Safety circuit breaker, especially for road vehicles
The frequency of fires following shocks during road accidents has led to the search for the causes of these fires and the study of a solution to this problem.
This study has shown that the very great majority of fires, if not all, have as a common cause the crushing of live electric circuits, which causes short-circuits communicating the fire to flammable materials which are numerous in motor vehicles. (gasoline, gasoline vapors, oil, textile linings, wire harnesses, insulation, etc.).
It is therefore the problem of the instantaneous rupture of the current at the moment of the shock which must be solved to avoid the risk of fires.
The present invention specifically relates to a safety circuit breaker, in particular for road vehicles, which makes it possible to solve this problem of instantaneous current failure. This safety circuit breaker comprises a housing in which are arranged two terminals of an electrical circuit, a movable bridging element of these two terminals being disposed near them, control means allowing said element to be brought into the position of circuit closure.
This circuit breaker is characterized by the fact that this bridging element is held in the circuit breaking position by two opposing springs, a ratchet mechanism making it possible to maintain said element in the closed position of the circuit against 1, action of at least one of said springs, an inertia mass held in neutral position by at least two springs being intended to act on the ratchet mechanism to unlock the latter and allow said element to return to the circuit break position as soon as a shock of some magnitude occurs against the vehicle.
The accompanying drawings show, schematically and by way of example, two embodiments of the circuit breaker according to the invention.

Fig. 11 is a diagram showing the installation of the circuit breaker according to the second embodiment on a vehicle.
With reference to fig. 1 to 4, the security circuit breaker shown comprises a housing 1 formed of two shells 2 and 3, preferably of insulating plastic material. These two shells 2 and 3 are held assembled against each other by six rivets 4 engaged in openings 5 of each shell 2 and 3. In each of these shells 2 and 3 are fixed terminals 6, respectively 7 forming part an electrical circuit for supplying current to the various devices of a road vehicle, for example. These terminals 6 and 7 are preferably made of brass or another metal which is a good conductor of electricity. Each terminal 6 and 7 is connected at its internal end with respect to the body 1 to elastic metal strips 8.
A coil spring 9 has in a housing 10 arranged in the internal end of each terminal 6 and 7 tends to maintain pressure each strip 8 against a contact washer it constituting a movable bridging element of the two terminals 6 and 7. This contact washer 11, which is also preferably made of brass, is lined with an identical washer 12 but of greater resistance, for example made of treated steel. These two washers 11 and 12 are carried by a plastic cylinder 13 mounted floating between two identical coil springs 14 and 15. The washers 11 and 12 are in fact clamped between a flange 16 of the cylinder 13 and a sleeve 17a forced around the body of this cylinder 13.
The spring 14 bears against the bottom 17 of the housing 1, while the spring 15 bears against an internal partition 18 of this housing 1, the partition 18 pierced with an opening 19.
Maintaining the circuit breaker in the engaged position, that is to say in the closed position of the circuit, is effected by means of two pawls 20 mounted symmetrically in the housing 1 on two axes 21. Tweezer type springs 22, carried by a boss 23, act on the end of the pawls 20 and tend to bring them closer to one another. The nose 24 of each pawl is therefore intended to retain the bridging element 11 by acting on the high resistance washer 12.
The circuit breaker is engaged manually by means of a rod 25 disposed axially in the body 1, this rod being provided with a stop 26. A coil spring 27 is arranged between this stop 26 and the bottom 28 of a housing 29 presented by the cylindfil son 31 of the piano wire type sliding in a sheath 32. This wire 31 ends in a pull tab placed within reach of the driver's hand on the dashboard or close to that -this. The end of this steel wire 31 is securely attached to the rod 25 by means of a threaded tubular connector 33 screwed into the threaded end of the rod 25.
The sheath 32 is guided relative to the body 1, by a cap 34 attached to an end piece 35 of the body 1.
Rings 36 and 37 secure, on the one hand, the cap 34 on the end piece 35 and, on the other hand, the sheath 32 in the end of said cap 34.
Around the rod 25 is arranged a tubular member 38 capable of sliding axially in the body 1.
