Exhaust gas recirculation is used to reduce or limit nitrogen oxide emissions from internal combustion engines, with some of the exhaust gases being returned to the intake manifold.
To further reduce emissions, it is known to provide a so-called Fman sensor in the intake manifold, which provides a sensor value that is characteristic of the proportion of oxygen in the intake manifold or vice versa for the fraction of the burned gas mass in the intake manifold and which is an essential parameter for estimating the current Nitric oxide emissions of an internal combustion engine is.
Information about nitrogen oxide emissions is needed to control exhaust aftertreatment, but may also be input to engine control. Thus, on the basis of the Fman value supplied by the Fman sensor, the fuel quantity to be injected as well as injection or ignition times can be set in order to optimize the combustion processes in the cylinders with regard to pollutant emissions.
A Fman sensor is an oxygen sensor with a Nernst cell and a pump cell, each containing a zirconium electrolyte that can transport oxygen ions at higher temperatures, creating a voltage across the outer electrodes of the Nernst cell. Since this voltage is jump-shaped, a pumping current can be passed through the pump cell to expand the measuring range, pumping oxygen ions into or out of the measuring gap between the Nernst cell and the pump cell. Such a sensor and its control are thus relatively expensive.
The invention is based on the object to provide a method for obtaining the oxygen content in the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, which is feasible in the case of exhaust gas recirculation with very little effort and is nevertheless suitable, the oxygen content and thus one for the proportion of burned Gas mass in the intake manifold to gain characteristic value with sufficient accuracy.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a method and a motor vehicle having the features of the independent claims.
Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims.
According to the invention, the method is carried out in an internal combustion engine with exhaust gas recirculation and the oxygen content, without a lambda measurement is necessary, from measurements of humidity and temperature of the air in an air intake of the engine and from measured values of humidity, temperature and pressure of the gas mixture won in the intake manifold.
- O2
- = Massenanteil des Sauerstoffs im Einlassgas
- O2fresh_air
- = Massenanteil des Sauerstoffs in der Frischluft
- B
- = Mw(H2O) / Mw(gas) · 1000 [g/kg]
- Mw(H2O)
- = Molekülmasse von Wasser
- Mw(gas)
- = Molekülmasse des Einlassgases
- Mw(O2)
- = Molekülmasse von Sauerstoff
- RH
- = gemessene relative Feuchte im Einlassgas
- Pws(T)
- = Sättigungsdampfdruck für die gemessene Temperatur T
- Ptot
- = gemessener Druck der Gasmischung
- O2
- = Mass fraction of oxygen in the inlet gas
- O2 fresh_air
- = Mass fraction of oxygen in the fresh air
- B
- = Mw (H2O) / Mw (gas) * 1000 [g / kg]
- Mw (H2O)
- = Molecular weight of water
- Mw (gas)
- = Molecular weight of the inlet gas
- Mw (O2)
- = Molecular weight of oxygen
- RH
- = measured relative humidity in the inlet gas
- Pws (T)
- = Saturation vapor pressure for the measured temperature T
- P tot
- = measured pressure of the gas mixture
The quantities mentioned therein are based on constants on no further measured values than specified in
Although the molecular mass of the inlet gas depends on its composition, and thus on the fraction of the burned gas mass in the intake manifold, for which the mass fraction of the oxygen in the intake manifold is characteristic. However, there is the possibility of this size in favor of a particularly simple predictability of the oxygen content in the intake manifold with still sufficient accuracy than a -. B. based on the exhaust gas recirculation rate estimated - to set constant.
More specifically, it is natural to express the molecular mass of the inlet gas in a known manner as a function of the mass fraction of the oxygen in the intake manifold, in which case the above equation would be iteratively solved, ie z. For example, use the last burned fraction to compute B and then cycle through the equation until it converges. This could either be done in real time in the vehicle, or you can use the above equation creates a lookup table, which is stored in the vehicle electronics and from which one later reads the oxygen content in the intake manifold.
A value for the pressure of the gas mixture is present in modern supercharged engines with turbocharger in the form of the boost pressure, which is needed to control the turbocharger anyway.
In one embodiment of the invention, the internal combustion engine includes a turbocharger having a compressor and a turbine, wherein a high pressure exhaust gas recirculation line opens downstream of the compressor into a gas inlet channel, which in turn opens into the intake manifold, wherein a first humidity sensor downstream of the junction of the high pressure exhaust gas recirculation line in the gas inlet channel is arranged. Alternatively or additionally, a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation line may open into a fresh-air inlet channel upstream of the compressor, wherein a second humidity sensor is arranged downstream of the compressor.

