Description

Since the knee airbags are mounted below an instrument panel and thus are located relatively far away from the extremities to be protected, they require a relatively large volume. After triggering the inflator and the opening of an airbag cover, the collapsed airbag is ejected at high speed. During the subsequent first deployment phase, the airbag internal pressure drops rapidly as more airbag volume is provided than the inflator can relieve. This low internal pressure leads to a mechanical instability of the airbag when positioning in the first deployment phase.
The 197 07 997 A1 relates to an airbag device having a central pad portion and two lateral pad parts, which are interconnected via partitions. In the partitions overflow openings are formed, flows through the deployment gas from the side chambers, which are first filled in the middle chamber. The airbag device is designed as a front passenger airbag.

The object of the present invention is therefore to provide an airbag device which takes into account the above-mentioned problems and achieves rapid and stable airbag deployment despite unfavorable gas generator positioning.
According to the invention this object is achieved by an airbag device with the features of the main claim. Advantageous embodiments and further developments of the invention are listed in the subclaims.
The airbag device according to the invention with an airbag for deployment in front of a knee region of a vehicle occupant with two opposing airbag layers and at least one tether that holds the airbag layers in the inflated state of the airbag at a fixed distance from each other and forms a separation of two airbag chambers, provides that the tether forms an obstruction gas flow passage during the deployment phase and has or forms at least one passage opening which provides increased gas passage with increasing airbag chamber pressure and is characterized in that pressure-independent passage openings are formed between the airbag chambers and the total area of the pressure-independent passage openings is the total area of the pressure-dependent Passage openings does not exceed. The airbag device according to the invention provides a conventional airbag, in particular a knee airbag, which is formed from two airbag layers, for example fabric layers or film layers, which are connected to one another at their circumference, in particular sewn. As a result, an airbag is formed. In this airbag, a gas generator may be introduced, alternatively, the airbag is in fluid communication with a gas generator and is filled via supply lines with the deployment gas. Between the airbag layers at least one tether is arranged, which defines the depth of the airbag by the tether is connected to the two airbag layers such that in the connecting region of the airbag layers with the tether a buckling of the airbag is not possible. By the tethers there is a separation between two airbag chambers, said separation is not gas-tight, otherwise there can be no overflow of deployment gas from one airbag chamber into another airbag chamber. In the airbag vents may be provided to allow a controlled yielding in an impact of the tibial or knee region. The tether forms a flow obstruction to deployment gas during the deployment phase so that first the airbag chamber closest to the inflator is filled before the next airbag chamber is filled. The aim is to fill the first airbag chamber almost completely first, before the second, subsequent chamber is filled. For this purpose, the tether has a passage opening or forms the passage opening together with the airbag layer or the airbag layers, wherein the passage opening is formed so that an increased gas passage is provided with increasing airbag chamber pressure. It thus takes place a pressure-controlled filling of the individual airbag chambers. The larger the airbag internal pressure in a chamber, the larger the cross section of the passage opening and thus also the free flow cross section, so that a larger amount of gas can flow from the airbag chamber with the high internal pressure to the airbag chamber with the lower internal pressure. This ensures that initially the gas generator closest chamber is completely or almost completely filled with the deployment gas, whereby an early positioning of the airbag initially takes place in the gas generator near area, resulting in an increased mechanical stability of the airbag in the deployment phase.
A development of the invention provides that at least one passage opening is formed as a slot in the tether. The tethers not only serve to regulate the airbag depth, but also absorb significant mechanical forces without failing. The tethers can be formed continuously closed except for the slots or through holes and divide the airbag into individual airbag chambers. To provide the possibility of transfer from one airbag chamber to the other, at least one passage opening is formed as a slot in the tether, the cross section of which is very small during the initial filling phase. With increasing pressure in the airbag chamber, the cross section of the passage opening and thus also the free flow cross section to the next airbag chamber increases. The filling is thus pressure-dependent, the respective remote chamber has a lower pressure than the chamber closer to the gas generator, so that the closer to the gas generator chamber can be mechanically stable positioned and the gas generator further lying airbag chamber on the already fully unfolded airbag chamber can support.
A development of the invention provides that a passage opening is formed as a narrow clearance between at least one airbag layer and the tether, wherein the passage opening or the free space increases with an increasing airbag pressure, so that the flow resistance decreases with increasing pressure. Several tethers can be arranged in the deployment direction one behind the other to arrange a plurality of airbag chambers in a row and to fill one after the other. The invention allows the individual chambers to be time-staggered and sequentially filled.
A development of the invention provides that an inlet opening for the deployment gas opens into the airbag in the first airbag chamber and the other airbag chambers connect in one direction to the first airbag chamber, so that starting from the first airbag chamber, which is closest to the gas generator, Join a plurality of airbag chambers extending in the direction of the vehicle longitudinal direction.
The airbag chambers, which are separated by the tethers may have a mutually different volume, so that an adapted support is provided. In those areas in which little or no contact with body parts of the vehicle occupant is to be expected, the volume can be made smaller than in those areas which come into direct contact with the vehicle occupants.
A development of the invention provides that the passage openings are closed in the deflated state of the airbag via a valve flap, for example by sewing with a thread with a low tensile strength, gluing or by a valve flap, for example in the form of a sewn or glued tab formed can be.
According to the invention it is provided that pressure-independent passage openings are provided, which allow a free passage between the individual airbag chambers in order to provide a minimum of gas passage even during the first phase of deployment can. It is envisaged that the total area of the pressure-independent passage openings does not exceed the total areas of the pressure-dependent passage openings, so that the desired effect of the sequential filling and the mutually supporting airbag chambers is not canceled out in the course of deployment. The pressure-independent passage openings limit the maximum pressure in the respective airbag chambers and are formed, for example, as forcibly opened holes in the tethers.
It is also envisaged that tethers are arranged longitudinally to the deployment direction of the airbag, these tethers are equipped with pressure-dependent passage openings to provide a timed, pressure-dependent deployment in a transverse direction to the main deployment direction of the airbag can.
The pressure-dependent passage openings cause a pressure-dependent enlargement of the overflow surface and can be realized cost-effectively by the introduction of slots in the already existing tethers in the airbag. The extension of the total inflation time is small and the total volume of the airbag can be divided by the tethers into relatively independent chambers.

