Abstract
357,887. Electroplating. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Ncal, C. T. ; 3rd National Bank Building, Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Dec. 23, 1930, No. 38758. [Class 41.] Cadmium-plated articles are given a lustrous surface by subjecting them after withdrawal from the electrolytic bath without drying to the action of an extremely dilute aqueous solution of nitric acid. The articles may be dipped in the brightening bath immediately or they may be allowed to stand in the electrolytic bath with the current turned off or in cold water. Preferably they are washed in cold water so as to remove part but not all of the adherent alkaline electrolyte. The brightening bath preferably consists of a solution of 1 oz. commercial nitric acid (s.g. 1.355) to 1 gallon of water. The period of immersion should be 5-15 seconds. After treatment the articles are rinsed and dried. Cadmium surfaces which have become dull are subjected to a momentary further plating and then treated as above.
