北电网络公司提出了被称为“MAC-in-MAC”的方法,来尝试解决现有技术中固有的缺陷。然而北电的提议是基于平面VLAN域(即,没有VLAN标签层叠),并且具有一些缺点。首先,MAC-in-MAC方法不区分广播域和服务实例域;因此,如果服务实例的数目远远大于要求的广播域的数目,则网络节点(即,交换机、网桥、路由器等)将会负担支持像服务实例一样多的广播域的任务。由于支持广播域比支持服务实例需要更多硬件/软件密集型资源,因此带宽被消耗并且网络成本增大。另外,MAC-in-MAC方法缺乏与802.1ad网桥的互操作性;缺少能够支持数百万个广播域的可行实施方案;还要求网络内的所有网桥(而不只是边缘网桥)具有MAC-in-MAC能力。
作为进一步的背景,美国专利No.6,789,121公开了通过共享的网络基础设施提供虚拟专用网(VPN)服务的方法。所述网络基础设施包含具有CE接口的互连的PE设备。一些CE接口被分配给支持多个VLAN的VPN,并且被设置为与相应CE设备交换流量数据单元,每个流量数据单元包含一个VLAN标识符。共享的网络基础设施中的虚拟连接(VirtualConnection,VC)是根据已知的VPN标识符和由PE设备得知或发现的VLAN标识符直接得出的。美国专利No.6,484,209教导了一种被配置为基于第一相关数据集转发多播数据的***,其中第一相关数据集将多播组标识符映射到作为相应多播组的成员的端口。交换机核心包括将多播组标识符映射到包含成员端口的I/O卡的第二相关数据集。
因此,所需要的是既能适应MAN/WAN以太网的广播域和服务实例数目的不断扩充又能同时克服过去方法的缺点的替代方法和装置。

具体实施方式
描述了一种扩展VLAN(extended VLAN,E-VLAN)机制,所述机制能在广播域和服务实例域之间加以区分,并扩充以太网MAN/WAN应用中的广播域和服务实例域的数目。为了全面地理解本发明,在以下的描述中提出了诸如设备类型、协议、配置等之类的具体细节。然而,网络技术领域内的普通技术人员应理解实践本发明可能不需要这些具体细节。
计算机网络是用于在诸如中间节点和末端节点之类的节点之间传输数据的互联子网的地理上分布的集合(collection)。局域网(LAN)是这样的子网的示例;多个LAN还可通过诸如路由器、网桥或交换机之类的中间网络节点互连,从而扩展计算机网络的有效“大小”并增加通信节点的数目。末端节点的示例可包含服务器和个人计算机。这些节点一般通过根据预定协议交换离散的数据帧或分组进行通信。在此申请的上下文中,协议由一组定义节点彼此之间如何进行交互的规则组成。

在典型的网络应用中,从诸如附接到***总线的I/O子***的以太网媒体访问控制(MAC)控制器之类的成帧器(framer)接收分组。MAC控制器中的DMA引擎在***存储器中设有其可访问的缓冲器地址列表(例如,以***存储器中的描述符环(ring)的形式)。由于在MAC控制器处接收到每一分组,所以DMA引擎获得***总线的所有权(“控制”),从而访问下一描述符环以获得***存储器中的下一缓冲器地址,它可以例如将包含在分组中的数据存储(“写入”)在所述缓冲器地址处。DMA引擎可能需要经由***总线发布许多写操作从而传送所有的分组数据。
图3示出根据本发明的一个实施例的E-VLAN标签格式。与E-VLAN相关联的以太类型(Ethertype)可用来识别以太网帧中的这种扩展标签。E-VLAN标签格式的关键特征是20比特的VLAN ID/服务ID字段,该字段在某些应用中允许多达一百万个不同服务实例的识别。标签中还包括4比特的服务类别(CoS)字段、适合丢弃(D)比特、FCS(F)比特、客户MAC地址封装(M)比特,以及指示数据分组格式中使用VLAN层叠的层叠(S)比特。M比特的设置指示包括客户的MAC地址在内的整个客户帧被封装在以太网帧中。在设置了M比特的情况下,供应商MAC地址被用于通过SP网络来进行隧道定向。后两个特征将在下面更详细地讨论。
正如不久将显而易见的那样,E-VLAN标签机制可用在许多不同应用中。例如,当E-VLAN标签被用作服务实例标识符时,E-VLAN标签可以嵌入在IEEE 802.1ad帧内,代替通常与802.1ad帧相关联的内部标签。在这种应用中,可以有4,094个广播域,每个广播域支持多达一百万个服务实例。在给定的服务实例要求其自己的广播域的应用中(即,一对一通信),单个E-VLAN标签可以同时用作广播域标识符和服务实例标识符。在这种应用中,E-VLAN标签是以太网帧中的唯一标签。
在其他情况中,可以使用两个E-VLAN标签(即,一个作为广播域标识符,另一个作为服务实例域标识符)。在这种应用中,E-VLAN标签被嵌套(nest),以便使外部标签(outertag)代表广播域,内部标签(innertag)代表服务实例。这些类型的应用的示例包括存在上万个广播域并且每个广播域有多达一百万个服务实例的情况。注意,在E-VLAN标签被嵌套的应用中,可以使用单个以太类型,并且S比特将被设置为指示标签层叠。
对于要求保留FCS的应用,本发明的扩展E-VLAN标签还可用来指示以太网帧是否包含终端用户的FCS;同样,对于要求MAC隧道定向的应用,可用来识别以太网帧何时包含终端用户的MAC地址。
图4图示根据本发明的一个实施例的扩展的VLAN机制被用作跨以太网服务供应商网络的服务实例标识符的情形。图4的服务供应商网络包括以太网核心网20,所述核心网20被示为分别经网络供应商边缘(n-PE)设备32和33连接到一对以太网接入网21和22。面向用户的供应商边缘(u-PE)设备31和34将相应的客户边缘(CE)设备41和42连接到以太网接入网21和22。数据分组格式图是在每个相应的网络连接在CE设备41和42之间延伸的情况下示出的。

