Description
The invention relates to a method for producing a break detector and a break detector for a ceramic. The invention further relates to a ceramic tile and a body armor, each comprising a break detector.
The fracture detector is used to detect microcracks in ceramics. Ceramics have been intensively researched in their properties and constantly optimized. Today they replace traditional metallic materials in many applications. Ceramics that are characterized by high compressive strength, hardness, creep resistance and good sliding properties with high thermal and chemical resistance at the same time are referred to as high-performance ceramics. Depending on the nature of the starting materials and their processing, high-performance ceramics can furthermore be used in manifold ways as electrical and / or thermal conductors and electrical and / or thermal insulators. Examples of high performance ceramics are the oxide ceramics alumina and zirconia and the nonoxide ceramics silicon carbide, boron carbide, silicon nitride and aluminum nitride.
High-performance ceramics are used today because of their compressive strength and hardness in protective clothing and body armor, for example in bullet-proof vests. Ceramic tiles are usually part of a composite. Such a composite can be inserted, for example, in special pockets in bullet-proof vests. Correspondingly used high-performance ceramics are characterized by high strength and hardness. Here, in addition to aluminum oxide, silicon nitride and boron carbide in particular silicon carbide has proven. Silicon carbide has a high hardness, high strength, high fracture toughness and good sliding properties. Silicon carbide is also a semiconductor whose specific electrical resistance can be increased or decreased by impurities or doping. For example, the specific electrical resistance can be increased such that corresponding high performance ceramics in microwaves are used as electrical insulators.
In protective clothing and body armor, of course, the ceramic tiles are constantly exposed to mechanical stress in everyday life, even without the intervention of ballistic projectiles. As a result, even in the high-performance ceramics micro-cracks can form, which can affect the functioning of the protective clothing or body armor. It is necessary to check the integrity of ceramic tiles regularly, preferably daily or even during use. This is currently not possible because microcracks in conventional ceramic tiles must be detected with X-ray equipment.

The invention is therefore based on the object to provide a method for producing a fracture detector. The method according to the invention is intended to provide a breakage detector on a ceramic of high hardness and strength, which makes it possible with simple means in a short time to check the integrity of the ceramic. Further, it is an object of the invention to provide a ceramic tile and a body armor, each comprising a breakage detector.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by a method according to claim 1. This is particularly important in break detectors on ceramic tiles in protective clothing or body armor, so that the functionality of the protective clothing or body armor can be checked during use. It is advantageous that to check the functionality of a deposition of the protective clothing or body armor is not required. Furthermore, the method makes it possible to produce a break detector on ceramics, in particular electrically conductive ceramics.
The ceramic is preferably a ceramic tile which is produced, for example, at high temperatures (> 1000 ° C.) and / or pressures (> 10 bar), for example in a sintering process. In preferred embodiments, the ceramic contains alumina, zirconia, silicon carbide, boron carbide, silicon nitride, aluminum nitride, and / or titanium diboride. In further embodiments, the ceramic contains alumina, zirconia, silicon carbide, boron carbide, silicon nitride, aluminum nitride and / or titanium diboride and at least one elemental metal and / or semimetal, so it is a so-called cermet. A cermet of silicon carbide preferably contains 1 wt .-% to 30 wt .-% of at least one elemental metal and / or semi-metal, preferably aluminum, cobalt, chromium and / or silicon. In certain embodiments, the ceramic also contains alumina platelets, zirconia particles, silicon carbide particles, silicon nitride rods and silicon nitride platelets, mullite fibers, carbon fibers, and / or carbon nanotubes as intercalated particles. In certain preferred embodiments, the ceramic is doped. Ceramics containing alumina, silicon nitride, boron carbide and / or silicon carbide are preferred.
The paint serves as a bonding agent between the ceramic and the metal particles. In preferred embodiments, the paint forms an electrical insulator on the ceramic. The paint contains metal particles. Preferably, the metal particles contain at least 40 wt .-%, preferably at least 80 wt .-%, at least one noble metal selected from the group gold, silver, mercury, rhenium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum , Particularly preferred is silver and palladium, most preferably palladium. In preferred embodiments, the metals are present in the metal particles in elemental form or in ionic and elemental form. The paint is preferably applied over a large area on all those surfaces of the ceramic, which should later wear a conductor track. The paint with metal particles forms a layer with a thickness between 20 microns and 80 microns, preferably from about 50 microns, in which the majority of the metal particles are enclosed by the paint. The paint preferably contains a very small proportion of solvent, more preferably it is sprayed on "dry".
