The invention relates to a method for controlling an injection quantity of fuel into respective cylinders of a common rail internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle. The common rail internal combustion engine includes common rail injection as an injection system, which is also referred to as storage injection. The fuel is brought to a high pressure level using a high-pressure pump. This means that the pressure of the fuel is built up in the distributor pipe using the high-pressure pump. The pressurized fuel fills a piping system that is constantly under pressure when the engine is running. In the common rail internal combustion engine, a common high-pressure fuel reservoir is used, in particular in the form of a distributor pipe, to which injection nozzles or injection valves, which are also referred to as injectors, are connected to supply the cylinders with fuel. The injection timing and quantity are regulated by an electronic engine control system. This electronic engine control electrically actuates the respective injection valves for each cylinder.
In the method for controlling the injection quantity, a forecast for a pressure curve from a defined injection start time is determined based on a measured pressure of the fuel in the common distributor pipe of the internal combustion engine and based on a determined suction or pressure phase, hence the working phase, of the high-pressure pump. This means that the injection start time is specified and the forecast is created for a time interval from this injection start time, which describes how the pressure in the common distributor pipe will most likely behave over the time interval. Pumps with a finite number of displacement elements, such as pistons, vanes or teeth, deliver a volume flow that fluctuates around an average value due to the periodic change between suction and pressure phases. A respective change between suction phases and pressure phases of the high-pressure pump can lead to a delivery flow pulsation and, as a result, to a pressure pulsation in the distributor pipe. This means that a delivery stroke of the high-pressure pump causes a pressure pulsation in the distributor pipe. This pressure pulsation leads to volume flows of fuel flowing through the injection valve that vary over time. This pressure pulsation therefore influences an actual injection quantity, particularly if the opening duration of the injection valves is fixed. Based on the currently measured pressure and the determined working phase of the high-pressure pump, the forecast can be created particularly well, which estimates the pressure curve in the distribution pipe over the time interval.
In the method it is further provided that at the defined injection start time at least one injection valve is opened, via which fuel flows from the distributor pipe into at least one cylinder. Furthermore, it is provided in the method that in order to adjust the injection quantity of fuel, an opening duration of the injection valve is selected depending on the forecast for the pressure curve and a predetermined target injection quantity. This target injection quantity can be stored in a memory device of a control device, in particular a control device that is set up to carry out the method. The opening duration is thus adjusted in such a way that the predetermined target injection quantity is injected into the assigned cylinder via the injection valve. Since a mass flow or a volume flow of the fuel which flows into the cylinder via the injection valve also varies when the pressure in the distributor pipe varies, in the method the opening duration of the injection valve is adjusted in such a way that the predetermined target injection quantity via the injection valve over this opening duration flows into the assigned cylinder. In the method, a forecast is created for the pressure curve in the distributor pipe from an opening time of the injection valve, namely the defined injection start time, and the opening duration of the injection valve is adjusted depending on the forecast in order to achieve the predetermined target injection quantity. By adjusting the opening duration of the injection valve depending on the estimated pressure curve in the distributor pipe, a particularly precise adjustment of the injection quantity of fuel into respective cylinders of the internal combustion engine is made possible.
In a possible development of the invention it is provided that the high-pressure pump is driven by means of a crankshaft. Furthermore, it is provided that the suction or pressure phase of the high-pressure pump is determined based on an angular position of the crankshaft and a stored relationship between the angular position of the crankshaft and the suction or pressure phase of the high-pressure pump. In other words, the high-pressure pump is mechanically coupled to the crankshaft, whereby the high-pressure pump is driven when the crankshaft rotates. The respective working phases of the high-pressure pump therefore depend on the angular position of the crankshaft. The working phase of the high-pressure pump can therefore be determined via the angular position of the crankshaft. The angular position of the crankshaft can be determined, for example, using a sensor. The relationship describes which working phases of the high-pressure pump exist at which angular positions of the crankshaft. There may be target specifications that describe which working phases of the high-pressure pump should ideally occur at the respective angular positions of the crankshaft. Due to component tolerances of the high-pressure pump or the crankshaft, a real connection between the angular position of the crankshaft and the respective working phase of the high-pressure pump can deviate from these target specifications. This relationship can therefore describe an offset factor of the angular position of the crankshaft in relation to the respective working phase of the high-pressure pump. This offset factor describes an offset between the angular position of the crankshaft and the working phase of the high-pressure pump in relation to defined target specifications. If the target specifications are met, then there is a zero deviation from the specified dimensions and thus an offset or an offset factor of zero. The context would then reflect the defined target specifications. The offset factor can vary from vehicle to vehicle due to respective component tolerances.
