous capsizings because the rigid sail mount transmitted heeling moments and moments around the ship's vertical axis in gusts.

In Gebrauchsmuster Nr. In utility model no. G 87 02 480.2, the kite pulling rope is basically replaced by a mast that is attached to the base in a ball joint-like manner so that it can rotate. By limiting the mast inclination using a stop, the kite is secured against falling, but the above-mentioned heeling moments are again transmitted in gusts. Here too, either the sail area is too small in low wind speeds, or the boom with the kite is too long and heavy. Despite the telescopic mast, a considerable amount of force is therefore required to retrieve the kite, which limits its use to smaller boats. In addition, the kite tips over in low wind speeds and is no longer hit by the airflow from the leading edge, so that it has to be attached to the vertical mast and courses high upwind are no longer possible. In order to not only have to hold kite pulling forces with their advantages by hand on small vehicles, but also to use them to build larger and faster sailing vehicles than before, the following problems still arise:
- Bewahrung der Windfangflächen vor dem Absturz und Flugstabil isation unter Erhaltung der gleichen Bewegungsfreiheit wie bei freifliegenden, leinengefesselten Drachen- Protection of the windbreak surfaces from crashing and flight stabilization while maintaining the same freedom of movement as with free-flying, line-tied kites
- Vermeidung von zu großen dynamischen Krängungsmomenten bei Böen und Feh!steuerung, sowie statischen Krängungsmomenten ohne Wind- Avoid excessive dynamic heeling moments in gusts and missteering, as well as static heeling moments without wind
- Verwirklichung großer Drachensegelflächen für große Segelfahrzeuge und für schwache Winde bei gleichzeitig einfacher und sicherer Handhabung- Realization of large kite sail areas for large sailing vessels and for light winds while at the same time being easy and safe to handle
- Ermöglichung von Kursen hoch am Wind und hohen Geschwindigkeiten durch Verwendung von Windfangflächen mit kleinem Verhältnis von Widerstand zu Auftrieb und zwangsläufig geringer Flugstabilität- Enabling courses close to the wind and high speeds by using windbreak surfaces with a low drag-to-lift ratio and inevitably low flight stability
- Anpaßungsmöglichkeit an geringe und hohe Windgeschwindigkeiten und verschiedene Kurse durch unterschiedliche Größen und Typen von Windfangflächen- Ability to adapt to low and high wind speeds and different courses through different sizes and types of windbreak surfaces
- Stabiler Flug auf allen Kursen- Stable flight on all courses
Figur 1 zeigtThe solution to these problems is made possible by the present invention according to claims 1 to 14. GRUNDAUSFÜHRUNGa ship with a rig that is built with a boom mast and four windbreak surfaces. Figure 2 shows a rig with two boom masts according to claim 4. Figure 3 shows an example of a control device. Figure 4 defines angle designations based on a windbreak surface in any position in the theoretically possible wind window. BASIC DESIGN
The mounting and guidance of the windbreak surfaces 3 on the boom mast 2 prevents them from falling down and enables the surfaces to be guided in different numbers, types and sizes. In rigs according to claim 1, the windbreak surfaces are connected to guide rings 13 or sliders that are arranged so that they can be moved on the boom mast or in a rail attached to it. The rings or sliders are connected to a boom halyard 8 that is deflected over the end of the boom. This makes it possible to increase or decrease the sail area (reefing) by setting additional windbreak surfaces or reefing them. By changing the surfaces during the trip, the rig can be optimized for a wide variety of wind conditions and courses.
