Stand der TechnikState of the art
Conventional motor vehicles have battery modules for supplying a starter and other consumers with electrical energy. Electric vehicles have battery modules to supply a traction motor and other consumers with electrical energy. A generic battery module comprises a plurality of battery cells, which are connected in series, for example.
A generic battery module also comprises several switching units with switches to control a current flow through the battery cells. By means of the switching units, for example, a battery cell can be switched on, that is to say switched in a series circuit of several battery cells, and bypassed, that is to say removed from such a series circuit. A generic battery module also includes a management system which monitors the operation of the battery cells and controls the switching units in such a way that the battery cells are operated safely and sustainably with regard to their service life.
The performance of a battery cell deteriorates with increasing aging. It is known that the aging conditions of battery cells in the same battery module do not develop uniformly. Thus, battery cells with significantly different aging states can be present in a battery module. With increasing aging of a battery cell, in particular a maximum current which the battery cell in question can deliver decreases.
The maximum currents of the individual battery cells within a battery module can therefore be different. When all battery cells are connected in series, the highest possible current that the battery module can deliver corresponds to the lowest of the maximum currents of the individual battery cells. A possible output power of the battery module is thus limited by that battery cell which has the lowest of the maximum currents of all battery cells.
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
A method is proposed for operating a battery module, in particular for a motor vehicle, which supplies an output voltage. The battery module has a total number of battery cells, each of which supplies a cell voltage. The battery module also has a number of switching units, each of the battery cells being assigned a switching unit. The associated battery cell can be switched on and bridged by means of the switching unit. The battery module also has a management system for monitoring the battery cells and for controlling the switching units.
- First, the cell voltages of the individual battery cells are measured.
- The maximum currents of the individual battery cells are also determined. Battery cells with a high degree of aging and defective battery cells have a reduced maximum current which the battery cell in question can deliver.
Possible output powers of the battery module for defined topologies of the battery module are then calculated. The possible output power of the battery module for a defined topology corresponds to a product of the output voltage of the battery module with the greatest possible current that the battery module can deliver.
This is followed by a selection of the topology of the battery module in which the output power of the battery module is maximum. The switching units are then preferably controlled in such a way that the selected topology is generated.
The output voltage of the battery module corresponds to a sum of the cell voltages of the battery cells connected in series within the battery module. The greatest possible current that the battery module can deliver corresponds to the lowest of the maximum currents of the battery cells connected in series within the battery module.
A first topology of the battery module is advantageously defined, which represents a serial connection of the total number of battery cells. In this case the output voltage corresponds to the Battery module of the sum of the cell voltages of the total number of battery cells. The highest possible current that the battery module can deliver corresponds in this case to the lowest of the maximum currents of the total number of battery cells.
At least one further topology is also advantageously defined, which represents a serial connection of a partial number of battery cells which is smaller than the total number. In this case, the output voltage of the battery module corresponds to the sum of the cell voltages of the partial number of battery cells. The greatest possible current that the battery module can deliver corresponds in this case to the lowest of the maximum currents of the partial number of battery cells.
The partial number of battery cells is preferably one less than the total number of battery cells. In this case, all but one of the battery cells are connected in series within the battery module.
Jede der Batteriezellen liefere eine Zellenspannung von etwa 3,85 V.The method according to the invention is explained below using two numerical examples. Let the total number of battery cells be thirteen, so the battery module has thirteen battery cells. Each of the battery cells deliver a cell voltage of around 3.85 V.
In a first numerical example, one of the battery cells has a maximum current of 100 A. The remaining battery cells each have a maximum current of 200 A.
In the first topology of the battery module, which is a serial connection of the total number of battery cells, the output voltage of the battery module is around 50.05 V. The maximum possible current that the battery module can deliver is 100 A. The output power of the battery module is therefore 5050 W. .
A second topology is defined, which represents a serial connection of a partial number of twelve battery cells. The battery cell that has the lowest maximum current of 100 A in the present case is bridged. In the second topology, the output voltage of the battery module is around 46.20 V. The maximum possible current that the battery module can deliver is 200 A. The output power of the battery module is therefore 9240 W.
In the first numerical example, the output power of the battery module is maximum in the second topology. Therefore the second topology is chosen. The switching units are therefore controlled in such a way that the battery cell which has the lowest maximum current of 100 A in the present case is bridged and the remaining battery cells are connected in series.
In a second numerical example, one of the battery cells has a maximum current of 190 A. The remaining battery cells each have a maximum current of 200 A.
In the first topology of the battery module, which is a serial connection of the total number of battery cells, the output voltage of the battery module is around 50.05 V. The maximum possible current that the battery module can deliver is 190 A. The output power of the battery module is therefore 9595 W. .
A second topology is defined, which represents a serial connection of a partial number of twelve battery cells. The battery cell that has the lowest maximum current of 190 A in the present case is bridged. In the second topology, the output voltage of the battery module is around 46.20 V. The maximum possible current that the battery module can deliver is 200 A. The output power of the battery module is therefore 9240 W.
In the second numerical example, the output power of the battery module is maximum in the first topology. Therefore the first topology is chosen. The switching units are therefore controlled in such a way that all battery cells are connected in series.
A battery module for a motor vehicle is also proposed. The battery module comprises a total number of battery cells, each of which supplies a cell voltage. The battery module also includes a number of switching units. A switching unit is assigned to each of the battery cells. The number of switching units thus corresponds to the total number of battery cells in the battery module.
The associated battery cell can be switched on and bridged by means of the switching unit. A battery cell is connected when it is electrically connected in series with other battery cells of the battery module. A battery cell is bridged if it is not electrically connected in series with other battery cells.
Different topologies of the battery module can be generated by appropriate control of the said switching units of the battery module. For example, a first defined topology can be generated which represents a serial connection of all battery cells of the battery module. For example, a further defined topology can also be generated, which is a serial interconnection of less than all battery cells of the battery module.
The battery module also includes a management system for monitoring the battery cells and for controlling the switching units. The management system is connected to the battery cells and to the switching units, for example by means of a communication system.
According to the invention, the management system has a measuring unit for measuring cell voltages of the battery cells. The management system also has a determination unit for determining maximum currents of the battery cells. The management system also has a computing unit for calculating possible output powers of the battery module for defined topologies of the battery module.
According to the invention, the battery module can be operated with the method according to the invention. For this purpose, the management system has, for example, a processor and a memory area in which the corresponding program code is stored.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the management system also has a control unit for controlling the switching units of the battery module.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, each of the switching units has a changeover switch. The changeover switch has a first switch position and a second switch position. The changeover switch is connected to the associated battery cell in such a way that in the first switch position the battery cell is bridged by the changeover switch and that in the second switch position the battery cell is switched on by the changeover switch.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, each of the switching units has a first on switch and a second on switch. A power switch is permeable to a current in a closed state. In an open state, a switch for a current is blocking. The first switch is electrically connected in series with the associated battery cell. The second on-switch is electrically connected in parallel to the series circuit comprising the associated battery cell and the first on-switch.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the switches of the switching units are designed as field effect transistors, in particular as metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors, that is to say MOSFETs.
A motor vehicle is also proposed which comprises a battery module according to the invention, which is operated with the method according to the invention.
Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
By means of the method according to the invention, a battery module according to the invention can be operated with a plurality of battery cells in such a way that the output line of the battery module is at a maximum. A defective battery cell or a battery cell with a high degree of aging and a low maximum current only insignificantly reduces the output power. The highest possible current that the battery module can deliver does not necessarily correspond to the lowest of the maximum currents of the individual battery cells. By bridging exactly one battery cell, the output voltage of the battery module drops only insignificantly.
