Fuel cells use the chemical transformation of a fuel with oxygen to water to generate electrical energy. For this purpose, fuel cells contain as core component the so-called membrane electrode assembly (MEA for membrane electrode assembly), which is a composite of a proton-conducting membrane and in each case one on both sides of the membrane arranged electrode (anode and cathode). In addition, gas diffusion layers (GDL) can be arranged on both sides of the membrane-electrode assembly on the sides of the electrodes facing away from the membrane. As a rule, the fuel cell is formed by a multiplicity of stacked MEAs whose electrical powers add up. During operation of the fuel cell, the fuel, in particular hydrogen H 2 or a hydrogen-containing gas mixture, is fed to the anode, where an electrochemical oxidation of H 2 to H + takes place with emission of electrons. Via the electrolyte or the membrane, which separates the reaction spaces gas-tight from each other and electrically isolated, takes place (water-bound or anhydrous) transport of protons H + from the anode compartment in the cathode compartment. The electrons provided at the anode are supplied to the cathode via an electrical line. The cathode is supplied with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas mixture, so that a reduction of O 2 to O 2- taking place of the electrons takes place. At the same time, these oxygen anions in the cathode compartment react with the protons transported via the membrane to form water. The direct conversion of chemical to electrical energy fuel cells achieve over other electricity generators due to the circumvention of the Carnot factor improved efficiency.
Currently the most advanced fuel cell technology is based on polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs), where the membrane itself consists of a polymer electrolyte. In this case, acid-modified polymers, in particular perfluorinated polymers, are often used. The most common representative of this class of polymer electrolytes is a membrane of a sulfonated polytetrafluoroethylene copolymer (trade name: Nafion; copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a sulfonyl fluoride derivative of a perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether). The electrolytic conduction takes place via hydrated protons, which is why the presence of water is a prerequisite for the proton conductivity and moistening of the operating gases is required during operation of the PEM fuel cell. Due to the necessity of the water, the maximum operating temperature of these fuel cells is limited to below 100 ° C at standard pressure. In contrast to high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEM fuel cells) whose electrolytic conductivity is based on an electrode bound by electrostatic complexation to a polymer backbone of the polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyte (for example, phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes) and at temperatures of 160 ° C, this type of fuel cell is also referred to as a low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (NT-PEM fuel cell).
As mentioned in the introduction, the fuel cell is formed by a plurality of individual cells arranged in the stack, so that it is referred to as a fuel cell stack. Between the membrane-electrode units bipolar plates are usually arranged, which ensure a supply of the individual cells with the operating media, ie the reactants and usually also a cooling liquid. In addition, the bipolar plates provide an electrically conductive contact to the membrane-electrode assemblies.
In the manufacture of the fuel cell, the membrane-electrode assemblies are stacked alternately with the bipolar plates. This is done by means of a positioning device (also called centering device), by which it is possible to stack the membrane-electrode assemblies and the bipolar plates in a defined position to each other.
The positioning (centering), for example, via (relatively thin) positioning rods (centering rods), which abut (very narrow) edges of the metallic bipolar plate. The edges can bend very easily, causing a short circuit. In addition, wrinkling of the membrane-electrode assembly can not be excluded 100%, which is why the positioning is not process reliable. The special openings in the bipolar plates and membrane-electrode assemblies thus increase a (chemically) inactive area.
An alternative approach to positioning is to stack the bipolar plates and the membrane-electrode assemblies on an inclined platen of a positioning device and align them by their outer edges. By means of the inclined support plate is trying to prevent already stacked bipolar plates and membrane electrode units slip back from its predetermined position. However, if the support plate is inclined too much, wrinkling may again occur. To prevent this, the membrane-electrode assemblies can be manually raised if necessary to avoid wrinkling. However, this requires a huge amount of work.
The invention is therefore based on the object to provide a method for assembling a fuel cell stack and a positioning device, by means of which a wrinkling is avoided at the same time accurate and quick positioning.
- - Providing a positioning device with at least one positioning means, and
- - Stacking of the layers, wherein the main surfaces of the juxtaposed layers have an angle to the horizontal.
- - penetrates through openings of the layers,
- - engages in recesses of the layers, and / or
- - supports the layers on projections of the layers.
By virtue of the fact that the at least one positioning means (which can also be referred to as centering means) penetrates the passage openings of the layers, engages in recesses in the layers, and / or supports the layers on the at least one positioning means, while the main surfaces of the layers arranged next to one another support one another Have angles to the horizontal, wrinkling of the individual layers can be prevented. The layers thus each have at least one passage opening, at least one recess and / or at least one projection. For a complete definition of the positions of the layers, further positioning means may be provided.
The layers typically contact the at least one positioning means directly. The at least one positioning means may be a positioning rod (centering rod) or a positioning bolt (centering pin).
The juxtaposition takes place in the sense of stacking. Thus, the respectively oppositely oriented main surfaces of the adjoining layers face each other. The individual layers do not necessarily have to be stacked on top of each other, but can also be "stacked" horizontally (ie "stacked").
The layers are usually flat bodies, ie layers whose dimensions along a major surface of the layer is a multiple of an extent of the position perpendicular to the main surface. The main surfaces are the two largest surfaces of the respective layer, which are arranged on opposite sides of the layer. The main surfaces can also be abstracted as the main levels of the layers. The major surfaces of the juxtaposed layers can be arranged parallel to each other and / or touch each other. The layers may include flow field plates (polar plates) and membrane electrode assemblies. The flow field plates may in turn comprise monopolar plates and / or bipolar plates, with typically several bipolar plates being alternately lined up with the membrane-electrode units. Furthermore, the layers may also comprise a plurality of individual cells, which are lined up. The layers may further include end plates between which the finished fuel cell stack is compressed.
