Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to switchable pressure sensitive adhesives comprising an adhesive polymeric moiety and a plurality of visible light curable groups attached thereto. Switchable or modifiable pressure-sensitive adhesives are pressure-sensitive adhesives whose adhesion properties can be regulated to change from tacky to non-tacky or to a state of reduced adhesion. In other words, the peel strength of the pressure-sensitive adhesive may be externally exposed, e.g. be reduced by light, by temperature change or by contact with another substance. The invention relates to such pressure-sensitive adhesives which are switchable by visible light, that is, change their state from tacky to non-tacky or to a state of lesser adhesion when exposed to visible light.
The invention further relates to a method for producing such switchable pressure-sensitive adhesives and articles comprising such pressure-sensitive adhesives, such as a pressure-sensitive adhesive dressing.
Pressure-sensitive adhesive products such as surgical or medical adhesive dressings and bandages conventionally comprise a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive that often causes local trauma at the site of attachment upon removal of the aforementioned adhesive dressings and / or bandages from the patient.
Therefore, there has been a long-felt need for adhesive dressings which, by reducing peel strength if necessary, cause less local trauma than conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives when the dressing is removed.

„Eng“ im Sinne der Erfindung bedeutet eine Polydispersität von PD < 5.Surprisingly, it has been found that, in the case of a PSA of the type mentioned at the outset, which has a polydispersity PD <5, preferably PD <4, particularly preferably PD <3, the cohesion is reduced by visible light or UV radiation with a low dose even after a short time Irradiation time is increased so much that the peel strength is reduced, and this pressure-sensitive adhesive on the other hand before irradiation has a good bond strength. Such switchable or switchable pressure-sensitive adhesives of the invention generally comprise a polymer whose molecular weight distribution is narrow by the use of regulators or by controlled radical polymerization and to which a visible light polymerizable or curable group is attached. "Narrow" in the sense of the invention means a polydispersity of PD <5.
The term "visible light curable groups attached thereto" means that they are photohardenable groups. By the term "visible light curable groups" is meant groups which undergo a reaction, that is photo-curable, with visible light adhesive polymeric structural unit, whereby the polymer crosslinked and / or its molecular weight is greatly increased.
The curable group attached thereto may be introduced into the adhesive polymeric moiety by forming a polymer comprising the adhesive polymeric moiety and the curable group attached thereto; For example, the curable group is chemically bonded to the adhesive polymeric moiety.
Weitere mögliche Blockstrukturen sind A-B-C-A, A-B-C-B-A, A-B-A-B-A u.ä.In an advantageous embodiment of the PSA of the invention, the polymeric structural unit is a block copolymer, wherein the number of blocks may be at least two or more. The polydispersity of each block PD <5, preferably PD <4, more preferably PD <3. The use of controlled radical polymerization technologies for the preparation of these block structures, a narrow molecular weight distribution of the individual blocks is given. Most preferably, the block copolymer is an A-B-A triblockcopyolmer. Other possible block structures are A-B-C-A, A-B-C-B-A, A-B-A-B-A, and the like.
In a further advantageous embodiment, the groups which can be polymerized or curable by visible light are specifically incorporated into one or more blocks. An integration into the outer blocks is particularly preferred. In the case of the abovementioned block copolymers of the structures A-B-C-A, A-B-C-B-A or A-B-A-B-A, the visible-light polymerizable or curable groups are thus incorporated into the blocks A.
Thus, according to the invention there is provided a switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprising an adhesive polymeric structural unit having a narrow molecular weight distribution of the polymer and a plurality of chemically bonded visible light-curable groups thereon.
The adhesive polymeric structural unit generally comprises a so-called polymeric "backbone". Any of the pressure sensitive polymers and / or pressure sensitive adhesive formulations based on polymers known to those skilled in the art can be used, provided that such polymers are, if desired, reactive to form adducts with curable groups such that the curable groups are attached thereto.
Preferred in the invention are those polymeric polymeric structural units which include polyacrylates and free radical polymerizable vinyl structural units. Preferably, therefore, the polymeric structural unit is obtainable by polymerization of at least one monomer Mo1 selected from the group consisting of acrylic compounds and vinyl compounds.
