Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing light-emitting diodes (preferably OLEDs) or photovoltaic elements (preferably organic solar cells).
In order to increase the efficiency of such elements produced on the basis of electrically conductive or semiconducting chemical compounds, it is also necessary to increase the proportion of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the organic light-emitting diodes into the environment or absorbed by photovoltaic elements. For this purpose, an enlargement of surfaces via which electromagnetic radiation is emitted to the outside or enters a photovoltaic element is carried out. With a surface structuring is also possible to scatter the electromagnetic radiation and thus the coupling or decoupling of the radiation can be improved. Since the photoactive layers, which are also referred to as absorber layers, are very thin, they can only use a part of the penetrated electromagnetic radiation to convert them into electrical energy. It is therefore also desired to improve this by scattering the electromagnetic radiation as it enters and / or within organic photovoltaic elements.
Therefore, approaches are known with which surfaces of such elements can be textured and provided with a surface structuring.
Thus, the so-called nanoimprinting method is known, in which mechanically with tools a corresponding surface structure can be formed. The time required is high, the tools are expensive to produce and subject to high wear. The structures formed thereby have limited suitably better properties for the scattering or diffraction of the incident or emerging radiation.
In addition to the embossing process and the application of lithographic processes, such. B. the interference lithography known. Several steps must be performed, which requires an increased time and effort. In addition, degradation may result from residues of the photoresist structures or from the associated removal of these structures.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a method for the production of organic light-emitting diodes or organic photovoltaic elements available with which the effectiveness or the efficiency of these elements can be increased while the effort and the required time can be reduced. In addition, a structuring of a surface of an optically transparent substrate should be reliable, repeatable and attainable with sufficiently large structure depths.
The above-described object is achieved by a method comprising the features of
The invention will first be described in general terms, then with reference to several embodiments. The individual features shown in combination in the exemplary embodiments need not be realized exactly in the configuration shown in the examples, but can be realized in the context of the present invention in other types of combinations. In particular, individual of the method steps described in the exemplary embodiments may also be omitted or other materials / substances / substance mixtures may be used.
In the method according to the invention, depressions with electromagnetic radiation emitted by at least one laser light source are formed on at least one surface of the substrate of a polymeric material. The substrate is preferably formed from a material that is transparent to electromagnetic radiation.
In a further alternative, in the invention, a coating of a polymeric material, which is formed on a substrate or disposed there, are provided on a surface with recesses.
A third possibility is to form recesses on at least one surface of a layer of an electrically conductive material. This may be a metallic layer but also an electrically conductive oxide layer. Such an oxide layer should preferably be transparent to electromagnetic radiation. These oxides are also referred to as TCO.
The three aforementioned three options can also be applied together in the various possible combinations.
The recesses form a regular arrangement of structural elements on the respective surface of the substrate. Subsequent to the formation of the recesses as structural elements, in an alternative further layers for the formation of organic light-emitting diodes or organic photovoltaic elements can be formed on a surface of the substrate. The individual layers can be applied in a known manner one after the other, for example by a PVD or CVD method or by a printing process or by spin coating on a surface of the substrate. The deposition may be on the surface patterned surface of the substrate and / or the unstructured surface of the substrate.
In a further alternative, a multilayer structure for organic light-emitting diodes or organic photovoltaic elements may be joined to the substrate. This multilayer structure comprises at least the absorber layer and two layers including the absorber layer, each forming an electrode. At least one of the layers which form an electrode is not only electrically conductive but also transparent or semitransparent for electromagnetic radiation. The transparency is intended for at least one wavelength or a usable wavelength interval, z. B. the spectrum of sunlight, be given.
The joint connection can, for. B. by an adhesive bond but also by a mounting connection, for example, using an outer frame done. In this case, the functional layers of photovoltaic elements or of organic light-emitting diodes may have been formed on a second substrate, and then the two substrates are connected to one another.
The radiation emitted by the laser light source can advantageously be directed to the surface of the substrate for the formation of the surface structuring with locally varying intensity, varying focussing, varying power, varying polarization and / or with different wavelengths. Alone or in addition, the pulse rate and / or the pulse length with which the laser radiation is directed onto the respective surface can also be varied. The possibility exists here of first forming a certain number of pulses from one direction onto the surface in the recesses, then directing a certain number of pulses, which may coincide with the first number, from another direction onto the surface which can be achieved by a rotation.
