Description
Es ist bekannt, Polymere, die sich für Überzugsmassen eignen, dadurch herzustellen, daß man Mischpolymere,
in welchen Epoxydgruppen tragende Monomereinheiten vorliegen, mit Carbonsäuren verestert.
Beispielsweise beschreiben die US-PSen 2 857 354 und 3 058 947 die Umsetzung solcher Polymere
mit aliphatischen Dicarbonsäuren, wobei Materialien erhalten werden, die vernetzte Überzüge ergeben.
In der FR-PS 1341733 ist die Veresterung eines
solchen Polymeren mit einer ungesättigten aliphatischen Monocarbonsäure und die anschließende
Mischpolymerisation des Produkts mit anderen ungesättigten Monomeren beschrieben, wobei ein Pfropfmischpolymer
erhalten wird, das sich zur Beschichtung von Pigmentteilchen eignet.
Es wurde nunmehr gefunden, daß ähnliche modifizierte Mischpolymere, die sich als Dispergiermittel für
teilchenförmige Materialien in organischen Medien eignen, hergestellt werden können durch ein Verfahren
zur Herstellung modifizierter Copolymerisate, ausgehend von Copolymerisaten und Estern der
Acryl-, Methacryl- oder Äthacrylsäure und epoxydtragenden Monomeren, das dadurch gekennzeichnet
ist, daß diese Copolymerisate in Gegenwart von 0,05-0,15 Gew.%, bezogen auf das Reaktionsgemisch,
eines Alkyldimethylamins mit mindestens 8 Kohlenstoffatomen im Alkylrest als Katalysator mit
einer hydroxylsubstituierten aliphatischen Carbonsäure bei 100 bis 150° C verestert werden.
Geeignete Ester von Acryl-, Methacryl- und Äthacrylsäure sind beispielsweise langkettige Ester dieser
Säuren, wie z. B. die Stearyl-, Lauryl-, Octyl-, 2-Äthylhexyl-
und Hexylester von Acryl- oder Methacrylsäure und auch die Analogen mit kürzeren Ketten,
wie z. B. Äthoxyäthylmethacrylat, Methylmethacrylat und Äthylacrylat.
Der hier verwendete Ausdruck »Copolymere« bezieht sich sowohl auf Zufalls- als auch auf Pfropfcopolymere.
Epoxydgruppen werden in die kettenartige polymere Komponente durch Copolymerisation eines
epoxydtragenden Monomeren mit einer entsprechenden Menge von einem oder mehreren der anderen
Monomeren unter Bildung des Ausgangspolymeren eingeführt. Als Beispiel für geeignete epoxydtragende
Monomere kann man Glycidylacrylat, Glycidylmethacrylat und Allylglycidyläther erwähnen.
Die Epoxydgruppen werden mit hydroxylsubstituierten aliphatischen Carbonsäuren verestert.
Die Kohlenstoff kette der Hydroxysäure kann gerade oder verzweigt sein, und die daran angelagerte Hydroxylgruppe kann primär, sekundär oder tertiär sein. Der aliphatische Rest kann außer der daran angebunden Hydroxylgruppe noch eine oder mehrere