The system can ensure that the kites can fly freely without touching the water even if the steering is incorrect, as long as the heeling angle of the ship is smaller than the angle of inclination Epsilon in Fig. 4, which can be adjusted using the holding ropes 5, 6, 7. The auxiliary mast 1 holds the boom mast with the wind-catching surfaces in a resting state via the holding ropes and as long as they are not yet self-supporting in light winds. The holding rope 6 or 7, which is located at the top of the respective course, can be adjusted so that the leading edges are advantageously exposed to vertical air flow even in light winds and with the wind, as shown in Fig. 1. Due to the free rotation of the boom mast around the bearing pivot point 10 and the fact that the auxiliary mast is not braced and supported at the front, the boom mast with the wind-catching surfaces can move freely 90° to port, starboard and upwards from the ship's longitudinal axis, thus making use of the entire theoretically possible wind window. This means that all courses of the ship relative to the wind can be sailed, just like with conventional sailing rigs. The courses to the wind and the corresponding positions of the kites and the boom relative to the ship are described, for example, in "Stunt Kites", van der Horst, Velthuizen. Changing from port to starboard bow is only possible by jibing and not by turning. The possible height on the wind and the maximum speed are determined by the aerodynamic effectiveness of the rig, i.e. the ratio of lift to drag force, as well as by the hydrodynamic properties of the ship or the vehicle properties.
- 4 - 295 Ol 822.4- 4 - 295 Ol822.4
The rig according to the invention allows the freedom of movement as with free-flying kites, but reduces the number of degrees of freedom, which makes the flight more stable. At the same time, the kites are prevented from crashing. It is only necessary to ensure that when limiting the freedom of movement downwards, no or only small heeling moments are transmitted, as described in claim 2.
KRÄNGUNGSSTABILITÄTBy using winches, cranks and other traction devices to reduce the operating forces in the holding and control cables, ships of the same size and sail area as with conventional rigs can be achieved. Ships with conventional rigs and even motorboats can be converted to the kite rig quite easily. HEELING STABILITY
Sails are aerodynamically more effective the longer the leading edge is in relation to the profile width. However, the longer the leading edge of the windbreak surface standing upright on close-hauled courses, the longer the boom mast must be, with the same height or angle of elevation epsilon above the water. In order to be able to set sufficiently large sail areas in low wind strengths, it is therefore better to divide the total area into several smaller individual areas. Otherwise, as with disclosure 24 31 710, the required wide outreach would result in an excessively large static heeling moment being compensated for by ballast or boom hulls. This static heeling moment can be kept very small by using lightweight material for the windbreak surfaces, boom mast and lines. Another very important reason for using several parallel sails is the tipping stability in gusts, incorrect steering and uneven wind impact on the windbreak surfaces. This dynamic stability is greater the smaller the lever arm under which the kite forces act, i.e. i.e. the shorter the leading edge can be made with the same boom length by dividing it into several surfaces.
Hinzu kommt, daß sich das Zentrum der Windkräfte in einigem AbstandIn addition to this stability, further measures are provided according to claim 2 to avoid excessive dynamic heeling moments caused by gusts or incorrect steering. These increase the lift forces of the windbreak surfaces the more the boom with the windbreak surfaces is pushed downwards by the wind and the heeling moment transmitted via the holding ropes in the event of limitation. For this purpose, for example, the holding ropes near the end of the boom mast are first loaded so that it bends downwards and the windbreak surfaces generate greater lift through a flatter flight angle Gamma, which counteracts the heeling moment. In addition, the center of the wind forces is some distance away
- 5 - 295 Ol 822.4- 5 - 295 Ol822.4
FLUGSTABILITÄTfrom the boom mast and thus a moment is exerted around it when limited, causing the leading edges to turn from the vertical in the direction of climbing, so that this also results in a further reduction in the heeling moment. For this purpose, the windbreak surfaces can also be tilted so that the control angle Phi changes in the direction of greater lift. The above objectives can also be supported or improved by partially stretchable control and holding cables or other measures.
