The invention relates to a light guide having a Lichteinkoppelabschnitt, an end facing away from the Lichteinkoppelabschnitt end portion and extending between the Lichteinkoppelabschnitt and the end portion light guide portion which is bounded by Lichtleitflächen such that light coupled through the Lichteinkoppelabschnitt is passed through total internal reflection to the end portion, wherein at least one outcoupling element for coupling out light from the light guide section is provided on the light guide section. In order to improve the efficiency and the homogeneity of the coupled-out light, it is provided that the end portion has a branching region in which the light guide merges into muzzle branches of at least one return arc bent back from the branching region to the branching region with the muzzle branches, in that light introduced into the return arc can be fed back into the light guide section.
Description
The invention relates to a light guide for a lighting device for motor vehicles (motor vehicle) according to the preamble of
Such light guides can be found in car headlamps or lights use. One possible application is to create an exit light distribution or luminous appearance with a line-like or curved contour. For this purpose, light is coupled through the light incoupling surface of the Lichteinkoppelabschnitts in the optical waveguide and decoupled from the light guide section in the propagation through the along a predetermined contour extending light guide portion provided on the light guide section outcoupling. Depending on the shape of the light guide section and the configuration and arrangement of the coupling-out elements, it is thus possible to achieve an emission light distribution corresponding to the specifications or an illuminated contour along the extension of the light guide section.
Here, there is the problem that it can lead to unwanted light extraction in the passage of light through the light guide, if for light rays guided in the light guide when hitting interfaces of the light guide, the condition for a total reflection is no longer satisfied locally. This effect can occur in particular in strongly bent regions of the light guide. In addition, absorption of light by the material of the light guide leads to a decrease in the intensity conducted in the light guide along the Lichtleitweges of the Lichteinkoppelabschnitt by the light guide section. In the case of the above-mentioned use of the light guides in motor vehicle lighting devices, the desired emission light distribution is achieved by means of the decoupling elements arranged on the light guide section. An undesired local coupling out of light and the absorption of light in the optical waveguide can therefore lead to an undesired decrease in the light intensity coupled out through the successive decoupling elements along the light guide section. In addition, light that arrives after passing through the light guide section at the end portion of the light guide, there usually coupled out of the light guide and is therefore not available for the generation of the desired light distribution available.
There is therefore a fundamental problem that the decoupled light distribution or the illumination image may have undesirable inhomogeneities, e.g. an undesirable decrease in intensity along the extension of the light guide or unwanted bright areas in the form of so-called "hot spots" along the light guide. Additionally, by unused light extraction, the optical efficiency of the light pipe, i. the proportion of the amount of light converted by the injected light quantity into the desired emission light distribution is reduced.
The invention has for its object to improve the optical efficiency and the homogeneity of the decoupled light distribution in said light guides and for this purpose specify a solution with the least possible design effort.
This object is achieved by a light guide having the features of
A fundamental aspect is therefore that light which has arrived in the end section is at least partially returned to the light guiding section, rather than from the end section withdraw. For this purpose, the optical fiber branches along the course, starting from the Lichteinkoppelabschnitt considered in the muzzle branches. The return bend is, in particular, a curved light guide structure, which starts from the branching area and runs back in an arc-like manner to the latter, where it opens again. The return arc directs the light entering it back into the light guide section, so that it then propagates toward the light coupling section.
The returning light can then be coupled out with the decoupling elements in the light guide section. As a result, a larger amount of light is available for the decoupling elements located farther away from the light coupling-in section. During operation of the optical waveguide with a light source, therefore, the light intensity decoupled by means of the decoupling elements is distributed with greater homogeneity along the extension of the light guide section. In this respect, an unwanted damping and / or unwanted coupling losses can be compensated by the returned portion of the light. The entire structure of Lichteinkoppelabschnitt, light guide portion and end portion with return arc can be easily manufactured in one piece, for example by injection molding. The light guide is preferably made of a transparent material such as plastic or glass.
