Abstract

Description
本发明涉及一种显示器件的驱动方法,该显示器件包括有两块支承板间的铁电液晶以及一个被排成若干行和列的象素***,每个象素由所述支承板的面对表面上形成的图象电极组成,而一个由所述行和列电极组成的***、至少一行象素是在某一行选择周期间经由某一行电极而选定,数据信号是经由所述列电极送给的,同时由各象素组成的行在选择之前是通过一个辅助信号来引导到某一极限状态的。
在本文中,一种极限状态应被理解为所述象素是显著透射或不透射的状态。这种状态是由所述铁电显示器件的特性所决定的,这将在下文作较详细地描述,该辅助信号幅值的选定又取决于该液晶转换到该极限状态的速率。
上面所提及的方法是用于(例如)显示屏幕或各种电视用途的显示器件中的。特别对各种电视用途和各种非易失性存储显示器件来说,铁电液晶材料的使用似乎很有吸引力,这是因为可以此实现比用基于向列相液晶材料的效果要快得多的转换时间。
其它优点在于视角的依赖关系较少(因为通常采用较小的厚度,并因为在平行于各壁的各面中的分子取向性)和对比度较高。
在第0,197,242号欧洲专利中描述了本文开头段落中所提及的那种方法。在这方法中,在与某一选择信号同步送出的数
据信号之前是必然使该液晶回到某一初始状态的若干所谓消隐脉冲。为防止铁电材料衰变,所用脉冲要周期地倒相。
上述方法是用于一种具有所谓无源阵列的显示器件;所述信号(选择信号、数据信号、消隐脉冲)都是直接送到所述行和列电极的。象素的状态则由该行和数据电压所确定。由于数据电压是送到所述列电极的,而且当某些象素未被选择时,可能会产生混有串音的各种电压,从而失去或不能得到所需要的透射状态(在第0,197,242号欧洲专利举例中的透射或不透射的状态)。
上面引用的专利申请书建议通过提供带有某一阈值的铁电效应而解决这个问题。在应用较大量的行数而不致发生对比度损失的实践中是不可能或很难实现这样一些阈值的。并且所述专利申请书只涉及在状态“0”和“1”之间的转换;在其所示器件的描述中未涉及可引导各种灰度级的可能性。
本发明的一个目的是要提供一种本文开头段落中所描述的、可用来尽量避免上述各种问题并用以实现各种灰度级的方法。
为此,本发明的方法特征在于当在至少一部分的行选择周期中,所述象素经由若干有源转换元件被连接到所述列电极,以便将若干数据信号送到诸象素,特征并在于所述辅助信号是经由同样的转换元件而送到各象素的,该辅助信号的送给时刻是在行选择开始之前的至少一个等于该铁电媒质的转换周期的某一时段内,而且该信号具有可使其达到极限透射状态的幅值和持续时间,而在所述行选择周期以后,各象素就呈现一种基本上只由所送给的数据信号所确定的透射状态。
在这方面,词语:“基本上只由所送给的数据信号所确定的”
可理解为在所述选择期间、跨接在该象素和与之相关联的电容量上的电压保持不变;并且如果在属于例如EP0,176,763中所描述的那种非选择周期中未采取一些措施使该象素上产生一个给定电压,则该电压将因各种漏泄电流而可能稍有变化。
本发明所依据的认识是通过使所述象素在电荷的影响下采取一种松弛状态而可得到显明的灰度级,该电荷是在选择这些象素或与之相关的电容量期间形成的,同时因该电荷而产生的极化作用可以说是由液晶材料中的相反极性的电荷所抵消。这是断定要发生的,因为与铁电液晶分子相关的偶极子在所述电荷的影响下被倒相,于是就实现所述抵消。被倒相的偶极子的划分不需要均匀:但是同一电压(具有和保持相同选择周期)的被倒相偶极子的百分数总是应基本相等。
因此,根据为显示各种灰度级的本发明方法特征在于该灰度级是由该行象素被选为数据显示的周期期间所送给的数据信号的幅值和持续时间所确定的。在选择周期相等的情况下,则数据信号电压确定了所述灰度级。