By all these features mentioned a locally varying material removal and / or remelting to form the wells can be achieved. As a result, the volume removed at each depression, the depth and the free cross section within the depressions can be influenced as well as their geometry, which can affect the arrangement of the depressions, their orientation and shape / contour. Thus, surface texture patterns with pits can be obtained in which the pits, which are distributed over a surface distributed on the substrate, are not formed uniformly. Due to the different sizes and shapes of depressions, the desired optical properties on a surface structured in this way can be further improved compared to surfaces formed homogeneously with nearly identical depressions in each case.
Thus, for example, the power can be varied locally, in which the radiation emitted by a laser light source is pulsed emitted and thereby the individual pulse lengths and / or the number of pulses that are used for the formation of individual wells are changed.
When using polarized radiation in a targeted manner, the orientation of the polarization plane can be selected accordingly. This is particularly advantageous when trench-shaped depressions are formed.
In an advantageous variant, the radiation emitted by the laser light source is radiated by a microlens array and thereby divided into a plurality of laser partial beams. These multiple laser partial beams are focused toward the respective surface of the substrate.
The emitted radiation can be focused directly on a plane that coincides with the plane of the surface of the substrate. However, the focusing can also take place in such a way that the focusing plane is arranged in the direction of radiation before or after the plane of the surface of the substrate. As a result, it is likewise possible to influence the volume of polymer material to be removed in the region of a recess to be formed on the surface of the substrate. In this case, the removed or removed volume in the region of a depression can also be influenced by the selected distance of the focal plane from the irradiated surface of the substrate. The removal is highest in the area of the focal plane. By changing the focal length with additionally used focusing optical elements for this purpose in the beam path of the radiation emitted by the laser light source and / or the individual beams, additional influence can be exerted on the removed or removed volume and the size and shape of depressions.
It can also be used microlens arrays in which the individual lenses have different focal lengths. As a result, differently dimensioned and shaped depressions of a depression structure can be obtained. The focal lengths can differ only slightly from each other.
In another advantageous embodiment variant, the laser structuring takes place in such a way that a plurality of coherent laser beams are brought into interference in a superimposition area (hereinafter also: overlap area) at a predefined angle (with two beams) or predefined angles (with more than two beams). The surface (s) of the substrate to be structured is / are then positioned at a predefined position (s) in this overlay area. The plurality of laser partial beams can be generated by means of a beam splitter from a single laser beam emitted by a laser light source and can be guided into the overlay area using beam deflectors.
The surface of the substrate is preferably structured with a multiplicity of depressions in the form of a recess structure which is periodic in the layer plane. This can be a recess structure formed periodically in one direction (ie one-dimensional) in the plane of the substrate. Likewise, however, a two-dimensionally periodic recess structure with a periodicity in two directions which are at an angle of 0 °, preferably 60 ° or 90 ° (vertical grid trench structure), can also be realized.
- • Line-like patterns with periodic intervals in the form of trenches as depressions,
- Cross-shaped patterns obtained by multiple exposure of such line patterns at specific angles of rotation (eg, rotating the substrate after irradiation with a line interference pattern of 30 °, 60 ° or 90 °),
- • combined cross-like patterns with different line spacing,
- • different arrangements of depressions (blind holes) with different distances or with equal distances or
- • Any combinations of the structures listed above.
Likewise, advantageous orders of magnitude are listed in the dependent claims for the depth and for the lateral extent of the individual depressions of a periodic depression structure to be introduced. The same applies to advantageous distances between the individual depressions of a periodic depression structure or for advantageous aspect ratios (ratio of depth to lateral extent of the individual depressions).
According to the invention, the surface of the substrate can be patterned, for example, in the order of magnitude of 50 nm to 50 μm depth extent of the introduced depressions.
The laser structuring of the surface (s) will be described in detail below. The subsequent individual steps for the production of the multilayer structure for organic light-emitting diodes or organic photovoltaic elements with the photoactive material, the materials for the electrodes can be carried out with methods (eg., PVD method or CVD method), the skilled person are also known in principle with regard to the deposition parameters to be set and arise from the materials / materials used.