ίο Hydroxylgruppen enthalten. Als Beispiele für geeignete
hydroxylsubstituierte aliphatische Säuren kann man folgende erwähnen: Milchsäure, Glykolsäure,
Glukonsäure, Hyroxylvaleriansäure, 12-Hydroxystearinsäure, Dihydroxystearinsäure, Ricinolsäure,
2,3-Dihydroxybuttersäure, 3,4,5-Trihydroxyhexansäure, 2-Hydroxymethylnonansäure, 2-Hydroxy-3-methylbuttersäure,
2-Hydroxy-2,2-dipropylessigsäure und Hydroxypelargonsäure. Auch können polyhydroxysubstituierte aliphatische Säuren, wie sie
z. B. in Schellack vorkommen, z. B. Aleuritinsäure, verwendet werden.
Die erfindungsgemäß hergestellten modifizierten Copolymerisate werden als Dispergiermittel verwendet.
Ein besonderer Vorteil bei der Verwendung dieser Dispergiermittel besteht in der Verbesserung der
Eigenschaften von Dispersionen von Pigmenten, Pestiziden, Treibmitteln, Metallpulvern, festen Polymerteilchen
wie Polyvinylchlorid, Polyvinylacetat, Polyvinylidenchlorid, Polyäthylen, Polypropylen und
Polyacrylnitril und flüssigen Teilchen als unlöslichen niedrigmolekularen Polymeren. Die Teilchen können
in dem organischen Dispersionsmedium durch Mahlen, Quirlen, Emulgierung, Niederschlagen od. dgl.
dispergiert werden. Das Dispergiermittel kann dem Dispersionsmedium zugegeben werden, oder die Teilchen
können mit dem Dispergiermittel vorbehandelt werden. Ein besonderer Vorteil bei der Verwendung
der Dispergiermittel liegt in der Verbesserung der Eigenschaften von Dispersionen von Pigmenten in
Überzugsmassen und in Formteilen und stranggepreßten Teilchen aus Kunststoff.
Um dies zu erreichen, muß die Hauptpolymerkette des Dispergiermittels durch das organische Medium
der Dispersion solvatisierbar sein, das heißt also, daß das Polymer in dem Medium löslich sein muß. Hierzu
ist es im allgemeinen erforderlich, daß die Polaritäten des organischen Mediums und der Polymerkette ähnlich
sind. Wenn also beispielsweise das organische Medium ein flüssiger aliphatischer Kohlenwasserstoff
ist, dann sind geeignete Polymerketten, die durch einen solchen Kohlenwasserstoff solvatisiert werden
können, solche, die sich von langkettigen Estern der Acryl-, Methacryl- oder Äthacrylsäure ableiten, während,
wenn das organische Medium eine Flüssigkeit ist, die überwiegend aus einem aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoff
besteht, sich geeignete Polymerketten nicht nur von diesen langkettigen Estern, sondern
auch von kürzerkettigen Analogen ableiten können. Die zu verwendende Menge des Dispergiermittels
bo hängt von verschiedenen Größen, wie z. B. dem Gehalt
an disperser Phase in der Dispersion, der Teilchengröße der dispersen Phase, der Art des Ausgangsmischpolymerisats
des Dispergiermittels und der Anzahl der o. a. Gruppen, die an dieser Komponente
angebunden sind, ab und kann 0,1 bis 200 Gew.% oder mehr, bezogen auf die disperse Phase, betragen.
Die Verwendung der erfindungsgemäß hergestellten Dispergiermittel kann zu einer Vergrößerung der

in dem organischen Medium dispergierbaren Menge der dispersen Phase oder zu einer Verbesserung der
Fließeigenschaften von Dispersionen in organischen Flüssigkeiten oder zu einer Erhöhung der Dispersionsgeschwindigkeit
des Materials in dem Medium führen. Bei einer bestimmten Dispersionsart, nämlich
Dispersionen von Pigmenten in Lacken, kann die Verwendung der erfindungsgemäß hergestellten Dispersionsmittel
zu Erhöhung des Glanzes, der Farbintensität oder der Undurchsichtigkeit und zu einer
Verminderung der Farbänderung beim Lagern führen.
Wenn diese Dispergiermittel in pigmentierten Lakken verwendet werden, bei denen die Copolymerisat-Ausgangskomponente
von der flüchtigen organischen Flüssigkeit solvatisiert wird, in welcher die filmbildende Komponente des Lackes dispergiert ist,
ist es sehr wünschenswert, daß die Ausgangskomponente des Dispergiermittels mit der filmbildenden
Komponente verträglich ist, die nach Abdampfung der flüchtigen organischen Flüssigkeit im trockenen
Lack verbleibt.
Die Erfindung ist nachstehend an Hand von Ausführungsbeispielen näher erläutert, wobei alle Mengenangaben
auf das Gewicht bezogen sind.
Ein Polymerisat auf Methacrylatbasis, das in aliphatischem/aromatischem
Kohlenwasserstoff (Sdp. 155-195° C) löslich war, wurde wie folgt hergestellt:

wurde bei 86-88° C gerührt und 2 h auf dieser Temperatur gehalten. Dann wurden noch 2,68 Teile Azodiisobutyronitril hinzugegeben, worauf die Mischung noch 2 h erwärmt wurde.

Dann wurden 332 Teile des Lösungsmittels abdestilliert. Da ein wesentlicher Teil hiervon das niedrigkochende Lösungsmittel war, stieg die Rückflußtemperatur
auf etwa 130° C. Der Feststoffgehalt der Lösung betrug 45,8%.
Die im Polymerisat vorhandenen Epoxydgruppen wurden dann wie folgt verestert:

Anwendungsbeispiel 1
Dieses veresterte Polymere ist ein wirksameres Dispergiermittel als ein übliches ölreiches Alkydharz.
(Mit Leinöl modifiziertes Pentaerythritalkyd, in welchem die Molverhältnisse von Leinöl zu Pentaerythrit
zu Phthalsäureanhydrid 1 : 1,05 : 1,095 betragen und welches einen Säurewert von 10 bis 15 mg KOH/g
aufweist.) Beispielsweise läßt sich 43% mehr eines gelben Monoazofarbstoffpigments in der organischen
Flüssigkeit, die das beschriebene modifizierte Copolymere enthält, als in einer organischen Flüssigkeit,
die eine entsprechende Menge eines ölreichen Alkydharzes enthält, dispergieren.
Ein weiteres Polymerisat auf Methacrylatbasis, das