The polymeric structural unit is particularly preferably obtainable by polymerization of at least one monomer of the Mo1-based type based on acrylic or methacrylic acid, preferably of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, an acrylic acid ester or a methacrylic acid ester. The monomer mixture particularly suitably comprises at least 70% by weight of an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester or at least 70% by weight of a mixture of a plurality of acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid esters and / or acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid.
In the following, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid esters and methacrylic acid esters are also referred to collectively as acrylic monomers.
R1 = H oder CH3

The acrylic monomers are at least partially, preferably completely, selected from the group of monomers of type Mo1, comprising compounds of the general formula With
R 1 = H or CH 3
and
R 2 = H or an unbranched or branched, aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic, unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms. Very preferably, the alcohol radical of the acrylic acid monomers has no C =C double bonds.
Dabei ist die Vinylverbindung insbesondere gewählt aus der folgenden Gruppe:In an advantageous embodiment, the monomer additionally used is at least one Mo2-type monomer which is a vinyl compound. In particular, the vinyl compound is selected from the following group:
Vinylester, Vinylhalogenide, Vinylidenhalogenide, Nitrile ethylenisch ungesättigter Kohlenwasserstoffe.Vinyl esters, vinyl halides, vinylidene halides, nitriles of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Der Anteil des Monomeren vom Typ Mo2 beträgt bis zu 30 Gew.-%.The proportion of the Mo2 type monomer is up to 30% by weight.
Examples of particularly suitable vinyl compounds of this type include vinyl acetate, N-vinylformamide, N-vinylpyridine, acrylamide, acrylic acid, ethyl vinyl ether, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, N-vinylazlactone, N-vinylpyrrolidone, acrylonitrile, maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, styrene, without passing through them To unnecessarily limit the list. Furthermore, all other vinyl compounds which fall under the above-mentioned group can be used, but also all other vinyl compounds which do not fall into the above-mentioned classes of compounds.
R1 = H oder CH3
The polymeric structural unit is preferably obtainable by controlled polymerization, wherein the polymerization takes place as a controlled radical polymerization using at least one thioester, at least one trithiocarbonate or at least one nitroxide as polymerization regulator, as atom transfer radical polymerization or as anionic polymerization with a living polymer of structure PL (Mo1) -Me, where Me is a metal of group I of the Periodic Table and PL (Mo1) is a growing polymer block of the monomers of type Mo1, wherein the monomers Mo1 independently one or more compounds of the general formula With
R1 = H or CH3
and
R2 = H or an unbranched or branched, aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic, unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
The acrylic and / or vinyl monomers are polymerized in the presence of at least one free radical initiator via a free radical polymerization and more preferably in a controlled radical polymerization by addition with at least one thioester as a polymerization. The polymerization is preferably carried out such that the average molecular weight of the polyacrylates in the range of 250,000 g / mol up to 1,000,000 g / mol and the polydispersity PD, ie the molecular weight distribution M w / M n <4, particularly preferably M w / M n <3. The polydispersity PD is a measure of the width of the molecular weight distribution. The larger the PD, the broader the molecular weight distribution. PD is the ratio of weight average (M w ) to number average (M n ) of a polymer. The number average molecular weight (M n ) indicates which molecular weight a random molecule sampled from the sample has on average, while the weight average (M w ) is weighted by the relative weight average of the particular molecule.

Furthermore, it is also possible to use difunctional initiators, for example 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,4-dilithiobutane or 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,4-dilithioisobutane. Co-initiators can also be used. Suitable coinitiators include lithium halides, alkali metal alkoxides or alkylaluminum compounds. In a very preferred variant, the ligands and coinitiators are chosen such that acrylate monomers, such as. As n-butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, can be polymerized directly and not in the polymer by transesterification with the corresponding alcohol must be generated.
As the visible light-curable structural units of the present invention, any conventional unsaturated compounds, for example, olefinic or aromatic compounds can be used, provided that they can react with the polymeric "backbone". Free radical curable structural units are preferred; such groups include acrylates and methacrylates which, for example, can be chemically bonded to any unreacted acid, acid anhydride and / or amine groups-this listing of functional groups being incomplete rather than exhaustive-in the polymeric backbone. Curable groups that are photodimerisable may also be used to advantage, and include groups such as anthracenes, cinnamic esters, maleimides and coumarin groups. Mixtures of all previously mentioned groups can also be used. Preferred curable groups attached thereto are selected from acrylates, methacrylates, maleimides and anthracenes. Particularly preferred curable groups attached thereto are free radical curable groups such as acrylates and methacrylates. Most preferred are methacrylates such as hydroxyalkyl methacrylates wherein the hydroxyalkyl group has 1 to 6 carbon atoms, more preferably 1 to 3 carbon atoms. Particularly preferred is 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate.