Preferably, the paint has a high viscosity. After application, the paint is preferably burned out. In other words, the paint preferably cures under elevated temperatures.
It is advantageous that the paint compensates for irregularities on the surface of the ceramic, whereby an exact treatment with the laser can be performed.
The paint is treated by a laser so that at least a few metal particles are exposed. In other words, a part of the metal particles applied with the paint and distributed in the paint is exposed. Some of the metal particles may already be exposed by the laser prior to the treatment of the paint, but after the treatment a larger portion of the metal particles are exposed. In the laser treatment, the paint is heated to the extent that a part of the paint decomposes and previously trapped metal particles are exposed. Exposed metal particles remain on the surface of the remaining paint. During treatment, the laser travels a path on the resist so that in one embodiment along the path of the laser, a heaped number of metal particles are exposed, while untreated portions have few exposed metal particles. In this embodiment, the path of the laser corresponds to the later trace. In another embodiment, the surfaces on which no conductor tracks are to be formed are treated by the laser in such a way that the lacquer completely decomposes and the metal particles no longer adhere to these surfaces.
The laser treatment leads in preferred embodiments to a roughening of the Paint surface, so that a subsequently formed trace better adheres.
During the plating process, a metal deposits on the exposed metal particles. The depositing metal is preferably less noble than the metal of the metal particles in the paint. In some embodiments, the laser treatment exposes so many metal particles in contact with one another that an electrically conductive structure is already formed by the exposed metal particles of the paint. In these embodiments, an electrochemical metallization for forming at least one conductor track is possible as a galvanization method. In this case, a metal is deposited in a galvanic bath with external current on the metal particles, wherein the exposed metal particles form the cathode. The anode is formed by the material to be deposited in the galvanic bath.
In further embodiments, the plating process is a chemical metal deposition in an electroless plating bath. In this case, the metal deposition is carried out initially on the exposed, preferably nobler, metal particles, which serve as catalysts for the metal deposition. In the electroless bath without electroless plating, the metal to be deposited is present as cations and is reduced to its elemental form on the catalyst by a reducing agent. The deposited metal then serves as a catalyst and continues the reaction. As a reducing agent, for example, for methanal copper, suitable for nickel sodium hypophosphite. An aqueous solution of 37% by weight of methanal reduces copper cations on the exposed metal particles, whereby the methanal is oxidized to formate in the alkaline state. A buffer holds the pH between 11 and 13, a complexing agent binds monovalent copper and prevents the precipitation of elemental copper, which results from the disproportionation of copper oxide (Cu 2 O) and would lead to copper aggregates in the electroplating bath.
As described above, in one embodiment, treatment of the paint by the laser along the path of the laser on the surface of the paint exposes a heaped number of metal particles while untreated areas have few exposed metal particles. In a time-limited galvanization process forms due to the increased number of metal particles on the surface of the paint only along the path of the laser, a conductor. The conductor has a low electrical resistivity and is thus electrically conductive. In the other embodiment described above, the at least one printed conductor only forms on the surfaces where the paint has not been completely decomposed and metal particles can continue to adhere to paint and ceramic. In this embodiment, to remove all those metal particles which do not adhere to the ceramic for lack of paint, the ceramic may be subjected to a washing step prior to galvanization. However, metal particles which do not adhere to the ceramic by means of residual lacquer dissolve in preferred embodiments already when the ceramic is immersed in the plunge bath intended for electroplating. The metal deposited during the plating process is preferably selected from aluminum, copper, nickel, iron, palladium, tin and silver.
Preferably, the formed conductor track has a thickness of between 0.05 μm and 20 μm, preferably between 0.05 μm and 10 μm.
In the following, at least one electrical and / or electronic component is connected to the at least one conductor track such that an interruption of the at least one conductor track becomes detectable. For example, an RFID transponder can be connected to the at least one printed conductor, which serves as an electrical and electronic component and makes it possible to detect an interruption of the printed conductor. If a plurality of conductor tracks are formed, the conductor tracks are preferably connected by at least one electrical and / or electronic component in such a way that practically there is a conductor track. This can also be done by a simple electrically conductive contact, which represents an electrical component. An interruption of the at least one conductor track, for example, by a microcrack in the ceramic.
