Description
The invention relates to a fuel cell stack, comprising a plurality of structurally identical unit cells stacked on top of one another in a stacking direction, each having one or more media channels and a membrane electrode arrangement which comprises a cathode, an anode and a membrane arranged between the cathode and the anode, and at least a media guide laterally connectable or connected to the plurality of unit cells and running parallel to the stacking direction, which has a usable flow cross section and which is designed to guide a medium substantially laterally to the stacking direction into or out of the media channels of the unit cells of the plurality of unit cells. The invention also relates to a method for its production and a fuel cell device with such a fuel cell stack.
Fuel cell devices are used to chemically convert a fuel with oxygen into water to generate electrical energy. For this purpose, fuel cells contain a so-called membrane electrode arrangement as a core component, which is a composite of a proton-conducting membrane and an electrode (anode and cathode) arranged on both sides of the membrane. In addition, gas diffusion layers (GDL) can be arranged on both sides of the membrane electrode arrangement on the sides of the electrodes facing away from the membrane. During operation of the fuel cell device with a plurality of fuel cells combined to form a fuel cell stack, the fuel, in particular hydrogen (H 2 ) or a hydrogen-containing gas mixture, is fed to the anode, where an electrochemical oxidation of H 2 to H + takes place with the release of electrons e -. A water-bound or water-free transport of the protons H + from the anode space into the cathode space takes place via the membrane, which separates the reaction spaces from one another in a gas-tight manner and insulates them electrically. The electrons provided at the anode are fed to the cathode via an electrical line. Oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas mixture is fed to the cathode, so that a reduction of O 2 to O 2- takes place while absorbing the electrons. At the same time, the oxygen anions in the cathode compartment react with the protons transported across the membrane to form water. This water must be led out of the fuel cell and the fuel cell stack until a moisture level is reached that is necessary for the operation of the fuel cell device.
Fuel cell devices are used in a wide variety of systems, for example in motor vehicles, in commercial vehicles or also in building technology, so that a large number of different requirements are placed on each individual unit cell formed from distribution plate and membrane electrode arrangement comprising media channels. A cooling medium typically also flows between two adjacent distributor plates, which together can form a bipolar plate, for suitable temperature control of the fuel cell stack. The three media, namely the fuel, the cathode gas and the coolant, are conducted separately from one another to the respective active areas of the unit cells, with a supply and a discharge taking place via so-called media ducts. This supply and removal of each medium to or from the active area of the cell takes place perpendicular to the stacking direction of a fuel cell stack.

Attaching such external “headers” has the advantage that the dimensions of the bipolar plates can be made smaller, since there are no media ports in the plates. The material, which is expensive for bipolar plates, can thus be saved, since the external media guides, which are attached laterally to the fuel cell stack, can be produced from a more cost-effective material. In addition, the most expensive part of any fuel cell is the active area that is used to generate electricity. There is therefore an effort to produce unit cells of identical construction. Different performance classes can be served by stacking the unit cell with different numbers.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a fuel cell stack which has an optimized pressure distribution for at least one of its media with a smaller number of components. It is also an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing such a fuel cell stack and a fuel cell device with such a fuel cell stack.
This object is achieved with a fuel cell stack with the features of
The at least one media duct of the fuel cell stack according to the invention has, in particular, a usable flow cross section that changes along the direction of flow of the medium.
In this way, it is possible to dispense with additional insert components, because the shape of the at least one media guide means that there is already an optimized pressure distribution across the entire stack of unit cells. With the external "header", i.e. the media guides attached laterally to the stacked unit cells, there is already a component that has the desired properties for adjusting the flow of a medium. A subsequent change in the flow cross-section of the media routing is therefore obsolete.
For an improved treatment of the pressure losses prevailing in the stacking direction, it is advantageous if the usable flow cross-section is reduced along the flow direction of the medium if the media guide is a media feed, and if the usable flow cross-section increases along the flow direction of the medium if the media guide is used is a media derivative.
In order to simplify the production of the fuel cell stack and to avoid unnecessary material consumption in the production of the at least one media duct, it makes sense if the at least one media duct comprises a wall whose thickness is essentially constant over the length of the at least one media duct.
The number of components of the fuel cell stack is also reduced in particular in that the at least one media duct is designed to be free of inserts or free of inserts.
Various constellations are possible for the usable flow cross-section. A preferred embodiment of the at least one media guide provides that the usable flow cross section of the at least one media guide changes continuously in the flow direction of the medium.
However, since the unit cells are stacked and thus also their media channels, it is alternatively advantageous if the flow cross-section of the at least one media guide changes in steps in the flow direction of the medium.