With the method according to the invention it is possible, over a large area and at throughput speeds of 1 to 100 cm 2 / s, to produce the surface structures desired for the "three-dimensional" surface structures on a preferably optically transparent substrate which is formed from a polymer. The structure sizes are adaptable to differently formed organic light emitting diodes or organic photovoltaic elements, such. For tandem cells, multi-junction cells, hybrid cells, cells with alternative hole / electron blocker concepts or bulk heterojunction solar cells.
The effect produced by the active layer in the case of organic photovoltaic elements can be absorption of electromagnetic radiation, in particular in the region of visible light, and conversion of this radiation into electrical charge carriers (electron-hole pairs according to the solar cell function). It is likewise possible to design the active layer such that the energy of electrical charge carriers (for example supplied via the substrate or from the opposite side through an optically transparent electrode) is preferably recombined by these charge carriers into electromagnetic radiation, in particular in the visible region Light, is converted (functioning in organic light emitting diodes).
It can be exploited that the effectively usable surface is increased by the structural elements and thereby organic photovoltaic elements a larger proportion of can absorb incidental usable radiation. Electromagnetic radiation emitting elements can thereby be operated at the same brightness / illuminance with lower electrical current densities.
With structural elements formed in a suitable shape and small enough, the scattering and / or diffraction of the incident or emitted electromagnetic radiation can be utilized for increased absorption in organic photovoltaic elements. With electromagnetic radiation emitting OLEDs, the proportion of electromagnetic radiation emitted in the desired direction can be increased and internal losses can be reduced.
The substrate may be flexible or rigid, with the particular thickness and polymer determining this property. However, flexibly deformable substrates with which also a deformability of organic photovoltaic elements and OLEDs are possible are advantageous.
B. auch dotiert sein können).Suitable polymers from or with which substrates may be formed or coated with substrates are polyethylene, in particular polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate, polystyrene (PS), polysulfone (PSU), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a mixture of different polymers (eg. From copolymers or heteropolymers), or other types of modified polymers (which may also be doped, for example).
The laser radiation used for structuring the surface (s) can be supplied pulsed or continuously and / or with at least one wavelength in the visible, in the infrared and / or in the ultraviolet range. Nd: YAG lasers are preferably used with wavelengths in the UV, in the IR or in the visual range (266 nm, 355 nm, 532 nm or 1064 nm). Short-wave radiation is particularly preferred, with which filigree structural elements can be formed.
Recesses can be formed on the surface of a substrate so that their depth expansions h and / or their lateral dimensions l are of different sizes.
Alone or in addition to this, the surface of webs between formed recesses should have a radius of at least 10 nm at least in the edge region of the recesses. Thus, peaks and sharp edges can be avoided, which would lead to local high electrical currents there, if the surface structuring protrudes into an electrically conductive layer and there is a corresponding inverse surface structure.
With the invention, organic photovoltaic elements can be obtained, the efficiency of which is higher than those with substrates of glass not structured on the surface, although glasses have significantly better optical properties for use in photovoltaic elements than is the case with the polymers to be used according to the invention is. In the invention, it is also possible to apply a polymer structured according to the invention to a glass.
Thus, with a dimple structure in the form of parallel trenches on one surface of a polyethylene terephthalate substrate, an electric current density of 8.8 mA / cm 2 , and with a dimple structure the parallel trenches inclined at 60 ° to each other could also be formed in polyethylene terephthalate, an electric current density of 8.99 mA / cm 2 and compared to an unstructured glass, an electric current density of only 8.4 mA / cm 2 can be achieved. By a recess structure, as mentioned above, the efficiency could be increased by 6% and up to a maximum of 21% compared to unstructured substrates made of the polymer.
The surface structure formed on the surface of the substrate with the depressions formed can be transferred into at least one electrically conductive and / or electromagnetic radiation reflecting layer formed on the surface of the substrate, this layer preferably comprising an electrically conductive polymer, electrically conductive oxide or a metal can be formed.
With the invention, not only the efficiency but also the productivity of production can be increased. Structuring can be done from roll to roll.
The invention will be explained in more detail by way of example in the following.