(Sdp. 160-200° C) löslich war, wurde wie folgt hergestellt:

18 Teilen Glycidylmethacrylat zugegeben. Dann wurde diese Mischung tropfenweise
während 90 min zu einer ständig gerührten, unter Rückfluß kochenden Mischung der folgenden Lösungsmittel
315 Teilen Kohlenwasserstoff (wie oben angegeben) 435 Teilen aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoff
(Sdp. 98-122° C)
zugegeben. Dann wurde die gesamte Mischung noch 3 h bei etwa 100° C gerührt.
jo Es wurden dann 405 Teile Lösungsmittel abdestilliert,
so daß die Rückflußtemperatur auf etwa 130° C stieg. Der Feststoff gehalt der Lösung betrug 55%.
Die im Polymerisat vorhandenen Epoxydgruppen wurden dann verestert, indem 1000 Teile der Polymerisatlösung
(Feststoffgehalt 55%) mit 4,55 Teilen Milchsäure (Reinheit 75%, Rest: Wasser) und 1 Teil
Dimethyldodecyl-tert.-amin vermischt wurden und die entstehende Mischung so lange bei 110-120° C
gerührt wurde, bis die Säurezahl unter 0,2 betrug.
Anwendungsbeispiel 2
Bei der Herstellung einer Dispersion von Rebschwarzpigment durch Mahlen desselben in eiaer Kugelmühle
mit Lackbenzin, das 30% eines ölreichen Alkydharzes (wie im Anwendungsbeispiel 1) enthielt,
erhielt man keine einwandfreie Dispersion mehr, wenn die Menge des Pigments mehr als 11 Vol.% der
Dispersion betrug. Bei einem zweiten Versuch enthielt die organische Flüssigkeit lediglich 15% des beschriebenen
veresterten Polymeren, wobei bis zu 13,5 Vol.% des Rebschwarzpigments - bezogen auf die
Dispersion — einwandfei dispergiert werden konnten.

80000 enthielt.
Dann wurden etwa 12% der Epoxydgruppen des Copolymerisats mit Gluconsäure verestert, indem die
folgende Mischung so lange unter Rückfluß erwärmt

