Abstract
The supply of mussels (bivalvia) with food that is suspended in the water is ineffective and leads to water pollution. It is known to force-feed the mussels through a hole in their shell flaps. According to the invention, a non-invasive solution is proposed in which the supply opening (14) of the supply pipe (13) is arranged near the mussel (02) in the area of its inhalation flow (10), the shell flaps (08) not being touched. The mussels (02) are preferably fixed in a framework (05); pipettes (16) with the supply openings (14) are preferably arranged in front of them. Either the mussels (02) can be conditioned for feeding or touching or non-contact sensors (21) are provided, the signals of which are used to actuate metering valves (25) when the mussel (02) is open. The dosage depends above all on the size of the mussel (02) and on the strength of the inhalation flow (10) and the water flow (11). A very efficient supply of the mussels (02) is achieved, which is suitable for both breeding and nutrition and conserves resources and enables aquaculture facilities to be established even in water-sensitive areas.
Description
The invention relates to a device for supplying at least one mussel in an aquaculture with a water flow, the mussel having two shell flaps which can be opened at an opening angle and generating an inhalation flow, with a fixation device and a supply pipe for each individual mussel, the supply pipe having a the shell facing supply opening and a remote connection opening which is connected to a supply unit for providing supply material.
Mussels are traded fresh, frozen or preserved as valuable food, whereby mussels from land or water-based aquaculture are increasingly being harvested. In addition, marine and freshwater mussel species are raised and reproduced in aquaculture for nature conservation projects and presented in public exhibitions (aquariums). The present invention is concerned with the rearing of bivalve clams (scientifically called bivalvia). They form a class of molluscs and have a shell consisting of two calcareous flaps. The shell flaps are connected to one another by an elastic lock strap (ligament) and are actively pulled together by two sphincters. All over the world, mussels live in salt water (80%), brackish water and fresh water. Depending on the species, they can be between a few millimeters up to a meter and more. Native mussel species are in particular mussels, oysters, clams and scallops, which are a few centimeters in size. Most mussels live (in a horizontal or vertical orientation) sessile on the bottom of the water. They are attached to it or lie freely on it, so that they can move a little in the sediment. Most mussel species feed on plankton, which they filter with their gills from the inhalation stream sucked in through a breathing opening and convey it in a slime package to the internal mouth opening. The gills serve to supply the mussel with oxygen (“breathe”) as well as with food (“eat”). In order to transport more water (and thus more food and oxygen) into their interior, the mussels can also open their shell flaps, whereby the opening angle is formed between the shell flaps. The opened mussel can filter larger amounts of water. The species-appropriate and efficient supply of mussels is one of the main tasks in aquaculture.
Especially during the spawning season, mussels have to be supplied with large amounts of food because they invest large amounts of energy in the production of gametes. However, this process is usually not optimized in aquaculture. The algae fed to the animals, the production of which is a labor-intensive and cost-intensive process, are suspended in the flowing water. However, a large part of the mussels is not used, which leads to food waste and water pollution. Individualization of the supply to the individual mussel is therefore advantageous. The term “care” includes both the feeding and care of adult mussels and the reproduction and rearing of offspring. When the term “mussel” is used in the following, it usually means a large number of animals of a specific species, with each individual animal being treated accordingly. Likewise, when specifying parameters, for example the size, it is not the size of a single individual but the average size of the species that is meant. However, the provision of an individual animal, for example a giant clam in its own aquarium, for example for display purposes, should also be included.

AufgabenstellungTask
Based on the known device for supplying mussels according to the closest prior art described above, the object of the present invention is to develop the generic device so that an improved supply of the mussels with supply materials can take place without the mussels invasively affect. At the same time, the device should be able to be implemented as simply and inexpensively as possible. The use of the supplied supply material should be optimized and the water pollution with unused supply material minimized. The solution to this problem can be found in the main claim. Advantageous modifications of the invention are shown in the subclaims and explained in more detail below together with the invention.