Optionally, the curable group attached to the polymeric "backbone" containing an acrylate moiety may be a free-radically polymerizable vinyl group.
The amount of curable group attached in the switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive composition can vary depending on, among other things, the amount of adhesive force desired in the switchable adhesive, as it changes from tacky to tack-free. Thus, the amount of curable group attached thereto in the switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive composition, such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, may range from 0.1 to 50 weight percent of the polymer backbone, preferably from 0.4 to 40 weight percent, and more preferably 0.4 to 20 wt .-% amount. The free-radical-curable groups are very particularly preferably from 0.4 to 5 wt .-% before. The photodimerizable groups are preferably from 10 to 15 wt .-% before.
The inventive switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions may further include a free radical initiator. Any conventionally known free radical initiator may be incorporated into the Compositions of the invention can be used. The free radical initiators may be selected from the group of titanocene photoinitiators, dye / coinitiator systems such as thionine / triethanolamine, dye / borate salt systems, dye / peroxide systems and / or 1,2-diketone / coinitiator systems such as camphorquinone / tertiary amine become. Preferred free radical initiators are the titanocene initiators such as the Irgacure ® 784 from Ciba Geigy / BASF (bis (η 5 -cyclopentadienyl) -bis [2,6-difluoro-3- (1H-pyrrol-1-yl) phenyl] -titanium) ,
The switchable inventive pressure sensitive adhesives having a free radical curable bonded group are preferably provided with a photoinitiator.
According to a further feature of the invention, there is provided a process for producing a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition as described above which comprises reacting, ie chemical reaction, an adhesive polymeric structural unit having at least one unreacted carboxylic acid, carboxylic anhydride and / or amine functionality with a curable polymer , For example, comprises photocurable structural unit. A pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprising a backbone polymer having curable groups attached thereto as carboxylic acid, urea derivatives or carbamates is prepared.
In particular, there is provided a process for the preparation of a switchable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprising reacting a block copolymer backbone containing an unreacted carboxylic acid, carboxylic anhydride and / or amine functionality with a curable, for example photohardenable moiety to form a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprising a backbone polymer as hardenable groups attached thereto as carboxylic acid, urea derivatives or carbamates. The curable groups bound thereto can be attached to the polymer backbone in the end block or in the end blocks as end and / or side group and / or in the middle block or in the middle blocks as a side group or can be integrated directly into the polymer backbone.
Vorzugsweise wird dabei die klebende, polymere Struktureinheit hergestellt durch radikalische Reaktion mindestens eines Monomer Mo1, ausgewählt aus der Gruppe bestehend aus Acrylsäureestern und Methacrylsäureestern, unter Zusatz mindestens eines Initiators und mindestens eines Thioesters oder mindestens eines Trithiocarbonats als Polymerisationsregler;
mindestens einmalige Nachinitiierung mit einem Initiator für radikalische Polymerisation mit einer Pfropfwirksamkeit ε < 5 bei der aktuellen Reaktionstemperatur;
eine kontrollierte Nachiniitierung mit bis zu 2 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Monomerengemisch, eines Initiators mit einer Pfropfwirksamkeit von ε > 10 bei der aktuellen Reaktionstemperatur.The adhesive, polymeric structural unit is preferably prepared by radical reaction of at least one monomer Mo1 selected from the group consisting of acrylic esters and methacrylic esters, with addition of at least one initiator and at least one thioester or at least one trithiocarbonate as polymerization regulator;
at least one re-initiation with an initiator for radical polymerization with a grafting efficiency ε <5 at the current reaction temperature;
a controlled Nachiniitierung with up to 2 wt .-%, based on the monomer mixture, of an initiator having a grafting efficiency of ε> 10 at the current reaction temperature.