Furthermore, the offset factor can change over the lifespan of the common rail internal combustion engine, for example due to component wear.
In the method it is provided that a forecast for the pressure curve in the common distributor pipe is determined from the defined injection start time on the basis of the measured pressure in the distributor pipe and the determined working phase of the high-pressure pump, the working phase of the high-pressure pump in turn being determined via the angular position of the crankshaft and the stored connection is determined. The offset factor is taken into account in this context. The context in which the offset factor is taken into account thus enables a particularly precise determination of the respective working phase of the high-pressure pump and, as a result, a particularly precise creation of the forecast for the pressure curve from the defined injection start time.
In a further possible embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the relationship is determined and/or checked several times over the operation of the high-pressure pump and/or several times over the service life of the motor vehicle. This means that the connection is determined and/or checked several times from starting the high-pressure pump to switching off the high-pressure pump, or the connection is checked several times is determined and/or checked over the service life of the high-pressure pump. When checking the connection several times over the service life of the high-pressure pump, the connection can be determined and/or checked once or several times during operation of the high-pressure pump. In particular, it is provided that the stored context is adjusted depending on a result of the review. For example, the stored relationship can be checked based on a real, measured pressure curve over the time interval starting from the injection start time as part of a comparison with the predicted pressure curve. By determining or checking the relationship several times, it can be ensured that if the offset factor changes over the service life of the common rail internal combustion engine, the stored relationship particularly well represents the real relationship between the angular position of the crankshaft and the working phase of the high-pressure pump. This allows the injection quantity to be set particularly precisely by adjusting the opening duration of the injection valve.
In a further possible embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the connection is determined and/or checked in a specific operating state of the high-pressure pump. This means that the connection is determined and/or checked in a defined partial load state or in the full load state of the high-pressure pump. In particular, there may be operating states of the high-pressure pump in which the connection can be determined particularly easily and/or particularly precisely. The operating state of the high-pressure pump is thus determined in which the connection can be determined particularly easily and/or precisely and, as a result, the connection is determined and/or checked in this operating state of the high-pressure pump. This ensures that the connection is determined particularly easily and with particularly high precision. In particular, for multiple determination of the connection, it is advantageous if the connection can be determined particularly easily.
In a further possible embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the connection is checked as soon as the high-pressure pump is operated in the specific operating state. This means that the process continuously checks the operating state in which the high-pressure pump is. As soon as it is determined that the high-pressure pump is in the specific operating state in which the connection can be determined particularly easily and/or particularly precisely, the connection is determined and checked. In other words, every time the high-pressure pump is operated in this specific operating state, the connection is determined and checked. This makes it possible to determine the relationship repeatedly over the operation of the high-pressure pump or over the service life of the high-pressure pump particularly easily and with particularly high precision.
In a further possible embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the target injection quantity is specified depending on an emission specification for the internal combustion engine. The emission specification describes in particular the respective limit values for substances in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. For example, the emission specifications can describe how high a nitrogen oxide content can be in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. In the method, the target injection quantity is specified in such a way that when the fuel is burned in the internal combustion engine, a resulting proportion of nitrogen oxides is below the limit value specified in the emission specification. By specifying the target injection quantity and the particularly precise control of the injection quantity within the framework of the method, so that the real injection quantity is particularly close to the target injection quantity, respective emission specifications for the internal combustion engine can be met particularly well. As a result, any environmental impact caused by the internal combustion engine can be kept particularly low.
