Description
The invention relates to a fuel cell stack and a method for assembling such.
Fuel cells use the chemical transformation of a fuel with oxygen to water to generate electrical energy. For this purpose, fuel cells contain as core component the so-called membrane electrode assembly (MEA for membrane electrode assembly), which is a composite of an ion-conducting (usually proton-conducting) membrane and in each case a membrane disposed on both sides of the electrode (anode and cathode). In addition, gas diffusion layers (GDL) can be arranged on both sides of the membrane-electrode assembly on the sides of the electrodes facing away from the membrane. As a rule, the fuel cell is formed by a multiplicity of stacked MEAs whose electrical powers add up. Between the individual membrane electrode assemblies bipolar plates (also called flow field plates) are usually arranged, which ensure a supply of the individual cells with the operating media, ie the reactants, and usually also serve the cooling. In addition, the bipolar plates provide an electrically conductive contact to the membrane-electrode assemblies.
During operation of the fuel cell, the fuel, in particular hydrogen H 2 or a hydrogen-containing gas mixture, is supplied to the anode via an anode-side open flow field of the bipolar plate, where an electrochemical oxidation of H 2 to H + takes place with emission of electrons. Via the electrolyte or the membrane, which separates the reaction spaces gas-tight from each other and electrically isolated, takes place (water-bound or anhydrous) transport of protons H + from the anode compartment in the cathode compartment. The electrons provided at the anode are supplied to the cathode via an electrical line. The cathode is supplied via a cathode-side open flow field of the bipolar plate oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas mixture (eg., Air), so that a reduction of O 2 to O 2- takes place taking up the electrons. At the same time, the oxygen anions in the cathode compartment react with the protons transported via the membrane to form water. The direct conversion of chemical to electrical energy fuel cells achieve over other electricity generators due to the circumvention of the Carnot factor improved efficiency. The supply and removal of the operating media (fuel, oxidant and coolant) via resource supply channels, which are formed by corresponding stacked through holes of the bipolar plates and optionally the membrane-electrode assemblies. The through-holes for forming resource supply channels are disposed outside the flow fields of the bipolar plates and outside an active region of the membrane-electrode assemblies.
In the manufacture of the fuel cell, the membrane-electrode assemblies and the bipolar plates are stacked in alternating order and in a defined position relative to one another. The stacking takes place in such a way that in the active region the flow fields of the bipolar plates and the electrodes of the membrane electrode units and on the other hand in the inactive region, the passage openings for the formation of resource supply channels of the bipolar plates are superimposed as congruent.
This assembly is usually done by means of a centering equipped with mounting device (also called centering). In this case, the bipolar plates and membrane electrode units are inserted so that the centering rods are guided through special centering of the bipolar plates and membrane electrode assemblies, which are provided in edge regions in addition to the above-mentioned through holes for the formation of resource supply channels. However, the special centering holes in the bipolar plates and membrane-electrode assemblies result in undesirable enlargement of the components and thus of the fuel cell as a whole.
The invention has for its object to provide a fuel cell stack, which allows a simplified and reliable installation without additional centering and thus allows a relatively small area of the individual components. It should also be a corresponding simplified method for mounting the fuel cell stack can be provided.
This object is achieved by a fuel cell stack and a method for assembling the same having the features of the independent claims.
The fuel cell stack according to the invention comprises a first end plate, a second end plate and a plurality of stacked elements stacked between the first and second end plates. The stack elements comprise bipolar plates and membrane-electrode assemblies arranged in alternating order. At least a part of the stack elements has passage openings arranged in alignment with one another for forming resource supply channels. The fuel cell stack is characterized in that the second end plate has on its side facing the stack elements (bipolar plates and membrane electrode units) at least two blind holes which are each arranged in a region which corresponds to a through opening of the stack elements.