The inventive solution no new construction of an airbag device is necessary, but already existing tethers can be used after appropriate modification. There is a time-staggered filling of the individual airbag chambers instead, without a significant extension of the Gesamtaufblaszeit is observed. The proposed solution can also be installed in airbag devices which have an asymmetric generator fixation and an asymmetric deployment, that is, when a gas generator is located at one end of the airbag device and the airbag device has to deploy over a longer distance. The positioning of the entire airbag device becomes more robust and reproducible due to the time-staggered, substantially sequential filling of the individual airbag chambers. Positioning errors do not occur or only to a small extent.
The subdivision of the airbag chambers can be virtually any desired, in particular deviations of the tethers deviating from straight lines are also provided. The airbag chambers need not be completely hermetically separated from each other, remaining opening areas need only be sufficiently small to ensure a measurable pressure difference between the individual chambers during the inflation process. At the end of the deployment process, a substantially uniform pressure prevails throughout the airbag.
The airbag device may also have other tethers that are not designed as a flow obstacle.
The openings within the tethers may be formed in any shape, in particular in any line shape with any orientation.
Provided vents or pressure-independent through holes are provided in the tethers, for example, to limit the maximum pressure in the air bag chamber, the area of the pressure-independent through holes or ventilation holes should be limited, for example not exceed 20 cm 2 , so that the desired effect of a pressure gradation during deployment not again will be annulled. The passage openings designed as slots change their opening cross section as a function of the pressure difference of the adjoining chambers, whereby the essential filling of the subsequent, so the gas generator remote chamber only begins in the presence of a significant pressure difference between the two chambers.
