Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及一种处理视频图象的方法和装置,具体涉及一种用来控制启动脉冲的方法,用于按照发光的占空因数调制(脉宽调制-PWM)的原理来提高显示在诸如等离子体显示板(PDP)或者其它显示设备之类的矩阵显示屏上的图象质量。
背景技术
下面将联系PDP来说明本发明,但是本发明可以应用于上述提及的其它类型的显示器。
众所周知,等离子体显示板由密封在一起以形成充满气体的空间的两块绝缘板构成。在空间的内部设置有肋条,以形成仅可以处于“ON”或者“OFF”状态的放电单元矩阵阵列。同样,与通过发光(光发射)的模拟控制来表示灰度级的CRT(阴极射线管)或者LCD(液晶显示器)之类的其它显示器不同,PDP通过调制每帧的光脉冲的数目来控制灰级。这些光脉冲被称为保持脉冲。由眼睛将时间调制积分一段对应与眼睛时间响应的周期。
为了获得较好的图像质量,对比度是极其重要的。但是,至少由于以下这些原因,对于等离子显示板(PDP),对比度数值要劣于CRT的对比度:
在PDP中,普遍在视频图象每帧中使用一定量的启动操作。这种使等离子体单元预激励的启动过程需要为均匀写入被称为“子场”的每个帧的子周期而预备等离子体单元。在已知的寻址模式中,可以区分两种类型的启动脉冲:硬启动脉冲(方波形脉冲,具有很快增长的斜率),每帧周期使用它们一次;和软启动脉冲(三角形脉冲,具有较缓增长的斜率),当前每个子场使用它们一次。实际上,在几乎每种平板类型中都使用第二类型的启动。启动过程的负面效果是产生平板的背景光。硬启动操作产生大量的背景亮度,这是降低可获得的对比度的因素。在每个子场中使用软启动操作。每次操作都产生较少的背景亮度,但是,因为每帧通常使用软启动多次,这将会增加背景并且总的结果可能会更差。如果在每帧中使用更多的子场,则会产生相同的问题,因为启动操作的数目通常与子场的数目相联系。
此外,平板效率(流明/瓦特)有限,并且对于PDP给定的功率消耗,按照图象的内容仅仅可以在屏幕上获得有限的亮度。
为了克服降低对比度的缺点,在以THOMOSON Licensing S.A.的名义申请的PCT专利申请NO.WO01/56003中提出通过利用“自启动(self-priming)”和“刷新子场”来增加PDP的对比度。自启动子场减少了或者消除了对启动的要求,因此使得暗区更暗,同时,刷新子场寻址更快。实际中,帧周期中刷新子子场的数目要高于自启动子场的数据。因此,使用这种技术可以降低总的寻址时间。
快速的寻址可以给保持脉冲留下更多的时间,因此使亮区更亮。这对于与75Hz的多媒体信号源连接的PDP监视器来说尤其正确,因为为了具有可接受数目的子场,图象能量通常局限于75Hz的信号源。在50Hz和60Hz模式下,图象功率通常受电源电子设备的限制,减少的寻址时间另外可以用于增加子场的数目并因此改进图象的质量。
实际上,在具有最大有限白色数值(例如100cd/m2,大约150个保持脉冲)的全白图象情况下,上面的PCT专利申请中描述的思想使用良好。在这种情况下,由于软启动发光低于0.1cd/m2,对比度在暗室中小于1000∶1。但是,实验表明,当保持脉冲的数目增加时,最大的子场将会遭受响应保真度问题。这是由许多原因引起的。例如:
子场与位于帧开始之处的启动脉冲相隔较远,因此对响应保真度问题更加敏感。
这种子场包含了更多的能量,这同样会使单元变得更热。由于响应保真度问题随着温度的增加而增加,这种子场在增加总体亮度的期间会产生更多的问题。
此外,当给定子场的保持脉冲的数目增加得非常多时,同时,它的惯性增加,并且会遭遇响应保真度问题。
发明内容
本发明的目的是提出一种新的启动方法,它能增加对比度并降低响应保真度问题。
本发明的也是提出一种新的启动方法,它能与PCT申请NO.WO01/56003描述的方法一起使用。
本发明涉及一种处理显示在显示板上的视频信号的方法,所述的显示板包括可以处于“ON”或者“OFF”的等离子体单元的矩阵阵列,其中视频场的持续时间被划分成在该期间单元可以被激活的N个子场,每个子场包括至少一个寻址周期和保持周期,它们的持续时间对应于与所述子场有关的加权,所述方法包括至少一个启动周期,其特征在于如下确定启动周期的位置:

根据优选实施例,在所有的子场n+1到N之前添加启动脉冲。借助上述的特征,在“峰值白色”图象的情况下,按照最大亮度使用更多的启动操作,以便在实现较好的响应保真度的同时保持最大的对比度。
也可以通过在视频场的开始之处添加启动脉冲来改进上述的方法。较为可取的是,结合诸如能够遵守Single-O-Level标准的特定编码方式的最优编码来使用这种启动操作,以便提高平板响应保真度。这种标准允仅仅允许在两个切换为ON的子场之间最多有一个切换为OFF的子场。
根据特定实施例,使用特定的测试模式来确定保持阈值,修改保持脉冲的数目,并且确定出现响应保真度问题所需的保持脉冲的数目,所述的数目给出了保持阈值D。
本发明也是一种执行上述方法的装置。所述装置包括峰值亮度增强(PLE)测量单元、子场编码单元和等离子体控制单元。所述等离子体控制单元包括至少一个用于存储每个PLE数值的各种子场代码的编码查找表、从给出了保持阈值的适当保持表中选出的内容和用于PDP控制的启动表。

具体实施方式
在图1中示出了具有12个子场SF1到SF12的子场组织结构。对子场的加权如下:

所述子场SFi(1≤i≤12)中的特定加权表示要以8比特视频模式来再现的256个视频电平的细分。然后通过这些子场的组合来再现从0到255每个视频电平,每个子场或者完全起作用,或者不起作用。因此,可以借助TV/视频技术中要求的这种子场组织结构来产生256个视频电平。图1示出了子场SF中的帧周期和它的细分,其中帧周期在60Hz时例如是16.6ms。每个子场SF是时间周期,在该周期中对一个单元连续执行下面的动作。
1.固定长度寻址周期,在其中,或者用高电压将单元变成激活状
态或者用低电压将单元变成中性状态。

气体放电。

此外,上述具体的子场组织结构中,在帧周期的开始之处使用单一软启动P。而且,子场的加权以PCT专利申请No.WO01/56003中描述的斐波纳契数列(Fibonacci sequence)为根据。这种最优化的子场编码能够使两个处于ON的子场之间存在不止一个处于OFF的子场(SOL概念)。实际上,在一些情况下,这种带有单一软启动的子场组织结构并不足以获得完美的响应保真度。
本发明的方法也使用THOMOSON Licensing S.A.的WO 00/46782中描述的功率控制方法。该方法产生或多或少的保持脉冲,作为平均图象功率的函数,即,使用不同的功率电平在不同的模式之间进行切换。实际上,子场组织结构关于子场加权因子是变化的,该因子用于改变每个子场周期中产生的小脉冲的数量。具体而言,该子场加权因子确定要为子场产生多少个保持脉冲,例如,如果该因子是*2,这意味着子场加权数要乘以2,以获得在激活子场周期中产生的保持脉冲的数目。所述的因子通过将保持脉冲的总数除以255来获得,其中255与视频电平的编码相对应。对于一幅给定的图象,保持脉冲的总数目取决于功率电平增强(PLE)的量或者平均功率电平(APL)的量。因此,对于全白图象,保持脉冲的数目将会较低,而对于峰值白色图象,因为相同的功耗,保持脉冲的数目较高。下表中给出了保持脉冲的数目对于因子函数中的每个加权的示例。所述的保持脉冲数目对应于上述的子场加权。

下面将使用参考图1以及上述的控制方法描述的相同类型的子场组织结构来说明本发明。
首先,为了确定保持阈值D,如图2所示,使用了具体的测试图样。构造具体的测试图样,以致仅仅使用两种不同的灰度级,一行上的两个连续单元接收与各自的灰度级相对应的保持脉冲,以及,两条连续的行上的相对应的单元接收与各自的灰度级相对应的保持脉冲。详细说来,两个灰度级例如是170和176。以下描述如何选择灰度级的数值。实际上,这两种灰度级170和176具有各自相对应的数字代码字111111101110和111111011110。因为这两个数值有些特殊,所以选择了该数值:实际上,除了第7子场和第8子场之外,所有的子场都相同,因此,它们能够显示出第7子场对第8子场的影响。如上所述,对于行n-1,数值170施加于第一红色单元,数值176施加于第一绿色单元,数值170施加于第一蓝色单元,数值176施加于第二红色单元,数值170施加于第二蓝色单元,等等。