In one embodiment, the at least one electrical and / or electronic component is an electrical component, for example an electrically conductive wire or electrically conductive adhesive. In such a simple embodiment, a track forms a coil or a plurality of tracks which are connected by electrical components such as electrically conductive wire and / or electrically conductive adhesive, together form a coil and a closed circuit. In other words, at least one electrical component and at least one track connect a circuit comprising a coil. An interruption of the circuit can be detected with a reader and by the principle of mutual induction or inductive coupling. In one example, the reader has a power source that supplies DC power to a microprocessor-controlled circuit. The circuit supplies a coil of the reader with resonant AC voltage. The coil of the interruption detector will be checked for proper functioning the protective clothing or body armor brought into spatial proximity to the coil of the reader. Due to this proximity, inductive coupling between the two coils occurs. The coil of the reader is powered by the circuit at natural resonant frequency with energy. By the inductive coupling between the two coils, the AC resistance and the inductive value of the coil of the reader changes, which in turn changes the natural resonant frequency of the circuit. These changes are perceived and processed by the microprocessor. If the ceramic has a microcrack which interrupts the at least one conductor track and thus the closed circuit, inductive coupling between the coils does not occur. Neither the AC resistance nor the resonant frequency changes. The microprocessor registers this and sends a signal with the information that there is an interrupt to a display unit. Due to the absence of the inductive coupling is detected that there is a break or a crack and the ceramic should be replaced.
In certain embodiments, a composite is formed from the ceramic, the break detector, and other components. In these embodiments, the method comprises further method steps, for example the application of plastic layers, preferably of plastic layers of polycarbonates or polyamides, carbon fibers, steel plates or foams.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are specified in the subclaims.
In a preferred embodiment, an RFID transponder is connected in step d) as an electrical and / or electronic component, which comprises an integrated circuit for transmitting an identifier and preferably an antenna.
In certain embodiments, the antenna of an RFID transponder is for receiving energy. This energy is stored in a capacitor which serves as an energy source for an integrated circuit for the transmission of an identifier and for a sensor. The sensor checks the integrity of the at least one track.
In a particular embodiment, the antenna comprises a coil. Inductively, energy is transferred from the coil of a reader to the coil of the RFID transponder. Such transferred alternating current is converted into direct current in a rectifier. A first partial current of the direct current flows through the at least one conductor track and possibly through further electrical and / or electronic components, a second partial current through the integrated circuit with information about the identifier. If there is an interruption of the at least one conductor track, for example due to a microcrack, then the entire current flows through the integrated circuit, which is registered in it. Depending on whether an interruption is present or not, the circuit transmits one of two possible signals together with information about the identifier. For this purpose, a current flows through an inverter into the antenna, in which the corresponding signal is transmitted from the RFID transponder to the reading device.
Typische Wellenlängen, bei denen die Antenne des RFID-Transponders sendet, sind beispielsweise 125 kHz, 134 kHz, 250 kHz, 375 kHz, 500 kHz, 625 kHz, 750 kHz, 875 kHz, 13,56 MHz, 865-869 MHz, 950 MHz, 2,45 GHz und 5,8 GHz.Typical wavelengths at which the antenna of the RFID transponder transmits are, for example, 125 kHz, 134 kHz, 250 kHz, 375 kHz, 500 kHz, 625 kHz, 750 kHz, 875 kHz, 13.56 MHz, 865-869 MHz, 950 MHz, 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz.
Preferably, the RFID transponder comprises a plastic housing, e.g. of an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer or polyvinyl chloride, and / or is adhered to the ceramic or varnish.
Preferably, the at least one electrical and / or electronic component is connected to the at least one printed conductor in step d) at a first contact point and at a second contact point of the at least one printed conductor, wherein an embodiment of the at least one printed conductor takes place in such a way that when creating a (electromagnetic) field for reading the / an RFID transponder, a small potential difference between the contact points occurs, wherein the potential difference is preferably less than 10 V, in particular less than 5 V, in particular less than 3 or 2 V.
In one embodiment, a drastic increase in a measured resistance is detected. The RFID transponder can be designed in such a way that it starts at a resistance of more than 10 kOhm, preferably more than 100 kOhm, e.g. 300 kOhm detected a break.
Thus, the transponder is protected when it creates an (electromagnetic) field, especially when reading an RFID transponder from overloading, extends its lifetime and increases its reliability.
