Description
The invention relates to a method for exhaust gas aftertreatment of an internal combustion engine and an exhaust gas aftertreatment system for carrying out such a method according to the preamble of the independent patent claim.
The current exhaust gas legislation, which will become increasingly stringent in the future, places high demands on raw engine emissions and exhaust gas aftertreatment of internal combustion engines. The demands for a further decrease in consumption and the further tightening of the exhaust gas standards with regard to the permissible nitrogen oxide emissions represent a challenge for the engine developers. In gasoline engines, exhaust gas cleaning is carried out in a known manner using a three-way catalytic converter and the three-way catalytic converter - And downstream further catalysts. Exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are currently used in diesel engines, which have an oxidation catalytic converter or a NOx storage catalytic converter, a catalytic converter for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (SCR catalytic converter) and a particle filter for the separation of soot particles and, if appropriate, further catalysts. Ammonia is preferably used as the reducing agent. Because the use of pure ammonia is complex, a synthetic, aqueous urea solution is usually used in vehicles, which is mixed with the hot exhaust gas stream in a mixing device upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. This mixing heats the aqueous urea solution, the aqueous urea solution releasing ammonia in the exhaust duct. A commercially available, aqueous urea solution generally consists of 32.5% urea and 67.5% water.
Exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are known from the prior art which have a first SCR catalytic converter close to the engine, in particular a particle filter with an SCR coating and a second SCR catalytic converter which is arranged in an underbody layer of the motor vehicle remote from the engine. The particle filter close to the engine with the SCR coating can be heated up to its operating temperature more quickly after a cold start of the internal combustion engine and can thus be used for an efficient conversion of the peroxide emissions shortly after a cold start of the internal combustion engine. The second SCR catalytic converter, which is remote from the engine, is used for high engine loads and / or for regeneration of the particle filter, in which the particle filter close to the engine is operated with the SCR coating above the temperature range required for selective, catalytic reduction and therefore only for an insufficient conversion of the nitrogen oxides worries. The arrangement of the particle filter with the SCR coating close to the engine also means that there is only a short mixing section for mixing reducing agent and exhaust gas before it enters the particle filter and thus the uniform distribution over the cross section of the particle filter is restricted. This effect is increased at high exhaust gas mass flows and the associated high flow velocities in the exhaust gas duct. This can mean that regardless of the temperature, the conversion performance of the particle filter is insufficient and the conversion performance of the second SCR catalytic converter is also necessary.
It is also known that the conversion power of the two SCR catalysts can be increased if a defined amount of ammonia is stored on the catalytically active surface of the respective SCR catalyst. Depending on the current operating state of the internal combustion engine, reducing agent is metered into the exhaust duct upstream of the coated particle filter, upstream of the SCR catalytic converter in the underbody position or upstream of both SCR catalytic converters.
A disadvantage of the solutions known from the prior art, however, is that aging and a change in the conversion power of the SCR catalytic converters connected therewith can only be inadequately simulated by modeling, and ammonia slip thus occurs. This leads to an increased consumption of reducing agent and can lead to an increase in ammonia emissions.

The invention is based on the object of converting the nitrogen oxide emissions into elemental nitrogen as efficiently as possible in an exhaust gas aftertreatment system with a plurality of SCR catalysts and at the same time minimizing the use of reducing agents in order to avoid ammonia emissions.
- Dosing of the reducing agent into the exhaust gas duct of the internal combustion engine, a first NOx concentration being measured in the exhaust gas duct downstream of the particle filter,
- - Measuring a second concentration of NOx downstream of the particle filter and upstream of the second SCR catalyst, wherein
- - An ammonia concentration downstream of the particle filter and upstream of the second SCR catalyst is calculated using the measured nitrogen oxide concentrations, where
- - The dosage of the reducing agent is adjusted based on the calculated ammonia concentration, and wherein
- - The ammonia (NH3) located in the exhaust gas duct downstream of the particle filter is stored in the second SCR catalytic converter or used for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.
In this context, a particle filter close to the engine is to be understood as a particle filter whose inlet is spaced from the outlet of the internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas run length of at most 80 cm, preferably at most 50 cm. By means of a method according to the invention, it is possible to reduce the consumption of reducing agent in that the particle filter does not have to be operated at its storage limit for ammonia and less ammonia slip occurs. In addition, less ammonia is returned to the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine via the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, which minimizes the raw emissions, in particular the nitrogen oxide emissions.
The features listed in the dependent claims allow advantageous improvements and non-trivial further developments of the method for exhaust gas aftertreatment of the internal combustion engine listed in the independent claim.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is provided that an efficiency model for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides of the particle filter is determined. The ammonia slip and thus the ammonia concentration downstream of the particle filter can be determined using an efficiency model. The amount of reducing agent metered in can thus be adjusted in order to keep the ammonia slip as low as possible.