The passage openings are preferably equipment openings, in particular reactant openings (which are often also referred to as main gas channels). As a result of this embodiment, operating medium openings already present in the layers can be used for centering the layers, as a result of which no area is wasted for additional passage openings. Operating medium openings are passage openings through which operating medium flows in the fuel cell stack during its operation. The operating means may include an anode gas, a cathode gas (ie the reactants) and a coolant, usually a cooling liquid. Operating medium channels can be easily distinguished, in particular in the case of bipolar plates, from centering openings or other openings. Typically, in bipolar plates, channels from the reactant openings lead to a manifold structure on the surface of the bipolar plates, which supplies a chemically active region of an adjacent membrane-electrode assembly with the reactants. In resource openings, which are passage openings for the coolant, in each case at least two such resource openings per bipolar plates are connected to one another by means of coolant channels in the interior of the bipolar plates. The resource ports of the membrane-electrode assembly have positions similar to those of the bipolar plates within the fuel cell stack, such that the resource ports typically pass straight through the fuel cell stack along the stacking direction.
The juxtaposed layers can contact landing surfaces. The first layer can contact a contact surface of the positioning device. The further layers typically contact respective contact surfaces, which is formed by the respective previous layer. The layers can rest in particular on the respective contact surfaces. The contact surfaces can each extend within a plane.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention it is provided that the juxtaposed layers contact abutment surfaces and the abutment surfaces are inclined so that a friction, in particular a static friction between the contact surfaces and the layers is overcome. Thus, the abutment surfaces may be inclined so that a sliding friction is overcome. This means that the contact surfaces are indeed not inclined enough to overcome a (typically greater stiction), however, upon overcoming the static friction, the layers independently slide by gravity into the desired position (defined by the at least one positioning means). However, if the contact surfaces are inclined in such a way that the static friction between the contact surfaces and the layers is overcome, the layers automatically slide themselves into the desired position by gravity from the beginning.
It is preferably provided that the layers hang on the least one positioning means. The fact that the layers hang on the at least one positioning means, instead of standing on this, avoids wrinkling of individual layers. Also, layers which abut or rest against abutment surfaces can hang as long as the angle of the abutment surfaces to the horizontal is large enough to overcome the static friction. The layers would thus slip without the at least one positioning. In addition, in the case of suspended layers, a force application point of the at least one positioning means of the respective layer in the direction of fall is above the center of gravity of the layer. As a result, prevail in the majority of the situation tensile stresses that prevent wrinkling. In contrast, prevail in a position of the layers in the majority of the situation compressive stresses, which can cause wrinkling depending on the stability of the situation.
It is preferably provided that the layers are moved by gravity as far along the at least one positioning means until they each contact a contact surface. Thus, the individual layers can be easily strung together in a stack. The layers no longer have to be manually moved to the respective contact surface, but they slide by gravity along the positioning until they contact the respective contact surface.
It is preferably provided that a maximum extension of at least one of the positioned layers along a fall line of the main surface of the at least one positioned layer is greater than a maximum extent of the positioned layer along a contour line of the main surface. By this configuration, a wrinkling is additionally prevented because a hang down side of the at least one positioning or between positioning is reduced or prevented.
Preferably, it is provided that the first layer and the last layer are each an end plate, and the method comprises a step of clamping the end plates together. The end plates can be tensioned to each other by means of a tension element, for example by means of a clamping plate.
- - to penetrate passages of the layers,
- - intervene in recesses of the layers,
- - and / or to support the layers on projections of the layers,
By means of the positioning device according to the invention, the individual layers of a fuel cell stack can be positioned (centered) to one another in a simple and rapid manner without running the risk of wrinkling, for example of membrane-electrode units. The application body may be a plate, for. B. be a support plate, which provides a support surface as a contact surface.
It is preferably provided that the positioning device is designed such that the layers of the fuel cell stack are mutually suspendable for positioning to the at least one positioning means. By virtue of the fact that the layers can be suspended on the at least one positioning means, security against wrinkling is further increased.
Preferably, the angle of the contact surface to the horizontal is at least 20 °, in particular at least 30 °, preferably at least 40 °. This can ensure that a friction, in particular a static friction, between the layers and the contact surfaces is overcome.
It is preferably provided that a straight contact line of the positioning means extends horizontally or has an angle to the horizontal, which is greater than 0 °, in particular greater than 20 °, preferably greater than 30 °, particularly preferably greater than 40 °. This embodiment allows an independent sliding of the layers along the contact line to the contact surface. The contact line may extend in the direction of a longitudinal axis of the positioning means in the case of a longitudinally extending positioning means. The contact line therefore extends away from the contact surface and runs along the surface of the positioning means, via which a contact with the layers is produced. The said surface may, for. B. be recognized by a ground surface.
Preferably, the at least one positioning means comprises at least two positioning means, in particular three positioning means. The positioning means may comprise a total of three straight contact lines, which may be arranged parallel to each other. Thus, a defined positioning of the layers is possible by the positioning penetrate through openings of the layers, engages in recesses of the layers, and / or support projections of the layers on the positioning means. The positioning can z. B. positioning rods, which may also be arranged parallel to each other.
