The invention relates to a method for detecting the occurrence of cross-sensitivities of an exhaust gas sensor, which is provided for determining the presence or the concentration of at least one first exhaust gas component in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, to at least one second exhaust gas component of the exhaust gas, wherein the exhaust gas sensor in the flow direction of the exhaust gas after at least one at least the second exhaust gas component converting first catalytic converter is arranged.

Particle sensors have a strong cross-sensitivity to external influencing variables such as sensor temperature, exhaust gas temperature, exhaust gas speed or also exhaust gas components. These variables influence both the accumulation of the particles on the sensor and the measured impedance of the sensor.

The method makes it possible for dynamic operating point changes of the internal combustion engine that take place faster than the response of the particle sensor to be corrected with regard to the cross sensitivities of the particle sensor.
To do this, however, it is necessary to determine or estimate the influencing variables on the cross-sensitivities of the particle sensor at the location of the particle sensor. This is particularly difficult for exhaust gas components, though the content of which cannot be determined with sufficient accuracy at the installation site of the particle sensor. For example, the content of an exhaust gas component in the particle sensor can vary greatly as a function of an aging condition of a catalytic converter converting the exhaust gas component, with otherwise the same operating parameters of the internal combustion engine.
It is the object of the invention to provide a method with which the occurrence of cross-sensitivities of an exhaust gas sensor to exhaust gas components can be recognized.

Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
The object is achieved in that, during first operating states, high concentrations of the second exhaust gas component are set up in front of the first catalytic converter and / or that conditions are set on the exhaust gas sensor in which a high cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to the second exhaust gas component is expected and that during second operating states Set low concentrations of the second exhaust gas component upstream of the first catalytic converter and / or that conditions are set at the exhaust gas sensor in which a low cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to the second exhaust gas component is expected and that if the signal behavior of the exhaust gas sensor deviates between the first and the second operating states, the existence of this the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor and a cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor caused thereby is closed.
The method is based on the knowledge that with an intact catalytic converter, regardless of the concentration of the second exhaust gas component causing the cross-sensitivity, there is no significant proportion of the second exhaust gas component in the exhaust gas sensor upstream of the catalytic converter. The signal from the exhaust gas sensor cannot therefore be influenced by the second exhaust gas component. Conditions at the exhaust gas sensor which lead to a greater cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to the second exhaust gas component, for example a high or low temperature of the exhaust gas sensor, also do not impair the signal from the exhaust gas sensor, since there is insufficient quantity of the second exhaust gas component at the exhaust gas sensor.
In contrast, if the catalytic converter is defective, a higher concentration of the second exhaust gas component causing the cross-sensitivity upstream of the catalytic converter will lead to a noticeable increase in the concentration of the second exhaust gas component at the location of the exhaust gas sensor. This influences the measurement of the exhaust gas sensor, specifically as a function of the offered concentration of the second exhaust gas component upstream of the catalytic converter and of conditions at the exhaust gas sensor which influence the cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to the second exhaust gas component.