The blind holes of the second end plate serve for alignment (centering) of the end plate. By means of the blind holes of the second end plate corresponding to the passage openings, on the one hand it is possible for the passage openings of the stack elements (bipolar plates and membrane electrode units) to be used as centering openings during assembly. In addition to the passage openings, which are present in any case, no additional special centering openings in the stacking elements are therefore necessary for their centering during assembly. As a result, the dimensions of the stack elements and thus of the stack can be reduced overall. Due to the configuration of the centering openings in the second end plate in the form of blind holes (instead of passage openings) is also advantageously effected that after mounting the fuel cell stack openings must not be closed again to seal corresponding inner channel structures of the end plate for resource supply. This simplifies the manufacturing process.
In the context of the present application, the term "blind hole" is understood to mean a recess which ends in the component (here the second end plate), in contrast to a passage opening. The blind hole may have any shape, d. H. it is not limited to a circular shape. In contrast, "through-opening" is understood to mean an essentially straight-line opening through the component from one side to an opposite side. An "aligned" arrangement of passage openings of the stack elements is understood to mean that corresponding sections of similar stack elements are aligned along a common fictitious axis extending in the stacking direction. Accordingly, below the area of the second end plate corresponding to a through hole of the stack members, an area corresponding to an image (projection) of the through hole on the second end plate in the aligned stacked state is understood.
Preferably, the second end plate has no passage openings at least in the regions corresponding to the passage openings of the stack elements. As a result, a subsequent closure of passage openings for sealing the resource supply channels is superfluous. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the second end plate has no passage openings over its entire main surface.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the blind holes of the second end plate each have a smaller cross-sectional area than the respective corresponding passage opening of the stack elements. This allows a precise alignment of the mounting rods of the mounting device used for the assembly (see below). In addition, a smaller dimensioning of the blind holes leads to a smaller influence on the geometry of the end plate in the area of the resource supply channels, which is predetermined by requirements of the resource management, in particular the coolant and its vent. Blind holes, especially small dimensions, thus lead to a smaller functional influence of the end plate.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the first end plate (other than the second end plate) has passage openings located in areas of the first end plate which correspond to the passage openings of the stack elements. However, this does not mean that the passage openings of the first end plate must correspond to the passage openings of the stack elements with respect to their size and / or shape. Preferably, the passage openings of the first end plate are smaller than those of the stack elements. The through openings of the first end plate allow their use as centering holes during assembly of the fuel cell stack. Since they can be used to connect to a fuel cell stack fuel supply, they preferably remain closed.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, thus, the passage openings of the first End plate formed for fluid-carrying connection to resource supply means of the fuel cell. This particularly relates to their design on the outer major surface of the first end plate. For example, the passage openings in the form of screw or clamp connections can be formed here. This embodiment allows the use of the passage openings on the one hand for centering the stack components and on the other hand for the supply of equipment. In this case, the operating means usually comprise a fuel, in particular hydrogen, an oxygen-containing mixture, in particular air, and a coolant, in particular water.
According to the invention, at least some of the stack elements have passage openings for forming the resource supply channels, ie the bipolar plates and / or the membrane-electrode units. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, at least the bipolar plates on such resource supply channels forming through holes. Since bipolar plates are usually made of a metallic material, they have a good dimensional stability, which on the one hand is suitable for stable formation of the supply channels in the compressed stack. On the other hand, the dimensional stability of the bipolar plates enables precise alignment with mounting bars of the mounting device (see below). In the event that only the bipolar plates, but not the membrane-electrode units, have through openings for the formation of resource supply channels, the latter usually have a smaller area blank than the bipolar plates, which extends substantially over an active area. In this case, the membrane-electrode units thus do not protrude beyond the through-openings of the bipolar plates and do not obstruct them. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, both the bipolar plates and the membrane-electrode units have mutually corresponding passage openings for the formation of resource supply channels. In this case, the membrane-electrode assemblies preferably comprise a dimensionally stable carrier layer which encloses the active region and extends over the inactive region in which the through-openings are arranged. In this case, it is particularly preferred that bipolar plates and membrane electrode assemblies have substantially a corresponding blank with respect to their major surfaces.
