Description
The present invention relates to a method for charging a battery according to the preamble of patent claim 1 and a device designed therefor.
Conventional battery charging methods usually work according to the so-called CCCV method, i.e. the battery is initially charged in a first charging phase with a constant charging current ("constant current" = CC) until the charging voltage reaches a certain threshold value and then in a second charging phase with a constant charging voltage ("constant voltage" = CV). In the second charging phase, the charging current continues to decrease and the charging is usually stopped when the charging current falls below a certain threshold value.
The CCCV method is used to protect batteries from excessive currents during the constant current phase and from excessive voltages during the constant voltage phase. Both excessively high charging current and excessively high charging voltage can significantly reduce the service life of the battery. However, excessively high charging voltage is only harmful if the so-called inherent equilibrium voltage (so-called "open circuit voltage = OCV) exceeds a certain level, as this is the cause of internal battery decomposition and degradation processes. Furthermore, battery manufacturers usually specify a voltage limit (U max ) in addition to the maximum permissible charging current (I max ) and the maximum permissible equilibrium voltage (OCV max ), which must not be exceeded even when the charging current is loaded. This voltage limit U max is higher than the value of OCV max .
This previously known CCCV method means that fully charging a battery with a maximum permissible charging current takes significantly longer than theoretically possible, since the maximum permissible charging current must be reduced as soon as the measured battery voltage reaches the so-called end-of-charge voltage. In particular, if rapid charging is desired, this means that lead-acid batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries or lithium-ion batteries are only charged to around 80% or less after a charging time of around one hour. It would be desirable to achieve faster charging of the batteries, particularly in applications where the battery needs to be charged quickly and as completely as possible, such as in electrically powered vehicles or portable computers.

Based on this, the invention is based on the object of providing a method for charging a battery which enables the battery to be charged as quickly as possible and at the same time avoids damage to the battery due to excessive voltage values.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features listed in claims 1 and 5. Advantageous developments of the invention emerge from the subclaims.
A minimum selection is therefore made from three possible charging voltage curves so that the charging process can always be carried out with a maximum permissible charging voltage in order to achieve the highest possible charging current.
The term (R i * I lad / k) is a model for the minimum conceivable voltage increase due to the charging current I lad . The safety factor k ensures that, on the one hand, the battery voltage does not exceed the value OCV max and, on the other hand, that in the case of an energy storage device consisting of a large number of individual cells - with varying internal resistances - none of the individual cells exceeds the cell limit (OCV max / number of cells when the cells are connected in series).
According to a second advantageous development of the invention, k is selected such that in the first charging phase U 2 is greater than U max , so that in the second charging phase charging takes place with the charging voltage U max , which is followed by a third charging phase with which charging takes place according to the voltage U 2 = OCV max + (R i * I lad ) / k. In this embodiment, U 2 is initially - during the constant current charging phase - greater than U max .
In this embodiment, as soon as U 1 exceeds U max in the constant current charging phase and the constant current charging phase is thus ended, the minimum selection unit switches to U max (since U 2 is still greater than U max at this time). The charging process is therefore continued in the second charging phase with a constant charging voltage U soll = U max , with the charging current I lad decreasing more and more. U 2 also decreases accordingly. As soon as U 2 becomes smaller than U max , the minimum selection unit switches from U max to U 2 , resulting in a charging voltage curve that asymptotically approaches OCV max from above.
The value for the factor k depends on the battery parameters, in particular U max , the maximum permissible charging current I max and the internal battery resistance R i and the desired charging behavior. This is preferably between 1 and 5, more preferably between 1 and 2.