According to the invention, the generic device for supplying live mussels in aquaculture provides that the supply opening of the supply pipe is arranged directly in front of the mussel in the area of the inhalation flow, the distance between the supply opening and the mussel being dependent on the size of the mussel and the strength of the inhalation flow and the water flow. The term “direct” means that there are no other “means” (objects, obstacles, long distances) between the supply opening and the mussel, so that a direct alignment and delivery of the supply to the mussel is guaranteed. An arrangement of the supply opening in front of the mussel as close as possible is therefore advantageous, the mussel itself not being touched, but no or only very little supply material between the supply opening and the mussel being able to be displaced by the water flow in aquaculture. The relative (local) arrangement of the supply opening to the mussel or the mussel in front of the supply opening depends in turn on the respective species, i.e. at which point of the respective mussel the inhalation flow is sucked into the interior. In the invention, an individual supply of each individual mussel is carried out without having an invasive effect on it, in particular no shell flap is pierced. This not only protects the mussel but also simplifies the supply process, in particular the preparation for implementation. So that the immediate supply of each mussel is reliably guaranteed, the supply opening is positioned in the area of its inhalation flow. It has already been stated above that mussels supply themselves with both oxygen and food through their inhalation flow. The supply substances released into the aquaculture water with the claimed device thus reach the interior of the mussel directly with the inhaled flow. The inhalation flow is sucked in by the mussel into the area between the shell flaps and its tissue and filtered from there through the gills.
The device according to the invention can bring about a significant reduction in the amount of feed required (or other products such as supplements or medicaments) which is necessary for the conditioning of mussel fry and the growth of young mussels. At the same time, a reduction in the corresponding costs is achieved. Furthermore, the waste products in the water after feeding can be reduced, which reduces the environmental impact. At the same time, higher water recirculation rates can be achieved. This can enable the development of mussel hatcheries and breeding facilities in arid and pollution-sensitive areas. Due to these serious advantages, the system claimed by the invention is suitable both for the production of filter feeders in the form of mussels and fish larvae and for their rearing. But a scientific application is also possible, in which the efficiency of the feed conversion by filter eaters is examined.
The distance between the supply opening and the mussel in the area of its inspiratory flow depends on the size of the mussel (i.e. the mussel species, not the individual size, which varies within a species only to a limited extent), the strength of its inhalation flow (which in turn depends on the mussel species to be supplied) and the water flow in the aquaculture. The last-mentioned parameter is a system parameter that can be easily regulated in terms of flow. Of course, the strength of the current selected also depends on the mussel species, but also, among other things, on the number and density of the supplying mussels in a basin. The supply opening can advantageously and preferably be arranged at a distance between 5 mm and 50 mm in front of the mussel. In particular, however, it can also be larger and be 75 mm or 100 mm. This depends on the size of the mussel species used, for example the distance can be less than 10 mm for oysters Ostrea edulis, for giant mussels Tridacna sp. at 50 mm or above. Varieties that are too small are not likely to be supplied, since an individual assignment of each mussel to its own supply pipe is technically too complex. In the case of larger or gigantic mussels, the stressed individual care is particularly advantageous.
If each mussel is supplied individually, instead of the supplied supplies being suspended in the entire volume of water, correspondingly fewer supplies are required. This can be both food, in particular algae, and additives, for example food supplements or medicines. A reduction in the amount of algae required, in particular, means lower investments in algae production, which leads to financial gains. Furthermore, the amount of direct (unused) and indirect (excreted by the mussel) waste products is also reduced, whereby the associated environmental problems can also be reduced. This enables a higher water return rate to be achieved in closed or partially closed aquaculture facilities. Cleaner water also requires less cleaning effort, which in turn is cost-effective. These advantages are of particular importance for the establishment of systems in areas with limited or sensitive water supplies. Flow systems are then also possible here.
According to a further embodiment of the device claimed by the invention, it is preferred and advantageous if the supply opening is formed by the opening of a pipette made of plastic or glass which is inserted into the supply pipe. The size and position of the supply opening is precisely defined by the pipette. It can also be easily removed and cleaned or replaced.
Furthermore, the supply pipe can advantageously and preferably have a return pipe to the supply unit. A circulatory system can be built up via the supply source through the return pipe. In particular, the feed can be kept in constant circulation. At, for example, it can be illuminated so that algae develop particularly well as animal feed. Furthermore, it is preferred and advantageous if the supply pipe has a metering valve between the supply opening and the return pipe, the dosage depending on the size of the mussel, the distance between the supply opening and the mussel, the opening angle between the shell flaps, and the strength of the inhalation flow and the water flow and / or the type of supply is adjustable. The dosage can preferably and advantageously be adjustable between a maximum dose and a minimum dose. This ensures that neither too little nor too much food or other substances is supplied. When adjusting the dosage depending on the type of supply, a distinction can be made between pure feeding, feeding with supplements and feeding with added medication. Each supply pipe has a metering valve and a return pipe. In the case of a large number of mussels to be supplied, a large number of metering valves and return pipes are provided according to the number of supply pipes.
