Fixing device for a metal cutting insert
hard and its bearing plate on a tool holder
The present invention relates to a device for fixing a hard metal cutting insert and its bearing insert on a tool holder which is particularly simple and robust while ensuring the necessary rigidity of the assembly.
This fixing device has at least two bearing faces, forming an angle between them, carried by a tool holder and an internal thread made in this tool holder perpendicular to one of its bearing faces, a passage passing through a bearing plate comprising a cylindrical lower part and a conical upper part, the axis of this passage being distant from one side of the bearing plate by a distance greater than that separating the axis of the tapping from the other bearing face of the tool holder, a first conical head screw screwed into the internal thread and of which a part of the peripheral surface of the head comes into contact with a corresponding part of the conical part of the passage of the bearing plate, the upper face of the support insert receiving the lower face of the cutting insert which has a passage whose lower part is cylindrical,
while the upper part is conical, the axis of this passage being distant from one of its sides by a distance greater than that separating the axis of the passage from the bearing plate from one of its sides, and a second conical head Phillips screw screwed into an axial thread in the first screw and passing through the passage of the cutting insert, part of the conical surface of the head of the second screw coming into contact with a corresponding part of the conical portion the passage of the cutting insert, the whole arranged in such a way that when tightening the first and second screws, the bearing and cutting plates are applied, by a tensile force on the screw, against the first face of support of the tool holder, respectively against the upper surface of the support plate and, by a bending force of these screws,
against the second bearing face of the tool holder.
The single figure of the appended drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the fixing device according to the invention.
The illustrated fastening device comprises two or more bearing faces 1, 2 formed on a tool holder 3 and forming an angle between them, here a right angle, and a thread 4 also formed in the tool holder 3, with a perpendicular axis. to the first support surface 1.
For fixing the bearing plate 5 against the first bearing face 1, the latter comprises a passage, the lower part 6 of which is cylindrical, while the upper part 7 is conical. A conical-head screw 8, for example an Imbus screw with internal hexagon, is screwed into the tapping 4 and bears by a part of the peripheral surface of its head against a corresponding part of the conical upper portion 7 of the passage of the support plate 5.
Thanks to the fact, exaggerated in the drawing to facilitate understanding, that the axis of the passage 6, 7 is distant from the side 9 of the support plate 5 by a distance greater than that separating the axis of the tapping 4 from the second bearing face 2 of the tool holder 3, the tightening of the Imbus screw 8 causes, by a tensile force on this screw, the pressing plate 5 against the first bearing face 1 of the tool holder , and by a bending force of the screw, the plating of this bearing plate 5 against the second bearing face 2 of the tool holder.
The support plate 5 is thus made integral with the tool holder 3 in a simple and effective manner.
For fixing the cutting insert 10 against the upper surface of the support plate 5 on the one hand and against the second support face 2 of the tool holder on the other hand, the latter has a passage similar to that formed in the bearing plate having a cylindrical lower part 11 and a conical upper part 12. A conical head cruciform screw 13 is screwed into an axial thread 14 made in the screw 7 and comes into contact with part of the surface peripheral of its head with a corresponding part of the conical portion
12 of the passage of the cutting insert 10.
Thanks to the fact, exaggerated in the drawing to facilitate understanding, that the axis of the passage 11, 12 of the cutting insert is distant from one of its flanks 15 by a distance greater than that separating the axis of the tapping 4 from the bearing face 2, the tightening of the cruciform screw 13 applies the cutting insert on the one hand, by a tensile force of the screw, against the upper face of the bearing plate 5 and, on the other hand , by a bending force of the screw, against the second bearing face of the tool holder.
The same clamping principle is also valid for the maintenance of the support plate.
It is obvious that for correct operation of the device it is necessary that the diameter of the cylindrical portions 6, 11 of the passages of the bearing and cutting inserts is greater than that of the threads 4 and 14 respectively.
Apart from its simplicity and robustness, this fixing device also has the advantage of allowing the cutting insert 10 to be changed without affecting the fixing of the support insert 5.
