On a donc: cp = 0, Cos cp = 1 , V/U = 1 .
W = U cos (P (1) (cp étant l'angle de l'arbre63 et de l'arbre60) * L'arbre63 entraffie alors l'arbre récepteur61 grâceà l'action des pendules centrifuges78 sur les aubes79 et l'on a encore: V = W cos (P (2) (V étant, comme précédemment, la vitesse angulaire de l'arbre récepteur).
Transmission device capable of acting as a torque converter The present invention relates to a transmission device capable of the most varied applications (stationary machines, vehicles, aircraft) capable in particular of functioning as a progressive or continuous torque converter, as a torque converter. automatic, or even as a convertor dependent to both a driver and an automatic control.
This device comprises a motor shaft, a variable coupling whose driving member is surrounded by this shaft and whose driven member is orientable so that its axis makes a variable angle çp with l 'geometric axis of the motor shaft, the movement of the driven shaft being transmitted to a fixed orientation receiving shaft and the ratio of the angular speeds of the motor shaft and the driven shaft being determined by the value of the angle cp.
It is characterized by the fact that the connection between the two members of the coupling is made, on the one hand, by a plurality of elements of small dimensions and low masses, forming a network whose outer surface is substantially a portion of a sphere, these elements being subjected to return actions by centrifugal forces or by centrifugal forces and by elastic forces and, on the other hand, by vanes which enter said network and are entrained by it.
The appended drawing represents, by by way of example, various embodiments and variants of the transmission device according to the invention.

Fig. 4 is a partial view of the surface of a network .
Fig. 5 is a partial section, to on an enlarged scale, of a particular form of the network .
Figs. 6 and 7 show particular shapes of blades.
Fig. 8 is an explanatory diagram.
Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section of an automatic control device.
Fig. 10 shows another form of network . Figs. 11 and 12 are partial cuts relating to a network made up of push buttons.
Fig. 13 shows a particular form of elements P of the network, which here are small centrifugal pendulums.
Figs. 14 and 15 show a second embodiment of the device constituting a torque converter in which the motor and receiver shafts are in extension and which do not include gears.
Fig. 16 shows, in detail, a side part of the network used in this converter. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 and 2, the device is supported by a fixed housing 1, a motor shaft 2 passes through bearings 3 carried by the fixed housing < B> 1.
A pinion 4 (fig. 1) secured to the shaft 2 meshes with a pinion 5 secured to the shaft 6 < / B> of the driving member 9 of a variable coupling. This shaft turns in bearings 7.
These bearings 7 are carried by a barrel 8 connected to the housing 1 by arms 8a and 8b (fig. 1 and 2). The leading member 9 is made up of a plurality of small centrifugal pendulums 10, arranged in a quin conce (fig. 4) and which touch each other.
The 10 clocks are shown in detail in fig. 5. Each pendulum comprises (fig. 5) a foot 11 in the shape of a sphere, a body 10, a head 12, also in the form of a sphere.
The feet 11 are engaged in grooves 13 formed in a rim 14 (fig. 1, 2, 3, 5) < / B> and located in planes perpendicular to the geometric axis of the shaft 6. Each groove 13 </ B > is of such shape as to allow the pendulums of which it receives the foot, to incline freely in the plane of this groove and also to incline from a certain angle to right and to left with respect to to this groove.
The depth of the grooves is such that the pendulums can sink in a certain amount. 10 pendulums are subjected to the centrifugal force developed by the rotation of the shaft 6, which constitutes a restoring force, the force which recalls, to the furthest position from the tree 6.
Their heads 12 touch each other step by step (fig. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and are outwardly tangent to a (fictitious) sphere with center 0 (fig. 1 and 2) located on the geometric axis of the tree 6. < / B> (Point 0 thus constitutes the center of the device).
On the sides of the network formed by the 10 centrifugal pendulums there are lateral bands 15 (fig. 5) substantially perpendicular to < / B> the geometric axis of the shaft 6 and which exert lateral pressures on the spheres 12 which touch them and, through them and, of step by step, over the entire network. (These bands can be elastic).
The variable coupling driven member consists of 16 vanes carried by a cap 17 which is integral with a driven shaft 18, whose geometric axis can change orientation, as we will see, but which always passes through the point 0, center of the device < B>.
The shaft 18 is carried by bearings 19 (fig. 1 and 2) themselves mounted on a bracket 20 (fig. 2 ). This caliper is centered on the bearings 21 and 22 carried by the fixed housing 1 (fig. 2). These bearings have a common geometric axis which also passes through the center 0, center of the device (fig. 2).
