Abstract
Description
10.The invention relates to a method and apparatus for operating an internal combustion engine having at least two different types of fuel according to the preamble of patent claims 1 and 10, respectively.
When operating an internal combustion engine having at least two different types of fuel, the type of fuel suitable for the current operating conditions must be injected in pure form or a mixture of the at least two types of fuel into the combustion chamber, depending on the operating conditions of the internal combustion engine. In this case, it is particularly necessary to be able to carry out the change from one type of fuel to the other type of fuel as quickly as possible during operation of the internal combustion engine. The disadvantage of using conventional injection systems for the use of different fuels only to supply or remove the fuels in the low pressure region of the injection system.
Due to the design-based existing volume of the fuel-carrying components in the high pressure region of an injection system, for example, a "common rail system" of, for example, 350 ml and held in this high-pressure area volume flow of the change of fuel grade ultimately takes place for injection into the combustion chamber only after a considerable time lag the change of the fuel grade in the supply in the low pressure region of the injection system. In addition, only in a part of the high-pressure region, for example in the high-pressure pump, a mixing and recycling of the fuels in the low-pressure region of the injection system takes place, while for example in a "rail tube" of a common rail system essentially only the fuel actually injected for combustion tracked or is replaced.
The time lag when changing the fuel type in the supply in the low-pressure region to the actual injection into the combustion chamber is essentially dependent on the type of injection system, the geometry of the fuel-loaded components and the currently injected fuel volume per unit time. For a conventional common rail system in the application to an example 6 cylinder diesel engine with 12 liter displacement and 350 kW power at a specific fuel consumption of for example 200 g / kWh, the time from changing the fuel grade directly at the feed to the high pressure pump at, for example, 350 ml System volume in the high-pressure range up to an at least 90% change in the fuel grade at the injectors at full load approximately 15 s. This period of time scales with the fuel consumption per time and is therefore 20 times higher in idle, ie in the range of 5 minutes and more.
Come as fuels such as diesel and vegetable oil are used at sufficiently rapid discrimination of the operating conditions and corresponding change of the supplied fuel in the low pressure range, these time latencies until the actual change of fuel grade in the injection into the combustion chamber for the safe and long-term stable operation of the engine sufficiently and easily ,
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a method and an associated device which enables a rapid change from one type of fuel to another type of force in a distribution pipe of an injection system. The object is achieved on the basis of the features of the preamble of claim 1 and 10 respectively by its characterizing features.
The essential aspect of the method according to the invention can be seen in the fact that after a change from, for example, the first fuel grade to the second fuel grade or vice versa, a defined volume of fuel is removed from the manifold via a valve connected to the manifold. Particularly advantageous injection systems can be provided by means of the described method and the associated device, in particular in heavy commercial vehicles with " Common Rail "diesel engines, retrofitted quickly and easily.
According to the prior art, the fuel pressure in the rail tube is set, for example via a Mengenzumesseinheit. The sensor used for the control loop is a rail pressure sensor. The Mengenzumesseinheit leads from the low pressure region of the injection system of the high pressure pump just as much fuel volume that the currently set in the control unit rail pressure is corrected correctly. This is the control side so only indirectly via rail pressure sensor depends on the volume of fuel flowing through the injectors. The rail pressure is based on the individual injection process quasi static and can, for example, in a range of 500 bar (idle) to 2000 bar (full load) are. The volume of fuel actually injected by the injectors for combustion is controlled via the rail pressure and the opening time of the injector. Both are defined by means of the control unit depending on various operating parameters, for example via maps.
Starting from a common rail injection system, a further high-pressure valve is attached to the rail tube or distributor tube according to the invention functionally parallel to the injectors. By means of this valve, a definable fuel volume per time can be removed from the high pressure area by means of an electronic control unit. Advantageously, it can be used for a modified injector, comparable to the injectors used for the injection into the combustion chamber. For the control, a control unit for just these injectors can be used as well. The control routine must be adapted according to the application. This is dependent on the fuel pressure in the rail tube or manifold and the drive time of the injector to be discharged through the injector volume adjustable. Common Rail systems work with quasi-static rail pressure, regardless of engine speed and position of the piston, so that volume can flow out at any time via the additional valve.
The additional valve thus makes it possible at any time during the operation of an internal combustion engine with common rail injection system to be able to extract a precisely definable volume of fuel from the high-pressure region, for example the rail tube. Due to the existing control loop with rail pressure sensor and Mengenzumesseinheit just this volume is tracked by the existing system from the low pressure region of the injection system. In compliance with the maximum volume which can be regulated by the quantity metering unit, this is done without influencing the rail pressure.
Advantageously, when changing from one type of fuel to another type of fuel in the low-pressure region of the injection system, the time offset up to an at least 90% change in the type of fuel at the injectors can thus be completed quickly.

