Description
The invention relates to a fuel cell with a membrane electrode arrangement, in which electrode catalyst layers are arranged on both sides of a membrane and can be supplied with the reactants through gas diffusion layers as channels assigned to flow field plates. The invention further relates to a fuel cell stack.
Fuel cells are used to generate electrical energy from an electrochemical reaction. For this purpose, fuel cells have a membrane electrode arrangement in which the membrane, in particular a proton exchange membrane, is arranged between two electrode catalyst layers, namely an anode catalyst layer on one side and a cathode catalyst layer on the other side. The reactants must be supplied to these electrode catalyst layers, for which purpose flow field plates are provided, in which channels for the reactants are formed. Gas diffusion layers are positioned between the flow field plates and the electrode catalyst layers in order to enable a uniform supply of the reactants to the electrode catalyst layers and thus to improve the efficiency and the stability of the fuel cell. Finally, a fuel cell includes two end plates, which are used to secure the above-mentioned layers in their arrangement and to press them against one another and to seal them, for which purpose additional sealing plates may be used.
The size of the cross section of the channels is such that a sufficient amount of the reactants can be led to the electrode catalyst layers through these channels. However, it has proven to be problematic that the gas diffusion layers penetrate into the channels during the pressing and thereby reduce the cross-section, so that this effect has made it necessary to increase the cross-section of the channels accordingly in order to compensate for this loss during the pressing. However, this means that the uniform distribution of the reactants is no longer guaranteed and the overall height of the fuel cell increases and the power density is reduced as a result.

The object of the invention is therefore to improve a fuel cell of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that the penetration of the gas diffusion layers into the channels of the flow field plates can be reduced or even avoided. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved fuel cell stack.
This object is achieved by a fuel cell with the features of
The improved fuel cell takes advantage of the fact that the solution to the problem of penetration of the gas diffusion layers into the channels of the flow field plates can be achieved not only by optimizing the gas diffusion layers with regard to their mechanical properties, but also by providing the gas diffusion layers with support structures which are used in the Can absorb and derive deformation of the gas diffusion layers occurring forces, a support layer is provided in the simplest way, which fits into the layer structure of the fuel cell.
Since the problem of penetration of the gas diffusion layer occurs both on the anode side and on the cathode side, it is expedient if on everyone A support layer is assigned to both gas diffusion layers on the side of the membrane, the support layer being electrically conductive and gas-permeable in order not to impair the normal use of the fuel cell.
It is further preferred if the support layer is designed as a grid, since it is used in such a way that the depth of penetration of the gas diffusion layer into the corresponding channel depends on the free length of the gas diffusion layer between the channel walls, since there is a connection between the support points on the channel walls Arch forms in the gas diffusion layer. By using a support layer designed as a grid, the free length of the gas diffusion layer between the struts of the grid is significantly reduced with correspondingly smaller arcs, so that the material provided in the gas diffusion layer between the channel walls runs in microbows between the struts of the support layer and correspondingly only a slight one Penetration into the depth of the channel is made possible.
There is also the possibility that the support layer is formed with pores in order not to impair the actual purpose of the gas diffusion layer, namely the supply of the electrode catalyst layers with the reactants from the channels of the flow field plates. For this purpose it is sufficient that the pores in the support layer are arranged in the areas opposite the channels, that is to say in the areas between the channels to increase the stability of the support layer, the number and / or the size of the pores can be reduced or even complete the pores are dispensed with. There is also the possibility that the support layer is formed from fiber material, the fibers of which are oriented transversely to the channels, and thus transversely to the longitudinal extent of the channels, that is to say a correspondingly greater stiffness is provided in the required direction.
The support layer causes an increase in the mass transfer resistance for the reactants. It is therefore provided that the mass transfer resistance of the gas diffusion layer is reduced compared to a conventional gas diffusion layer, such that the mass transfer resistance in combination with the support layer corresponds to that of a conventional gas diffusion layer. With conventional gas diffusion layers, the mass transfer is usually already optimized, so that the mass transfer resistance is increased as a result of an additional layer, namely the support layer. This can be counteracted by striving for the optimum mass transfer resistance with regard to the combination of the support layer and the gas diffusion layer.
With a higher power requirement, it is common to arrange a plurality of fuel cells in series and to combine them into a fuel cell stack. Such a fuel cell stack can be improved in terms of its power density by using the fuel cells used in accordance with the improved embodiment.