显然,就抵消作用而言,如EP0,176,763中所描述的那个跨接在各象素上的某一给定电压是不会导致最终稳定态(灰度值)、也不会导致使用一种无源驱动的;在无源驱动过程中,各电压都是在实际选择周期之外经由数据电极而直接送到该象素的。
本发明方法的一个附加优点是所述铁电液晶材料并不需要拥有某一阈值。
最好把基本上不透射(不透明)状态选为所述极限透射状态。从感觉的观点出发,这是可取的,因为只在最大亮度时才受到轻微
影响;而若把透明状态选为极限透射态,则就会发生更易于看到的对比度损失。
所述辅助信号可根据所用的转换元件和驱动方式而用不同的方式来实现;在用FET开关,双极性晶体管或另一种三极式转换元件情况下,则将一般在把该相关的由各象素组成的行充分写入之前的一部分行选择周期中、把该辅助信号送到所述列电极;同时在该行选择周期的第二部分中把该实际数据送到另外一个由各象素组成的行。
现将参考附图对本发明进行更详细地描述,附图中:

图1示出使用铁电液晶2的显示器件横截面示意图,该铁电液晶例如象《应用物理通讯(Appl.phys.Lett.)》第36(1980年)期上899页由clark和Lagerwall所写文章中或在EP0,032,362号专利申请中所描述的那种液晶。液晶2存在于两块平而透明的、例如玻璃或云母支承板之间。在其中之一
的支承板上有图象电极4组成的阵列,而各图象电极4是经由例如行电极和各转换元件而驱动的,同时数据信号是经由所述列电极而供给的。在另一支承板上有一副电极5-它与第一阵列的图象电极4一起组成诸象素。该副电极可接到某一固定或可变电压。视所用驱动方式(例如用MIMs-金属-绝缘体-金属结构-或二极管环结构)而定,在一块支板上可装有所述行电极,而在另一块支板上可装有所述列电极。该液晶层2的厚度近于2μm。
需要的话,可以给电极4、5涂敷上取向层或保护层6,同时为了获得一种厚度均匀的液晶层,该器件可进一步配备衬垫7。在该相关例子中,该显示器件还包括有一种例如带有分别用于红、绿、兰色的滤色镜以及偏振片9和检偏振片10的滤色层8。此外,该器件还包括有光源11,该光源由一个灯泡12和一漫射片13组成,而阵列4及其相关联的元件都是经由驱动电子设备14驱动的。
图2a概略地示出这种显示器件的单个象素是如何由一有源转换元件驱动的,在本实施例中该有源转换元件是一种薄膜场效应晶体管15。该场效应管栅极接有选择线16,而数据信号是送到被连接到液晶显示基元的数据线17上的;在本实施例中,该液晶显示基元就是概略示出的电容18,该电容的另一接头(实质上)是接地的。
图2b概略地示出当将某一已知电压跨接到由电容18所代表的象素基元上时的状态。在此实施例中,该电压是以脉冲的形式而加到数据线17上的,而基元18是经由选择线16而被选择的。
在本发明的方法中,首先提供有一种辅助信号(“消隐”)Vb1;该信号在本实施例中是负的,并在传送基本为0的信号时
使该象素转换到某一极限状态。
由于这个负电压脉冲使第一电极19(它被接到晶体管15)变负。通过使与铁电液晶材料的分子相关联的各偶极子21松弛而以这样一种方式引导这些偶极子以致使电容18的电极19、20上的电荷完全平衡或尽可能达到平衡。在该辅助电压Vb1足够负的情况下,这会导致所有的偶极子取向相同(如图2b中的状态ⅰ)。
当以略带正极性的电压V1驱动时,电极19获得少量的正电荷,致使某些偶极子21倒相。这一状况一直持续到正电荷已被抵消时为止;在液晶中可在电极19、20之间的一个区域形成被倒向的偶极子所在的畴23(图2b中的状态ⅱ)。
在稍高的电压V2下会产生更多而更大的畴23(图2b中的状态ⅲ)。在这种倒相过程中,壁的粗糙度也起到一定作用。
如果在例如图2b中的状态ⅱ情况下,让脉冲电压值V1重复出现而不采取其它措施,(这正是一般的实践情况,特别是在视频应用中)则电极19将屡次获得少量的正电荷。由于它屡次为某些偶极子21的倒相作用所平衡,所以被倒相的偶极子数增加。结果使畴23的数目和尺寸增加。