- i. The by means of the
humidity sensor 10 measured relative humidity RH corresponds to the absolute humidity divided by the saturation moisture, which in turn are linked in a unique and known manner with the temperature and the partial pressure Pw of the water vapor. Therefore, the water vapor partial pressure Pw can be calculated from the relative humidity RH and the temperature T of the inlet gas downstream of thecompressor 3 Thus, as a function f (RH, T) = (RH · Pws (T) / 100%), where Pws (T) is the saturation vapor pressure. - ii. From the water vapor partial pressure Pw and the ratio of the molecular weight of the water vapor (Mw H2O ) to the molecular weight of the gas (Mw gas ), a size X can be determined as follows:
- Pw: water vapor partial pressure
- Ptot: total pressure = boost pressure
- with B = Mw H2O / Mw gas · 1000 [g / kg]
- iii. The mass ratio of the water in the inlet is thus:
- (Mass of water vapor divided by the gas mass) = X
- iv. The proportion of burned gas mass in the inlet is defined as:
- v. For the estimation, it is assumed that the known equation for ideal combustion is applicable to the combustion of hydrocarbons in the internal combustion engine:
CxHy + (x + y / 4) O2 → x CO2 + y / 2 H2O - → The detection of 1 molecule H2O represents the disappearance of 0.5 molecule O2
- → The detection of 1 gram of H2O represents the disappearance of 0.5 × (molecular weight of O2 / molecular weight of H2O) grams of O2
- vi. Taking the above items (iv) and (v) together, the mass ratio of the combusted oxygen in the inlet (Mw = molecular weight) is:
- O2 fresh_air [g]: mass fraction of oxygen in the fresh air
- O2 [g]: mass fraction of oxygen in the inlet gas
- Thus, the required Fman value without using a Fman sensor results from the knowledge of the humidity and temperature in the intake manifold, wherein the humidity is measured at the considered here low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation downstream of the compressor.
- The previous calculations were based on the assumption that there is no ambient humidity. In reality, however, there is always more or less moisture in the intake air. Since this water vapor does not result from the combustion, it contributes in another way to the calculation of the oxygen in the inlet.
- If there is a relative humidity sensor in the air intake, the intake air mixing ratio X airfresh can be calculated as in (ii) above, if the temperature in the air intake is also known. This mixing ratio X airfresh can now be applied to the mixture of fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas, as in
2 illustrated, as well as the recirculated exhaust gas flow EGR logically contains the proportion of ambient humidity. - In particular, in
2 :
- vii. Now will
- O2 fresh_air_without_humidity = mass fraction of oxygen in the fresh air without humidity (a known fixed value)
- X air_intake can be calculated as in point (ii) above at the location of the air inlet (based on the temperature at the location of the air inlet).
- X dsComp is the corresponding mixing ratio downstream of the
compressor 3 and can be calculated similarly. - Note that the ratio X air_intake = (mass of the water vapor divided by mass of the gas) with the same ratio can be applied to the mixture air + recirculated exhaust gas EGR, to express the fact that the presence of air humidity equals the oxygen concentration to the same Minimize way for the whole mixture (before any combustion is taken into account).
- A small difference arises from the fuel ultimately introduced into the combustion chamber. If necessary, this can be corrected by introducing a factor (fac cor_fuel ).
- For this reason, the size X comb can be determined as follows based on the humidity measurement by means of the
humidity sensor 10 immediately downstream of thecompressor 3 be calculated:
- 1. Reduction due to humidity in the fresh air:
- 2. Reduction due to the combustion of oxygen, which now becomes:
9 and10 as well as at the respective locations of the humidity sensors9 and10 obtained temperature readings are calculated.
Thus, it was shown that and in which way for low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation even under real conditions with an ambient humidity> 0, a Fman value for the oxygen content or the corresponding proportion of the burned gas mass in the intake manifold without using a lambda measurement such. B. by means of a Fman sensor from the knowledge of the humidity in the air intake and in the intake manifold and the temperatures therein is available.
As shown, no lambda measurement is needed to determine the fraction of combusted gas mass in the intake manifold, and not even an exhaust lambda measurement, which is typically required as Fman = Fexh · r EGR , where Fexh is the fraction of gas mass burned in the outlet, Fexh = 1 - O2 exh / 21 , and r EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation rate.
It follows from all this that the oxygen content in the intake manifold can be determined on the basis of the equation mentioned in the introduction to the description.