- Providing a mounting device with at least two mounting rods,
- Stacking the first end plate and the stack elements, the positioning bars of the mounting device being guided through the through openings of the first end plate and the stack elements,
- - Laying the second end plate such that end portions of the mounting rods of the mounting device engage in the blind holes of the second end plate and
- - Remove the fuel cell stack from the mounting device.
The method is characterized inter alia by the fact that the through-openings of the stack elements (bipolar plates and / or membrane electrode assemblies) are used as centering holes during assembly, so that no further centering holes are required. The method is further characterized in that the second (upper) end plate is placed on the mounting rods, ie the mounting rods are not passed through through openings of the second end plate, but only engage in this. By avoiding passage openings in the second end plate in the area of the resource supply channels, a subsequent closure of the passage openings is unnecessary.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention it is provided that the mounting rods of the mounting devices comprise at least one centering rod, which is arranged and formed, an edge region of the corresponding through hole of the stacked stack elements (bipolar plates and / or membrane electrode assemblies) at least one point or at least to contact a section. The centering rods thus enable exact setting and positioning of the stacking elements relative to the centering rods and thus to each other.
Preferably, the mounting bars of the mounting device comprise at least two and more preferably three or four such centering rods.
According to a further embodiment of the method according to the invention, the mounting rods of the mounting device comprise at least one support rod, which is arranged and designed not to touch an edge region of the corresponding passage opening of the stacked stack elements. Function of the support rod is thus not the centering (alignment) of the second (upper) end plate, but their stable support. Preferably, the number of mounting rods, so the sum of centering and support rods three, more preferably four. In particularly preferred Execution, the mounting device comprises three centering rods and a support rod.
Preferably, the end portions of the mounting bars of the mounting device have a smaller cross-sectional area than the remaining portions of the mounting bars. For example, the mounting rods can taper towards their end portion. This geometry allows a simple "threading" of the stacking elements on the mounting rods and a more accurate alignment of the second end plate. In addition, the blind holes on the second end plate can be dimensioned comparatively small in this way. This is possible without affecting the geometries of internal resource paths within the second endplate.
Usually takes place after removal of the fuel cell stack from the mounting device, a pressing of the stack by means of clamping elements.
The term "stacking" or "stacking" is understood here to mean an arrangement of the individual stack elements such that they adjoin one another with their main surfaces. In this case, the individual stack elements do not necessarily have to be stacked vertically one above the other, but can also be "stacked" horizontally or inclined.
The stack elements are usually flat bodies whose dimensions along a major surface of the layer amount to a multiple of an extent of the position perpendicular to the main surface. The main surfaces are the two largest surfaces of the respective stack element, which are arranged on opposite sides of the stack element.
The passage openings of the stack elements form in the assembled state, ie in the stack, resource supply ducts. Operating means are understood to be an anode operating medium (fuel, in particular hydrogen), a cathode operating medium (oxygen-containing medium, in particular air) and a coolant (in particular water). Since a supply and a discharge channel are required for each resource, the stack elements, in particular at least the bipolar plates, usually have six such through openings, which can be used for centering. Operating medium channels can be easily distinguished, in particular in the case of bipolar plates, from centering openings or other openings. Thus, in bipolar plates, distribution channels typically lead from the anode or cathode device openings to an open flow field on the surface of the bipolar plate, which supplies a chemically active region of an adjacent membrane-electrode assembly with the reactants. The passage openings for the coolant are each connected to closed coolant channels in the interior of the bipolar plates. The resource ports of the membrane-electrode assembly have analogous positions to those of the bipolar plates, such that the resource ports typically pass straight through the fuel cell stack along the stacking direction.
The mounting device preferably comprises a mounting plate to which the mounting rods are attached.
By means of the method according to the invention, the individual components of a fuel cell stack can be positioned (centered) to one another in a simple and rapid manner without running the risk of wrinkling, for example of membrane-electrode units.
Further preferred embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the remaining, mentioned in the dependent claims characteristics.
