To reduce or limit nitrogen oxide emissions from internal combustion engines, exhaust gas recirculation is used, with part of the exhaust gases being returned to the intake manifold.
To further reduce emissions, it is known to provide a so-called Fman sensor in the inlet manifold, which provides a sensor value that is characteristic of the oxygen content in the inlet manifold or, conversely, for the proportion of the burned gas mass in the inlet manifold and which is an essential parameter for estimating the current Nitrogen oxide emissions from an internal combustion engine.
Information about nitrogen oxide emissions is required to control exhaust gas aftertreatment, but can also be input parameters for engine control. Based on the Fman value supplied by the Fman sensor, the amount of fuel to be injected as well as the injection or ignition times can be determined in order to optimize the combustion processes in the cylinders with regard to pollutant emissions.
An Fman sensor is an oxygen sensor with a Nernst cell and a pump cell, each containing a zirconium electrolyte that can transport oxygen ions at higher temperatures, creating a voltage on the external electrodes of the Nernst cell. Since this voltage is abrupt, a pump current can be passed through the pump cell to expand the measuring range, which pumps oxygen ions into or out of the measuring gap between the Nernst cell and the pump cell. Such a sensor and its control are therefore relatively complex.
The invention is based on the object of specifying a method for obtaining the oxygen content in the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, which can be carried out with particularly little effort even in the case of exhaust gas recirculation and is nevertheless suitable for the oxygen content and thus also for the proportion of the burned To obtain gas mass in the inlet manifold characteristic value with sufficient accuracy.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a method and a motor vehicle with the features of the independent patent claims.
Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims.
According to the invention, the method is carried out in an internal combustion engine with exhaust gas recirculation and the oxygen content is determined, without the need for a lambda measurement, from measured values of humidity and temperature of the air in an air inlet of the internal combustion engine as well as from measured values of humidity, temperature and pressure of the gas mixture won in the inlet manifold.
- O2 =
- Massenanteil des Sauerstoffs im Einlassgas
- O2fresh_air =
- Massenanteil des Sauerstoffs in der Frischluft
- B =
- Mw(H2O) / Mw(gas) · 1000 [g/kg]

- Molecular mass of oxygen
- RH =
- measured relative humidity in the inlet gas
- Pws(T) =
- Saturation vapor pressure for the measured temperature T
- Ptot =
- measured pressure of the gas mixture
Apart from constants, the variables mentioned therein are not based on any other measured values than those stated in
The molecular mass of the inlet gas depends on its composition and therefore also on the proportion of the burned gas mass in the inlet manifold, for which the mass proportion of oxygen in the inlet manifold is characteristic. However, it is possible to use this size as one - e.g. B. to set a constant estimated based on the exhaust gas recirculation rate.
It is of course more precise to express the molecular mass of the inlet gas in a known manner as a function of the mass fraction of oxygen in the inlet manifold, in which case the above equation would have to be solved iteratively, i.e. e.g. B. use the last burned portion to calculate 8 and then run the equation several times until it converges. This could either be done in real time in the vehicle, or you could use the above equation to create a lookup table that is stored in the vehicle electronics and from which you can later read the oxygen content in the intake manifold.
In modern combustion engines with turbochargers, a value for the pressure of the gas mixture is available in the form of the boost pressure, which is required anyway to regulate the turbocharger.
In one embodiment of the invention, the internal combustion engine contains a turbocharger with a compressor and a turbine, with a high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation line opening downstream of the compressor into a gas inlet channel, which in turn opens into the intake manifold, with a first moisture sensor downstream of the opening of the high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation line into the Gas inlet channel is arranged. Alternatively or additionally, a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation line can open into a fresh air inlet channel upstream of the compressor, with a second humidity sensor being arranged downstream of the compressor.

At the location of each humidity sensor there is also a gas temperature sensor, which can also be integrated into the respective humidity sensor.
