Description
Es ist bekannt, Bis-hydroxymethyl-methyl-phosphinoxid
dadurch herzustellen, daß man Bis-hydroxymethylmethyl-phosphin mit Wasserstoffperoxid in üblicher
Weise zum Phosphinoxid oxidiert, wobei die Gewinnung des Bis-hydroxymethyl-methyl-phosphins aus
Tris-hydroxymethylphosphin durch Anlagerung von Methyljodid und Abbau des dabei erhaltenen Tris-hydroxymethyl-methyl-phosphoniumjodids
mit Triäthylamin erfolgen kann:

Jedoch verläuft der Triäthylamin-Abbau des Tris-hydroxymethyl-methyl-phosphoniumjodids
nur mit mäßiger Ausbeute, und der Chemikalienaufwand ist verlustreich.
G. Ch. Kamaj et al. (J. obsc. chimii, Bd. 39 (1969),
Seiten 379 bis 382) berichten von Versuchen, wonach Tri-(oxymethyl)-phosphin und Tetrachlorkohlenstoff
auch beim Erwärmen bis zur Siedetemperatur nicht miteinander regieren.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß man Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid
dadurch herstellen kann, daß man Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphin mit mindestens 1 Gew.-% Tetrachlorkohlenstoff oder Tetrabromkohlenstoff
bei Temperaturen von - 10 bis + 12O0C vermischt
und nach beendeter Reaktion das erhaltene Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid
durch Abdestillieren des Tetrahalogenkohlenstoffes isoliert.
Bevorzugt sind Temperaturen von +5 bis +8O0C,
insbesondere +20 bis +700C und Ausschluß von Wasser und Alkoholen. Da die Reaktion, die in einer
Umlagerung eines Sauerstoffatoms von einer -CH2OH-GrUpPe zum P-Atom gemäß der Gleichung

besteht, exotherm verläuft, arbeitet man zweckmäßig unter Verdünnung in Gegenwart eines inerten organischen
Lösungsmittels bzw. Suspensionsmittels. Als solche Verdünnungsmittel sind beispielsweise verwendbar:
Benzol, Octan, Dimethylformamid, Benzonitril, Tetramethyl-harnstoff, Methylenchlorid, Chloroform,
Chlorbenzol, Äther wie Diisopropyläther, Ester wie Äthytecetat sowie Gemische aus diesen Verdünnungsmitteln.
Vorzugsweise wählt man ein Verdünnungsmittel, das bei der gewünschten Reaktionstemperatur
siedet Bezogen auf eingesetztes Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphin werden etwa '/3- bis 1Ofache, vorzugsweise 1-bis
4fache Gewichtsmengen an Verdünnungsmittel
ίο zugesetzt Arbeitet man ohne Verdünnungsmittel, so
sind Temperaturen von +5 bis +300C bevorzugt
Um die Umlagerung des Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphins katalysierende Menge an Tetrachlor- bzw.
Tetrabromkohlenstoff soll mindestens 1 Gew.-% bezogen auf das eingesetzte Phosphin betragen. Die
obere Grenze ist nicht kritisch, beide Katalysatoren können selbst auch als Verdünnungsmittel dienen. Im
allgemeinen verwendet man 10 bis 2000 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 20 bis 1000 Gew.-% an Tetrachlor- bzw.
Tetrabromkohlenstoff, bezogen auf das eingesetzte Phosphin. Bei Mengen unterhalb 100 Gew.-% ist die
zusätzliche Verwendung eines der obengenannten Verdünnungsmittel (100 bis 1000 Gew.-%) bevorzugt
Die Reaktionszeit beträgt je nach Reaktionsbedingungen etwa zwischen 0,1 und 80 Stunden. Zweckmäßig
arbeitet man unter Ausschluß von Sauerstoff. Allgemein werden mit steigender Reaktionstemperatur geringere
Katalysatormengen und kürzere Reaktionszeiten benötigt.
Die Aufarbeitung erfolgt nach Abkühlung des Reaktionsansatzes in an sich bekannter Weise durch
Abdestillieren des Katalysators und des Verdünnungsmittels und gegebenenfalls weitere Reinigung des
Rohproduktes durch Umkristallisieren, zum Beispiel aus
Dimethylformamid oder Äthanol.
Das nach vorliegendem Verfahren erhaltene Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid
ist wie ein nach E. I. Grinstein hergestelltes Vergleichsmuster ein bei etwa 700C schmelzender farbloser, hygroskopischer Feststoff
(Misch-Schmelzpunkt mit dem Produkt nach Grinstein ohne Depression), der in hydrophilen Lösungsmitteln
wie niederen Alkoholen, Glykol und Dimethylformamid leicht löslich, aber in Lipophilen wie Chloroform,
Äthylacetat, Dioxan unlöslich ist. Das durch Addition von 2 Mol Phenylisocyanat dargestellte Bisphenylurethan
(C6H5NHCO2CH2)2P(O)CH3 schmilzt, aus Äthanol
umkristallisiert, bei 172° C, genau wie ein Vergleichsmuster
aus dem nach E. I. Grinstein hergestellten Produkt; der Mischschmelzpunkt zeigt auch hier keine Depression.
Das NMR-Spektrum in D2O zeigt für die Methyl-Protonen
ein Dublett bei δ = 1,4 ppm und 1,7 ppm, für die Methylenprotonen ein Dublett bei 4,0 und 4,1 ppm und
ein Singlett für die OH-Protonen bei 4,7 ppm, relativ zu Tetramethylsilan.
Das IR-Spektrum zeigt wie beim OP(CH2OH)3 bei
1140cm-' die starke PO-Bande, bei 1100cm-' eine
starke PO-Bande, bei 3300 cm-' eine starke OH-Bande und zusätzlich bei 900 und 925 cm-' starke Eigenbanden.
Das so hergestellte Produkt findet Verwendung bei der Herstellung flammfester Polyurethane sowie als
Zwischenprodukt für Synthesen insbesondere von Flammschutzmitteln.
In einer Rührkolbenapparatur wurden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre 124 g Tris-hydroxymethyl-phosphin