In a preferred embodiment of the method, it is provided that a difference in the concentration of nitrogen oxide upstream and downstream of the particle filter is determined and the mass of nitrogen oxides converted by the particle filter is calculated from the difference. By measuring the nitrogen oxide concentration upstream and downstream of the particle filter, the conversion performance of the particle filter with regard to the nitrogen oxide emissions can be deduced in a comparatively simple manner. The amount of reducing agent can thus be adjusted in order to achieve the most efficient conversion of the nitrogen oxide emissions.
A further improvement of the method provides that an aging factor for the particle filter is determined via the efficiency model. The modeling of the ammonia slip causes great uncertainties due to the different aging levels of the exhaust gas aftertreatment components. However, modeling the aging of the SCR coating is necessary in order to determine the storage capacity of the SCR coating with respect to the ammonia. By combining the measurement of the nitrogen oxide concentrations upstream and downstream of the particle filter and the efficiency of the NOx conversion of the particle filter, the mass of nitrogen oxides converted by the particle filter and the ammonia slip can be determined. The loading of the SCR coating of the particle filter with ammonia can be adjusted depending on the aging condition of this coating in order to minimize the ammonia slip and thus optimize the use of reducing agents.
According to the invention, an exhaust gas aftertreatment system for an internal combustion engine, which is connected with its outlet to an exhaust gas system, is proposed, wherein in the exhaust gas system downstream of a turbine of an exhaust gas turbocharger, a particle filter close to the engine with a coating for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides and a second SCR catalyst downstream of the particle filter are arranged. A first NOx sensor is arranged upstream of the particle filter and a second NOx sensor is arranged downstream of the particle filter and upstream of the second SCR catalytic converter. Furthermore, the exhaust gas aftertreatment system comprises a metering element with which a reducing agent can be metered into the exhaust gas duct upstream of the particle filter. An engine control unit is assigned to the internal combustion engine, which is set up to carry out a method according to the invention when a machine-readable program code is executed by the engine control unit. An exhaust gas aftertreatment system according to the invention makes it possible to minimize the nitrogen oxide emissions of the internal combustion engine and to optimize the use of reducing agents.
In a preferred embodiment of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system it is provided that the second SCR catalytic converter has an ammonia blocking catalytic converter or an ammonia blocking catalytic converter is connected downstream of the second SCR catalytic converter. An ammonia blocking catalytic converter can prevent the metering in of reducing agent from increasing the ammonia tailpipe emissions. It is thus possible to ensure that the ammonia present in the exhaust gas duct downstream of the particle filter is converted even in the event of ammonia slip via the particle filter.
In a preferred embodiment of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system it is provided that an oxidation catalytic converter or a NOx storage catalytic converter is arranged downstream of the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger and upstream of the metering element. The ratio of nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide can be changed by means of an oxidation catalytic converter, whereby the efficiency of the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides can be increased.
In a further improvement of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, it is provided that a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation branches off from the exhaust gas duct downstream of the particle filter and upstream of the second SCR catalytic converter. The particle filter allows soot particles and other solid particles to be filtered out of the exhaust gas flow, so that they are not returned to the air supply system via the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation and can lead to damage there, in particular damage to the compressor of the exhaust gas turbocharger. In addition, the raw emissions of the internal combustion engine can be minimized in a known manner by exhaust gas recirculation via the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, as a result of which the use of reducing agents in exhaust gas aftertreatment can also be reduced.
According to a preferred embodiment variant of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, it is provided that a second metering element is arranged downstream of the particle filter and upstream of the second SCR catalytic converter. The operating range of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system can be expanded by a second metering element. It is therefore possible, particularly at high exhaust gas temperatures at the particle filter, for example during a high-load phase of the internal combustion engine or during regeneration of the particle filter, to enable efficient conversion of the nitrogen oxides by the second SCR catalytic converter and to avoid thermal decomposition of the ammonia obtained from the reducing agent .
It is particularly preferred if the first metering element and the second metering element are supplied with reducing agent from a common reducing agent container. A common reducing agent container enables a particularly simple and inexpensive supply of the two dosing elements with the reducing agent.
In a further improvement of the invention it is provided that an exhaust gas mixer is arranged in the exhaust gas duct downstream of the first metering element and upstream of the particle filter with the coating for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. An exhaust gas mixer can achieve a homogeneous distribution of the reducing agent in the exhaust gas stream before it enters the particulate filter. The length of the mixing section can be shortened by the exhaust gas mixer in order to achieve such a homogeneous distribution. As a result, the particle filter can be arranged closer to the outlet of the internal combustion engine, which promotes heating of the particle filter after a cold start of the internal combustion engine or for regeneration of the particle filter.
Unless otherwise stated in the individual case, the various embodiments of the invention mentioned in this application can advantageously be combined with one another.
