Description
The present invention relates to a method for applying a resistive layer in the form of a noble metal thin film to a substrate, and to a method of manufacturing a temperature sensor whose resistive layer is formed by the noble metal thin film, and more particularly to a thin film thin film deposition method. Platinum layers on ceramic substrates by means of special galvanic coating for the production of platinum temperature sensors.
Thin-film temperature sensors, such as platinum temperature sensors, have been manufactured in various embodiments for many years and used for precise temperature measurement tasks.
In addition to the use of platinum resistance tracks, other metals can be used for the resistance path.
Likewise, gold-plated nickel wires are used. Alternatively, the wires are provided with a noble metal coating, for example a nickel wire with a platinum coating. For special applications, eg. As high-temperature applications are used as connecting wires pure precious metal wires or wires of a precious metal alloy, as they do not oxidize even at the higher process temperatures. Particularly suitable noble metal materials are platinum, palladium or silver, and the preferred noble metal alloy used is a gold-palladium alloy.
For the coating of the (ceramic) substrates with platinum, various methods are known, which are used by manufacturers of platinum temperature sensors. Vacuum methods are known, for. As vapor deposition or sputtering (sputtering), which are commonly referred to as thin film technology. In this case, for reasons of stability, layer thicknesses between about 0.5 μm and 1.5 μm film thickness are used in the production of the platinum temperature sensors.
In the so-called thick-film technique, platinum thick-film pastes are printed onto the substrates by means of screen printing technology and baked at high temperatures, typically at about 800 ° C. The advantage of this approach is that also Platindickfilmstrukturen, z. B. resistance meander, directly can be printed on the substrate. However, the achievable layer thicknesses are usually hardly thinner than 3 microns and the printed web widths hardly narrower than 80 microns. Sensors with small dimensions, for example, with a width of 1.2 mm and a length of 4 mm and higher resistance ratings, z. B. Pt 1000 are thus not feasible in the thick film technology. In a modified thick film process with special platinum pastes, so-called resin pastes, platinum layers can be produced in thin-film quality, since in this approach, the platinum in atomic form, similar to the vapor deposition or sputtering, deposited on the substrate.
The methods mentioned are well suited for the production of platinum films, each of the methods mentioned having specific advantages, but all methods also entail disadvantages. In the case of the thick-film method, the abovementioned limitation to larger sensor dimensions and small resistance values must be mentioned in particular. In the thin-film process, in particular the high investment costs associated with vapor deposition and sputtering and the high platinum material costs are disadvantageous, the latter resulting from the fact that a high proportion of the very expensive noble metal is deposited outside the substrate during the coating process. The modified thick-film process with resin pastes is more favorable compared to the vapor deposition and sputtering processes, in particular with regard to the installation costs and with regard to the material consumption. Due to the required high baking temperatures, platinum layers which fulfill the required properties for the production of platinum sensors in accordance with the DIN standard are hardly possible with layers smaller than 1 μm, in particular it is difficult to obtain platinum layers with a thickness significantly below 1 μm (eg 0.8 μm and less) and with a temperature coefficient of 3850 ppm / ° C, as required for the production of the above-mentioned platinum sensors according to the DIN standard.
Based on this prior art, the present invention seeks to provide an approach that allows the production of temperature sensors with the required properties at a reduced cost of materials.
This object is achieved by a method according to claim 1 and by a method according to claim 15.
- (a) Erzeugen einer leitfähigen Grundbeschichtung aus einem Edelmetall auf einem Substrat;
- (a) forming a conductive base coat of a noble metal on a substrate;
- (b) reinforcing the base coat to a desired total thickness of the thin film by electrodepositing the noble metal on the base coat; and
- (c) performing a temperature treatment of the produced thin film for a period of 30 minutes to 180 minutes at a temperature between 1100 ° C and 1400 ° C.
- - generating a resistive layer based on a thin film deposited on a substrate according to the method of the invention; and
- - Connecting a lead wire with the resistance layer.
The present invention is based on the finding that the above-described disadvantages of the methods known in the prior art for producing resistance paths for temperature measuring sensors or temperature sensors can be avoided by using, instead of these conventional, expensive methods, a galvanic method which, for example, the deposition the platinum layers in an electrolytic solution allows galvanically to a ceramic substrate. By means of the method according to the invention, preferably layer thicknesses in the range between 0.5 μm and 1 μm can be realized, which fulfill the required properties for the production of temperature sensors according to the DIN standard, in particular the required properties with regard to the temperature coefficients.
The advantage of the present invention over conventional methods is that due to the achievable, thinner layer thicknesses of the material consumption is significantly reduced, which is essential in particular due to the high prices of precious metals, such as platinum. A further advantage is that the material consumption is further reduced by the fact that the applied primer coating defines that region on the substrate on which it is intended to be electrodeposited. On other, non-metallized surfaces, no metal precipitates out of the electrolytic solution, so that it is ensured that the noble metal is deposited only at the point at which a corresponding production of a thin film is also desired. The disadvantages described in the prior art regarding the precipitation of material outside the substrate thus do not occur in the method according to the invention, which also contributes to the reduction of material consumption and thus to a cost saving in the production of the sensors.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the noble metal thin film is initially formed to a certain desired thickness and subsequently patterned, if desired, to provide, for example, a meandering resistive layer for a temperature sensor. This resistance layer can then be contacted in the usual way with connecting wires. Alternatively, the pads of the resistor track may be provided at opposite ends of the substrate if the temperature sensor is of the SMD type. In another embodiment, it is provided that the base coat initially already according to the desired resistance layer form, for. B. meandering, structure, so that in the subsequent galvanic amplification process, the precious metal is deposited only on the structured noble metal base coating, so that the subsequent patterning processes can be omitted. In order to ensure a uniform current density during the galvanic amplification process, it may be provided to connect the structured base coating to a power source at several connection points.
