Abstract
Description
The problem with laboratory fume hoods is the contamination of the working area, which can endanger not only the user himself but also the processed samples due to cross-contamination. In the prior art, for example, it is known for combating contamination to irradiate the working space with UV-C radiation. The disadvantage of this is that UV-C radiation is harmful to health and therefore can only be applied after completion of the work in a closed fume hood. In addition, the germs killed by the radiation remain in the working space and continue to contaminate it.
The object of the invention is accordingly to provide a fume hood and in particular a safety workbench, in which a contamination of the working space can be effectively and in a way for the user as little harmful to health and preferably already eliminated during operation of the fume hood.
The solution to this problem is achieved with the fume hood, especially a safety workbench, as described in
In its widest aspect, the invention thus relates to a fume hood and in particular a safety workbench with a work space surrounded by a housing, which can be closed with a windshield. In this respect, the device does not differ from the previously known devices. In contrast to the latter, however, at least one of the surfaces bounding the working space is provided at least in regions with a photocatalytic coating.
For the purposes of the invention, the term "fume hood", as mentioned, any type of fume hood - including any type of safety workbench, such as those of the classes I to III, as well as cleanroom or product protection workbenches such as Impfbänke. All these devices can be readily used within the scope of the invention, since the attachment of a coating in the working space in all cases without difficulty is possible.
Photocatalytic coatings are understood as meaning those coatings which, under the influence of light, are capable of triggering chemical reactions on their surface, for example decomposing organic compounds. The photocatalytic coatings known in the prior art usually consist of metal oxides such as titanium dioxide, in particular of titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Titanium dioxide is a semiconductor in which electron-hole pairs form by irradiation with light. At the surface, the electrons or holes lead to the formation of radicals, which decompose the organic compounds, often carbon dioxide and water - ie gaseous or easily removable harmless decomposition products - are formed. In addition, many of the coatings in addition to the antimicrobial so-called superhydrophilic properties. Water forms no droplets on its surface, but a thin, with the naked eye unrecognizable film, so that the surface is not fogged. The hydrophilicity promotes self-cleaning of the surface.
Basically, the higher the surface roughness, the higher the catalytic activity of the coating. Suitable coating materials are produced, for example, in the sol-gel process. The addition of specific organic compounds to the coating solution and their subsequent burning out in a sintering process leads to layers of high porosity. Alternatively, a surface enlargement can be achieved by embossing with a stamp. In addition, coatings can be produced, for example, wet-chemically, by CVD, PVD or (pulse magnetron) sputtering. Such materials are available, for example, from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Due to the properties described, the photocatalytic coatings are outstandingly suitable for coating surfaces in the working space of a fume hood. They have a high antimicrobial potential, are there for the User but harmless. They can be applied easily and over a large area, so that they can keep large areas of the working area germ-free and free of organic deposits. Depending on the type of activation, the decomposing catalytic effect can also occur when the user is working on the fume hood, so that protection against contamination is already possible during the work. There are also virtually no harmful degradation products in the workspace back. Any residues still adhering can be removed particularly easily, for example by wet wiping, because of the often superhydrophilic properties of the coating surface.
The photocatalytic coatings can also be produced as transparent layers and are therefore also suitable for coating transparent surfaces such as glass. They can therefore also be used for at least partial coating of the glass surfaces present in the working space, such as the windshield or the as a rule at least partially made of glass side walls. Additionally or alternatively, the non-glass surfaces may be wholly or partially provided with the photocatalytic coating, ie, in particular, the front wall opposite the rear wall and, more preferably, the worktop of the working space. The latter is usually particularly exposed to contamination, and the risk of contamination of users and samples placed on the worktop is also particularly high here. Therefore, it is preferable to provide the work surface as completely as possible with the photocatalytic coating. In principle, however, in all cases a partial coating, preferably in the regions which are particularly prone to contamination, may be sufficient.
To activate the photocatalytic coating is irradiated in a conventional manner with light. For this purpose, the fume hood according to the invention has at least one lighting device. This can be arranged inside or outside the working space, in the latter case expedient so that it radiates through one of the working space bounding glass walls on the coating - provided that the glass passes through the necessary wavelengths for activation. Depending on the size and arrangement of the coating, it may be necessary to use more than one lighting device. The wavelength range emitted by the illumination device depends on the type of photocatalytic coating. As a rule, these are activated by visible light and / or UV radiation. In the case of a coating which can be activated with UV radiation, it is preferable to use an activatable by UV-A radiation, since this is largely harmless to the user and activation and thus catalytic cleaning can also take place during normal operation.
The use of such photocatalytic coatings which are activatable with radiation that is not harmful to the user is generally advantageous in order to achieve a lasting catalytic and cleaning action. In this way, contamination in the working space can be eliminated immediately after their formation, so that there is virtually no contamination of the coated surfaces. In this variant, the lighting device is designed so that it lights up permanently during operation of the fume hood, so the photocatalytic coating is permanently activated. This can be implemented in a particularly simple manner if the normal working room lighting device, which as a rule emits predominantly visible light, is used for activation. But it is also possible, if necessary, additional use of a specially available for the activation of light source.