Operational or targeted variations in the concentration of the second exhaust gas component upstream of the catalytic converter and / or by varying the conditions at the location of the exhaust gas sensor, which influence the cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to the second exhaust gas component, can thus indicate a defect in the catalytic converter with regard to its conversion or retention capacity for the second exhaust gas component and thus the presence of the second exhaust gas component at the location of the exhaust gas sensor with a resulting cross-sensitivity and a corresponding incorrect measurement of the exhaust gas sensor.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the presence or concentration of the first exhaust gas component is measured after a first catalytic converter that converts or stores at least the second exhaust gas component and a second catalytic converter that converts or stores at least the first exhaust gas component, and that in different operating states A measure ε for the conversion capability or the retention capacity of the second catalytic converter for the first exhaust gas component is determined from the signal from the exhaust gas sensor, so that, assuming a defective first catalytic converter, a measure β is determined for an assumed load on the exhaust gas sensor with the second exhaust gas component for the respective operating state and that in the case of a steadily increasing or decreasing amount ε as a result of a constant change in the amount β, the presence of the second exhaust gas component at the exhaust gas sensor is inferred. The two catalytic converters can be present separately or in a structural unit, it being possible for the method to be carried out independently of the sequence of the catalytic converters arranged in the exhaust gas duct. Since the dimension ε is formed from the signal from the exhaust gas sensor, it will be incorrect if the first catalytic converter is defective. Furthermore, if the first catalytic converter is defective, the dimension ε will change if the concentration of the second exhaust gas component upstream of the first catalytic converter is varied. The measure β quantifies the possible load on the exhaust gas sensor with the second exhaust gas component, assuming a defective first catalytic converter. If the dimension ε does not change as a function of the dimension β, then there is an intact first catalytic converter and thus there is no cross-influencing of the exhaust gas sensor by the second Exhaust component to go out. If, on the other hand, the dimension ε changes as a function of the dimension β, it can be concluded that there is a defective first catalytic converter and thus that the second exhaust gas component is present on the exhaust gas sensor, thereby influencing the measurement result of the exhaust gas sensor for the first exhaust gas component. The advantage of this embodiment of the invention is that in today's exhaust systems, a measure ε for describing the conversion or retention capacity of a catalytic converter is often formed and thus existing variables can be used when carrying out the method. For many exhaust systems, the process can be carried out purely arithmetically on the basis of signals and measurement results from existing sensors.
A computational recording of the relationship between the dimensions ε and β for different operating states can be achieved by forming pairs of values of the measure ε and the measure β for different operating states, so that a functional relationship between the measure ε and the measure β is determined by means of a regression analysis and that the presence of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor and a resulting cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor is concluded when the adjusted regression parameters exceed a predetermined limit value or fall below a predetermined limit value and / or that from the level of the regression parameters on the concentration of the second exhaust gas component is closed on the exhaust gas sensor. The method makes it possible to make a statement about the cross-influence of the exhaust gas sensor even with scattering measurement results.
A simple evaluation of the dependency of the measure ε on the measure β is made possible by performing a linear regression and checking for the presence of the second exhaust gas component at the exhaust gas sensor when the determined straight line rises above or falls below a specified limit value and a cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor caused thereby is closed. For this purpose, within the scope of the scatter of the measured values, there must be a constant, linear relationship between the dimension ε and the dimension β.
Another advantage of an evaluation with the help of a regression analysis can be exploited in that the presence of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor and the resulting cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor is only inferred if, on the basis of the regression analysis, a statistically relevant relationship between the measure ε and the measure β is verified. Random scattering of the measurement results, for example within the scope of measurement tolerances, can thus be distinguished from actual dependencies of the dimensions ε and β according to reliable mathematical methods. This can be done, for example, using the known regression coefficient r.
The certainty of the decision as to whether the signal from the exhaust gas sensor is influenced by a second exhaust gas component can be improved by only inferring the presence of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor and the resulting cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor if pairs of values for the measure ε and the dimension β are present, in which the dimension β exceeds a predetermined range due to the various operating states. A large variation in the dimension β leads, in particular with a linear relationship between the dimensions ε and β, to the largest possible change in the dimension ε in the case of a defective first catalytic converter, which is easier and more reliable to detect than correspondingly small changes in the dimension ε.
The influencing of the signal from the exhaust gas sensor on an existing second exhaust gas component can be dependent on further operating conditions, in particular on the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor. It can therefore be useful or necessary that the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor and / or the exhaust gas temperature in the area of the exhaust gas sensor are taken into account as conditions which influence the cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to the second exhaust gas component. If there is such a relationship between the cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor to a second exhaust gas component and the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor, then, given the presence and concentration of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor, different measurement results of the exhaust gas sensor are obtained by varying the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor. The temperature dependency of the measurement result caused by the cross-sensitivity to the second exhaust gas component can be superimposed on a temperature dependency of the measurement result caused otherwise. The presence of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor can thus be detected, for example, with a constant concentration of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor by varying the temperature of the exhaust gas sensor.
