Abstract
Description
In the early 80s it was found that nanocrystals line crystals, when compacted, over a relatively high Interfacial volume that is special to the materials Gives properties. However, this was only for materials found that the only phase containing a nanocrystalline phase, where the nanocrystalline particles are more or less touch. In addition to metals, initial investigations were also carried out nanocrystalline ceramics carried out, however, in the similar Effects were not found when looking at some preliminary Results that indicate an increased deformability indicated. So far, similar phenomena have occurred on composite materials not found with nanoscale structure, especially not with Composites in which the matrix phase polymer-like structures having. Although it is e.g. B. known that at interfaces between Polymers and metals due to the effect of the interface deviations occur from the continuum structure of the polymer; the Interface volumes with the usual materials are, however, too low to in any way the property profile that is more or less additively composed of the individual components, to change. In the case of conventional filled polymers, in which Interfaces between the filler particles and the polymers So far, no significant influence of the interfaces could occur be determined on the material properties. Using Up to now, nanoscale fillers (e.g. disperse silica) have been used such effects were also not determined, presumably because of the Volume fill levels used to create interfaces influences are insufficient or the interfaces are not suitable Structure or the degree of agglomeration were too high. Even with targeted investigations for the production of Nanocomposites in inorganic-organic systems in which it has been postulated that special interfaces have occurred no corresponding effects found.
Bestimmt man z. Surprisingly, materials can be provided according to the invention be from the state of the art by a very high proportion differentiate on nanoscale particles and, if necessary, also through a certain interface design a clear one Influence of the interfaces on material and material properties to have. Such materials are subject to deviations from the expected properties found only on interface phases can be returned. If you determine z. B. the expansion coefficients of certain such systems, it is found that this is reduced significantly more than by the additive Effect of matrix and filler would have to be explained. Behaves similarly it with the modulus of elasticity above Tg, which is a function the degree of filling is increased significantly non-linearly, d. H. the modulus of elasticity is at a much higher level than that of filled Polymers with similar volume fill levels is found.
Füllt man z . Similar effects will also affect the temperature of the Transformation area observed. If you fill z. B. Aramid systems with ZrO₂, the transformation area shifts from Range of 300 ° C in the range of 400 ° C, and that at Volume fill levels in the range of 10%, what with a "filling" of the Polymer matrix with inorganic filler in the usual sense is not too is to explain. Similar results were filled with SiO₂ Found methacrylate polymers or methacrylate-epoxy copolymers.
With the help of the method according to the invention it is possible to composites manufacture, whose behavior is not additive as usual by the Properties of the two components (e.g. inorganic dispersed Phase on the one hand and organic or organically modified inorganic matrix on the other hand) is determined, but by the Interface phase. Without being tied to any particular theory wanting, it is assumed that the interface phase over a Structure with a higher degree of order than the surrounding matrix. A direct structural analysis is not yet possible because it is there are no methods with which these structures in the finished composite can be precisely detected.
The present invention accordingly relates to a method for Production of composite materials with a high proportion of interfaces, where you have a nanoscale filler in a polymer matrix dispersed and that is characterized in that the matrix optionally with surface-modified filler particles Affinity for the matrix phase and a particle size of no more than 200 nm in an amount of at least 5 percent by volume that the filler particles in a substantially agglomerate-free state be distributed in the matrix phase.
Composite materials of high quality obtainable by this process Interfaces are also part of the present Invention.
