The invention relates to a method for the production of fermentable sugar from sawdust, Wood waste or other cellulose-rich raw materials through the action of steam in the presence of a suitable hydrolyzing agent Agent.
Jedenfalls wurde festgestellt, daß durch das Abführen von flüchtigen Stoffen während des Kochens nicht nur ein höherer Prozentsatz löslicher Produkte unter sonstAccording to the preferred embodiment of the new method, the raw material brought in the air-dry state in a rotatable cooker and either before or after incorporation with a suitable hydrolyzing agent, for example with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, in the proportion of 0.5 to 2 percent of the charge weight thoroughly mixed. The cooker is set in motion and steam is poured into the mass under a suitable pressure, approximately from 5 to 7 atmospheres (70 to 100 pounds per square inch), introduced. Under these conditions It is known that the cellulose of the wood is hydrolyzed with the formation of fermentable sugar. The cooking is long enough, e.g. B. 15 to 60 minutes, or continued as long as until the implementation is sufficiently advanced. During this boiling, some of the vapors are allowed to evaporate Products that form during cooking either from the cooker into the air or escape into a suitable condenser; however will during this time the pressure inside the cooker is kept correspondingly high. The escape or drainage the vapors and volatiles can be either continuous or intermittent. It has been found that this results in a substantial increase in the yield of fermentable Sugar is obtained. It can be assumed that certain volatile products, which during of boiling, either by establishing chemical equilibrium or otherwise inhibit or limit the sugar formation reaction, and that if one parts of those substances steadily or at suitable intervals during cooking removed, the desired reaction proceeds more completely. Maybe that will help too more volatile products of antiseptic or anti-fermentation properties, e.g. B. Aldehydes or similar bodies removed, which if in bulk and in the remain from this extracted extract, exert a retarding effect on the yeast. It is also possible that the release of vapors only has mechanical effects and only increases the yield by that it induces an internal boil or surge, which is a more perfect distribution or exposure to the hydrolyzing agent. In any case, it was found that by evacuating volatile substances during cooking not only a higher one Percentage of soluble products under otherwise