For the targeted variation of the measure β, i.e. the potential load of the exhaust gas sensor with the second exhaust gas component, provision can be made for the concentration of the second exhaust gas component to be adjusted upstream of the first catalytic converter by varying the raw emissions of the internal combustion engine for the second exhaust gas component and / or by introducing the second exhaust component in the exhaust gas duct of the internal combustion engine upstream of the first catalytic converter and / or by introducing precursor products of the second exhaust gas component, from which the second exhaust gas component is formed, into the exhaust gas duct upstream of the first catalytic converter.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, it can be provided that when the presence of the second exhaust gas component on the exhaust gas sensor and the resulting cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor is detected, the cross-sensitivity of the exhaust gas sensor is corrected for the second exhaust gas component. This is particularly advantageous in connection with catalytic converters, the aging of which and thus the decline in their effectiveness can hardly be foreseen and can therefore hardly be taken into account, for example by a computer model or a family of characteristics.
A particularly preferred variant of the invention provides that the occurrence of cross sensitivities of a particle sensor arranged downstream of at least one oxidation catalytic converter and a particle filter is detected. Particle sensors are used for on-board diagnosis of particle filters, but in addition to their sensitivity to the particles to be detected, they have a number of cross-sensitivities, including to other exhaust gas components. The concentration of the other exhaust gas components at the location of the particle sensor is heavily dependent on the converting ability of the upstream catalytic converters, but is not measured in known exhaust systems at the location of the particle sensor. With the method described, the cross-sensitivities of the particle sensor to exhaust gas components can be compensated without additional components for determining the concentration of the exhaust gas components in the area of the particle sensor.
Known particle sensors are particularly sensitive to unburned hydrocarbons. A significant improvement in the on-board diagnosis for the functionality of the particle filter can therefore be achieved by determining the particle quantities carried in the exhaust gas by the particle sensor as the first exhaust gas component to be measured, and recognizing the cross-sensitivity of the particle sensor to the second exhaust gas component hydrocarbons. If the influence of hydrocarbons on the particle sensor is recognized, the output sensor signal can be corrected, for example.
In known particle sensors, unburned hydrocarbons lead to a reduction in sensitivity. A particle filter whose retention capacity has fallen below a predetermined limit value is therefore not recognized on the basis of the signal from the particle filter in the presence of hydrocarbons in the area of the particle filter. It can therefore be provided that the particle sensor is used for on-board diagnosis (OBD) of the particle filter and that when the second exhaust gas component hydrocarbon is detected on the particle sensor, an OBD alarm is triggered if the particle sensor signals lower than operating conditions without hydrocarbons .
A variation of the measure β, which describes the loading of the particle sensor with unburned hydrocarbons assuming a defective oxidation catalyst, can be achieved by increasing the concentration of hydrocarbons upstream of the oxidation catalyst through the raw hydrocarbon emissions of the internal combustion engine under different operating conditions and / or by introducing Hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas before the oxidation catalyst is varied. If the oxidation catalytic converter is intact, none of the measures will impair the measurement of the particle filter. Only when the oxidation catalytic converter is defective does unburned hydrocarbons reach the particle sensor in the relevant concentration and influence its measurement result.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is provided that for different operating states at least one measure ε for the retention capacity of the particle filter is modeled as a quotient from a signal from the particle sensor or a comparison value derived therefrom and from one derived from an engine model for determining the raw emissions of the internal combustion engine Signal of a particle sensor or a comparison value derived therefrom is calculated as a measure for the presence and / or concentration of hydrocarbons at the particle sensor. The measure ε corresponds to the so-called emissivity ε, as it is determined in known systems for determining the retention capacity of particle filters for on-board diagnosis. An OBD alarm is triggered when the emissivity ε exceeds a predetermined value. By correlating the measure ε and thus the emissivity ε with the measure β, it is possible to prove that the particle sensor is contaminated with hydrocarbons on the basis of an already existing parameter.