FLIGHT STABILITY
From experience with kites tied to lines and manned hang gliders, it is known that stabilization devices are necessary for stable flight and that these inevitably reduce aerodynamic efficiency. In kites, yaw, roll and pitch stability around the vertical, longitudinal and transverse axes is usually achieved through twisting, tunneling, sweeping, length/width ratio, reflex, etc., at the expense of increasing resistance. Only a minimum of these stabilization devices is required in the present concept, since the parallel windbreak surfaces support each other in the direction of pull and are supported perpendicularly by the boom. Flight stability increases, among other things, with increasing length of the bridle legs, as long as the lines are taut. Since they are at their maximum length in the present rig, namely from the kite to the ship, stability around the longitudinal and transverse axes is already very high. Moments only have to be compensated around the vertical axis or the boom mast. If small surface parts are used for this purpose, which are located at the ends of the surface and are approximately perpendicular to them, the induced drag is reduced at the same time and very simply constructed canvas wings can be used without twisting, which at the same time have a very high degree of efficiency.
Stabilization around the boom axis is also achieved if one of the holding cables 6 or 7, as shown in Figure 1, is attached to the end of one of the windbreak surfaces. If they are not yet self-supporting, they should rise against gravity when rotating around the boom mast, thereby resisting this rotation.
In order to further stabilize the flight of parallel windbreak surfaces and to prevent tangling, the connecting ropes between them can be guided through spacer tubes according to claim 3 or replaced by such.

MEHRERE AUSLEGERMULTIPLE BOOMS
TYPEN VON WINDFANGFLÄCHENThe flight stability can be further improved by using several boom masts or spars according to claim 4, whereby the stabilization, especially around the boom axis, is increased by limiting the number of degrees of freedom, and this in turn is reduced the more boom masts are used. This means that measures to increase the flight stability of windbreak surfaces are completely superfluous, meaning that windbreak surfaces with the highest degree of efficiency can be used. However, additional masts also increase the resistance. Another advantage is the higher operational safety, since hardly anything can twist or get tangled. When using more than two boom masts that converge at a base, a rigid boom frame is created, which can be built up from parts that can be put together or inflated according to claim 10. TYPES OF WINDBREAKER SURFACES
According to claim 5, a wide variety of types of windbreak surfaces, either already known or specially designed to meet the requirements, can be used. Wings have the highest aerodynamic efficiency and enable the highest speeds and the greatest height close to the wind. On the other hand, they have the lowest flight stability, which can be controlled with the present invention, as explained above. They can have an effective asymmetrical profile with the optimal profile thickness, either rigid or as a double sail, since they are blown from the correct side even when the bow side changes.
ANBINDUNG UND STEUERUNG DER WINDFANGFLÄCHENThe aerodynamic efficiency plays no role on courses with a tailwind, so that different sails can be used here than on close-hauled courses, e.g. very light rodless kites such as parafoils and paragliders or even stable hang gliders. Here it is more important to achieve the highest possible angle of attack without stalling and to use a large sail area with high strength and high flight stability. On these courses the kites can be flown with large angles of attack. However, this requires that they are controlled dynamically, ie constantly flying horizontally back and forth, otherwise they would climb too high or fly too far into the wind.
CONNECTION AND CONTROL OF THE WIND BREATHER AREAS
If there are several parallel windbreak surfaces of the same size, it must be ensured that the first one must be structurally reinforced to absorb forces in the direction of the leading edge, or that more traction/control cables or stronger scales are used.

According to claim 7, the control angle Delta is fixed via a balance on the windbreak surfaces, as is usual with two-line kites. Control is then only achieved by changing the control angle Phi and the angle of attack Alpha remains constant. This saves lines and therefore also resistance.
More extensive control and change of course angles is possible with the four-line control, which can also be carried out with three or more than four lines. This allows both angles Delta and Phi to be changed simultaneously, which means that the pulling forces can be freely selected for different boom positions and ship courses, and the entire wind window can be used.
Instead of tilting the entire windbreak surface area by the two control angles, according to claim 7 only two small surface areas at the ends of flexible windbreak surfaces need to be changed using two lines, as is known from paragliders. Only two pull lines and two much thinner control lines are then required for flight control. In the case of rigid windbreak surfaces, adjustable flaps can be arranged for this purpose.