A factor for changing the flow cross-section in the flow direction of the medium of the at least one media guide has proven to be advantageous, which is adapted to the number of stacked, structurally identical unit cells, because in this way existing pressure losses can be optimally preset. This factor correlates positively with a factor for the flow resistance of the medium flowing in the media guide. While in known fuel cell stacks the flow cross-section can only be set after the stacking of the unit cells, the desired flow properties can already be preset with the present invention due to the selected shape of the at least one media guide. The factor for the change in the flow cross section is preferably selected such that there is essentially the same pressure loss of a medium flowing in the media guide at each stacked unit cell.
For an optimized supply of media to the fuel cell stack, it is advantageous if there is a large number of media ducts with the usable flow cross-section that changes in the direction of flow of the medium, the media ducts being a fuel feed, a fuel discharge, a cathode gas feed and a cathode gas discharge, as well as a coolant feed and include a coolant drain.
An optimized supply of the active surface of the stacked unit cells can be brought about, for example, in that the fuel supply can be or is connected to a first short edge of the stacked unit cells, and that the fuel discharge line can be or is connected to a second short edge of the stacked unit cells. Thus, for example, the rectangular unit cells are provided with media channels that extend up to the respective Extend the plate edge of the unit cells, wherein the fuel guide is present from the first short edge over the active area to the second short edge of the unit cells.
In order to bring about a cross-flow principle between the fuel and the cathode gas, it has proven advantageous if the cathode gas supply can be or is connected to a first long edge of the stacked unit cells, and if the cathode gas discharge line can be or is connected to a second long edge of the stacked unit cells . The cathode gas guide can be subject to a deflection, so that the cathode gas feed and the cathode gas discharge are arranged offset on the two opposite long edges.
As already discussed for the cathode gas supply, for the coolant supply there is also the possibility that the coolant supply can be or is connected to a first long edge of the stacked unit cells, and that the coolant discharge line can be or is connected to a second long edge of the stacked unit cells. Here, too, there is the possibility that the coolant is subject to a deflection, so that the coolant supply is arranged on the first long edge opposite the coolant discharge line present on the second long edge, but offset therefrom.
In order to be able to adapt the fuel cell stack to the given installation space conditions, it has proven to be advantageous if the usable flow cross-sections of the cathode gas supply and / or the cathode gas discharge line and / or the coolant supply and / or the coolant discharge line are rectangular, and if the usable flow cross-sections of the fuel supply and / or the fuel discharge line, at least in sections, preferably exclusively form a segment of a circle.
It is noted at this point, however, that the shape of the media guide and the positioning of the same on the stacked unit cells are not to be understood as restrictive. Therefore, different shapes for the media guides and / or different types of positioning can also be present on the stacked unit cells.
The use of different geometries for the external "headers", i.e. the media guides that can be attached laterally, means that the media supply of the stack can be designed for every performance class in an uncompromisingly optimal way. Since higher performance classes of a fuel cell device lead to higher media consumption, each media supply and / or media discharge is preferably optimized by attaching the external media guides to the stacked unit cells with a preferably enlarged line cross-section for larger performance classes.
The advantages and advantageous effects of the fuel cell stack according to the invention apply equally to the fuel cell device according to the invention which is equipped with such a fuel cell stack.
- - Stacking a number of stackable, structurally identical unit cells along a stacking direction, determined as a function of a desired performance, the unit cells each having one or more media channels and a membrane electrode arrangement which comprises a cathode, an anode and a membrane arranged between the cathode and the anode,
- - Providing or selecting at least one media duct which has a flow cross-section that can be used as a function of the previously defined number of stacked, structurally identical unit cells and that changes in the direction of flow, and
- Attaching the at least one media guide laterally with respect to the stacking direction to the stacked, structurally identical unit cells.
This method has the advantage that the fuel cell stack can be produced in a simple manner in such a way that it is adapted to the desired performance and that there is an optimized pressure distribution for the flowing medium on the stacked unit cells; without having to use additional inlays or inserts to adjust the flow cross-section.
In this way, the unit cell used can remain untouched in order to ensure an optimal media supply for any stack size due to the use of media guides with flow cross-sections that change along the stacking direction. Due to the different number of stacked unit cells, different performance classes of the fuel cell stack can be implemented. Because of the structurally identical unit cells, the number of identical parts in the fuel cell device is increased, which lowers its production costs.
To fix each media guide at a fixed location on the fuel cell stack To be able to, it has proven to be advantageous if the stackable, structurally identical unit cells have a pair of receiving slots arranged in parallel and running in the stacking direction, a free end of the at least one media guide being received in each receiving slot, and at least one of the receiving slots having a Has latching seat in which a latching member arranged on at least one of the free ends, in particular in a form-fitting manner, is received.
By using a latching device formed from latching seat and latching member, the position of the media guide with respect to the plurality of stacked, structurally identical unit cells can be determined, especially when there is a form fit between latching seat and latching member that is effective both in the lateral and in the stacking direction. In a special embodiment, both the locking seat and the locking member are formed in the shape of a dome.
