The present invention relates to the field of winter sports. More particularly, it relates to a ski edge sharpener or any other means of gliding on snow, such as boards better known as snowboarding.
In the present document, for reasons of simplification, the word ski will be used, broadly, to designate any snow sliding means equipped with edges.
The edge is a metal strip skirting the skis, whose edge allows the skier to properly control his gear, especially on hard snow. To properly perform its function, it must be as sharp as possible.
[0004] Demanding skiers accurately modulate the angle of cut [alpha] of the edge (shown in Fig. 2a) because it influences the behavior of the ski. Depending on the practice style, the value of the angle is typically between 84 and 90 [deg.].
EP 1 304 145 discloses an apparatus for sharpening the edges by perfectly controlling their angle.
To be really efficient, the edges must still undergo an ultimate polishing step. Thus, they carve the snow, but without any asperities, even tiny, do not brake the ski and reduce the speed of the skier.
This polishing operation is currently performed using a file whose surface is covered with diamond abrasive. However, quickly, the wear generated by the friction of the metal on the file creates a furrow and, if the user continues polishing on this furrow, the edge becomes convex. To avoid this problem, it is essential to move the abrasive frequently to vary the bearing area of the tool on the ski. All these movements make the operation long and tedious.
To overcome this drawback, the present invention provides a sharpener of edges, specially adapted for the last polishing operation mentioned above.
More specifically, the invention relates to a ski edge sharpening module, comprising a support which comprises, rotatably mounted on one of its faces, a sharpening disk with a ring made of abrasive material. The module is intended to be coupled to a frame of longitudinal axis A-A, having a first face forming a bearing surface, intended to be in contact with the sole of the ski.
According to the invention, the support is arranged so that the projection of the edge on the sharpening disk passes inside the abrasive ring.
The grinding module is intended to be coupled to the frame by means of a clamping system. The latter comprises a stop and the greater distance between the stop and the inner diameter of the abrasive ring is greater than the distance between the bearing surface of the frame on the sole and this stop.
The invention also relates to a ski edge sharpening apparatus comprising a tool holder and a grinding module having the above characteristics, coupled to the tool holder. The clamping system is formed of a flange disposed in the frame perpendicular to its longitudinal axis, and a screw. They are respectively on a first and a second faces of the frame. The screw cooperates with the flange and maintains it by leaning on the second face.
[0013] In a variant, the ski edge sharpening module comprises a support comprising:
a grinding disc provided with a ring of abrasive material rotatably mounted on one of its faces, and
a face forming a bearing surface, intended to be in contact with the sole of the ski.
The sharpening disc is disposed relative to the bearing surface so that the projection of the edge on the disk passes inside the abrasive ring.
Other details will appear more clearly on reading the description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing in which:
<tb> fig. 1 <sep> is a side view of the apparatus according to the invention,
<tb> fig. 2a <sep> is a sectional view along the axis l-1, FIG. 2b being an enlargement of the pivoting system of the wheel, and
<tb> figs. 3a and 3b <sep> are views from above and in section of a variant of the device.
FIG. 1 shows a tool holder comprising a frame 10 of parallelepipedal overall shape, made of a rigid material. A first face 12 of the frame 10, of longitudinal axis A-A, forms a bearing surface intended to be in contact with the sole 13 of a ski to be sharpened 14.
The tool holder is traversed, perpendicular to the axis A-A, by a clamping system. It is formed of a flange 16 which defines a stop, and a screw 18 which cooperates with the flange. They are respectively disposed on a first 20 and a second 22 opposite faces of the frame. The screw 18 acts on the flange bearing on the face 22. It is called h the height separating the bearing face 12 of the stop.
In the space defined between the flange 16 and the face 20, the clamping system maintains in place a sharpening module 21. The latter is formed of a rigid support 23 of parallelepipedal overall shape, arranged parallel to the axis AA.
The support 23 comprises, on the side intended to be close to the ski 14, a housing 24, of thickness e. It occupies the entire length of the support 23 and is extended in two circular portions 24a and 24b, arranged side by side along the axis A-A.
Each of the portions 24a and 24b is traversed at its center by a hole 26 illustrated in FIG. 2b, whose diameter varies according to its depth. Starting from the housing 24, the hole 26 has a first portion 26a in which is driven a bearing 28. The latter protrudes slightly into the housing 24 and is supported on a slight shoulder formed by a second portion 26b, of slightly smaller diameter. This second part accommodates a rubber ring 30 of O'ring type.
In a first embodiment, the second portion 26b accommodates, further and optionally, a metal washer 32. The latter is supported on a shoulder formed by a third portion 26c, of still smaller diameter.
In a second embodiment, the second portion 26b has no washer 32 and the third portion 26c is of the same diameter as the portion 26a. A second bearing 34, shown in dotted lines, is driven into the third portion 26c.
The inner diameters of the bearings 28 and 34 and the washer 32 are identical, while that of the ring 30 is slightly smaller. They form a channel 36.
Each circular portion 24a and 24b receives, concentrically to them, a sharpening disc 38. The latter comprises a circular plate 40 and an axis 42 mounted perpendicularly to the center of the plate. The free face of the plate 40 is provided at its periphery with a ring 44 of abrasive material, for example diamond.
In order to have the disks 38 in the portions 24a and 24b, the axis 42 is inserted into the channel 36, until the plate 40 abuts against the bearing 28. The diameters of the axis 42 and the channel 36 are adjusted and the length of the axis 42 protruding from the plate 40 is greater than the length of the portion of the channel 36 formed by the bearing 28 and the ring 30 and, preferably, greater than the total length of the channel 36. Thus and thanks to the elastic characteristics of the ring 30, it is tightened slightly on the axis, thus ensuring the axial retention of the disks 38 while allowing their free rotation. Moreover, their insertion and removal are very simple, without the need for a tool.
Furthermore, the cumulative thickness of the plate 40 and the ring 44 is less than that of the housing 24. As shown particularly in FIG. 2a, the greater distance s between the stop and the inside diameter of the ring is greater than the height h.
With the above dimensions, the sharpening apparatus has the following characteristics:
the contact between the grinding discs 38 and the support is limited to the surface of the bearings 28 touching the trays 40,
a free space is provided between the abrasive ring and the face 20, and
the projection of the edge on the disc 38 passes inside the ring 44.
In operation, the grinding module 21 is positioned in abutment on the flange 16, in the space defined between it and the face 20 of the frame 10, and is held in place by the clamping system. The bearing surface 12 is applied against the sole 13 of the ski 14 and the grinding discs 38 are brought into contact with the edge, parallel to it.
Then, the sharpener is moved along the edge. Its friction on the disks 38 rotates them. The combination of the translation of the tool and the rotation of the discs polishes the edge, constantly renewing the active abrasive portion, thereby avoiding the formation of a furrow.
The characteristics above are those which allow to obtain an optimal polishing, that is to say that the relative position of the ring relative to the edge gives the best result. But it may be sufficient to simply have a rotating polishing surface, without having such a precise positioning. Those skilled in the art will easily adapt the system for this purpose, using another clamping system which, for example, does not require to place the grinding module in abutment.
In a simplified version to the extreme, the sharpening apparatus is monobloc. The support 23 is independent of the frame 10 and comprises, itself, a face intended to rest on the ski and a housing receiving the grinding discs. In this way, a variant illustrated in FIG. 3may be performed in which the grinding module is applicable to the lower face of the edge (sole side). The skilled person can provide various positioning means 46 so that the projection of the edge on the disk 38 passes inside the ring 44.
Furthermore, the plate 40 and the ring 44 can be made in one piece, by means of a bell grinding wheel of abrasive material.