Man konnte 62 % mehr Rebschwarzpigment in einem 70 : 30-Gemisch aus Toluol und Methylisobutylketon,
das 15% des in Beispiel 3 beschriebenen Dispergiermittels enthielt, dispergieren als in der
organischen Flüssigkeit, wenn diese 20% des üblichen 98 : 2-Methylmethacrylat-Methacrylsäure-Copolymerisats
enthielt.
Es wurde ein 97 : 3-Methylmethacrylat-Glycidylmethacrylat-Copolymerisat
nach dem Verfahren gemäß Beispiel 3 dargestellt, wobei das Copolymerisat aber nicht mit Gluconsäure, sondern mit einer entsprechenden
Menge von 12-Hydroxystearinsäure verestert wurde.
Anwendungsbeispiel 4
Bei der Herstellung einer Dispersion von Rebschwarzpigment durch Mahlen desselben in einer Kugelmühle
mit einem 70 : 30-Gemisch aus Toluol und Methylisobutylketon, das 20% eines 98 : 2-Methylmethacrylat-Methacrylsäure-Copolymerisats
enthielt, erhielt man keine einwandfreie Dispersion mehr, wenn die Menge des Pigments mehr als 6,1
Vol. % der Dispersion betrug. Bei einem zweiten Versuch enthielt die organische Flüssigkeit 20% des beschriebenen
Dispergiermittels gemäß Beispiel 4, wobei bis zu 9,9 Vol.% des Pigments - bezogen auf die
Dispersion-einwandfrei dispergiert werden konnten.
Bei einem ähnlichen Dispergiermittel, das durch Reaktion des 97 : 3-Methylmethacrylat-Glycidylmethacrylat-Copolymerisats
mit einer entsprechenden Menge von Stearinsäure statt 12-Hydroxystearinsäure hergestellt wurde, und das in derselben Menge
zu der organischen Flüssigkeit zugesetzt wurde, konnte man lediglich 7,0 Vol.% des Rebschwarzpigments
einwandfrei dispergieren.
Es wurde ein 97 : 3-Methylmethacrylat-Glycidylmethacrylat-Copolymerisat
nach dem Verfahren gemäß Beispiel 3 dargestellt, wobei das Copolymerisat aber nicht mit Gluconsäure, sondern mit einer entsprechenden
Menge von Glykolsäure verestert wurde. Eine weitere Probe desselben Copolymerisats wurde
mit einer entsprechenden Menge von Essigsäure verestert.
Anwendungsbeispiel 5
Bei der Herstellung einer Dispersion von Rebschwarzpigment durch Mahlen desselben in einer Kugelmühle
mit einem 70 : 30-Gemisch aus Toluol/Methylisobutylketon,
das 20% des mit Essigsäure modifizierten Copolymeren enthielt, erhielt man keine einwandfreie Dispersion mehr, wenn die Menge
des Pigments mehr als 6,7 Vol.% der Dispersion betrug. Bei dem zweiten Versuch enthielt die organische
Flüssigkeit 20% des mit Glykolsäure modifizierten Copolymeren, wobei bis zu 10,1 Vol.% des Rebschwarzpigments
- bezogen auf die Dispersion - einwandfrei dispergiert werden konnten.
Anwendungsbeispiel 6
ίο Es wurde ein Methylmethacrylat-Glycidylmethacrylat-Copolymerisat
nach dem Verfahren gemäß Beispiel 3 hergestellt und dann wie folgt mit Schellack
zur Reaktion gebracht.
Es wurden 7 Teile wachsfreien Schellacks in 26 Teilen
Methanol bei gelinder Erwärmung gelöst und dann zu einer Mischung aus
896 Teilen Copolymerisatlösung 70 Teilen Methylisobutylketon 1 Teil Dimethyldodecyl-tert.-amin unter Rühren zugegeben. Die Temperatur der Mischung wurde allmählich auf 105° C gebracht, wobei das Methanol zum größten Teil abdampft. Die Mischung wurde dann so lange auf 105-107 ° C gehalten, bis eine 10-g-Probe mit weniger als 0,2 ml einer n/._ 10-KOH-Lösung an Hand von Phenolphthalein neutralisiert werden konnte. Als Produkt erhielt man eine Lösung mit einem Feststoff gehalt von etwa 40%.
896 Teilen Copolymerisatlösung 70 Teilen Methylisobutylketon 1 Teil Dimethyldodecyl-tert.-amin unter Rühren zugegeben. Die Temperatur der Mischung wurde allmählich auf 105° C gebracht, wobei das Methanol zum größten Teil abdampft. Die Mischung wurde dann so lange auf 105-107 ° C gehalten, bis eine 10-g-Probe mit weniger als 0,2 ml einer n/._ 10-KOH-Lösung an Hand von Phenolphthalein neutralisiert werden konnte. Als Produkt erhielt man eine Lösung mit einem Feststoff gehalt von etwa 40%.
Dispersionen eines blauen Pigments (C. I. Pigment Blue 15) in diesem Produkt waren wesentlich beständiger
gegen Ausflockung als ähnliche Dispersionen in Polymethylmethacrylatlösung, wie dies sich an verdünnten
Dispersionen bei Untersuchungen mit dem Mikroskop feststellen ließ. Bei Mischungen von Dispersionen
von Titandioxyd bzw. C. I. Pigment Blue 15 in dem beschriebenen Dispergiermittel konnte man
nur eine geringe Trennung der Pigmente nach langen Lagerzeiten in Glasrohren feststellen. Pastellblaue
Anstrichfarben aus Mischungen von Titandioxyd- und C. I. Pigment Blue 15-Dispersionen in den Dispergiermitteln
ergaben eine sehr gute Farbentwicklung, wenn sie unter niedriger Scherspannung aufgetragen
wurden. Diese Farbe des Anstrichstoffs wurde bei Erhöhung der Auftragsscherspannung kaum verändert.
Die in den Beispielen beschriebenen Dispersionen veranschaulichen die Verwendungsmöglichkeiten und
Vorteile einer Auswahl der Dispergiermittel nach der Erfindung, die natürlich in Dispersionen von anderen
Stoffen außer den beispielsweise angeführten Pigmenten Verwendung finden können.
Pigmentdispersionen, wie sie oben beispielsweise beschrieben sind, haben besondere Vorteile bei Überzugsmassen,
und, wie eingangs erwähnt, kommen sie am besten zur Geltung, wenn das Dispergiermittel mit
dem filmbildenden Stoff der trockenen Überzugsmasse verträglich ist. Der nachstehenden Tabelle sind
geeignete Anstrichstoffe bzw. Lacke zu entnehmen:

Claims (2)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung modifizierter Copolymerisate, ausgehend von Copolymerisaten
aus Estern der Acryl-, Methacryl- oder Äthacrylsäure und epoxydtragenden Monomeren, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß diese Copolymerisate in Gegenwart von 0,05-0,15 Gew.%,
bezogen auf das Reaktionsgemisch, eines Alkyldimethylamins mit mindestens 8 Kohlenstoffatomen
im Alkylrest als Katalysator mit einer hydroxylsubstituierten aliphatischen Carbonsäure bei
100-150° C verestert werden.
2. Verwendung der nach Anspruch 1 erhaltenen modifizierten Copolymerisate zur Herstellung
von Dispersionen von Teilchen in organischen Medien.