For the particular position shown in fig. 1 and 2, the geometric axes of the shafts 6 and 18 collide: but the stirrup 20 can rotate around the geometric axis bearings 21 and 22 at any angle whatsoever, which will be called cp. To achieve this rotation cp, it suffices to act on a crankpin 23 (fig. 2), which is keyed on a journal 24 integral with the caliper 20.
The angle cp which the axis of the shaft 18 makes with the axis of the shaft 6. </ B is thus varied at will. > For the position shown in fig. 1 and 2, this angle y is zero).
The cap 17 carries a toothed wheel 25 (fig. 1 and 2) which meshes with an integral wheel 26 of the receiver shaft 27, which passes through the bearings 28 carried by the fixed housing 1 (fig. 2). The geometric axis of the receiving shaft 27 coincides with the geometric axis of the bearings 21 and 22 (fig. 2).
Figs. 6 and 7 show, by by way of example, blade shapes 16, shapes which have for aim of facilitating the penetration without impact of the blades 16 into the network formed by the heads 12 of the three-way pendulums.
The operation is as follows: The motor shaft 2 (fig. 1) tightens, thanks to the pinions 4 and 5, the shaft 6. </ B > Under the action of centrifugal forces, the 10 centrifugal pendulums stand perpendicularly to the axis of this shaft 6 and form a spherical network center 0 (fig. 1 and 2).
For a sufficient angular speed U of the shaft 6, the network of centrifugal pendulums exerts on the blades 16 of the shaft, driven < B> 18 sufficient efforts to store this tree in good conditions.
In the case of fig. 1 and 2, the tree 18 is an extension of the tree 6.
So we have: cp = 0, Cos cp = 1, V / U = 1. The 18 shaft then takes an angular speed equal or substantially equal to that of the 6 shaft.
It transmits its movement to the receiver shaft 27 through the toothed wheels 25 and 26 (fig. 2).
If now the driver wants to turn the receiver shaft 27 less quickly than, previously for the same shaft speed 6 (and, consequently, for the same speed of the motor shaft 2), it acts on the crankpin 23 (fig. 2) and, thanks to it, it turns through a certain angle (p the caliper 20 around the geometric axis of the bearings 21-22, axis which passes through the center 0 of the device.
The relation between the angular speed U of the shaft 6, carrying the network and the angular speed V of the shaft 18 which carries the vanes 16 is substantially V = U cos q), as we will see.
Fig. 8 is, to this subject, an explanatory diagram.
0 S is the projection of the axis of the shaft 6 on the plane of fig. 1.
0 T is the projection, on the plane of fig. 1, of the axis of the shaft 18.
These axes are concurrent at the point 0, center of the device, and form between them an angle (p.
We have shown in 16 the projection, on the plane of the axes OS and OT, of the dawn which is at a given instant, in the plane determined by the axis of the shaft 18 and the geometric axis, of the bearings 21 and 22. (This blade is parallel to the axis of the 'tree 18).
Ml is the point of the network which is located, at this given ins, on the geometric axis of the bearings 21-22 and in contact with the blade 16.
In fig. 8, this point M1 projects into 0.
Fig. 8 represents schematically between lines aa and bb the development of the spherical surface of the lattice in the vicinity of point MI, and also represents schematically < B> the development of the surface which carries the blades.
These blades are represented, at the instant considered, at points M1, M2, M3, M4, Mâ, etc.
If we consider the linear speed of the network element which is in M1 at the moment considered, its linear speed is equal to at RX U , R being the radius 0 Ml.
This linear speed R X U is shown in fig. 8 by the vector MÎ P , with MÎ P = RX U - The vector M1 P decomposes into two vectors M1 Q and QP.
The vector Ml Q is perpendicular to vane 16 and, therefore, perpendicular to the axis < B> 0 T of the blade 18 carrying the blades, because the planes of the to bes 16 are here parallel to this axis 0 T.
The vector Q P is parallel to dawn 16, and 17on a, vector -. Mi-p = Mi Q + On the other hand, cp being, as before, the year gle of axis OT of shaft 18 with]! axis OS of shaft 6, < / B> we have : 91-Q = Ml P ces (p .
However, the vector M1 Q represents the linear drive speed due to the rotation of the shaft 18 of axis 0 T (i.e. the linear speed of the point of vane 16 which coincides at this instant with the considered of network element).
This linear speed is equal to to R X V, V being the angular speed of the shaft 18.
We therefore have: RV = RUcoscp, V = U cos cp, and V / U = cos q).
This reasoning obviously only applies to dawn which, at the instant considered, is at the point mi.
If we consider, at the same time, points M2, M3, M4, M5, etc. the calculation proves that the law is the same as for point Ml, to namely: V = U cos cp.