In addition, developments, advantages and possible applications of the invention also result from the following description of the embodiments and from the figure. In this case, all described and / or illustrated features alone or in any combination are fundamentally the subject of the invention, regardless of their summary in the claims or their dependency. It is expressly understood, however, that the invention should by no means be limited to the examples given.
The FIGURE shows a schematic block diagram of a device according to the invention for operating an internal combustion engine having at least two types of fuel, wherein the internal combustion engine has an injection system, preferably a common rail injection system. In the following, the internal combustion engine is referred to as a series engine SM. The relevant components of the series engine SM are provided in the figure by means of a dashed line framing, wherein the entire volume of existing in the series engine SM fuel-carrying components is designated by VSM.
The series engine SM has, for example, a low-pressure system ND for the fuel supply. This can be configured differently depending on the application. Via the line L1 fuel Kn is removed from the low pressure system ND via a Mengenzumesseinheit ZME and a defined fuel volume KV via a line L2 from the Mengenzumesseinheit ZME to the high pressure pump HP out. By the high-pressure pump HP, the fuel is conveyed via a line L3 to a manifold RR, which is also referred to as a rail tube. Via the distributor pipe RR, the injectors I1 to In of the injection system assigned to the respective combustion chambers B1 to Bn are connected via a plurality of lines EL1 to ELn. For an exemplary series engine SM with 6 cylinders and thus a first to sixth combustion chamber B1 to B6, for example, first to sixth lines EL1 to EL6 and first to sixth injectors I1 to I6 are provided.
Via line L4, a pressure sensor PS is connected to the manifold RR, which generates a measurement signal p, which indicates the pressure generated by the high-pressure pump HP in the manifold RR pressure of the located in the manifold RR fuel Kn. The pressure signal p is evaluated via the electrical connection line S1 in a control unit SGR by means of an evaluation routine SAR and, for example, a comparison of the current measurement signal p is made with a desired value psoll and / or linked with other external sensor signals extSR. Via the electrical connection line S2, the volume KV of the fuel Kn metered via the quantity metering unit ZME of the high-pressure pump HP is set. The Mengenzumesseinheit ZME is connected by a line L5 to the low pressure system ND of the series engine SM. Via the control unit SGR and the control line S2, the volume KVR of the fuel Kn is also set, which is to run back into the low-pressure system ND. By this control circuit thus prevailing in the manifold RR pressure p can be adjusted to a setpoint psoll.
The injectors I1 to In serve to inject the fuel Kn from the distributor pipe RR into the respective combustion chamber B1 to Bn. For this purpose, the injectors I1 to In are connected via the control lines SI1 to SIn with a further control unit SGI, which depending on the signals of several different external sensors extS by means of a further evaluation routine SAI each limited time a defined fuel volume KVI1 to KVIn in the combustion chamber B1 to Bn drain. In that regard, the system described corresponds to an exemplary conventional series engine SM.
The low-pressure system ND according to the invention is now preceded by a system for supplying different types of fuel, in the present embodiment, a first fuel grade K1 and a second fuel grade K2. Here, the first fuel K1 is included in a first fuel tank KST1 and the second fuel K2 in a second fuel tank KST2. The first fuel grade K1 and / or the second fuel grade K2 are supplied via a first or second line KL1, KL2 a fuel control unit KRE. The fuel control unit KRE supplies the low-pressure system ND of the series engine SM with the first fuel grade K1 or with the second fuel grade K2 or with a variable mixture Kn of both fuel types K1, K2. The supply of the fuels K1, K2, Kn via a line L6 and the return of the fuel KnR from the low pressure system ND via line L7. This arrangement corresponds to a conventional 2-tank system.
According to the invention, an additional electrically controllable valve Vab is connected to the distributor pipe RR via a line Lab. This valve Vab has a return line IR to the fuel control unit KRE. The valve Vab is connected by means of a control line Sab to a control unit SGV, which has an evaluation routine SAV. In addition, a sensor line SKRE to the fuel control unit KRE is provided with which the currently supplied fuel type Kn is queried, as well as connections to various other external sensors extSV exist.
The control unit SGV controls by means of the evaluation routine SAV, in particular on the basis of the sensor signals extSV and queried by the fuel control unit KRE fuel type Kn, the outflow of a defined volume KVab from the manifold RR. At the same time via the control unit SGR a readjustment of the fuel pressure p in the manifold RR.
Advantageously, with the method according to the invention, in particular after a change from, for example, the first fuel grade K1 to the second fuel grade K2 at the fuel control unit KRE and knowledge of the total volume of the fuel-carrying components VSM in the series engine SM by discharging a defined fuel volume KVab from the manifold RR via the valve Vab existing in the series engine SM fuel K2 be replaced quickly by the current fuel grade K1.
The invention has been described above by means of an embodiment. It is understood that numerous modifications and variations of the invention are possible without departing from the inventive concept.