STEUEREINRICHTUNGAccording to claim 9, the two control angles Delta and Phi can also be changed by an elevator and aileron separate from the windbreak surfaces, as in aircraft. This tail unit can be arranged in front of or behind the windbreak surfaces and can be remote-controlled electrically or pneumatically instead of by lines. This also makes automatic self-control of the windbreak surfaces and the course possible in a simple way. To simplify things, a larger tail unit can take over control of all the windbreak surfaces.
CONTROL DEVICE
The control lines can be operated with small rigs using steering rods or handles, as is known from kites, which are connected to the bearing pivot point via ropes to save power. For large rigs, power-reducing control devices according to claim 8 are necessary. According to Figure 3, the pulling forces of the individual control lines are balanced so that only the differential forces between left/right and front/back have to be overcome to move the lines.
Eine Verschiebung der an den An- und AbströmkantenIn addition, the remaining forces can be reduced by levers, winches or similar. A shift of the control lines acting on the ends of the windbreak surfaces against each other causes a change in the control angle Phi. A shift of the control lines acting on the leading and trailing edges

Ein Beispiel für eine von vielen konstruktiv möglichen Steuereinrichtungen zeigt Figur 3.The control lines acting on the windbreak surfaces against each other cause a change in the control angle delta. This control angle, which is decisive for the angle of attack alpha of the surfaces, can be changed using a winch, for example, to such an extent that the angle of attack can become almost zero and there is no longer any lift. To protect against excessive pulling forces, this device is equipped with a quick release. An example of one of the many possible control devices is shown in Figure 3.
The control cables 9 are attached to the ends of the frame 15, in the center of the frame the tensile forces are largely balanced. There the frame is connected to the connecting rod 16 via hinge joints 17, which can rotate around 2 axes and transfers the tensile forces to the bearing pivot point 10. This consists of a universal joint 18 and a pivot bearing 17. The bearing pivot point is attached to the vehicle in a movable manner in the guide rail 19. The control angle Delta can be adjusted via the cable winch 20 and cable 22, e.g. with a hand crank, by tilting the frame. The frame is tilted via cable 23 and cable winch 21 with handwheel so that the control angle Phi is changed.
In rigs with multiple booms according to claim 4, the ends of the boom masts are connected to the control device instead of the control lines, or both if present.
OF BOOM MAST AND CONNECTION OF WIND-CATCHING AREA/BOOM MAST The boom masts can be relatively thin and light, as they do not have to absorb sail propulsion forces, but only guide forces. In order not to leave the long boom mast(s) standing upright in the wind all the time when the ship is not sailing, it/they can also be removed from the bearing pivot point and attached to the deck. This is also possible with large rigs, as the boom can be carried by the auxiliary mast via at least one holding rope during assembly/disassembly. It can be put together from several manageable parts, which also improves the storage options on deck.
DasThe handling of the boom and the setting and retrieval of the windbreak surfaces can be made even easier by using inflatable stiffeners as boom masts, such as fire hoses. These offer high bending strength despite their low weight and diameter, as they can be operated at a pressure of 15 bar and have a burst pressure of 45 bar. A protective tube can be used in the starting area to protect against accidents. If such inflatable stiffeners are also used for the windbreak surfaces, you have a completely inflatable rig. The

Setting up and retrieving the windbreak surfaces is then particularly easy, as canvas, lines and hoses can be wound up together on a drum. The only disadvantage is a certain plastic component of the respective deflection, which on the other hand has a beneficial effect on vibration damping. The amount of air required for 15 bar can be supplied by a compressor and, if necessary, compressed air bottles can be carried along in order to be able to change the rig several times at short notice. At the connection points between the boom and the windbreak surfaces, the hoses can be interrupted by fixed pipe parts or T-pieces in order to create a fixed connection according to claim 12. This connection, which cannot be moved or rotated, further stabilizes the windbreak surfaces in flight and enables the entire rig to be rolled up and down on a drum. This also saves you having to fall on the boom to set up and retrieve the windbreak surfaces.