If we now consider the heads of pendulums or, more generally (in the case where the West network is not formed by pendulums), if we consider the elements of the - network which are not on the middle line (C) (fig. 8) but which are not far from it - the law is appreciably still : </ B> V = U cos (p, as shown in the calculation.
Ultimately, the ratio V / U = cos (p varies continuously with the angle cp.
It therefore suffices to gradually vary the year gle çp to gradually vary the V / U ratio. The device therefore constitutes a progressive or continuous torque converter.
In the case of fig. 1 and 2, the angle cp can vary significantly from 0 to 3t / 2.
In other cases, we could vary it by more than n / 2, and thus obtain a change of gear (or reverse ). < / B>
During operation, if the angle cp is not equal to n / 2, the vanes are driven by the network (vector M1 0 of in fig, 8).
But at the same time there is there a relative movement of the blades to through the network (vector Q P of fig. 8), when the angle cp is not zero.
This relative movement of the blades in the network must be done as smoothly as possible.
The vanes; have, for this purpose, an appropriate shape, so that the network elements are absorbed substantially without shocks to leave not, ser the blades, These network elements are attacked by the edge of the blades.
Figs. 6 and 7 represent, to as an example and to enlarged scale, blade shapes which include are rounded off designed to avoid shocks when the blades come into contact with the network elements.
In fig. 6, the vane has a straight chord with rounded to right, and to left.
In fig. 7, the dawn has a greater number of roundings.
To reduce friction, it is generally advantageous to to centrifuge the oil which constantly bathes the blades 16, possibly under pressure .
The angle control device cp (crankpin 23 in fig. 2) may be under the control of the driver or of an automatic control device.
It may be under the control of an automatic system, with a view to achieving such determined condition (for example, the approximate constancy of the engine speed under conditions determined).
It can be to both at the discretion of the driver (with or without servo-control) and under the control of an automatic system.
Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section of a system relating to this case. A housing 29 carries, in bearings 30, a shaft 31 secured to a bell 32.
A cage 33 which can slide on the shaft 31 rotates with this shaft and drives balls 34 which, centrifuged, rest on the bell 32 </ B > and pushes a stop 35 in antagonism with a calibrated spring 3 6.
The shaft 31 is driven by one of the shafts of the positive device, for example by the motor shaft.
The stop 35 acts on the rod 37 which is articulated in 38 on a bar 39 of rudder. On this lifter is articulated at 40 a bar 41 subjected to the action of the driver. At 42, a bar 43 is articulated which, through the intermediary of a wheelhouse, controls the crankpin 23 of FIG. 2, and by it controls the variations of the angle cp, and consequently the variations of the ratio of angular velocities (gradually, moreover).
In various applications (especially in the case of vehicles), it is possible to realize an automatic mechanism involving the following factors .
1) The resistive torque (by reaction of the toothing of the wheel 26 on the teeth of the wheel 25 in fig. 2).
2) The speed of the motor shaft, actuating a regulator similar to to that of fig. 9, or any other type.
3) A calibrated spring, the spring of which 36 of fig. 9 gives a non-limiting example.
It is possible to use a mechanism including that of FIG. 9 gives a non-limiting example, with or without the action of the driver.
Arrangements of this kind will often be of interest for the automatic control of vehicles.
On the other hand, and in general, it should be noted the interest that there often has in using a spring (the spring 3 6 of fig. 9 or any other elastic system) to automatically return the device to neutral, fulfilling the condition: cp = W2 , < / B> cos y = 0 (which gives the neutral point), when the speed of the tree 6 falls below a certain value.
In other embodiments of the device, the network can be constituted by elements of the most varied forms, with or without pendulums.
Fig. 10 shows a form using centrifugal pendulums in which each pendulum is in the form of a ring 44 carrying a spherical head 45. The rings are retained by wires 46 of appropriate section (circular or ovolid or other ) carried by the rim 14 integral with the shaft 6 (fig. 1 and 2).
Fig. 11 and fig. 12 (which is a section CC of fig. 11) relate to the case where elements of the network, instead of being pendulums, are pous evenings 47 bearing spherical heads 48. These pous evenings are guided by the rim 49. They are recalled by springs 50 resting themselves on a rim 51. They are retained by 52 rods which pass through 53 cells formed in the rods of the pushers.
In this variant, the centrifugal force, developed by the rotation of the shaft 6 cooperates - more or less according to the application cases - </ B > with 50. spells
Fig. 13 shows a particular form of centrifugal pendulum capable of playing the role of a element of a network. The head of this pendulum comprises a cylindrical part 54 terminated by a hemisphere 55, the foot is constituted by a sphere 56. In the second form execution shown (fig. 14 and 15), the motor and receiver shafts are in extension and there is no gear.