The light guide section extends, in particular, along a guide direction viewed from the light coupling section. The end portion lies opposite the Lichteinkoppelabschnitt in the direction. Conceivable, for example, rod-like extending light guide sections or a configuration in elongated strip shape or plate shape. The light guide section may also extend in a curved manner along a curved guide curve.
The light guide section basically has two functions. It is designed for guiding light and for coupling out the light with a desired light distribution. In this respect, the light guide designates on the one hand the line of the coupled-in light away from the light coupling-in section and of the returned light away from the branching zone, on the other hand the coupling out or guiding of the coupled-out light in the desired direction.
Preferably, a plurality of decoupling elements is provided on the light guide section. The plurality of outcoupling elements are then preferably lined up along the extension of the light guide section consecutively. The decoupling elements are in particular formed as projecting over at least one Lichtleitfläche outstanding projections, for example as rib-like or prism-like projections.
In principle, a decoupling element is designed such that a portion of the light guided in the light-guiding section that impinges on the effective region of the decoupling element is deflected such that it emerges from the light-guiding section. For this purpose, the decoupling element can be configured such that the condition of the total reflection at an interface of the decoupling element and / or the light guide section is no longer fulfilled for entering into the decoupling element and optionally deflected light rays and so the respective light beam exits, if necessary, from the light guide section under refraction. A decoupling element has, in particular, a reflection surface which is designed in such a way that a light beam guided in the light guide section and striking the reflection surface is deflected in such a way that it can exit the light guide section through a decoupling surface. The decoupling surface assigned to the respective decoupling element can, for example, be provided on the respective decoupling element itself, or on a light-conducting surface opposite the decoupling element with respect to the light-guiding section.
A return bend preferably has exactly two mouth branches, with which it opens into the branching region, as well as an arc region extending between the mouth branches. The bow region extends in an arc-like manner between the mouth branches so that the return arc extends away from and back to the branch region. A return arc is limited in particular by boundary surfaces such that light is introduced under internal total reflection from the branching area in the return arc and passed back through the bent-back return arc in the branch region and thus in the light guide section. The return bends are preferably designed such that the light introduced into the return arc is returned completely and without coupling out in the return arc into the light guide section.
In its branching region, the optical waveguide preferably branches into an even number of mouth branches, which are each assigned in pairs to one another and form a return bend in that the mating branches associated with each other in pairs merge into one another with an arc region.
Preferably, the cross-sectional area of at least one of the muzzle branches is less than or equal to half the cross-sectional area of the light guide section in the branching region. With a sufficiently small cross-sectional area of the muzzle branches can the light guide in the branching area in two or more return bends pass over. In the present case, the cross-sectional area is understood as meaning the area of a sectional area which results from intersection with a sectional plane which is locally perpendicular to the extension curve of the mouth branch or the return arc or the light-guiding section.
The cross-sectional area of the mouth branches and / or of the respective return arc preferably has a square or rectangular shape. Other cross sections are conceivable, e.g. circular or elliptical.
However, the cross-sectional area may also have a more complex polygonal shape. For example, at least one return arc in at least one section (preferably in its arc region) may have a cross-section which is bounded by roof-like converging edges. These edges preferably converge in the direction away from the branching region. In this respect, the return arc can have roof-like boundary surfaces. In particular, at least one return arc is bounded in directions away from the branch region by boundary surfaces which converge roof-like with respect to a plane in which the return arc extends. The roof-like converging boundary surfaces form a roof ridge, which preferably runs along the extension curve of the return curve, in particular on the outer side of the return bend facing away from the branching region. By such embodiments, the efficiency of the return of the light can be increased. The respective return bend can also have a plurality of roof ridges running alongside each other along the extension curve of the return bend so that the cross-sectional area has a zigzag-like boundary. The roof ridges are preferably arranged in the outer region of the return bend remote from the branching region.
For a further embodiment, the end section in the branch region may have one or more end face sections extending between the mouth branches. The end face portions define the light guide section opposite to the light coupling section. The end faces preferably extend transversely (e.g., locally perpendicular) to the longitudinal extent of the light guide section.