这些不再是0的透射态“畴”的存在就确定了相关象素的灰度值。因此,如果不采取附加措施,特别是对电视应用来说,这种灰度值在相等的数据信号幅值下并不是恒定的,这是因为畴23在电压脉冲频繁出现下是增长的。同样在数据信号不断变化情况下,象素灰度值取决于它们随时间的变化状况。
但是,在本发明的方法中,在实际选择之前,使用在该实际数据信号出现之前的辅助信号Vb1促使某一行象素成为某种极限状
态(例如图2b中的状态ⅰ)。这就足以及时使该行象素中的偶极子松弛到其相应的初始状态。由于就这一情况下的电荷作用而言,该辅助信号的值Vb1也取决于这一辅助信号出现的时段。由于畴23并不增长,于是此刻该透射状态,特别是象素的灰度级就唯一地由已经送出的数据信号所确定了。
参考图3进一步示出,在选择期间对于单个象素来说其中被送到这些数据线的诸信号V2、V1、Vsat都各被前置一辅助信号Vb1,以便使相关的电平值确实都独由这些信号来确定。
图4示出,当用某一具有电压值为Vp和脉宽为16至64微秒范围的脉冲驱动某一象素,同时预先送出某一具有电压值为Vb1和脉宽为同样范围的辅助信号(消隐信号)时,是如何使用本方法来得到某一给定的灰度值的。
此时该辅助信号定位在离该驱动信号的前面如此之远处以便能够达到所述极限透射状态。图4a概略地示出驱动信号相对于时间的电压变化值;而在图4b中,方块22概略地表示用于某些电压的相关象素的透射情况。在此相关的例子中,其中Vb1被选为-6V,对于-6V<Vp<OV范围则不透射,对于Vp=2V则有少量透射,对于Vp=4V则几乎完全透射,而对于Vp=6V就完全透射。方块22的实际尺寸为10μm×10μm,因此畴23不能单独地看到,但都被看作一种中间透射状态(灰度值,彩色电平)。
借助于有源驱动和使用一种使若干象素变到一种极限透射状态(“消隐”)的辅助信号,就有可能按照本发明在以铁电液晶材料为基础的大型显示器件中实现各种灰度级,这是因为诸实际铁电单
元(cells)在黑色和零级双折射白色之间转换。在本实施例中使用了由铁电材料ZLI3234(Merck)制成的,厚度为2μm的单元。
正如已经指出那样,该辅助信号的发送必须持续某一段时间td。这个周期td本身是辅助信号值的一个函数,(如图5中所示)。在图5中由“+”表示的区域中,该器件如上述那样工作;在由“-”表示的区域中,灰度值是变化的,这是因为在该辅助信号出现期间,不是所有的偶极子能受到支配的。图5示出了td和|Vb1|之间的关系,曲线a对应一种快速转换的铁电液晶材料和曲线b对应一种稍为慢速转换的材料。
在各所示实施例中,处于极限状态的象素基本上是不透明的。所以要这样选定的原因是因为从观看者的观点出发,这是更觉舒适的,同时其输出光的损耗小。在惯常采用的各种电视***中,其行选择周期近于64/μsec。并且其行数近于600。大多数铁电显示基元按少于500μsec而转换,因此,大多数有八行暂时不透射。于是最大亮度损失就小于1.25%,而且对较快速的铁电材料甚至更小。
图6概略地示出一种采用本发明的方法的器件。该器件包括有一个由位于选择薄膜晶体管15的选择线16与辅助信号和数据信号所送往的数据线17相交区域处由铁电液晶象素25所组成的阵列24。在该器件中,该辅助信号可以是经由一个电压源26(它供给电压Vb1)而获得的。当在部分行选择周期期间,例如,在这个周期的一半期间,电压Vb1经由多路复用器27而送出,并且当另半个周期期间,数据信号从一移位寄存器28被送到数据线
17。由各象素所组成的行的选择同数据线17上的电压变化基本上同时发生,这是因为经由多路复用器29,不是第一选线电路30选择该辅助信号所要送往的那根线,就是第二选线电路31选择要写入的象素的那根线。这些选线电路可以是若干移位寄存器,它们在每个选线周期之后选择某一后继线,例如,当要实现写入线的选择时,则在该辅助信号已送到该线之后就是6个选线周期。