In a preferred embodiment, the at least one interconnect comprises at least one first interconnect section and at least one second interconnect section, wherein the interconnect is formed such that the first and the second interconnect section at least partially oppositely disposed on the ceramic.
In one embodiment, a plurality of interconnect segment pairs are provided, each having a first and a second interconnect section, wherein the interconnect sections of a conductor section pair are each arranged in opposite directions at least in sections. In one embodiment, the opposing trace portion has a length of at least 50% of the total length of the respective trace portion.
It is advantageous that a large surface of the ceramic is covered, whereby microcracks on a large surface of the ceramic can be detected. On the other hand, the potential difference between the contact points or via the conductor track and the at least one electrical and / or electronic component is thus reduced.
In a preferred embodiment, the at least one conductor track is formed in step c) such that at least one electrical and / or electronic component is approximately completely enclosed by the at least one conductor track after connection in step d).
In one embodiment, approximately completely means that only a portion of the at least one electrical and / or electronic component is included, which comprises at most 200 times the thickness of the conductor track.
The smaller this section is, the larger is the area covered by the at least one track. Thus, a microcrack is detected with higher probability.
Preferably, the at least one conductor track comprises a substantially meander-shaped conductor track section.
It is also possible for a plurality of conductor track sections formed around the at least one electrical and / or electronic component to form a substantially meander-shaped conductor track section. It is advantageous that a large surface of the ceramic is covered, whereby microcracks on a large surface of the ceramic can be detected. It is also advantageous that the potential difference between the contact points or via the conductor track and the at least one electrical and / or electronic component is kept low by the substantially meander-shaped conductor track section. This is possible in particular because the meandering form requires an opposing arrangement of conductor track sections.
In a preferred embodiment, the ceramic used to make a breakage detector is at least 90% by weight, preferably at least 97% by weight, of silicon carbide.
Ceramics with a high content of silicon carbide have a high hardness, high strength, high fracture toughness and good sliding properties. This makes them ideal for protective clothing or body armor.
In a preferred embodiment, the treatment of the paint by a laser in step b) leads to a roughening of the paint.
A roughening of the paint leads to a better adhesion of the later formed conductor track on the paint.
In a preferred embodiment, the treatment of the paint by a laser in step b) by a focusing laser.
A focused laser enables particularly high temperatures and enables particularly efficient, precise and locally limited roughening.
Preferably, copper deposits on the exposed metal particles during the galvanization process in step c), wherein the exposed metal particles are preferably silver particles and / or palladium particles, particularly preferably palladium particles.
Copper is a good electrical conductor, harmless to health and a low-cost material. Silver and especially palladium have proven to be excellent catalysts for the deposition of copper in the process of the present invention.
In a preferred embodiment, at least one electrical and / or electronic component is connected to the at least one printed conductor in step d) by an electrically conductive adhesive and / or a disposable rubber having a two-sided contact layer. In certain embodiments, a plurality of formed conductor tracks are connected by an electrically conductive adhesive such that the plurality of formed conductor tracks practically correspond to a conductor track.
An electrically conductive adhesive and / or a disposable rubber with two-sided contact layer allows a particularly simple, permanent and fast connection of the at least one electrical and / or electronic component to the at least one conductor track. An electrically conductive adhesive also allows a particularly simple, durable and fast connection of multiple tracks, so that the multiple Conductors practically correspond to a conductor track. Suitable electrically conductive adhesives are synthetic resins, in particular epoxides with electrically conductive metal powder (eg gold, silver or copper powder) or pigments or carbon fibers.
Preferably, during the electroplating process in step c), a conductor track is formed.
Advantageous is the simple method and a uniform electrical resistance.
- a paint with metal particles applied to the ceramic,
- at least one conductive path galvanized on the lacquer,
- - At least one electrical and / or electronic component which is connected to the conductor track such that an interruption of the at least one conductor track is detectable.
The invention has the advantage that a fracture detector according to the invention on a ceramic with high hardness and strength, in particular a ceramic tile for body armor, is sensitive and functional. Because the integrity of the ceramic and thus the functionality of the protective clothing or body armor can be checked with a small and inexpensive reader in a quick and straightforward process. This check is possible even during use without removing the protective clothing or body armor. As a starting material for the ceramic even such a ceramic can be used, which has excellent mechanical properties, but is electrically conductive. Preferably, the lacquer insulates an electrically conductive ceramic and provides good adhesion between the ceramic and the conductor track.