According to a further exemplary embodiment of the invention, it is provided to monitor the thickness during the galvanic reinforcement, so that, when a predetermined thickness, for example a thickness between 0.4 and 0.6 μm, is reached, the galvanic process is interrupted and an intermediate temperature treatment is carried out. to reduce internal stresses in the electrodeposited layers.
In yet another embodiment, rather than producing high purity noble metal layers, it may be desirable to produce doped noble metal layers. This can be achieved by appropriate doping with other metals, preferably from the same chemical group from which the noble metal originates. In this case, either a doping of the base coating can take place and / or the electrolyte used can be modified according to the desired doping. Such a procedure is desirable, for example, if a temperature coefficient of the temperature sensor to be produced should have a predetermined, for example, lower value than a temperature sensor made of a pure noble metal.
Further embodiments of the present invention are defined in the subclaims.
Es zeigen:Embodiments of the invention are explained below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Show it:

B. Diammino-dinitrito-platin(II) Pt(NH3)2(NO2)2 oder Tetrammino-platin(II)-sulfat Pt(NH3)4SO4.After the platinum base coat has been vapor-deposited, this base coat is contacted with a power source in step S104, and in step S106, the substrate with the platinum base plated thereon is introduced into a platinum electrolyte solution. According to embodiments of the invention, the platinum electrolytes contain the platinum in the form of stable, but very different complexes, for example in the form of acidic electrolytes, for. B. Hexachloroplatin (IV) acid H 2 PtCl 6 · 6H 2 O or platinum (IV) chloride PtCl 4 · 5H 2 O, or in the form of alkaline electrolytes, eg. B. Diammino dinitrito-platinum (II) Pt (NH 3 ) 2 (NO 2 ) 2 or tetrammino-platinum (II) sulfate Pt (NH 3 ) 4 SO 4 .
According to an embodiment of the invention, in step S108, during the growth of the base coat, the thickness of the grown platinum thin film is monitored. If it is determined in step S110 that the platinum thin-film thickness is about 0.5 μm, an intermediate temperature treatment is carried out in step S112. The reason for the intermediate temperature treatment carried out in step S112 is the fact that high internal stresses can occur in the layers deposited from the platinum electrolyte solutions (in particular in the layers deposited from the strongly acidic platinum electrolyte solutions), which reduce the adhesion to the substrate and may even lead to a flaking of the platinum layer or to cracks in the platinum layer. Therefore, when layer thicknesses greater than about 0.5 μm are achieved, the intermediate temperature treatment shown in step S112 is performed at a temperature between 600 ° C and 900 ° C for a period of about 10 minutes to 60 minutes, preferably 30 minutes to reduce these internal tensions. Thereafter, the process returns to step S108 and the electroplating is continued until the desired total layer thickness is reached. At this point, it should be noted that step S112 is repeated if the layer thickness additionally grown after the first intermediate temperature treatment step has again reached 0.5 μm. Steps S108 to S112 are repeated until it is determined in step S114 that the desired total thickness, e.g. B. about 1 micron, is reached. Subsequent to achieving the total thickness, a final temperature treatment is performed in step S116. The temperature treatment performed in step S116 is carried out at a temperature between 1100 ° C and 1400 ° C for a period of about 0.5 hours to 3 hours, and is required to provide necessary stability as well as the prescribed temperature coefficients, e.g. B. 3850 ppm / ° C for the DIN characteristic of the temperature sensors to be produced.

The present invention has been described above with reference to an embodiment in which structuring of the thin film is performed only after the formation thereof. In an alternative embodiment, it may be provided to pattern the base coat, which consists for example of a 0.1 micron thin platinum layer, before its galvanic reinforcement, i. H. By means of known photoresist and plasma etching technologies, a resistance meander can already be produced in the basecoat so that subsequently only the structured platinum film webs of the basecoat are galvanically reinforced to the desired layer thickness. The advantage of this approach is that in addition platinum material can be saved, and also the manufacturing time can be reduced because shorter etching times are required because at this time the platinum film has only a small thickness, namely the thickness of the base coat, so that Etching the layers is much faster than etching the entire layer. In order to ensure a uniform current density during the electrodeposition, provision may be made for the structured metallization to be connected to the power source at several points.
In other embodiments, it may be desirable to set the temperature coefficient to a value other than the DIN value, for example to a lower value. This can be achieved by targeting the platinum layers selectively with other platinum group metals, e.g. With rhodium, to produce appropriately doped platinum layers. This can be achieved by using an already doped base coating, so that a distribution of the dopants in the overall thin film is established during growth and subsequent temperature treatment. Alternatively, or in addition to the doped basecoat, a modified electrolyte may also be used which contains the desired dopants in an appropriate dosage.
The embodiments of the invention have been described based on platinum thin films, but the present invention is not limited thereto. Alternatively, the thin films can also be made of rhodium, iridium or other precious metals, with the respective process parameters (electrolyte, temperature, etc.) being adapted accordingly.
Further, the embodiment based on an Al 2 O 3 ceramic substrate has been described, but the present invention is not limited thereto. Alternatively, other ceramic substrates such as a barium titanate ceramic substrate or even a glass substrate or a passive steel substrate may be used.