The measure β for the strength of a potential influence of the particle sensor with unburned hydrocarbons can be determined by correcting the signal of the particle sensor or a comparison value derived therefrom for the presence of hydrocarbons for different operating states, assuming a defective oxidation catalytic converter and that the measure β for the assumed hydrocarbon influence on the particle sensor with a defective oxidation catalytic converter as the quotient of the corrected Signal of the particle sensor or the comparison value derived therefrom and the measured and / or predicted signal of the particle sensor not corrected for cross-sensitivities for hydrocarbons or a comparison value derived therefrom is determined. In the given calculation basis, a high potential load of the particle sensor with hydrocarbons leads to a high degree of β. However, the reciprocal value can also be used, in which case a low level β corresponds to a high potential hydrocarbon load on the particle sensor.
To vary the measure β, the hydrocarbon concentration upstream of the oxidation catalytic converter is varied. This can take place via the hydrocarbon emissions of the internal combustion engine in different operating states. The correction of the signal from the particle sensor, assuming a defective oxidation catalytic converter, can be done by correcting the signal from the particle sensor or a comparison value derived therefrom for the presence of hydrocarbons in the various operating states on the basis of an engine model for calculating the raw engine emissions of hydrocarbons. The model provides the concentration of hydrocarbons upstream of the oxidation catalytic converter. This saves the need to measure the hydrocarbon concentration upstream of the oxidation catalytic converter. A simulation of the hydrocarbon concentration upstream of the oxidation catalytic converter on the basis of an engine model is possible, since the concentration here is not influenced by undefined aged catalytic converters.
If hydrocarbons are detected in the area of the particle sensor, it can be assumed that the oxidation catalytic converter is defective and that the measurement result of the particle sensor is influenced by hydrocarbons. To correct the cross-sensitivities of the particle sensor in the on-board diagnosis of the particle filter, it can be provided that, when hydrocarbons are detected at the location of the particle sensor, a measure ε 'for the retention capacity of the particle filter as the quotient of the presence, assuming a defective oxidation catalyst from hydrocarbons corrected signal of the particle sensor or a comparison value derived therefrom and a modeled signal of a particle sensor derived from an engine model for determining the raw emissions of the internal combustion engine or a comparison value derived therefrom is formed. The dimension ε 'then corresponds to the actual emissivity of the particle filter. It can be compared with a specified limit value for the emissivity of the particle filter and an OBD alarm can be triggered if the limit value is exceeded.
The cross-sensitivities of different exhaust gas sensors to different exhaust gas components can be taken into account that cross-sensitivities of oxygen sensors and / or nitrogen oxide sensors and / or ammonia sensors arranged after an SCR catalytic converter and / or after an NSC catalytic converter and / or after an oxidation catalytic converter and / or hydrocarbon sensors are recognized and / or corrected. SCR catalytic converters and NSC catalytic converters are used to convert nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine, while oxidation catalytic converters convert hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide contained in the exhaust gas. All catalytic converters are subject to an undefined aging process, which results in an unforeseeable load on the downstream sensors with the respective non-converted exhaust gas components. The method described makes it possible to determine the presence of the unconverted exhaust gas components in the area of the exhaust gas sensors and, if necessary, to undertake a corresponding correction of the sensor signals or the measures brought about by them.
If it is provided that cross sensitivities to the exhaust gas components nitrogen oxides and / or ammonia and / or carbon monoxide are recognized and / or corrected, then the relevant influencing variables on the cross sensitivities of known exhaust gas sensors can be corrected.
The method can be used particularly advantageously in diesel engines which have an oxidation catalytic converter, a particle filter and a particle sensor in their exhaust gas duct.