- • in
- As reaction solution, an at least 50% solution of the monomers is used with addition of the initiator or the initiators and the thioester or the thioester,
- In a temperature range from 50 ° C. to 90 ° C., the free-radical polymerization is carried out,
- During the polymerization at least once with an initiator for radical polymerizations with a low tendency to side chain formation (grafting efficiency ε <5 at the current reaction temperature) is re-initiated,
- Optionally the reaction is controlled by dilution of the reaction solution depending on the viscosity of the polymer,
- A controlled re-initiation takes place with up to 2% by weight, based on the monomer mixture, of an initiator with an increased tendency to form side chains (grafting efficiency ε> 10 at the current reaction temperature),
- Wherein the polymerization is carried out to a conversion of> 90%, preferably> 95%, particularly preferably> 98%.
Preferred initiators with a low ε value (ε <5) are those whose radicals cause no or only rarely hydrogen abstraction on the polymer chains because of their low energy content. Preference is given here, for example, azo initiators such as azobisisobutyronitrile or its derivatives, for example, 2,2-azobis (2-methyl-butyronitrile) (Vazo ® 67, DuPont) is used.
Initiators with a high side chain formation tendency (high ε value> 10) provide high grafting yields even at relatively low temperatures. Bis (4-tert-butylcyclohexyl) peroxydicarbonate (Perkadox ® 16, Akzo Chemie), dibenzoyl peroxide or the like are particularly preferably employed here.
The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of an organic solvent or in the presence of water or in mixtures of organic solvents and / or water. As solvents for the polymerization, all solvents commonly used or suitable for free-radical polymerizations can be used, in particular acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene, toluene or any desired mixtures of these solvents. Preferably, as little solvent as possible is used. The polymerization time is - depending on the conversion, temperature and initiation - between 6 and 48 h.
The pressure-sensitive adhesive polyacrylates prepared have an average molecular weight between 250,000 and 1,000,000 g / mol, the average molecular weight being measured by SEC (Size Exclusion Chromatography) or GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). The produced (co) polymers generally have a lower molecular weight distribution than the polymerizations carried out analogously with conventional regulators. The polydispersity can be reduced to a value of less than 4, preferably less than 3. Due to the low molecular weight distribution, the flow viscosity of the pressure-sensitive adhesive decreases, which makes it easier to apply and generally has good adhesion. Furthermore, the low molar mass distribution has the advantage that the proportion of short chains after the photoreaction and the resulting crosslinking is very low, which remains after removal of the PSA from the adhesive substrate no residue, which in conventional adhesives that only briefly with visible light or irradiated with low dose ultraviolet radiation and may not be desirable in medical applications.
As a result of the method selected in this way, the PSAs having the desired pressure-sensitive adhesive properties can be produced very well.
In a very preferred procedure in the inventive process, initiators which are initially added to the monomer solution are those which have a low tendency to form side chains (grafting efficiency ε <5 at the particular temperature of the reaction solution present). The initiators are preferably used in a proportion of 0.001-1% by weight, more preferably of 0.05% by weight, based on the monomer mixture.
In a further advantageous variant of the inventive method, the thioester is used with a weight fraction of 0.001% -5%, in particular from 0.025% to 0.25%. In addition, it is very advantageous in the inventive sense, if the molar ratio of free radical initiator to thioester in the range of 50: 1 and 1: 1, in particular between 10: 1 and 2: 1.
When the switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive is to be cured, in the curing reaction, which is triggered by visible light, the bound, curable groups react, resulting in an increased molecular weight of the pressure-sensitive adhesive polymer. Thus, the wavelength of the light used may be less than 700 nm, e.g. preferably between 400 and 700 nm.
The dose of light used may vary depending on the switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive composition. As daylight can also be used, the dose can also fluctuate as a result.
The pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions of the invention may also be mixed with a conventional pressure-sensitive adhesive composition to produce a pressure-sensitive adhesive which is itself switchable. Another object of the present invention is to provide a switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive hereinbefore described in admixture with a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition.
The term pressure-sensitive adhesive composition is understood to mean a composition which is known per se and comprises conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives; such conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives are non-switchable pressure-sensitive adhesives.
Thus, according to the invention there is provided a switchable composition comprising an adhesive polymeric structural unit having a low polydispersity and a visible light-curable structural unit. In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the polymeric structural unit is a block copolymer, wherein each individual block has a low polydispersity.
