The present invention relates to a bath for chemical polishing of cadmium surfaces, which consists of an aqueous solution containing nitric acid. The invention also relates to a polishing process using this bath.
The term "cadmium surfaces" as used here refers to surfaces of objects made of cadmium and cadmium alloys and other metallic objects, which have a coating of cadmium, for example produced by electroplating.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a bath and method for chemical brightening of To create cadmium surfaces that are quick and relatively uncritical while providing greater uniformity the working and the appearance of the treated surface is made possible.
The present invention is also intended to provide a bath and a method for polishing cadmium surfaces can be created by a simple, one-step treatment, which is for the cadmium surfaces offers moderate protection against corrosion and tarnishing.
In addition, the invention aims to create a bath and method for shining cadmium surfaces, in which the rinsing of the workpiece after the action of the polishing bath is relatively uncritical, while appealing, uniform polished workpieces with minimal scrap are created.
The above aims are achieved by a bath for chemical polishing of cadmium surfaces, which consists of an aqueous solution containing nitric acid and is characterized by that besides nitrate ions there are trivalent chromium ions, also fluoride ions or the combination of fluoride ion and sulfate ion and has a pH of about 1.0 to 3.5. Preferably the pH is 1.5 to 2.0 for short dips of up to 10 seconds and 1.8 to 3.5 for dips up to 1 minute or more. The procedure for shining cadmium surfaces using the polishing bath according to the invention is characterized in that the bath is at a temperature used between about 7 and 66 ° C.

For baths with a higher pH value of the order of magnitude 2.0 to 3.5, a higher concentration of hexavalent chromium can be permitted, even if the amount is still relatively small and less than 0.3 g / liter. The bath itself is non-oxidizing with regard to the trivalent chromium, so that only impurities in the components or such impurities need to be taken into account which are carried into the bath on the workpieces. The baths according to the invention are therefore essentially free of hexavalent chromium ions.
In general, the bath should have trivalent chromium ions in the range from 0.08 to 1.0 g / liter, nitrate ions in the range from about 0.1 to 18.0 g / liter and fluoride ions or combined fluoride and sulfate ions in the range 0.4 contain up to 5.2 g / liter.
The solutions according to the invention preferably contain both sulfate and fluoride ions because it has been found that solutions which contain both ions have a noticeable effect on the cadmium surface Provide protection against corrosion from vapors and moisture. In general, the fluoride ion concentration should be in such solutions are about a third of that of the sulfate ion and in the range of about 0.1 to 1.2 g / liter and the sulfate

ionenkonzentration bei etwa 0,25 bis 4,0 g/Liter liegen.ion concentration are about 0.25 to 4.0 g / liter.
It was also found that the initial presence of zinc and / or cadmium ions in the bath is desirable in order to control the effect of the bath on the cadmium surface and to ensure uniformity To create shine. These metal ions are preferably added while in the form of sulfate nitric acid creates the desired pH value and introduces insignificant ions is limited. If such ions are incorporated, they should generally be in the amount of about 0.1 to 3.0 g / liter be present.
The bath according to the invention is preferably used at ambient temperatures of the order of about 15 to 32 ° C. for optimum operation. However, depending on the bath concentration and the duration of the treatment, temperatures of around 7 to 66 C C can be used. In general, the more diluted the bath, the higher the temperature which can be used to create a satisfactory treatment time and gloss effect.
The treatment time changes with the temperature, the pH value and the bath concentration. In general the immersion time varies between about 2 seconds and 10 minutes depending on these three factors. The optimal treatment time for a given bath concentration, temperature and a given pH is best determined by visual observation of a sample workpiece. In general, the preferred baths of the invention require those at ambient temperatures work, an immersion time of only about 5 to 45 seconds.
After being immersed in the bath according to the invention, the cadmium workpieces are placed in cold water and then rinsed in hot water for drying.
The preferred baths contain about 0.2 to 0.3 g / liter of trivalent chromium ions, 3.75 to 5.0 g / liter Nitrate ions, 0.2 to 0.4 gaiter fluoride ions and 0.75 to 1.5 g / liter of sulfate ions, with the bath having a pH of about 1.5 to 2.0, and essentially is free from δ-valent chromium ions. For control and for an optimal gloss effect too At the beginning of use, an additional 0.5 to 1.0 g / liter of zinc or cadmium ions is desirable. Such a bath composition brings a very desirable gloss and a moderate one Protection of the cadmium surface at ambient temperatures and 5 to 45 seconds immersion time emerged.
In general, the bath is made by adding nitric acid and suitable salts of the various other ions into water. The introduction of unnecessary ions is expediently avoided, because this can cause impairment.
Because of the degree of acidity and the corrosion properties of the baths according to the invention, these should be avoided Containers suitable for contamination, such as rigid polyvinyl chloride, can be used Polyvinyl chloride or resin-bonded fiberglass or polyethylene-lined steel.
From time to time the bathroom needs to be freshened up by adding the individual components Concentration is reduced by discharge and reaction. This can be done in general visual observation of the lower gloss of the workpieces can be determined. The generally an addition of half of the original preparation quantities used, if one such visual degradation is observed. Of course, the pH should be within the specified range Limits are kept. Analytically, the bath can be titrated with 1 η sodium hydroxide solution, ίο using phenolphthalein as an indicator. A few examples are now given, according to which workpieces coated with cadmium are treated.
A cadmium gloss bath is prepared by adding nitric acid (42 ° Baume) and a Salt mixture of 7.12 percent by weight acidic sodium fluoride, 21.25 percent by weight chromium fluoride and adding 71.63 weight percent zinc sulfate. The nitric acid and the salt mixture are im Ratio of 1.9 liters or 0.91 kg per 379 liters of water added. The resulting bath owns has a pH of about 1.8 and is maintained at a temperature of about 23.9 ° C.
Steel test plates clad with cadmium to a thickness of about 0.00508 mm and measuring 38.1 X 31.75 mm are immersed in the bath for 10 seconds, 3 seconds Rinsed in hot water (82.2 ° C) and air dried. It was observed that the treated Panels have a glossy surface finish of uniform gloss and much more glossy than untreated control plate samples.
Samples are used to measure the protection afforded by the treatment Subjected to humidity test at which it was 100% humidity at a temperature of 37.8 ° C for 48 hours. At the end of this exposure there is no staining or the formation of dark spots can be seen, which is indicative of a moderate protection, which by the treatment according to the invention is provided.
According to Example 1, a bath is prepared and kept at a temperature of about 26.7 ° C. Test samples, similar to those used in Example 1, are placed in the bath for about 8 seconds dipped, rinsed in cold, then hot water, and allowed to air dry. The resulting Panels have a uniform gloss that is much stronger than an untreated control panel.
One of the tests used in industry to assess protection is: that one applies a drop of a 1.0 weight percent lead acetate solution to the treated part and determines the time in which the spot turns black. An untreated sample is immediately black. When treated panels are tested, the area will turn gray in approximately 5 to 10 seconds and it is followed by dark to complete black at the end of about 50 to 60 seconds. It can be seen that the treatment, in addition to high gloss of the cadmium surface, moderates the surface Has granted protection.