At its left end, this tubular member 38 carries a collar 39 forming a stop. At its right end, this tubular member 38 carries a folded tab 40. The rod 25 carries in the vicinity of this lug 40 a radial pin 41. Depending on the angular orientation given to the pin 41 relative to the lug 40, it is possible to make the rod 25 axially integral with one another and the tubular member 38. The angular displacement of the rod 25 is of course made from the pull tab attached to the end of the steel wire 31, which pull can be moved by a quarter of a turn for example . As for the tab 49, its angular position is ensured by means of a fixed blade integral with the housing 1, respectively with the cap 34.
The unlocking of the pawls 20 can therefore be done manually from the pull tab controlling the steel wire 31, respectively the rod 25 and the tubular member 38. In fact, levers 42 are mounted to oscillate on pins 43 carried by the housing 1. Each of these levers 42 has the general shape of a T and comprises an arm 44 located in the path of the collar 39 forming a stop. The other arm 45 of this lever 42 cooperates with the corresponding pawl 20, so that any angular displacement of a lever 42 in one direction or the other around the axis 43, a separation of the pawl occurs. 20 corresponding causing the spout 24 to escape outside the washer 12, which releases the bridging member and allows the cylinder 13 to be returned to the neutral position by the spring 15, resulting in a break in the electrical circuit between the terminals 6 and 7.
So that such a circuit breaker can be actuated during an impact occurring for example following a collision, the latter is provided inside its housing 1 with an inertia mass 46 formed for example of a block of high density alloy, such as lead-zinc.
This mass 46 is pierced in its center to allow passage of the rod 25 and the tubular member 38. It has at its peripheral part a collar 47 on either side of which two springs 48 and 49 are supported. The spring 48 bears against an internal flange 50 provided in the housing 1, while the spring 49 bears against the bottom 51 of this housing 1.
It will be understood without further from the view of the drawing that in the event that the body 1 is subjected to an impact occurring in the direction of the arrow 52, the inertia mass 46 of levers 44 which are in its path. Under this effect, the levers 42 would oscillate causing a separation of the two pawls 20 releasing the bridging member 1 1 and causing the rupture of the electrical circuit passing through terminals 6 and 7.
This circuit breaker shown in fig. 1 to 4 must therefore, to be effective in the event of a frontal collision in particular, be arranged along the general axis of movement of the vehicle, the bottom 17 of the circuit breaker being directed towards the front of the vehicle. It is also possible that in the event of a collision from the rear of the vehicle, the rebound occurring between the inertia mass 46 and the bottom 51, also causes a sufficient displacement of this mass 46 in the direction of the lever arms 44 for release the pawls 20.
Preferably, this circuit breaker is mounted on the vehicle by means of a console 53 provided with openings in an arc of a circle for the passage of fixing screws. These openings 54 in an arc of a circle are intended to allow easy orientation of the circuit breaker in the direction a more favorable with respect to the vehicle. It should be noted that in this embodiment, one of the fixing screws 55 of the body 1 of the circuit breaker to the console 53 consists of the terminal 6 itself on which nuts 56 and locknuts 57 are engaged. .
The operation of this circuit breaker is therefore as follows:
When the engine of the vehicle must be started, the user first of all begins to exert a traction on the pull tab controlling the steel wire 31 so as to cause a displacement in the direction of the arrow 52 of the cylinder 13 causing the application of the bridging element 11 on the contact blades 8 of the terminals 6 and 7. The jaws 24 of the pawls 20 then ensure that the circuit breaker is held in the engaged position.
In the event of this impact against the front of the vehicle, the inertia mass 46 is projected against the lever arms 44 and causes the unlocking of the pawls 20 and the breaking of the electrical circuit by moving the bridging element 11 away from the blades. contact 8. A deliberate rupture of this electrical circuit can, as already mentioned above, be obtained by angular displacement of the pull tab so as to make the tubular member 38 integral with the rod 25, which makes it possible to act on them. lever arms 44 by pulling on the pull tab and via the stop 39.
The second embodiment of the circuit breaker shown in FIGS. 5 to 1 1 comprises the same main elements already described in connection with the first embodiment. These main elements therefore bear the same reference signs in this second embodiment. These are the housing 1, the pawls 20, the bridging element 11 carried by the cylinder 13 mounted floating between two springs 14 and 15, and the levers 42 whose arms 44 are in the path of an organ. axially movable. This circuit breaker also comprises a rod 25 allowing the contactor to be engaged by pulling on a pull tab acting on a steel wire 31 fixed to the end 30 of the rod 25 by a threaded connection 33.