The pressure-sensitive adhesives of the invention are preferably pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and are particularly advantageous in the manufacture of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes and pressure-sensitive adhesive dressings, the term dressings being wound dressings, adhesive dressings and pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for medical use Application includes. The pressure sensitive adhesives may also be useful in the preparation of other conventional products which require a peelable pressure sensitive adhesive, such as masking tapes and stencils.
The acrylate PSAs may further be blended with one or more additives such as anti-aging agents, sunscreens, antiozonants, drugs, fatty acids, resins, blowing agents, compounding agents and / or accelerators.
Furthermore, they may be mixed with one or more fillers such as fibers, carbon black, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, silicic acid, silicates and chalk.
In particular for use as a pressure-sensitive adhesive, it is advantageous for the inventive process if the polyacrylate is preferably applied from the solution to a support or to a support material as a layer.
For the variants of the inventive method just presented, preferred carrier materials, for example for surgical and medical adhesive dressings and bandages but also adhesive tapes in general, are the materials familiar to the person skilled in the art, such as films (polyurethanes, polyesters, PET, PE, PP, BOPP, PVC), nonwovens, foams, fabrics and fabric films as well as release paper (glassine, HDPE, LDPE). This list is not exhaustive.
According to the invention, there is further provided the use of a composition as described above in the preparation of a pressure-sensitive adhesive dressing.
Furthermore, according to a further feature of the invention, there is provided a pressure-sensitive adhesive dressing comprising a carrier layer substantially coated on at least one surface thereof with a pressure-sensitive adhesive as described above. The pressure-sensitive adhesive coating may be a continuous or discontinuous coating, such as a patterned pressure-sensitive adhesive.
The carrier layer preferably comprises a light-blocking layer and a transparent or translucent layer. The term light-terminating is understood in particular to mean that the material is light-tight over the wavelength range in which the photoinitiator absorbs. The light-blocking and transparent layers may be glued together, or the light-blocking layer may optionally have a low-peel adhesive on its surface opposite the transparent layer.
Thus, a pressure-sensitive adhesive dressing of the invention can be applied to the skin of a patient in use. If the dressing is to be removed or replaced, the light-blocking layer can be removed. The pressure sensitive adhesive on the skin opposite the surface of the transparent layer may then be exposed to either visible light or a light source. After a predetermined time, which is preferably between 30 seconds and 10 minutes, the peel strength of the pressure-sensitive adhesive lowers and allows the residue-free and painless removal of the transparent layer from the skin of the patient.
Thus, according to the invention there is provided a previously described dressing comprising a backing layer and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, the backing layer comprising a removable, light-blocking Layer and a transparent layer between the photo-capping layer and the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, and wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer comprises a switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive described above.
All conventionally known photoprotective and translucent materials can be used in the backing layer of the dressings of the invention. Preferred dressings are those comprising a film, i.e., a thin film as the support layer, that is, both the light-blocking and the transparent layers comprise a film, although other support layers, e.g. Fabric layers can also be considered suitable.
The dressings of the invention can be made using conventional methods known in the art.
The light-blocking layer of the carrier layer may be adhesively bonded to the transparent layer or may be laminated thereon. If adhesively bonded, the peel strength of the bonding adhesive must be less than that of the tacky tacky pressure sensitive adhesive.
The dressings of the invention are particularly useful in the treatment of wounds. Thus, there is provided a method of treating a wound in a patient comprising attaching a dressing as hereinbefore described to the wound of a patient. The method may further comprise removing the dressing by removing the light-blocking layer of the dressing and then irradiating the pressure-sensitive adhesive through the transparent or translucent layer to render the pressure-sensitive adhesive non-sticky.
The polymer solutions prepared by
The coated adhesives were irradiated to change the state for the peel strength test under a halogen lamp, and the exposure time was varied. As Comparative Example PSA5, the polymer from Example 2 (B2) was also coated without photoinitiator.
As the data show, the examples of the invention have markedly improved values, i. compared to the comparative examples significantly greater differences in the peel strengths between the adhesive before irradiation and after irradiation. For the exemplary embodiments PSA2 to PSA4, in particular the value for the reduction of the bond strength after an irradiation time of 2 minutes is significantly lower than in the comparative examples. For the adhesive resin blended adhesive of Example PSA6, with higher initial peel strength, i. with particularly good initial adhesiveness, to detect an advantageously large difference both after 2 minutes and 10 minutes.