The
The
The
The provision of both
To explain the estimation of the proportion of the burned gas mass in the
- i. The relative humidity RH measured by the
humidity sensor 10 corresponds to the absolute humidity divided by the saturation humidity, which in turn is linked in a clear and known manner to the temperature and the partial pressure Pw of the water vapor. Therefore, the water vapor partial pressure Pw can be calculated from the relative humidity RH and the temperature T of the inlet gas downstream of thecompressor 3, i.e. as a function f (RH, T) = (RH · Pws (T) / 100%), where Pws (T) is the saturation vapor pressure. - ii. From the water vapor partial pressure Pw and the ratio of the molecular mass of the water vapor (Mw H2O ) to the molecular mass of the gas (Mw gas ), a quantity
- Pw: water vapor partial pressure
- Ptot: Total pressure = boost pressure
- with B = Mw H2O / Mw gas · 1000 [g/kg]
- iii. The mass ratio of the water in the inlet is therefore:
- (mass of water vapor divided by gas mass) = X
- iv. The fraction of burned gas mass in the inlet is defined as:
- v. For the estimation it is assumed that the well-known equation for ideal combustion is applicable to the combustion of hydrocarbons in the internal combustion engine:
- → The detection of 1 molecule of H2O means the disappearance of 0.5 molecule of O2
- → The detection of 1 gram of H2O represents the disappearance of 0.5 × (molecular mass of O2 / molecular mass of H2O) grams of O2
- vi. Taking points (iv) and (v) above together, the mass ratio of oxygen burned in the inlet (Mw = molecular mass) is:
- O2 fresh_air [g]: Mass fraction of oxygen in fresh air
- O2 [g]: Mass fraction of oxygen in the inlet gas
- Thus, the required Fman value results from knowledge of the humidity and temperature in the inlet manifold without using an Fman sensor, with the humidity being measured downstream of the compressor in the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system considered here.
- The previous calculations were based on the assumption that there is no ambient humidity. In reality, however, there is always more or less moisture in the inlet air. Since this water vapor does not result from combustion, it contributes to the inlet oxygen calculation in a different way.
- If there is a relative humidity sensor in the air inlet, the inlet air mixing ratio X airfresh can be calculated as in point (ii) above if the air inlet temperature is also known. This mixing ratio X airfresh can now be applied to the mixture of fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas, as in
2 illustrated, since the recirculated exhaust gas flow EGR logically also contains the proportion of ambient humidity. - In particular is in
2 :
- vii. Now will
- O2 fresh_air_without_humidity = mass fraction of oxygen in fresh air without moisture (a known fixed value)
- X air_intake can be calculated as in point (ii) above at the air inlet location (based on the temperature at the air inlet location).
- X dsComp is the corresponding mixing ratio downstream of
compressor 3 and can be calculated similarly.
A small difference arises from the fuel ultimately introduced into the combustion chamber. If necessary, this can be corrected by introducing a factor (fac cor_fuel ).
- 1. Reduction due to moisture in the fresh air:
- 2. Reduction due to the combustion of oxygen, which now becomes:
It was thus shown that and in what way for low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, even under real conditions with an ambient air humidity > 0, an Fman value for the oxygen content or the corresponding proportion of the burned gas mass in the inlet manifold without using a lambda measurement such as. B. by means of an Fman sensor from knowledge of the humidity in the air inlet and in the inlet manifold and the temperatures therein.
For high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, the Fman value is calculated analogously to the above, but based on a measurement of the moisture in the
In an internal combustion engine with high-pressure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, both operating modes can be used simultaneously or separately, with the
As shown, no lambda measurement is necessary to determine the fraction of gas mass burned in the intake manifold, and not even an exhaust lambda measurement, which is typically required as Fman = Fexh · r EGR , where Fexh is the fraction of gas mass burned in the exhaust, Fexh = 1 - O2 exh/21 , and r EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation rate.
From all of this it follows that the oxygen content in the intake manifold can be determined using the equation mentioned in the introduction to the description.