In this second embodiment, the housing 58 provided in the body 1 is intended to receive an electromagnet 59 acting on a mobile core 60. This mobile core 60 has a shape similar to that of the mobile tubular member 38. according to the first embodiment. Indeed, this core 60 is also provided with a flange 61 forming a stop, on the path of which the lever arms 44 are placed. A spring 62 is placed between this flange 61 and the right end of the cylinder 13. In the circuit 63 of excitation of the electromagnet 59 is arranged a contact switch 64 shown in more detail in FIGS. 9 and 10. This contact switch 64 comprises a body 65 formed of two shells 66 and 67 of plastic material held pressed against each other by metal clips 68.
Inside this body 65 is suspended, between two conical spiral springs 69, an inertia mass 70. This inertia mass 70 constitutes an isolated pole of the contact switch 64. In fact, this mass 70 is connected to one of the wires of the circuit 6 by a terminal 71. In the housing 65 are arranged electrically conductive walls 72 in frustoconical shape, surrounding with play the circular peripheral edge 73 of the mass 70. These conductive walls 72 are , preferably formed of brass and are connected to circuit 63 by a terminal 74.
It will be understood without further from the view of this FIG. 9, that in the event that this switch 64 would be subjected to a shock in any direction, its inertia mass 70 would move in the opposite direction to this shock against one of the conductive walls 72, causing the electrical contact to close momentarily . This momentary closure would therefore cause a short-term excitation of the electromagnet 59 and, therefore, a displacement of the core 60 in the direction of the lever arms 44. The thrust of the collar 61 against these lever arms 44 would therefore cause the unlocking of the pawls 20 releasing the cylinder 13, which would cause a break in the electrical circuit between the terminals 6 and 7 of the circuit breaker.
Fig. 11 shows a circuit diagram of such a circuit breaker which should preferably be fixed at the smallest possible distance from the accumulator battery 75 supplying the vehicle. We see in this diagram the position of the pull tab 76 for manual control of the circuit breaker via the wire 31 under sheath 32, The input terminal 77 of the coil of the electromagnet 59 is connected to the circuit 63 in which is interposed the contact switch 64. This circuit 63 is intended to be normally supplied with current from the ignition key 78 of the vehicle or from the supply of the ignition coil. A switch 79 for use at a fixed station can also be provided in circuit 63, this switch 79 making it possible to send the current directly to the terminal 77 for the current supply of the electromagnet 59.
Of course, the diagram shown being assumed to be applied to a road vehicle, the return circuit of the various devices is not represented, given that this return circuit is made by grounding the vehicle. The operation of this second embodiment is, in broad outline, similar to that of the first embodiment.
The circuit breaker is engaged by exerting a traction on the pull tab 76 acting on the rod 25 via the steel wire 31. After displacement of the cylinder 13 to the right and locking by the pawls 20, the the vehicle's general supply circuit is switched on.
In the event of an impact occurring in any direction on the vehicle, the contact switch 64 made integral with said vehicle by a fixing screw 80 undergoes the same impact, which causes movement in the opposite direction of the inertia mass 70 causing momentary contact and temporary excitation of the electromagnet 59. During this excitation of the electromagnet 59, the core 60 is driven towards the cylinder 13, which causes the tilting of the lever arms 44 and the 'separation of the pawls 20 against the action of the springs 22, therefore a break in the circuit between the terminals 6 and 7 by moving the bridging element 11 away from the contact blades 8.
The opening of the circuit between the contact terminals 6 and 7 can, of course, also be positively controlled after the circuit breaker has been engaged with the aid of the pull tab 76 by engaging the switch 79 which would also cause an excitation of the electromagnet 59 and, thus, the unlocking of the pawls 20.
Alternatively, the contact switch 64, instead of forming a separate part of the body 1 of the circuit breaker, could be incorporated therein.
Many construction variants could, of course, be imagined, in particular as regards the number of locking pawls 20 and the particular shape of these, as well as of the levers 42. Likewise, the body 1 instead of being made of material insulating plastic could be metal. However in this case, each contact terminal should, of course, be isolated from this metal body.