mit 1000 g Tetrachlorkohlenstoff am Rückflußkühler
gerührt und auf 50° C erwärmt, worauf in der gebildeten Emulsion eine exotherme Reaktion einsetzte, die trotz
Kühlung zum Aufsieden des Tetrachlorkohlenstoffs führte. Nach Abklingen der Reaktion und Abstellen des
Rührers trennte sich die Emulsion in eine untere Schicht (CCU) und eine ölige Oberschicht; diese Oberschicht
ergab nach Abdestillieren von restlichem Tetrachlorkohlenstoff 120 g eines kristallisierenden Öls vom Fp.
56°C. Nach zweimaligem Umkristallisieren aus Dimethylformamid und Äthanol betrug der Fp. 69° C IR- und
NMR-Spektren entsprachen dem nach Grinstein hergestellten (HOCH2J2P(O)CH3, ebenso das Gaschromatogramm
nach Silylieren mit Ν,Ο-Bis-trimethylsilylacetamid,
nämlich 97% Bis-(trimethylsilyl-oxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid Elutionstemperatur 204° C, sowie
2% Tris-(trimethylsilyl-oxymethyl)-phosphinoxid, Elutionstemperatur
216° C.
Analyse: C3H9O3P
berechnet: C 29,0, H 73, P 25%;
gefunden: C 28,5, H 7,2, P 24,5%.

In einer Rührkolbenapparatur wurden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre
0,15 Mol = 19 g Tris-hydroxymethylphosphin in 19 g Dimethylformamid bei Raumtemperatur
gelöst und mit 5,5 g = 0,037 Mol Tetrachlorkohlenstoffversetzt Die klare Lösung erwärmte sich sofort auf
80° C und wurde weitere 8 Stunden auf dieser Temperatur gehalten.
Nach Abdestillieren des Katalysators sowie des Verdünnungsmittels unter Hochvakuum bis zu einer
Sumpftemperatur von 80° C resultierten als Rückstand 18 g eines Produktes, das mit dem nach Beispiel 1
erhaltenen Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid identisch war. 1,2 g (0,0! Mol) davon wurden mit 2,5 g
(0,021 Mol) Phenylisocyanat in 5 g Dimethylformamid unter Zusatz von 0,3 g Pyridin umgesetzt. Die Reaktion
erfolgte unter Selbsterwärmung auf 50°C.
Nach 2 Stunden Stehen bei 50° C wurde die Reaktionslösung in 100 Teile Wasser von 20° C
eingerührt, wobei das Bisphenylurethan wachsartig ausfiel und über Nacht erstarrte; Fp. 165°C. Nach
Umkristallisieren des Roh-Urethans aus 2 Teilen Äthanol stieg der Schmelzpunkt des Derivates in guter
Ausbeute auf 172° C, ohne sich bei nochmaligem Umkristallisieren weiter zu erhöhen.
Analyse: Ci7Hi9N2O5P
berechnet: C 56,4, H 5,2, N 7,7, P 8,5%;
gefunden: C 57,0, H 5,3, N 8,1, P 8,2%.
gefunden: C 57,0, H 5,3, N 8,1, P 8,2%.
Das Vergleichsprodukt nach E. I. Grinstein gab, in gleicher Weise mit Phenylisocyanat umgesetzt, dasselbe
Bisphenylurethan; der Mischschmelzpunkt beider Urethane zeigte keine Depression.
In einer Rührkolbenapparatur wurden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre 19 g Tris-hydroxymethylphosphin mit
70 g Chloroform, dem 5 g Tetrachlorkohlenstoff zugesetzt waren, 12 Stunden bei 610C unter Rückfluß
gerührt. Dabei erfolgte in der emulsionsartigen Mischung allmählich die Umlagerung zum Bis-(hydroxy-