穿过图4的右侧(从核心网20到CE设备42)的流量遵循相反的过程。即,n-PE设备33从接收到的数据分组中剥离VLAN(广播)和E-VLAN(服务)标签;将20比特的E-VLAN服务实例标识符映射到指定针对接入网22的广播域和服务实例域的12比特VLAN。类似地,u-PE设备34在向CE设备42转发前从Q-in-Q数据分组中剥离VLAN(广播和服务)。
应意识到图4的实施例中示出的每个u-PE和n-PE设备都被配置为既对沿着从CE设备到核心网20的方向前进的帧进行附加(添加适当的标签),又对沿着从核心网20到CE设备的方向前进的帧进行剥离(去除适当的标签)。换言之,核心网和接入网边缘的交换机能够以上述方式同时处理输入和输出数据。作为示例,对帧进行添加/丢弃标签字段的处理可由在与相应的供应商边缘设备相关联的中央处理单元(CPU)上运行的软件例程来执行。

图5的实施例与图4示出的实施例相似,但核心中没有MAC隧道定向。与以太网核心网不同,图5示出在多协议标记交换(Multi-protocollabel switching,MPLS)/因特网协议(Internet Protocol,IP)核心网50上可以怎样使用本发明的E-VLAN标签。因为核心是MPLS/IP,所以客户的MAC地址在SP核心网中不可见。在该示例中,在入口侧,n-PE设备32操作来将接入网21的12比特VLAN标签的服务实例标识符映射到标识用于跨核心网50的连接的服务实例的20比特E-VLAN标签。在出口侧,n-PE设备33将20比特E-VLAN标签向回映射到标识接入网22的广播域和服务域二者的12比特VLAN。如图所示,核心数据分组还包括用于跨核心网50的IP封装的MPLS上的以太网(Ethernet over MPLS,EoMPLS)头部。

Claims (12)

从所述服务供应商的接入网接收客户帧,所述客户帧具有第一预定比特长度的第一虚拟局域网VLAN标签,所述第一VLAN标签包括用于跨所述接入网的连接的广播和服务实例标识符;
将所述第一VLAN标签的服务实例标识符映射到具有大于所述第一预定比特长度的第二预定比特长度的第二VLAN标签中;
将所述客户帧封装在供应商地址头部内;
在所述第二VLAN标签上层叠第三VLAN标签,所述第三VLAN标签指定所述核心网的广播域。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述核心网包括以太网核心网。
3.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述核心网包括多协议标记交换MPLS/因特网协议IP网。
4.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述第一预定比特长度为12比特,所述第二预定比特长度为20比特。
5.一种用于与服务供应商相关联的核心网的面向网络的供应商边缘设备的操作方法,所述方法包括:
从所述服务供应商的接入网接收客户帧,所述客户帧具有客户媒体访问控制MAC头部、客户虚拟局域网VLAN标签和第一预定比特长度的第一虚拟局域网VLAN标签,所述第一VLAN标签包括广播标识符和服务实例标识符;
将所述第一VLAN标签的服务实例标识符映射到具有大于所述第一预定比特长度的第二预定比特长度的第二VLAN标签中,所述第二VLAN标签指定经过所述核心网的服务实例域和广播域;以及
将所述客户帧封装在供应商地址头部内。
6.如权利要求5所述的方法,其中所述核心网包括以太网核心网。
7.如权利要求5所述的方法,其中所述接入网包括以太网接入网。
8.如权利要求5所述的方法,其中所述第一预定比特长度为12比特,所述第二预定比特长度为20比特。
9.一种面向网络的供应商边缘设备,包括:
从与服务供应商相关联的接入网接收客户帧的端口,所述客户帧具有第一预定比特长度的第一虚拟局域网VLAN标签,所述第一VLAN标签包括服务实例标识符;以及
处理单元,所述处理单元将所述第一VLAN标签的服务实例标识符映射到具有大于所述第一预定比特长度的第二预定比特长度的第二VLAN标签中,所述处理单元还用来将所述客户帧封装在供应商地址头部内,并且还在所述第二VLAN标签上层叠第三VLAN标签,所述第三VLAN标签指定用于跨所述服务供应商的核心网的连接的广播域。
10.如权利要求9所述的面向网络的供应商边缘设备,其中所述第一预定比特长度为12比特,所述第二预定比特长度为20比特。
11.一种面向网络的供应商边缘设备,包括:
从接入网接收客户帧的端口,所述客户帧具有客户媒体访问控制MAC头部、客户虚拟局域网VLAN标签和第一预定比特长度的第一VLAN标签,所述第一VLAN标签包括用于跨所述接入网的连接的服务实例标识符和广播标识符;以及
处理单元,所述处理单元将所述第一VLAN标签的服务实例标识符和广播标识符映射到具有大于所述第一预定比特长度的第二预定比特长度的第二VLAN标签中,所述第二VLAN标签指定经过服务供应商核心网的服务实例域和广播域,所述处理单元还用来将所述客户帧封装在供应商地址头部内。
12.如权利要求11所述的面向网络的供应商边缘设备,其中所述第一预定比特长度为12比特,所述第二预定比特长度为20比特。