The supply material is preferably dispensed via the metering valve which is arranged between the supply opening and the return pipe. The metering valve can work in an open or closed state, just like a metering system that controls the amount of supply. For example, if the metering valve is open, the supply material flows to the mussel; if it is closed, the supply material flows back into the storage container. This creates a flow of food through the return pipe, which allows the food to circulate in a loop, thereby avoiding undesirable effects in aquaculture, such as anoxia - lack of oxygen in the water due to "over-fertilization" by algae in particular. The opening / closing of the dosing valve and the set dose depend on the rhythm at which something is to be fed to the mussel or when it demands something. In one embodiment of the invention, the metering valve can preferably and advantageously be connected to a shell flap of the shell and actuated as a function of the opening angle of the shell. The mechanical connection with the shell flap, for example by gluing, does not bother the mussel. The mussel pulls the inhalation current into its interior through its ingestion opening and there through its gills. These serve both for breathing and for filtering food out of the water. To draw in the water, the shell can open at an opening angle. When it does this, in the above-mentioned embodiment of the invention it also actuates the metering valve via its flap movement and supply material flows into the interior of the mussel. The mussel can also be conditioned accordingly to a feed request via this connection.
A mechanical but non-invasive connection to a shell valve of the mussel is required for the embodiment mentioned. The mussel actuates the dosing valve directly with its opening movement. There is preferably and advantageously an alternative embodiment in which a sensor for detecting the opening angle of the mussel is arranged on at least one shell flap, a signal for actuating the metering valve being generated by the sensor. The dosing valve does not have to be closed completely. A small opening can be kept so that small amounts of feed or other substances can be dispensed continuously. These can be used by the mussels as chemical signals through which they sense that food is available. As an alternative to a sensor attached to one or both shell flaps of the mussel, a contactless sensor for detecting the opening angle of the mussel can preferably and advantageously be arranged in the invention, the sensor in turn generating a signal to actuate the metering valve. In this embodiment, the individual mussel is no longer bothered in any way. The preparatory work for feeding the mussel is simplified accordingly. It can preferably and advantageously be optical or magnetic sensors. Sensors can be used to monitor the opening, such as magnetic sensors (Hall sensors), which measure the distance between the two shell flaps (corresponds to the opening angle). As a further alternative, an optical sensor can preferably and advantageously be used, which is attached to the supply pipe in the vicinity of the supply opening with a view of the mussel. Sensors based on other physical principles can also be used. A number of sensors are commercially available that are suitable.
According to a next embodiment of the invention, it is preferably and advantageously provided that the supply unit comprises a supply source and a peristaltic pump. A peristaltic pump (or hose pump) is a positive displacement pump in which the medium to be conveyed is pushed through a hose in portions by external mechanical deformation. Such pumps work very reliably and are easily expandable, so that a large number of supply pipes can be continuously supplied with supply material. For example, algae can be raised in the supply source. Furthermore, it can preferably and advantageously be provided that a lighting device and / or various sensors are provided in the supply source. Algae growth can be supported via the lighting device. If the mussels are given a nutritional supplement or a drug, it may be necessary that certain parameters are recorded in the supply source in order to ensure optimal conditions. The detection can take place via the sensors provided, which measure, for example, the temperature or the pH value of the solution.
In order to be able to ensure a good alignment of the supply opening of the supply pipe in the direction of the inspiratory flow of the mussel, a fixation device for the mussels is used in the invention. This can preferably and advantageously comprise at least one holding frame or a holding box that does not hinder the flow of water and on or in which the mussel can be fixed. A separate supply pipe then leads to each mussel fixed in the fixation device or a separate supply pipe branches off from a higher-level pipe. A framework is usually constructed like a grid with a large number of individual levels and allows a good flow of water. However, any other design of a framework or of flow-permeable mounting boxes is also possible. The mussels can fix themselves to the framework via their foot or their byssus threads or they can be fixed to it by suitable means, for example with an elastic quick-release adhesive or a rubber ring that does not hinder the opening of the mussel. Or they are simply inserted into a storage box (without special fixing devices such as glue or rubber) so that they cannot change their position. A good water flow and close proximity of the mussels to one another allows gametes to be transported well, so that fertilization and thus reproduction of the mussels is possible despite the fixation of the mussels.
According to a last embodiment of the invention, computer-aided control of the metering valve and the supply unit can be provided. All dosing valves and the supply unit can be controlled in particular as a function of the sensor signals from the individual mussels. As a result, the device can be automated and can work independently. A fully automatic dosing system for mussels can be made available, in which the dosage, especially of feed, but also of supplements or medication, is individual for each mussel can be optimized. This saves resources and keeps the water free from unused supplies. Further details on this and on the modifications of the invention described above can be found in the following exemplary embodiments.