In this embodiment, a housing 57 carries bearings 58 and 59 for a motor shaft 60 and the receiving shaft 61 located in continuation of one another.
The 60 motor shaft carries the driving member of a variable coupling. This organ is formed by an array of 62 centrifugal pendulums similar to the array of 10 pendulums of the first embodiment.
The driven member of this coupling is wedged on a shaft 63. This member is formed by blades 64 similar to the blades 16 of the preceding figures, fixed on a rotating casing < B> 65. These blades enter the network of centrifugal pendulums 62. The shaft 63 is carried by bearings 66 themselves housed in a 67. canon
The barrel 67 itself is supported by a caliper 68. The caliper 68 is provided with pivots 69 and 70 and, thanks to these pivots, can rotate at a certain angle with respect to the housing 57.
In the position shown in fig. 14, the motor shaft 60, the shaft 63 and the receiving shaft 61 have their geometrical axes in extension.
Relative to this position, the stirrup 68 can pivot around its 69 and 70 pivots of an angle which, as before, will be called q).
The network formed by the 62 centrifugal clocks differs from the network formed by the trifugal 10 clocks of fia. 1 to 5 </ B> by specific features which will now be described.
The edge 7la of the network is carried by a flange that 72 integral with a sleeve 73 which can slightly slide parallel to the shaft < B> 60. On the contrary, the edge 74a of the network is fixed. A spring 75a is supported on a base 76 rigidly connected to the motor shaft 60.
Under these conditions, a certain elastic pressure is exerted laterally on the network of centrifugal pendulums.
The shaft 63 is integral with a cap 77 which carries a second network of centrifugal pendulums 78.
This network is analogous to the other networks already described. The border 71b pushed by the spring 75b resiliently bears on the side of this network under conditions similar to those which have been exposed to the edge 71a, pushed by the spring 75a. In this network penetrate blades 79.
The blades 79 which are carried by a rotating casing 80 which is itself integral with the receiver shaft 61, </ B > are analogous to the blades already described (16 and 64). However, they have a particularity: these blades are movable relative to the casing 80. They can be slightly raised by a device which makes it possible to modify the depth of their penetration into the pendulum network 78 .
This device consists of the following: each blade 79 is mounted to pivot on an axis 81 carried by the rim 82 of the rotating housing 80. In addition, each blade 79 is terminated by a tail 83. This tail presses, under the action of centrifugal forces , on a rim 84 whose section is beveled and which is connected to a hub 85 by arms 86. The hub < B> 85, thanks to to a key 87, turns integrally with the shaft 61, but can slide in parallel at this tree 61.
This sliding can be controlled by a stop 88 and a fork 89 of axis 90, acting in opposition to a spring. This fork itself can be controlled by a 91 rod articulated in 92.
Thanks to this mechanism, it is possible to raise the vanes (even during operation of the transmission) by acting on the rod 91 of the furnace 89.
By pulling the rod 91 towards the right of the figure, the vanes , 79 automatically raise under the action of centrifugal force. The depth of their penetration into the 78 centrifugal pendulum network can be adjusted by adjusting the position of the 89. oven.
Fig. 16 shows a detail of the border 71a. (The borders 71b, 74a, 74b are analogous). Each of them has rounded millings 93a in which the heads of the centrifugal pendulums 62. are housed. The radius of each round 93a is slightly greater than the radius of the pendulum heads.
In fig. 15, the shaft 63 is not in the extension of the motor shaft 60 and the receiver shaft 61. It makes with these trees the angle which was called cp previously.
The operation takes place as follows: The driving of the shaft 63 by the motor shaft 60 is carried out as explained for the devices of fig. 1 and 2, thanks to the action of the centri fuge pendulums 62 on the blades 64.
If W is the angular speed of the shaft 63, and U, as before, the angular speed of the motor shaft 60, on so.
W = U cos (P (1) (cp being the angle of shaft 63 and shaft 60 ) * The 63 shaft then clutches the receiving shaft 61 thanks to the action of the centrifugal pendulums 78 on the blades 79 and we still have: V = W cos (P (2) (V being, like previously, the angular speed of the receiving shaft).
From equations (1) and (2), we deduce: V = U COS2 cp or V / U = </ B > COS2 (P.
So if we gradually vary the angle cp, we still have a transmission with gradual gear ratio.
The advantage of the embodiment of the device of FIGS. 14 and 15 is that the receiving shaft is an extension of the motor shaft and that no gearing is used.
It will be noted that for cp = 0, cos cp one carries out a direct take with blocking in block of the whole system.