The invention further relates to a control device for a motor vehicle, which is set up to determine an injection quantity of fuel into respective cylinders of a common rail internal combustion engine as part of a method as has already been described in connection with the method according to the invention for controlling the injection quantity , to carry out. This means that the control unit is set up to determine the forecast for the pressure curve from the defined injection start time on the basis of a measured pressure of the fuel in the common distributor pipe of the internal combustion engine and a determined suction or pressure phase of the high-pressure pump. Furthermore, the control unit is set up to trigger the opening of the injection valve at the defined injection start time. In addition, the control unit is set up to select an opening duration of the injection valve depending on the forecast for the pressure curve and a predetermined target injection quantity in order to adjust the injection quantity of fuel. This means that the control unit is set up to specify the opening duration of the injection valve. In the method it is provided that in a first method step V1 a forecast for a pressure curve in the common distributor pipe is made based on a measured pressure of the fuel in the common distributor pipe of the internal combustion engine and based on a determined working phase, in particular a suction or pressure phase, of the high-pressure pump is determined at a defined injection start time. As part of the forecast, it is estimated how the pressure in the common distributor pipe is likely to behave from the defined injection start time.
The high-pressure pump is designed to build up the pressure of the fuel in the distributor pipe. The pressure or the pressure curve in the common distributor pipe influences how much fuel flows into the respective combustion chamber of the common rail internal combustion engine when the injection valve is open. The high-pressure pump is driven by a crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. The respective working phase of the high-pressure pump can thus be determined based on an angular position of the crankshaft and based on a stored relationship between the angular position of the crankshaft and the working phase of the high-pressure pump. This relationship can differ from motor vehicle to motor vehicle due to component tolerances between the high-pressure pump and the crankshaft or can change over the lifespan of the internal combustion engine. In order to enable precise control of the fuel injection quantity over the entire service life, it is therefore provided that the relationship is determined and checked several times over the operation of the high-pressure pump or several times over the service life of the high-pressure pump. This operation of the high-pressure pump describes a time interval from starting the high-pressure pump to stopping the high-pressure pump. The connection can be learned in particular in selected operating states of the high-pressure pump. This means that the connection is determined and checked in a specific operating state of the high-pressure pump. The connection is checked as soon as it is determined that the high-pressure pump is being operated in the specific operating state.
Certain operating states of the high-pressure pump vary in their suitability for determining an offset factor. The offset factor describes a deviation between a target correlation of the working phase of the high-pressure pump to the angular position of the crankshaft and an actual correlation. The offset factor is therefore always determined in a well-suited operating condition. This determined offset factor is the high pressure for all operating states pump is the same and therefore independent of the respective operating status of the high-pressure pump. Only the simplicity or precision of determining the offset factor can vary across different operating states. The offset factor is used to determine the relationship between the working phase of the high-pressure pump and the angular position of the crankshaft. The connection therefore depends on the offset factor.
In a second method step V2 of the method, it is provided that at the defined injection start time, an injection valve of the common rail internal combustion engine is opened, via which fuel flows from the common distributor pipe into at least one cylinder. The opening of the injection valve can be triggered by an engine control, which is a control unit for the motor vehicle. In particular, the engine control is digital engine electronics.
In a third method step V3 it is provided that in order to adjust the injection quantity of fuel, an opening duration of the injection valve is selected depending on the forecast for the pressure curve and depending on a predetermined target injection quantity. Here, the target injection quantity is specified in particular as a function of an emissions specification for the internal combustion engine. The target injection quantity is additionally specified in particular depending on a torque requirement of the internal combustion engine.
The method described is based on the knowledge that a delivery stroke of the high-pressure pump causes a pressure pulsation in the common distributor pipe, which can influence an actual injection quantity depending on the mechanically adjusted phase position between the high-pressure pump and the crankshaft. This quantitative inaccuracy can lead to a deterioration in the emissions capability of the internal combustion engine. The mechanical phase position of the high-pressure pump in relation to the angular position of the crankshaft is subject to tolerances over a long dimensional chain, so that an offset factor can arise between the working phase of the high-pressure pump and the angular position of the crankshaft. This offset factor can change during operation, for example due to chain wear over the service life of the internal combustion engine.
The actual phase position of the high-pressure pump during operation can be learned via a pressure sensor in the common distributor pipe and via an angle sensor on the crankshaft, in particular in selected operating states of the high-pressure pump. This allows quantity corrections to be calculated that increase injection accuracy and enable emissions to be improved.
Overall, the invention shows how an increase in the quantity accuracy of an injection quantity for common rail engines can be achieved.