为了确定最优化的图象,使用了上述的控制方法。修改子场因子,直到在屏幕边线上出现响应保真度问题。这个问题是由于在打开的单元的边缘和闭合单元的内部的不同行为造成的。为最优因子获得的保持脉冲的数目被用来确定保持阈值。例如,假设在数值170和176之间的过渡处出现第一个问题时,因子是4.4:这意味着对漏写负责的子场是保持脉冲数目等于79(18×4.4)的第7子场,然后,保持脉冲的阈值被设置为79。该数值存储在以后要在根据本发明的方法中使用的特定表中。这个数值取决于PDP的特征,例如,选择寻址速度和平板技术(气体混合,MgO层,屏蔽肋条的高度,单元尺寸等等)。

已经参考基于12个子场的模式对本发明进行了说明。但是,可以以多种模式来实现本发明,例如,基于10、11和12个子场的三种模式。在这种情况下,用户可以选择他想要的模式。对于每种模式,PLE电路将会确定一般要使用多少个保持脉冲。但是,对于整体地具有相同的保持脉冲数目,每个子场的保持脉冲的数目将会变化,并且启动脉冲的数目和位置也会变化。
因此,本发明提供了一种可以应用于最大白色亮度的动态启动***,用于使所有的图象内容都获得良好的对比度,而与功率电平模式无关。
在图4中示出了本发明的电路实现。在第一单元10中,以8比特标准二进制代码编码的输入视频数据R,G,B施加于先有技术中已知的消除灰度系数函数。然后,视频数据RGB施加到PLE测量电路11,其中,分析和计算RGB数据,以得到发送到等离子体控制单元12的PLE数值。8比特视频数据同样被发送到子场编码电路13,该电路13接收来自等离子体控制单元12中的LUT表121的适当代码。这里,对于每个标准化的象素值,分配子场代码字。将RGB子场数据SFR,SFG,SFB从子场编码电路13发送到串并转换电路14,然后送到PDP15的列驱动器(顶部数据,底部数据)。
如图4所示,等离子体控制电路12包括PLE分析电路120,它接收来自PLE测量电路11的PLE信号。该电路120提供***的滤波和磁滞控制。
然后,将来自电路120的PLE数值发送到LUT表121,所述的LUT表121存储了各种数据,以实现适当代码选择、适当保持表和启动表的选择,以及上述每个PLE数值的各种子场代码。
按照实际的PLE数值,将8比特的视频数据转换成子场代码字的具体子场编码表被载入到单元13中,以进行子场编码。串并转换单元14将把各种子场单独地载入存储器16(例如,1比特的12个不同的表)。然后在帧的时间过程中,将多个子场数据(1比特)一行一行地发送到数据驱动器。在发送子场n之前,读取121中的相应启动表,以便确定在子场n前面是否需要启动操作。在写操作之后,读取相应的保持表,以便将需要的保持脉冲的数目发送到保持发生器。
可以对上面描述的实施例作不偏离权利要求范围的修改。具体地,可以使用其它的测试图样灰度级数值或者其它类型的编码方式。
Claims (6)
1.一种处理显示在显示板上的视频信号的方法,所述的显示板包括可以处于“ON”或者“OFF”的等离子体单元的矩阵阵列,其中视频场的持续时间被划分成在该期间单元可以被激活的N个子场,每个子场包括至少一个寻址周期和保持周期,它们的持续时间对应于与所述子场有关的加权,所述方法包括至少一个启动周期,其特征在于如下确定启动周期的位置:
对于给定的寻址速度和给定的平板技术,确定保持阈值D,
计算每个子场n中保持脉冲的数目,n例如是1≤n≤N,
如果保持脉冲大于或者等于D,在至少子场n+1之前加入启动脉冲。
2.根据权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于在所有的子场n+1到N之前加入启动脉冲。
3.根据权利要求1或者2所述的方法,其特征在于在每个帧开始的位置添加启动脉冲。
4.根据权利要求3所述的方法,其特征在于使用子场来编码视频数值,以致在两个切换为ON的子场之间有不止一个切换为OFF的子场。
5.根据权利要求1到4所述的方法,其特征在于使用特定的测试模式来确定保持阈值,修改保持脉冲的数目并且确定出现响应保真度问题所需的保持脉冲的数目,所述的数目给出了保持阈值D。
6.一种执行根据权利要求1到5的方法的装置,其特征在于包括:
峰值亮度增强(PLE)测量单元、子场编码单元和等离子体控制单元,所述等离子体控制单元包括至少一个用于存储给出保持阈值的每个PLE数值的各种子场代码的编码查找表,适当保持表的选择和用于PDP控制的启动表。