60 methyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid, wie entnommene Proben
nach Abziehen des Chloroforms und Tetrachlorkohlenstoffs unter vermindertem Druck IR-spektroskopisch
und jodometrisch zeigten. Danach wurden das Chloroform
und der Katalysator unter vermindertem Druck bei 70° C abdestilliert Es wurden als Rückstand 18 g
eines beim Abkühlen kristallisierenden Öls erhalten, das identisch war mit dem nach Beispiel 1 erhaltenen
Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid. Bei Wiederholung des Versuches, aber ohne Zusatz von Tetrachlorkohlenstoff,
war das Tris-hydroxymethylphosphin erst nach 50 Stunden umgesetzt jedoch etwa zur Hälfte in
andersartige Nebenprodukte.
In einer Rührkolbenapparatur wurden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre 31 g Tris-hydroxymethylphosphin mit
45 g Benzol bei 65° C gerührt Zu der erhaltenen emulsionsartigen Mischung wurden innerhalb von 15
Minuten 8 g Tetrachlorkohlenstoff getropft Danach wurden der Ansatz noch 6 Stunden bei 70° C unter
Rückfluß gerührt und anschließend das Verdünnungsmittel mit Katalysator bei 80° C unter reduziertem
Druck vollständig abdestilliert Als Rückstand wurden 30 g eines farblosen, beim Abkühlen kristallierenden Öls
vom Fp. 48° C erhalten, das nach Umkristallisieren aus Äthanol wie in Beispiel 1 als Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid
identifiziert werden konnte (Fp. 69°C).
In einer Rührkolbenapparatur wurden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre zu einer Mischung aus 90 g Benzol und
16 g Tetrachlorkohlenstoff bei 80° C am Rückfluß 62 g
Tris-hydroxymethyl-phosphin unter kräftigem Rühren innerhalb von 1 Stunden zugetropft. Die einsetzende
Umlagerungsreaktion verläuft unter Wärmeentwicklung.
Die resultierende emulsionsartige Reaktionsmischung wurde noch '/2 Stunde unter Rückfluß
nachgerührt und dann stehen gelassen, wobei Phasentrennung erfolgte. Aus der unteren Schicht wurden nach
der Abtrennung von Katalysator- und Verdünnungsmittelresten bei 70° C unter vermindertem Druck 60 g eines
Öls erhalten, das beim Abkühlen eine kristalline Masse vom Fp. 48° C bildete und nach Umkristallisieren aus
Äthanol IR-spektrometrisch und gaschromatographisch als Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid identifi
ziert wurde (Fp. 69° C).
In einer Rührkolbenapparatur wurden unter Stickstoffatmosphäre 62 g pulverisiertes Tris-hydroxymethyl-phosphin
in 320 g Tetrachlorkohlenstoff von 3"C eingetragen. Nach etwa 24stündigem Rühren bei 5° C
war eine Emulsion entstanden, die noch 2 Stunden bei 250C gerührt wurde. Nach Abstellen des Rührens schied
sich eine ölige Oberschicht ab, die abgetrennt wurde und aus der Reste von Tetrachlorkohlenstoff bei 6O0C unter
vermindertem Druck entfernt wurden. Es verblieben 61 g öliger Rückstand, die beim Abkühlen zu einer
kristallinen Masse (Fp. 49°C) erstarrten und als Bis-(hydroxymethy!)-methyl-phosphinoxid (Fp. 69°C)
identifiziert wurden.
Claims (2)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Tris-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphin mit mindestens 1 Gew.-% Tetrachlorkohlenstoff
oder Tetrabromkohlenstoff bei Temperaturen von —10 bis +1200C vermischt und nach
beendeter Reaktion das erhaltene Bis-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-phosphinoxid durch Abdestillieren des
Tetrahalogenkohlenstoffs isoliert
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man dem Reaktionsgemisch organische Verdünnungsmittel zusetzt