Such an embodiment can be realized, for example, by making the return bends arc-shaped, e.g. along a semicircle arched, light guide structures are formed, which are integrally attached to an end face of the end portion. The not occupied with return bends areas of the end face then form the above-mentioned end face portions.
The ratio of the area contents of face portions and cross sections of the return arcs may influence the amount of light returned. On the other hand, the greater the ratio of the sum of the cross-sectional areas of the mouth branches on the one hand and the cross-sectional area of the light guide portion in the branch area, the greater the proportion of the returned light. This improves the efficiency of the light guide.
Preferably, the sum of the cross-sectional areas of the muzzle branches in the branching region is at least as great, but preferably greater than the sum of the area contents of said end face sections.
On the other hand, it is conceivable that the mouth branches of the return bends then directly adjoin one another in the branching region. In this case, there are no face portions between the mouth branches. In such embodiments, it is conceivable in particular that the sum of the cross-sectional areas of the mouth branches is just as large as the cross section of the light guide section in the branch area itself. Insofar it is then possible that the entire light guided in the light guide section passes into the mouth branches.
According to an advantageous embodiment, at least one of the return bends, some return bends or all Rückleitbögen bent approximately along a circle of curvature, wherein the radius of curvature of the circle of curvature is greater than the thickness of the Rückleitbogens. For an approximately circular cross-section, the thickness corresponds to e.g. the (largest) diameter of the cross-sectional area of the return arc. For example, in the case of a polygonal cross-section, a diameter of the cross-sectional area running in an extension plane of the return bend can be selected as a measure of the thickness. It has proven particularly advantageous if the radius of curvature is as large as or greater than six times the diameter or thickness. By this configuration can be prevented, the light is uncoupled from the Rückleitbogen unintentionally, if due to excessive curvature locally the condition of total reflection is no longer met. In principle, unwanted coupling occurs when the light beams conducted in the return arc impinge too steeply on the boundary surfaces, which may be the case if the return curve is excessively curved and / or the cross-sectional area of the return arc is too large.
An advantageous embodiment of the light guide is that several return bends concentric to each other at the branching section. This can be achieved, in particular, by virtue of the fact that the two mouth branches of an inner return arc open into the branching section between the two mouth branches of a further, outer return bend. Preferably, all return bends are arranged concentrically.
For further refinement, the various return bends can run in a common plane.
Between two adjacent concentrically extending Rückleitbögen a clearance gap may be provided, wherein the distance gap between different pairs of concentrically extending side by side return bends may be of different sizes. Conceivable, however, are also embodiments with equidistant return bends.
The thickness of various return bends may be different. For example, in the case of concentrically extending return bends, the thickness of an inner return bend may be less than the thickness of an outer return bend.
However, instead of a concentric arrangement of the return bends, these can also start next to each other at the branching area. It is conceivable that a plurality of return bends are arranged such that their muzzle branches open in a row next to each other in the branching region, wherein the two muzzle branches of a respective return arc in a row are each immediately adjacent to each other. In this respect, the arc areas of various return bends are then not concentric with each other, but run side by side.
Due to the configuration of the transition between the light guide section and return arc, the optical properties of the light guide can be configured. Thus, for example, an orifice or more or all muzzle branches in the course tapering funnel-like starting from the branching region. Alternatively, the muzzle branches can also widen funnel-like. Depending on the design of the transition, the return license can be improved or the parallelization of the guided light can be increased.
An advantageous embodiment of the invention is also that the light guide section is completely divided into exactly one pair of muzzle branches, which merge into each other over a particular annular arc area, i. are integrally connected to each other.
According to one aspect of the invention, at least one outcoupling element or several or all outcoupling elements are designed such that the outcoupling element also acts on the light returned by means of the return arcs. Two different types of decoupling elements can also be provided on the light guide section, a first type for decoupling the light originating from the light coupling section, a second type for the recirculated light.
The underlying object is also achieved by a motor vehicle lighting device which has at least one light source, for example LED, as well as at least one light guide of the type described above. The light source is arranged in such a way that the light which can be emitted by it can be coupled into the light guide through the light coupling-in surface of the light coupling-in section.