The essential features of the method according to the invention are thus that in a certain minimum quantity in the matrix phase nanoscale filler particles to be incorporated have an affinity for Have matrix phase and that they are agglomerate-free in the matrix phase be distributed. This is the only way to ensure that in the Composite materials have a high proportion of interfaces, i. H. on high percentage of the matrix phase in the formation of borders area phases that differ from the rest of the matrix phase (its Structure resembles that of an unfilled matrix) in its Differentiate structure and properties. This Interface phases surround the filler particles as if they were one Cover. Your share can in organic polymers as a matrix z. B. be determined by looking at the matrix of the composite material under ambient conditions with a solvent for the Solves matrix phase as much as possible. The part of the matrix phase that can no longer be solved, represents the interface phase, i. H. the part of the matrix that is (strong) with the filler particles Interactions have occurred. With these interactions it can are both covalent bonds between the surfaces of the Groups located in the filler particles (which can also be any surface modifiers used can) and thus reactive groups in the matrix molecules as well to non-covalent interactions such as dipole-dipole Interactions and electrostatic attraction. So is under the term "affinity for the matrix phase" the ability of To understand filler particles with the molecules of the matrix phase enter into the above or similar interactions that are strong enough to provide some orientation of the matrix molecules in the immediate vicinity of the surfaces of the filler part Chen effect and at the same time for a bond or at least a strong attraction between the surface of the filler particles and the molecules of the matrix phase. That affinity between filler particles and matrix phase also ensures that the Filler particles essentially isolated from each other, i.e. H. without Formation of agglomerates from several primary particles in the Matrix phase are present. This ensures that the contact area between filler particles and matrix phase - and thus also the Interface phase - maximum effect under the given conditions.
As already mentioned above, according to the invention, surprisingly found that with agglomerate-free installation of nanoscale particles in organic or organically modified inorganic polymers Matrices a previously unknown qualitative leap in e.g. B. the can produce mechanical and thermomechanical properties, of the performance characteristics of such composite materials sustainably improved.
It is crucial that the nanoscale filler is not integrated as an agglomerated powder but in the form of a stabilized, (essentially) agglomerate-free suspension in the matrix phase and (if necessary through a suitable surface modification of the particles) the agglomerate-free state is maintained even in the final composite material. This happens e.g. B. by adjusting the polarity of the matrix and filler particles. In this way, the matrix and filler particles also enter into relatively strong interaction relationships, which lead to interface structures in the finished composite material, which are presumably responsible for the observed qualitative changes in properties. The use of mechanical forces such as e.g. B. Shear with simultaneous use of surface-modifying substances. The nanodisperse installation presumably has two effects:
On the one hand, it leads to interactions between particles and matrix, which change the matrix material at the inner interfaces with the particles and thus lead to the inner interface structure with new properties. On the other hand, the nanoscale installation means that the volume fraction of these inner interfaces in the entire composite material becomes so large due to the large surface area of the nanoparticles that the changes in properties attributable to the interfaces (areas) can also be clearly observed macroscopically.
This type of nanocomposition can be achieved e.g. B. in that either starts from naturally agglomerated powders and through Dispersion in a suitable (non-matrix) medium Agglomerates breaks permanently (e.g. using Methacrylic acid (esters)) or that one was stabilized from the start uses nanoscale suspensions (e.g. silica sols). Here too however, it is crucial that (e.g. through suitable surface modifications decoration) the agglomerate-free state in the finished composite material maintained to generate the causal chain described above realizing the new properties.
The composite materials according to the invention are particularly distinguished in that they are new due to an inner interface phase Identify mechanical and thermomechanical properties, e.g. B. one reduced coefficient of thermal expansion and an increased Temperature resistance, and their optical properties through the Nanoparticles are adjustable in a wide range; is particular it is possible to use completely transparent com to realize positive materials.

Materials that can be used according to the invention for the matrix phase any known organic and inorganic polymers are suitable Substances. DEGUSSA.The nanoscale particles have a maximum particle size of 200 nm, preferably 2 to 50 nm and in particular 5 to 20 nm. A very low coefficient of thermal expansion of 5 × 10 -7 K -1 z. B. SiO₂ particles, which have the additional advantage of a thixotropic effect when dispersed in the polymeric matrix. This thixotropic effect is probably due to the formation of a percolating framework in which the particles are in contact with one another. The viscosity-changing properties of the nanoscale particles can be adjusted by suitable surface modification. Stabilized colloidal, nanodisperse sols of inorganic particles such as, for.