TYP HILFSMASTFixed connections between the boom and the windbreak surfaces can also have a simplifying and stabilizing effect on split, plug-in booms and on rigs with multiple booms. TYPE AUXILIARY MAST
Since the auxiliary mast does not have to absorb any sailing forces, but only the relatively small holding forces for the boom mast, it can be relatively thin and light. According to claim 11, it can be telescopically extendable or inflatable. This means that it only has to be as long as the boom when it is being set and stowed, and can be shortened to save resistance when sailing, or removed completely the rest of the time.
SETZEN UND BERGEN DER WINDFANGFLÄCHENThe auxiliary mast does not have to be vertical, but can also be inclined or curved so that the pivot point of the holding ropes at its tip is above the pivot point of the bearing before it is vertical. This means that the boom mast automatically adjusts itself in the direction of the ship's longitudinal axis without any control. SETTING AND RECOVERING THE WIND BREATHER PANELS
Dann können die Windfangflächen mit dem Auslegerfall hochgezogenTo set and retrieve the kite, the boom can be pulled up to the mast, or placed vertically. Depending on the wind conditions and the launch/recovery procedure, this is also possible with the boom tilted. The ship's course is kept so that the wind always blows from behind. The windbreaks are set up, provided they are not rigid or have no stiffeners, and connected to the rings on the boom. The connecting lines between the windbreaks, the holding lines, the boom halyard and the pulling and control lines on the first windbreak are attached. The windbreaks can then be pulled up with the boom halyard
The holding lines are adjusted by rolling them up and the traction/control lines are adjusted by letting them out so that they do not blow out. The boom can then be lowered by letting all the holding lines out to the desired limit position. The windbreak surfaces can now be positioned against the wind and controlled into the desired flying position.
VERSCHIEBUNG DES LAGERDREHPUNKTESWith fully inflatable rigs, the launch/recovery process is simplified by the possibility of winding up the entire rig, as described above. There is no need to attach the holding and connecting lines and the rig can be hoisted up as a whole on the auxiliary mast and started after inflation. With rigs with multiple boom masts, the booms must either be divided or inflatable in order to be able to be assembled or disassembled. The windbreak surfaces are recovered after the angle of attack has been released by loosening the control lines of the trailing edges. They can then be pulled in with the control lines of the leading edges while the boom halyard and the other control and holding lines are adjusted. SHIFTING THE BEARING PIVOT
KONVENTIONELLES SEGELThe pulling force of the rig acts on the bearing pivot, which is attached to the ship in such a way that it is neither windward nor leeward. However, the bearing pivot can be attached so that it can be moved in the direction of the ship's longitudinal axis in accordance with claim 13 in order to be able to steer the ship. This means that the ship's rudder can be taken out of the water on close-hauled courses in order to reduce water resistance. The same can also be achieved by moving it along the ship's transverse axis or in both directions at the same time, so that the line of action of the pulling force runs directly through the lateral center of gravity or comes as close as possible to it. This means that heeling moments and braking moments around the ship's vertical axis can be minimized or completely avoided.
CONVENTIONAL SAIL
Since the auxiliary mast is arranged in a similar way to a high mast of a conventional rig, conventionally attached sails can also be set on it. One of the holding ropes can serve as a forestay, two others each as a halyard, so that a headsail can be set and, if the aft stays and support of the auxiliary mast are designed accordingly, a mainsail can also be set. The auxiliary mast must then be dimensioned accordingly and equipped with a rail if necessary. Sailing is therefore also possible if the kite rig is unsuitable for reasons of space or if there is too little wind in relation to the sea state. A combination of both rigs can also be advantageous in light winds.