于是在其中各行被相继写入的相关实施例中,领先的是不带信息的由5行组成的带32,可以说行33此时刚被写入,而行34仍包括有来自前面一帧的信息(图7)。该器件是由已被概略示出的驱动电路38驱动的。必要时,电路38也可供给该辅助信号(用虚线35表示)。
在一种其中使用隔行扫描的相似器件中,例如,由偶数场中8行组成的带32e领先于该偶数场刚写入的行33e。行34e包括来自前一偶数场的信息,而行40的信息是由前一奇数场所确定的(图8)。
当然,本发明并不局限于所示各实施例,但在本发明范围内是有可能作出若干变化的。
例如,正如已经指出的,所述行电极和列电极可形成在不同基片上。可以使用不同的转换元件,例如,MIMs和二极管环结构;必要时,副电极也可为象素的阵列状。可以另外以反射驱动方式来代替所述透射方式。
Claims (8)
1、显示器件的驱动方法,该种显示器件包括在两块支板间的铁电液晶和一个被排成若干行和列的象素***,每个象素由设置在所述两块支板的相对表面上的图象电极所组成,以及一个由行电极和列电极组成的***,在某一行选择周期内至少一行象素是经由某一行电极而被选定的;数据信号是经由列电极送给的,并且该行象素在被选定之前就借助一个辅助信号而使之转换到一种极限透射状态,该方法的特征在于:在至少一部分所述行选择周期期间,所述象素均经由有源转换元件连接到所述列电极,以便将数据信号送到所述象素;
所述辅助信号是经由同样的转换元件而送到各象素的,该辅助信号出现在至少经过等于一个所述铁电媒质的转换周期的行选择开始之前的一瞬间,而且该辅助信号具有使之达到所述极限透射状态的幅值和持续时间;
在所述行选择周期之后,所述诸象素呈现一种实际上只由该出现的数据信号所确定的透射状态。
2、如权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于:所述显示器件的透射状态是由在所述行的各象素被选择作为数据显示的周期期间所送到的数据信号的幅值和持续时间来确定的。
3、如权利要求2所述的方法,其特征在于:所述行的各象素在半个行选择周期期间被选为显示数据,并且该数据信号的电压电平确定了所述透射状态。
4、如权利要求1-3之一所述的方法,其特征在于:处于所述极限透射状态中的各象素实际上都是不透明的。
5、如权利要求1-3之一所述的方法,其特征在于:在所述行选择周期的一部分时段内,各象素是经由某第一行电极上的选择电压而选择的,同时所述数据信号被送到所述列电极;在所述行选择周期的另一部分时段内,各象素是经由某第二行电极而选择的,与此同时所述辅助信号被送到所述列电极。
6、一种显示器件,它包括在两块支板间的一种铁-电-光显示媒质;被排成若干行和列的一个象素***,其中各象素是由装备在该两块支板上互相面对表面上的若干图象电极所组成;以及一个用于驱动各象素的由若干行电极和列电极所组成的***;其特征在于:所述列电极被连接到诸多路复用电路的诸输出端,该多路复用电路用于转换所要显示的数据信号和为使所述液晶基元处于某一极限状态的一种辅助信号之间的列电极;该器件还包括有一个驱动和同步电路,该电路在所要显示的某一行象素上带有选择电压的同时使数据信号经由该多路复用电路而在所述列电极上出现;并且该驱动和同步电路在供有较后阶段数据信号的某一不同象素行上带有选择电压的同时,使某一辅助信号出现在所述列电极上,该辅助信号具有足以使某一象素转换到极限状态的持续时间和幅值。
7、如权利要求6所述的显示器件,其特征在于:所述另一行象素至少在一个行选择周期以后而最多在两个行选择周期以后供有数据信号。
8、如权利要求6或7所述的显示器件,其特征在于:所述多路复用电路在半个行选择周期时段内向列电极供以数据电压,而在另半个行选择周期期间供以所述辅助信号。
